For the first time since 1924, this massive event is taking over the city of Basel, Switzerland, under the brilliant motto 'Stadt und Land mitenand', bringing city life and country tradition together. Over the duration of the festival, Basel is going to completely transform. We are talking about 12,000 active performers descending on the city. From master yodellers and alphorn players to highly skilled traditional flag-wavers. Plus, over 200,000 visitors are expected to flood the streets to take in the magic. Here is a quick snapshot of what you need to know if you are tuning in or heading out: Over 1,000 judged choir and solo yodelling performances will be taking place inside ten beautiful churches and concert halls across Grossbasel. The party officially starts on Friday. 19th June, at noon when the custom-built 'Yodeller Village' opens up. Saturday features non-stop music and a live national broadcast of Potzmusig. And Sunday wraps up with a massive, colorful Grand Festival Parade cutting through the city at 2:00 PM. The best part? My Ear for You - Just Talk: A Volunteer Phone Line Tackling Loneliness in Switzerland In this conversation, Dr. Olivier Seiler explains the origins and growth of the Swiss initiative "Mein Ohr für Dich" ("My Ear for You"), launched in March 2021 during COVID to offer lonely people a low-threshold way to chat with a real person. The service is not a crisis or suicide helpline. Volunteers mainly discuss everyday topics, and refer distressed callers to other organizations when needed. Around 50 screened and trained volunteers take shifts from home, supported by regular coaching and supervision from founders Philippe (psychologist) and Daniella (coach), plus team gatherings three times a year. The project expanded from an elderly-focused inspiration (the UK's "Silver Line") to all ages and includes a "Tandem Friends" option for weekly calls with the same volunteer while remaining anonymous and not meeting in person. The winner of the 56th Prix Schappo is, "Tram-dem," where over 30 volunteers accompany elderly individuals on public transport, offering safety and companionship, enhancing their independence and easing the lives of their relatives. Then, Mein Ohr für Dich - einfach mal reden! "My ear for you – just talk!"—a free, anonymous phone service providing comfort and companionship to anyone feeling lonely is being awarded the 57th Prix Schappo. Fifty dedicated volunteers operate this service year-round, offering a listening ear and encouraging words. Herzensbilder which loosely translates as "Heart pictures, capturs precious memories for families in challenging times with free professional photography. This initiative has won the 58th Prix Schappo and stands as a testament to the power of capturing love through images. Lastly, "Sprachmobil.ch," a mobile learning service has won the 59th prix schappo. Sprache mobile, or language vehicle, aids refugees in learning German, fostering integration, and boosting confidence through language acquisition. Forty volunteers are central to this educational outreach. The Climate Fund Initiative calls for the federal government to allocate significantly more funds to combating climate change and its consequences. To this end, it should set up a fund and pay in an annual amount equivalent to between 0.5 and 1 per cent of Switzerland's economic output. This corresponds to approximately CHF 4 to 8 billion. The fund is intended to enable the federal government to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, economical and efficient energy consumption, and the expansion of renewable energies. It is also intended to promote CO2 capture and storage and biodiversity. Training and further education for the skilled workers needed to implement the measures would also be supported. The initiative demands that financing and implementation be socially equitable. Currently, married couples in Switzerland are taxed jointly and unmarried couples are taxed individually. In addition, different tax rates apply. This means that married couples and unmarried couples pay different levels of tax. This unequal treatment is to be abolished. Parliament has therefore passed the Federal Act on Individual Taxation. As a referendum has been called on this bill, it will be put to a vote. Under the bill, married couples will also be taxed individually in future. Each person will pay tax on their own income and assets, and the same tax rate will apply to everyone. This means that married couples and comparable unmarried couples will pay the same amount of tax in future. Many couples benefit from this, but some have to pay more. To ensure that couples with children and single parents are not burdened too heavily, the child deduction for direct federal tax will be increased. The bill will reduce the tax burden on taxpayers by an estimated total of CHF 630 million per year in direct federal tax. The cantons will also have to introduce individual taxation. However, each canton will continue to set its own tax rates and child deductions. The bill is an indirect counter-proposal to the Federal Popular Initiative 'For individual taxation regardless of civil status (Fair Taxation Initiative)'. Switzerland Federal Referendum Special - March 8, 2026 Neighbourhood News speaks with Young Liberals President, Cyril Bleisch in a noisy cafe at The Rhine, discussing Switzerland's "200 Sind Genug" or 200 is Enough Initiative.  