In this episode, Andrew shares how journaling can help us hear God's voice. While many people have a love/hate relationship with journaling - there is a very helpful method of journaling called the "Immanuel Journaling" approach. Today's podcast is a 20 minute version of a sermon that was shared on Pentecost Sunday in our outdoor service. This devotional is more like an adventure through different passages of Scripture about Simon Peter, who is transformed by the Holy Spirit. It ties to the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. We can relate to the shame, guilt and feelings of being disqualified that Peter walks through in Jesus' last days. The way that that the Holy Spirit changes Peter forever gives us a sense of what we can expect as we kneel to Jesus as our King, and the Holy Spirit comes and lives inside us. It is the power of the Holy Spirit and posture of forgiveness in Jesus that are game changers for us who follow Jesus. In this episode Andrew tells the story of hearing God's voice audibly (only once ever), and then gives us a list of characteristics of what God's voice always, sometimes and never sounds like. That list is below here in the show notes: The voice of Jesus sounds like:  ALWAYS: ·      Peaceful and confident ·      Often it feels like the voice comes from “behind me”   Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)  21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”   ·      It “sounds” slightly different from your own thoughts ·      In your own language (unless God is reminding you of a verse in the King James Version Bible, He doesn’t speak in King James’ English) ·      The fruit (result) of obeying the rhema word from God will lead you to love others more and be more generous, forgiving and kind   SOMETIMES: ·      SOMETIMES is a verse, or a phrase from a Bible verse ·      SOMETIMES it’s a warning ·      SOMETIMES it’s a directive to do something or give to someone ·      SOMETIMES God simply brings someone to mind to prompt you to seek them out and check in, to pray for them, and be aware of their needs and situation ·      SOMETIMES it’s a prompting to forgive someone who has hurt you ·      SOMETIMES a word or a phrase is accompanied by a mental picture that God projects on the screen of your mind (sometimes a short movie other times just a still picture that flashes briefly) ·      SOMETIMES it comes to me as a question, that gets me thinking differently ·      SOMETIMES it is a word of wisdom from God (1 Cor. 12:8) ·      SOMETIMES it is a word of knowledge (1 Cor. 12:8) – which is God revealing to you what you could not know on your own.  It is sometimes used by God to show others that He sees them and their situation and loves them.  It is often followed up with a prophetic word (which is for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort, 1 Cor. 14:3) ·      SOMETIMES it is a prophetic word for myself or others.  These words always build into your identity, calling and destiny.  They will give you hope and give you something to hold onto when things get difficult.   NEVER ·      NEVER condemning ·      NEVER goes against His written Word ·      NEVER selfish or self serving

In this podcast Andrew looks at the role of the shepherd with sheep in the Bible. In John 10, Jesus goes into great detail about how we (his sheep) hear and recognize his voice. This podcast refers to Genesis 48, Revelation 7:17, Psalm 23:1, Isaiah 53:6, Ezekiel 34, James 4:7, John 8:47, Luke 15:4-7, Romans 2:4, Psalm 46:10, Matthew 12:19. Three ways that I have learned to recognize HIS voice: 1)  Read His Word:  While God doesn’t use King James English with me, the Holy Spirit will often whisper a phrase from His written Word to me.   2)  Acting on impressions I get from God, then testing the fruit:  If I get a picture in my mind, have a dream about someone, or have someone “randomly” come to mind – I pray, send them a prayer via text message, call them, and check in.  If the timing is clearly miraculous, then I know that was God nudging me – and I pay attention to what that was like to “hear” or “sense” God’s prompting.    3)  I take prophetic words that are given to me seriously:  I take time to pray about and test any word from God that someone gives to me, often making sure it is written form.  As I see some words radically on target, I pay attention to the heart posture and “feeling” of the word.  It tunes my ear to hear the kind, loving, leading, guiding tone of Jesus toward me.  Words from God are NEVER condemning, but may be convicting (there’s a BIG difference).

This is the first episode in a series about hearing God's voice. In this quick look at 1 Kings 19, we learn from Elijah the prophet who had an encounter hearing God's voice. After his greatest victory over the prophets of Baal, (showing that Yahweh is the God over all other gods) - Elijah is depressed, running for his life. It is in this low place that God ministers to Elijah through the actions of the angel of the Lord, then God, Himself reveals himself to Elijah and gives him the tangible direction he was seeking from God.

