    ADHD and Executive Functioning Challenges

Got ADHD? Do you struggle with executive functions?  Executive functions are all the buzz these days. The question is, what are they? Why are they relevant?  What is and is not an executive function? In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com/) deconstructs executive functions. Moving beyond simple buzzwords and definitions, Jeff explains why common ADHD struggles like task initiation and prioritization are actually outcomes, not the problem itself. ADHD and Motivation in the Context of Executive Functioning Impairments

Got ADHD? Do you struggle with planning, making decisions, procrastinating, and managing time? Do you beat yourself up for being lazy or unmotivated? What is the underlying issue? In this edition of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach, Jeff Copper (https://www.digcoaching.com/), speaks with Dr. Ari Tuckman (https://adultadhdbook.com/) on a new theory of motivation which reveals insights current views can't explain. The model takes into consideration ADHD as an executive function impairment. The view shifts the narrative from unmotivated to highly motivated if you understand the impairment. If you struggle with ADHD, understanding this frame of motivation is something that you've got to listen to.Attention Talk Radio is the leading site for self-help Internet radio shows focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, including managing symptoms of ADHD in adults with ADD or adults who have children with ADHD. Why Your ADHD Strategies Always Fail (And What to Do Instead)

Are you drowning in a sea of ADHD strategies that never seem to stick? In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach Jeff Copper pulls back the curtain on why typical plans, tools, and strategies fail those with ADHD. It isn’t a moral failing, a lack of motivation, or laziness—it’s an engineering problem.Jeff introduces the concept of Cognitive Ergonomics and explains how Dr. Russell Barkley’s model of executive functions proves that using your "weakness to overcome your weakness" is a losing battle.Inside this episode, you’ll discover:•    The fundamental difference between a tool (the shovel) and the effort required to use it.•    Why the "ambiguity" of tasks like writing a blog post triggers procrastination.•    How to stop "squinting" at tasks and start using external accommodations.•    The "Out of Mind" secret to solving complex problems without burning out.If you’re tired of well-intended advice that doesn't account for executive functioning impairments, this is an episode you don’t want to miss.Attention Talk Radio is the leading site for self-help Internet radio shows focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, including managing symptoms of ADHD in adults with ADD or adults who have children with ADHD.Attention Talk Radio, hosted by Jeff Copper, attention and ADHD coach, is designed to help adults (particularly those diagnosed with or impacted by attention deficit disorder or its symptoms) in life or business who are stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated to help them get unstuck and moving forward by opening their minds to pay attention to what works. ADHD and Focus: Are We Focused on the Wrong Thing?

In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach Jeff Copper (https://www.digcoaching.com) challenges the status quo of ADHD management. We often fixate on "fixing focus" or conditioning behavior, but we’re focusing on the wrong thing! ADHD isn’t a behavioral problem; it is a precise executive function impairment.  Cognitive Ergonomics from the Inside Out® is a revolutionary paradigm that shifts the focus from modifying the person to modifying the interface. By applying engineering principles to the intangible world of cognition, we can move past "tangibility bias"—the tendency to only address what we can see—and start implementing adaptive accommodations that provide genuine relief.  From the "universal accommodation" of direct oral conversation to the power of AttentionScope®, this episode explores how to stop "impersonating a neurotypical" and start designing a life that fits your cognitive constraints. If you’re tired of "sucking it up" and are ready for systemic relief that actually works, it’s time to look at ADHD through a new lens.Attention Talk Radio is the leading site for self-help Internet radio shows focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, including managing symptoms of ADHD in adults with ADD or adults who have children with ADHD. Got ADHD? Do you struggle with notes and lists—taking them but not knowing what to do with them, or ending up with lists scattered everywhere? In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach Jeff Copper (https://www.digcoaching.com) explores the functional role of notes and lists to better understand what’s happening cognitively. Sometimes notes help you pay attention in the moment. Other times they serve as a reference to revisit information or a way to synthesize ideas so they’re easier to study and remember. And sometimes, people simply stop using their notes altogether.Jeff breaks down why many people with ADHD repeatedly rewrite daily lists, struggle to act on what’s written, or feel overwhelmed by the whole process. If you’re confused about how notes and lists are supposed to work—or feel like you’re doing them “wrong”—this episode will help clarify their purpose and how to use them more effectively. ADHD, Emotional Intelligence, and Emotional Regulation

ADHD is an executive functioning impairment. Self-regulation is a dominant executive function that involves regulating not only your attention, but also your emotions. While it's not a part of the diagnostic criteria, when emotions are dysregulated, attention is dysregulated. In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com/) interviews Melissa Knight (https://melissaknightcoaching.com/), ADHD coach and disability expert at Lynn University (https://www.lynn.edu/). The two have a direct and honest conversation about the challenges many face around managing emotional intelligence. This is a big challenge. On one level, there's no easy way out. ADHD Through a New Paradigm: Dr. Pomeroy's Inside Out Perspective

ADHD is considered a focus problem. When you dig into it, it's really an executive functioning impairment. Executive functions are a collection of mind tools that you use to solve problems. For those with ADHD, these mind tools are less efficient. Thus, it would seem to be harder for those with ADHD to solve problems like neurotypicals. In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, cognitive engineer and ADHD coach, Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com/), interviews ADHD thought leader, Dr. David Pomeroy. The two discuss Dr. Pomeroy’s lived experience as a physician and a student of Cognitive Ergonomics From the Inside Out—specifically how this new paradigm compares and contrasts to Dr. Pomeroy's prior beliefs. Why Background Noise Helps ADHD Focus

Many people with ADHD discover they focus better with sound in the background—but not just any sound. For some, it’s the subtle hum of a fan or motor, not music or conversation, that makes concentration easier. When loyal listener Jessie shared how low-level background noise helps him focus, it sparked the idea for this episode. In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, host and ADHD coach Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com) explores how white noise—and what he calls white light and white experiences—can create environmental conditions that support focus for the ADHD brain. Joined by co-host Caroline Maguire, Jeff defines these concepts, explains why they work, and shares real-life examples of how adjusting your environment can reduce distraction and improve attention. Behind the Mask: The Emotional Cost of Living with ADHD

ADHD often comes with inconsistency—moments of strong performance followed by periods of underperformance. Over time, this unpredictability can lead individuals to question their abilities and hide their struggles behind carefully constructed defenses. In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, host Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com) speaks with ADDiva Linda Roggli (https://addiva.net), who draws on her lived experience with ADHD and her work as a coach to explore the personas many people adopt to cope and self-protect. From the “perfectionist” and the “superhero” to the “ditz” and other familiar roles, Linda explains how these masks help deflect attention—but at a cost. Together, they examine the emotional toll of maintaining these personas, how exhausting it can be, and the impact it has on one’s sense of self. If you’ve ever felt like you’re hiding in plain sight or afraid of being “found out,” this powerful conversation is one you won’t want to miss.Attention Talk Radio is the leading site for self-help Internet radio shows focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, including managing symptoms of ADHD in adults with ADD or adults who have children with ADHD.