In the interview with Neighborhood News, Cyril Bleisch, president of the Young Liberals Baselland, explains the "200 Sind Genug" initiative to cut Switzerland's mandatory SRG household fee from 335 to 200 Swiss francs and criticizes the additional enterprise levy based on revenue, even when firms make losses. He argues SRG should focus on its constitutional mission of informing the public rather than spending on entertainment such as movies, series, sports, and numerous social media channels. Bleisch disapproves with the earlier held "No Billag Initiative", citing it as too radical, saying regional and local paper funding would remain, acknowledging potential job cuts, and contends private media could expand as SRG's budget shrinks. He notes the Federal Council's plan to reduce the fee to 300 by 2029 but says deeper reform must happen now. The Annual Siren Test in Switzerland: Ensuring Preparedness and Safety This is probably one of the most importants stories you should listen to, if you live in Switzerland. Join us as we discuss the crucial annual siren test in Switzerland with Mr. Christian Fuchs, co-head of Public Information and Emergencies at the Federal Office for Civil Protection. Learn about the history and purpose of testing the sirens across the country every February, the types of alarms used, and the importance of personal emergency preparedness. Gain insights on the Alert Swiss app and practical tips for maintaining an emergency stockpile, ensuring safety during potential natural or man-made disasters. At 1.30 p.m. the 'general alert' signal is sounded throughout Switzerland. This is a regular ascending and descending tone, which lasts for one minute, and is repeated once after a two-minute interval. Where necessary, the sirens can continue to be tested until 2 p.m. From 2 to 4.30 p.m. (at the latest), the 'water alert' signal is tested in those areas that are close to dams. It consists of twelve low continuous tones lasting twenty seconds and repeated at ten-second intervals. This unique floating library, docked on the Rhine near Basel's historic Middle Bridge, has been captivating young readers for over 44 years. Discover how this ship, filled with new books from 2025, offers a welcoming, fun environment for children to explore literature. Learn about exciting events such as a reading dog, book swaps, author readings, and the newly introduced silent reading rave for teens. Managed by the Department of Education and steeped in tradition, the Youth Book Ship continues to inspire a love for reading.  The Basel youth book ship offers a unique and enjoyable experience for children, teenagers, and adults. With its beanbag flipping, comic flipping, and leisurely strolling through the shelves, the ship provides a relaxed environment for reading. Last year, the book ship welcomed over 13,700 visitors, a record number. The Pedagogy Centre library employees meticulously curated a selection of newly published novels, picture books, and non-fiction books for the ship. The lower deck caters to children up to 10 years old, while the upper deck is designed for young people. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, but groups of eight or more must register in advance. On Saturdays and Sundays, children's book authors and illustrators engage in captivating readings from their books. For instance, Katja Alves reads from her picture book about Gian and Giachen, Lorenz Pauli performs with his narrative theater, and Eva Rust leads through her book "Tümpel." After the readings, the book ship embarks on a short round trip. Additionally, on Wednesday afternoons, children can read to the reading dog, Boy. On Friday, January 30th, the book ship will host a special Silent Reading Rave exclusively for young people aged 12 to 16 years old. This event creates a serene atmosphere where participants can read together and individually simultaneously. The Basler Jugendbücherschiff plays a vital role in promoting reading among children and young people. The third National Railway Congress Bahn26 was held on 16. January in Basel with around 500 participants. After the focus areas on agglomeration traffic (2024) and freight transport (2025), the third National Railway Congress 2026 continued its series under the guiding question "Where is Switzerland going?" We spoke to Esther Keller, Governing Councilor and Head of Construction and Transport Department of Basel-Stadt on various important aspects of the resolution that was signed, Key players discussed the decisive course for a sustainable transport policy. The great response underlines the growing importance of the Congress. This year, the focus was on the transport policy challenges - between the necessary expansion, secured financing and the sustainability of mobility. The Congress made it clear that Switzerland is facing great challenges. At the same time, concrete perspectives and viable ideas exist to further develop the railway as the backbone of the transport system. Among others, Christa Hostettler, Director of the Federal Office of Transport, SBB CEO Vincent Ducrot, ETH professor Ulrich Weidmann and Cloé Jans from gfs.bern provided perspectives. Government representatives from seven cantons, parliamentarians from all parts of the country and representatives from science, business and administration debated on stage. Against this background, the six cantons formulate three central demands on the federal government. They concern the planning, financing and targeted expansion of the rail network: A needs-based planning, in which the offer determines the infrastructure expansion, as well as the binding implementation of the offer targets 2035. The provision of 24 billion francs for the expansion of the railway network according to the "High" scenario of the ETH study "Transport '45". The targeted expansion of the main East-West and North-South axes, the strengthening of regional transport in the agglomerations and the promotion of international rail connections. Regional projects with national benefit In addition to their