In this podcast, Andrew talks about the "Shalom" peace of God and how two ways that we can carry it more. While the two pathways to peace mentioned in Philippians 4 are 1) prayer 2) thanksgiving Here are 8 statements that are shared that help our understanding of God's nature remain true: If we believe that God can do all things, then we will ask Him to provide.  If we believe that God wants to help and loves us, then we will seek his solutions. If we believe that God still does miracles, then we will have faith to pray for them. If we believe that God will work all things out for our good, then even in trials we will look for his breakthrough If we believe that God hears us when we pray, then we will seek him in prayer. If we believe that Jesus will never leave us, then we know that we will never be alone. If we believe that the Holy Spirit is living inside us, then we will know that we have all the power we need to stand in the midst of difficulty.  If we believe that God is King of the Universe, then we will see every challenge as an opportunity for the Prince of Peace to come and have his way in this word. 

I've been telling the story behind the song for the last 12 weeks of the podcast, this is a bonus addition to what can be heard on my "proof in the mirror" CD. In the fall of 2012, we laid to rest the body of a six week old baby named Lydia Rose Green. As I prepared to do her memorial service, this was the song that the Lord gave me. This is the last podcast in this series called, "the story behind the song." I believe all songs are written in heaven and are shared with those of us who listen to receive them as gifts. The song, Welcome Home is the last track on the 2009 CD named, "Proof in the Mirror." The lyrics of this song were the answer to a question I asked Jesus, "What do you say to us when we walk into heaven?" On a difficult day filled with "why" questions, the words of this song brought incredible peace to my heart. The song went unshared for almost five years, until I recorded it for the world to hear it. It has been a gift to others who are grieving the loss of a loved one. There was a phrase tumbling over and over inside my head in December of 2004 that led me to write this song.  It was "you will always be, a breath away from me"  That truth struck such a chord with me that it sent me writing the lyrics to this song.  In a time of praying and wanting a third child, I was thinking a lot about how God breathes life into us - both in the womb (Psalm 139 says we were knit together by God), and when we take our first breath at birth.   After 18 years, this song is still powerful to me as a reminder of my identity and that I am created in the image God.  If you are lonely, desperate, depressed or questioning whether God loves you - listening to God sing these words over you will shift your mindset and soften your heart.   As soon as I wrote this song, I realized that it had tons of value for the pro-life movement.  With the help of some friends, Steve Chollet produced a music video for this song back in 2005.  My son Michael and I have a quick cameo near the end - but the video really tells the story of how children are a blessing and shows a young woman who realizes she's pregnant and her decision making process. The Bible is a love letter that God has left for us.  A love letter is supposed to help our love from growing cold when we are apart.  In May of 2003, I wrote this song as an encouragement to read the Bible as a way for God to remind us of His love.  I am passionate about helping others learn to study and be saturated in God's Word.   Psalm 139:16 -  "All the days ordained for me were written in your book, before one of them came to be"  While God's written words are like a love letter written to us - the way we live is writing a letter back to Jesus, and He reads every word.  He is always with us and is watching.  This is both encouraging and sobering.   This song also talks about the love songs that Jesus sings over us every night (Zephaniah 3).   Love Letter Verse 1:  I have left a love letter for you Have you read the words? One of my forefathers is William Marshal, who served five Kings in England in medieval times.  I have visited churches, abbeys and other buildings he built to build the Kingdom of God in his day.  When he died and was buried in the Temple Church near the Tower of London, the Archbishop of Canterbury declared William to be "the flower of chivalry" and dubbed him "the greatest knight that ever lived."   There is a canvas picture of one of his castles hanging on the wall in my office.  The integrity that William maintained helped him protect the people from the king, and he was sworn to protect the king from the people.  William was the force behind Magna Carta and served as mentor to Henry III (aged 9) while he ruled the realm as the regent.  His fathering, diplomacy, integrity and grit helped England maintain it's sovereignty while France was seeking to invade and conquer the land.   It is this heritage that fuels my boyish love of swords, castles, knights and monks living long ago.  This proud royal heritage descended from 29 generations of Celtic kings in our lineage supplied my imagination with the metaphor that fueled the song, Place at the Table.  With the knights of the round table in mind, and the need for men in our day to step into courage and take their place at the table, this song was born.   This podcast describes the inspiration and meaning behind this song.  This song is what I imagine Jesus singing to a man's heart.  Just as the song, "Captivating" is what Jesus sings to a woman's heart - this is a call to see ourselves as men invited to the table by Jesus.   Place at the Table Verse 1: Many years ago, in a far away land, the King chose the strongest to sit at his right hand Many men tried to win that prize They were hungry and thirsty, you could see it in their eyes Coming ‘round the table, they understood the cost, There were battles left to fight, to save those who were lost The fighting is for honor, for love and for the truth All of heaven’s waiting to see what you will do Chorus: We’ve been watching you waiting to see you take your place At the table of truth, that was set just for you We need your heart; will you play your part? I wrote this song called Brushstrokes for Michael & Amy Wadlow's wedding in March of 2002.  This song points to the fact that the basis of marriage is rooted in the command of Jesus for us to love one another.  Each moment of our sacrifice in loving one another paints another brushstroke in the portrait of Jesus our relationship is showing the world.   This song is written and sung by my wife, Linda and I.   Performed from Jesus' point of view - you can imagine it is the song that Jesus sings when He appears at the wedding.   “Brush Strokes” Verse 1: I have come, to bless you on this wedding day I am here, to fill you with my love You have waited for this day for all of your lives I am pleased to receive your sacrifice of praise I have laid my life down, to show you my great love Will you follow me and do the same? Jesus came to give us life to the fullest (John 10:10), and part of stepping into that life is actively embracing curiosity. At the Thanksgiving table my answer to what I'm thankful for made everyone present scowl in a "double take"  In this episode, Andrew unpacks these three verses written by the Apostle Paul:  1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NIV) 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. We explore what it means to step into joy by praying continually and giving thanks in all circumstances.  In order to do this, we must also keep a long view of time and a high view of sovereignty.  This podcast really challenges us to embrace suffering as a part of our Christian journey.   Other scriptures used:  In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV) the Apostle Paul quotes Jesus… 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. Wanna get away?  Um.  Yes!!!!  We all are faced with times where we are overwhelmed, pressured, stressed and not sure we will make it through the day.   What do you do when you feel like that?  We are all tempted to run and hide when we have really difficult days, but where we run to is key... Most of us are tempted to run away - to start driving and never come back, but God is inviting us to run to Him and be honest with our feelings.  This kind of lament is always more fruitful when others enter into it with us.  When we are vulnerable and share our pain with others, they help to carry our burdens to Jesus in prayer and lighten our load.   David gives us a template for how we can lament over the painful moments we experience, bringing our pain and struggle to God.  The choice to enter into thanksgiving and trust will bring a fresh hope.   The Psalm 13 response. 1) Meet with a friend you trust 2) Spill your guts on what’s bothering you 3) Pray together – honestly telling God how you are feeling, inviting Him into things 4) Allow your friend to speak into the situation about what’s still true about God 5) Pray a prayer of faith -  thanking God for His help even before it’s arrived.

In this "All Saints Day" episode, we explore the similarities between St. Brendan of Clonfert and Bilbo Baggins.   St. Brendan is known to have sailed west discovering the "new world" long before the vikings and Columbus did.  At the end of this episode I mention what proof there is to show that the Celtic monks indeed visited what we know as America.   Bilbo Baggins was created by the mind of J.R.R. When you are a follower of Jesus, a dark celebration like what happens on October 31st presents a quandary of what to do...  In this episode, Andrew tells about his experiences with Halloween through the decades in Chico and offers three suggestions on how we might choose to spend our time and influence on a night marked with drunkenness, darkness and bad behavior.  Some biblical principles that undergird this podcast:   We are called away from loving the world & the things of this world (1 John 2:15) We are called to shine the light of Jesus in dark places (Matt. 5:16) We are to come in the opposite spirit of the world (Rom. 12:21; 2 Tim. 1:7; 1 Jn. 4:4) We are called to love one another, it is what sets Jesus followers apart (Jn. 13:34-35)   

In this week's podcast, I'm telling the true story of an encounter that was a good example of a "supernatural encounter."  It started off as my effort to help a local business deal with an angry female customer, and by the end of my time there - there was a shift in the spiritual atmosphere and change of heart because of the power of the Holy Spirit working through a posture of love.   The key takeaway from this experience was remaining "unoffendable."   

Pontus Pilate asks a question that many of us are asking 2000 years later, "What is truth?"  The quest for truth in our culture seems more difficult with each year that passes.  What can we believe as truth?  The world has been trying to question and undermine any existence of absolute truth that can be knowable.  In this podcast we will see that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are all called "the truth" and those who will lead us to truth that can be knowable and believed!   God the Father - Psalm 31:5 God the Son - John 14:6; 8:31-32 God the Holy Spirit - John 14:17; 16:13 3 Primary Ways we receive truth from God 1) The Written Word - John 17:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17  (Logos) 2) His Spoken Word(s) to our Spirit - John 6:63b (Rhema) 3) Through the Confirmation of several other Jesus Followers - Prov. 11:14 Questions to ponder:  Q1:  Are your wise counselors willing to tell you something you don't want to hear?  Q2: Do your wise advisors hold to Biblical values or do they pick and choose?  Q3: Who will you make an effort today to connect with as a wise counselor in your life?  Isaiah 40:8 