higher demands, the six cantons are naming concrete projects of supra-regional significance. These projects are intended to eliminate national central bottlenecks and further strengthen international rail transport for people and goods: Cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt Both Basels demand the financing of the Base'Durchmesserlinie' with the aim of better disentwining of regional, long-distance and freight transport for higher capacities. Canton of Geneva Geneva calls for additional capacity at the Geneva Airport station to strengthen the East-West Axis, a new city connection and the expansion of the international Geneva-Lyon line. Canton of Ticino For Ticino, the strengthening of the north-south axis and the axis to Piedmont via Locarno is central. In particular, the general capacity and the travel time between Ticino and Milan are to improve. Canton of Vaud The canton of Vaud is calling for an additional connection Lausanne-Geneve as well as better connections between Western Switzerland and the rest of the country. Canton of Valais The Valais demands the expansion of the Lausanne-Geneva route and the strengthening of international rail transport via the Lötschberg/Simplon ache. A strong common signal Six cantons from a wide variety of parts of the country – from urban agglomerations to alpine regions – are behind a joint resolution. They are faced with similar challenges in rail transport: growing bottlenecks, increasing demand and the need to secure mobility and economic strength. The government representatives emphasize together: "As government representatives of six cantons, we stand united behind this resolution. Despite different starting points, we are now calling for investment in rail transport – with sustainable decisions, reliable financing and responsibility for the future of our country. With their joint resolution, the six cantons are making a clear appeal to the Federal Council. They expect the presented demands and projects to be taken into account in the further prioritization, planning and financing of railway expansion - in the interest of a prosperous and easily accessible Switzerland. For three years, politics and experts from all parts of the country have been meeting in Basel. Until now, Geneva, Ticino, Vaud and Valais were represented as host regions. "The third edition confirms that Basel is not only an important hub in rail transport, but also a central place in the transport policy debate on the railway," says Benno Jurt, public transport delegate of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and chairman of the organizing committee of the National Railway Congress. The railway congress is organized by the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, the Chamber of Commerce of both Basel (HKBB), SBB and trireno. One Of The Most Beautiful Christmas Market In The World One of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe returns to light up the season… Welcome to the Basel Christmas Market. The Basel Christmas market, which is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, will take place this year from 27. November to 23. December 2025 daily from 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. This year, the historic streets and squares of Basel transform once again into a winter wonderland. On Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, nearly 150 lovingly decorated stalls invite you to shop, enjoy, and linger in a magical atmosphere. Twelve new attractions await, from scented candles and whimsical socks to glowing food stalls serving empanadas and sweet treats. Mr Conradin Cramer, the President of the cantonal government and the head of the Presidential Department of Basel-Stadt speaks about the warmth of how the whole city turns into a winter wonderland. Visitors can marvel at the sparkling Christmas tree on Münsterplatz, ride the charming children's carousel, or wander into the fairytale forest, where families can craft gifts, bake bread over open fires, and enjoy the delightful Zirkus Navidad puppet show. The Basler Christmas Market is more than just a feast for the senses—it is a vital part of the city's economy. In 2024, according to a study by BAK Economics AG in cooperation with the Statistical Office of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, visitors to the Basel Christmas Market spent a total of 50 million francs at the Christmas market in 2024 and a further 54 million francs in retail, in the hotel industry, gastronomy and in the cultural industry. This also resulted in creation of 380 jobs. The wages and salaries in the amount of 32 million francs were genrated; creating jobs, supporting local culture, and sustaining the festive spirit of Basel.  Ms Letizia Elia, CEO of Basel Tourism, talks about the year that Basel has had with being a host city of Women's Euro and Eurovision Song Contest. Redefining Civic Duty: Noémie Roten and Switzerland's Referendum on Civic Duty Initiative Noémi Roten, Head of the Initiative Committee and Managing Director of the Citizen Service Association, leads a transformative proposal: the Civic Duty Initiative. Traditionally, Swiss men have faced military service obligations, with limited civilian alternatives. This new initiative proposes a shift to include all young citizens, irrespective of gender, in a broader range of services, including military, civilian, and disaster response. The initiative emerges after a 12-year campaign, advocating a redefinition of national security to involve everyone. Despite opposition from government and parts of society, Roten and her team have surpassed the necessary signatures for a national vote. Their vision aims for societal cohesion and empowerment. Critics point to