Sometimes when I pray, it seems like I must doing something wrong because things seem like they get worse!  In this episode I share a story about one of the times this happened and the valuable lesson that I learned as I look back.  Could it be that God would sometimes allow a situation worse so that you will seek Him more, trust Him more completely and pray more fervently?  Is it really true that prayer changes the atmosphere and lessens stress, tension, conflict and strife?   Here's a key verse I mention in this podcast:  Romans 8:28 (NIV)  28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Why would we embrace experiencing and expressing pain?  Don't we spend most of our lives running away from it?  What good could come from entering into someone else's pain?  While there are many answers to that question - I will point to the benefit of grief doing a maturing work in me.  The book of Psalms is divided into Psalms of praise and Psalms of lament.  Most Old Testament scholars say that two-thirds of these "songs" are that of lament.  Lament is a form of praise (in the midst of pain) while simultaneously engaging as a prayer to God for help.  It is not complaining or putting God on trial for the pain we are feeling, it is an appeal to God based on confidence in His unchanging character. When we participate in the pain of others in a shared grieving, there is a love and solidarity that is seldom found in this world.  Lament is not our final prayer, but it is a "prayer in the meantime."  Most Psalms of lament end with a promise to praise and thank God, and evidence that there has been new revelation, a rehearsal of God's unchanging character and hope that this pain will not last forever.  Let us learn to lament!  

I don't think Jesus followers in our day and age have learned the power and biblical value of lament.  While others may tell you to "get over it" when you experience loss and pain, I've learned that simply stuffing your hurt down into your insides is dangerous.  Repressed grief is a recipe for a disastrous meltdown.  Lament is a "passionate expression of grief or sorrow."  The Bible helps us see that practicing lament is mingling grief and sorrow with prayer as we bring it into the presence of God.  Lament gives our pain a name and expresses it out loud.  This expression leads us to a place of our hope returning, and it usually contains some remembering and rehearsing where God has come through in the past.  From the biblical examples - we see that lament often ends in new trust in God and renewed strength.  This practice of authentic expression in a corporate manner can shape the culture.  It is my prayer that this short teaching will be used by our God to invite you into a more honest place of grieving your losses, weeping with those who weep.   

Whether it's a piece of art on the wall or staring at the daily artwork in a sunset outdoors, God is always revealing His creative nature.  The Bible tells us that all of creation is worshipping the creator God.  Nature displays the splendor and majesty of the one who created it.  Creation gives proof that God exists, His fingerprints are seen in breathtaking design of our entire world.  The beauty of God's handiwork leads us to worship Him - whether it's in a museum or in the park.  

Most people I know don't want to think about heaven, they are convinced that this world has more to offer than what God has planned.  While we are called to be present, to love others well and serve Jesus in this life - we must consider what we are living for, who we are living for and take on an eternal mindset. C.S. Lewis, one of my heroes, talks about heaven and in this episode we are sharing a bit of his perspective as we consider the topic: heaven.

Have you ever had a response that was over the top to someone else?  Maybe a time where they asked you to do a simple task, but you snapped at them for no reason that was obvious?  That happened to me recently and I learned a valuable lesson about taking time to reflect on why I had the explosion of a response.  For me, fear was hiding underneath my loud, defensive outburst.  Unexamined fears will unwittingly lead you.  Beware.  It's time to switch from defense to offense. It's time to face our fears, sort out the lies and apply truth to them.  When we do that, it's like throwing a bucket of water on a melting wicked witch.  

Do you ever wonder if you are really forgiven?  This podcast takes a look at Psalm 103 and the incredible promises in it that will encourage you and reassure you that when you are forgiven by God - it's a forever thing.  When Jesus died on the cross he cried out "tetelestai" a Greek word that means, "It is Finished."  That word was used in a quite a few contexts in the first century, including on receipts for business deals.  In that context it meant "Paid in Full."  The truth is that our sins were paid in full, and Jesus' work was finished and complete on the cross when He gave His life for us.   Psalm 103 (NIV)

I'm talking about holidays that draw us into beautiful community with others, cause us to be thankful to God for what He has done for us in the past and grow closer to Him.  God gave instructions for His people to observe seven different feasts during each year.  While these were designed for the Jewish people, every one of these holy occasions pointed to the future hope of the messiah Jesus.  As the church, we have been "grafted in" to God's chosen people (we haven't replaced them).  Since Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi, it would make a lot of sense that we would investigate and consider celebrating these holy occasions.  We certainly don't have to do this, but we have the freedom to partake in them.  Here is a list of the events in the Jewish calendar given by God to observe:   Spring:   - Passover - celebrating God's provision of a lamb (Jesus) so we escape death - The Feast of Unleavened Bread - Pointing to a sinless savior, Jesus - The Festival of First Fruits - occurred on the same day Jesus rose from the dead (Paul calls Jesus the first fruits of resurrection)  - The Feast of Weeks - 49 days after Passover, ending with Pentecost (when God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church)  Fall:  - Feast of Trumpets - the Jewish new year, beginning the 10 days of awe, foreshadows Jesus second coming with a trumpet blast - The Day of Atonement - 10 days after the Feast of Trumpets begins, celebrating the forgiveness of sins because of shed blood - The Feast of Tabernacles - looks forward to Jesus' return, where He will "tabernacle" (live) with His people You can hear the sermon about Feasting with God from 4/10/22 (YouTube) You can hear the sermon about feasting with God from 4/10/22 (Podcast) I also preached a sermon about the importance of eating together from Jesus' life... Jesus came to set us free from the kingdom of darkness and invites us into His kingdom of light and life.  If He has set us free, we are really free.  His definition of freedom is a bit different than what I see lived out around me.  Jesus chose freedom with limitations.  Some would say that "freedom knows no limits; if it is limited, it should not be called freedom."  But freedom without limits brings destruction.  We must be careful to not allow our freedom to drive us to a selfish posture of serving ourselves.  As Jesus followers we need to learn boundaries, and limits.    I talked about "the freedom liturgy" in a sermon linked with "the rule of life" Hear the sermon from March, 27, 2020 that includes this material (Youtube) Hear the sermon from March, 27, 2020 that includes this material (Podcast)

Fasting is purposely abstaining from food or other good things so that you can hear the voice of God more clearly.  While fasting has many physical benefits, the practice of fasting in the Christian church is generally to become more sensitive to God and grow in our faith.  The Lenten season prior to Easter every year is known as a period of fasting, and we can learn about our posture in fasting by learning more about the intent of that season.  It is a time of growth, preparation and joy.  Jesus fasted and implied that His followers would do so after He was gone from the earth.  Fasting is a helpful rhythm for us to learn about and practice.   Click to hear the sermon on Fasting from 03/06/22 (YouTube) Click to hear the sermon on Fasting from 03/06/22 (podcast)

Obscurity is being unknown to the world, but seen, known and loved by God.  There is a powerful place for a posture of obscurity in our Christian walk. Jesus modeled a life of obscurity and wasn't driven by maintaining His reputation with others.  He lived to please His Heavenly Father.  The pattern I see in Jesus' life in Matthew 3 and 4 reveals a powerful delivery of His true identity as a loved son, followed by a season of obscurity in the desert where God seared that "belovedness" into Jesus' soul.  Then Jesus is tempted in the area of His identity - passes the tests and emerges to start His ministry.  Obscurity can play the same role in our lives as well.    Click here to hear a sermon about obscurity during our Sunday service on 2/20/22 (YouTube) Click here to hear a sermon about obscurity during our Sunday service on 2/20/22 (Podcast)

God's written word, described with the Greek word, Logos is more than a boring set of rules.  It is a love letter to us that reveals the character and heart of the one who loves us most (God).  It is one of the ways God speaks to us, and every other way He reveals messages to us must be in alignment with what the Bible says.  God is inviting us to read His love letter.  His heart longs for us to know that we are His own. God reveals Himself in many ways - and He loves for us to hear what He is saying through his creation.  Have you spent time outdoors recently for the purpose of hearing God's voice?  Psalm 19 tells us that the creation is constantly declaring His praises.  The cathedral of nature is calling out to us to come and receive perspective, rest and silence.  Solitude in God's creation is what many of us need to slow our hearts down.   I make reference to Haydn's creation, here is a link to hear the first song, "The Heavens are Telling"   I also reference a song that I wrote called: Still Small Voice, here is a link to hear it on YouTube or get it on Apple music Psalm 19 (NIV)

E.E. Cummings said, "Most people are perfectly afraid of silence" and I agree.  As humans we fill the air with constant background noise, often afraid to be alone with our thoughts.  In the absence of reflective time and silence, we miss out on the sweetest, most powerful times with God.  Are we afraid of silence or starved for it?  When was the last time you found a place of silence and solitude and really listened to what God had to say?  Henri Nouwen summed this topic up this way, "Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life... we do not take the spiritual life seriously if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to him."  LInks: January 23, 2022 Sunday message "The Posture of Silence" (YouTube) January 23, 2022 Sunday message "The Posture of Silence" (Podcast)