potential costs and traditional gender roles. Estimates place the financial burden at 1 billion francs annually. However, Roten argues that the benefits, as evidenced by studies in Austria, outweigh these costs. She believes in dismantling stereotypes to achieve equal recognition and compensation for national service. Irrespective of the vote's outcome, Roten remains committed to the dialogue on civic duty and gender equality. She draws inspiration from past societal changes, such as women's voting rights, and foresees continued progress. Over a hundred authors of various genres submitted prose texts, poetry or comics on the topic of Gemeinsam in Basel. About the 'Initiative for a Future' Fedral-level referendum to be held on 30 November 2025  Switzerland is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 – a goal approved by the electorate. To support this, the federal government currently allocates around CHF 2 billion annually to climate-related measures. These funds are primarily raised through consumption-based taxes on thermal and motor fuels. To understand this referendum even further, Neighbouhood News spoke with Rachele Betschart, Co-Vice-President. JUSO (Young Socialists). We delve into her personal-politics, politics of the party, about the initiative itself, and discusss both the scenarios - what if it is a yes or a no. Rachele speaks about what would be the plan B, and why, we should schedule an interview with her in ten years again. The initiative proposes increasing funding for climate policy by introducing a federal inheritance and gift tax. While such taxes have so far only been levied by cantons and communes, the proposal would add a federal tax of 50% on estates and gifts, with the first CHF 50 million exempt. Two-thirds of the revenue would go to the federal government and one-third to the cantons. According to the initiative text, the revenue from the new estate and gift tax must be used "to combat the climate crisis in a socially just manner and to restructure the economy as a whole as necessary to achieve this goal". Recommendation of the Federal Council and Parliament - NO For the Federal Council and Parliament, the initiative is the wrong way to achieve Switzerland's climate goals. In addition, the implementation of the initiative could encourage wealthy individuals and companies to leave Switzerland. This could jeopardise jobs and lead to lower tax revenues than today. Initiative Committee Recommendation - YES For the initiative committee, today's climate policy does not go far enough. More resources are needed to combat the climate crisis. Anyone who jeopardises the natural livelihoods for their profits should be responsible for this. A future tax of 50 percent on inheritances and donations of CHF 50 million is socially just. More than ten volunteers are ready to receive the rescued food and begin the preparatory work: the careful triage, control and compilation of food that would otherwise have ended up in the waste. The men and women in striking red aprons have two hours to prepare the weekly food delivery to people in need. There is no question of routine. Depending on the season, the "menu" changes: vegetables, fruits, drinks, pasta or even unknown, vegan ready meals find the way to "Tischlein deck dich". What was collected in product donations is distributed. Important to know: all products are flawless and enjoyable despite the partially expired sales date - even chilled or frozen foods. Compliance with an unreserved cold chain is meticulously checked. If you want to buy food, you pay a symbolic amount of one franc for each purchase and need a customer card. This is issued by selected social services and handed over to persons entitled to benefit. In Basel, "Tischlein deck dich" supports around 950 people with food help every week. Kasim*, retired and widowed, lives on the subsistence minimum: "Everything very well. Very good. Thank you. Thank you.» From his words you can feel how valuable this service is. A Swiss couple, less than 40 years old and with IV status, do not want to be named: "The relief is enormous, even if this course is not always easy." The fact that this offer saves 160 tons of food every year in the city of Basel alone proves that ecological action and social commitment - hand-in-hand - can have an effect. *Name changed by the editor. About Prix Schappo: The Prix schappo is awarded twice a year to associations or groups that stand up for other people and work with extraordinary voluntary commitment to promote the quality of life in Basel.   "Tischlein deck dich" stands for lived commitment in everyday life Where food is available in excess and is missing elsewhere, the aid organization offers a solution. "Tischlein deck dich" saves food from disposal and brings it to those who need support - to single mothers, chronically ill, the elderly or the unemployed and migrants. With heart, efficiency and humanity, volunteers in Basel distribute more than 160 tons of food to people in need every year. An offer that convinces and shows how more mindfulness and ecological action leads to greater solidarity and concrete support for those affected by poverty. The use of 105 volunteers for a "covered" table of people affected by poverty and for less food waste deserves great respect. It is also on the list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. It usually begins the Monday following Ash Wednesday. However, Charivari a term historically associated with noisy public processions and folk celebrations has a unique and fascinating presence in Basel Switzerland, while often overshadowed internationally by basel's famed Faschnacht. Charivari celebrations form an essential part of the city's cultural fabric blending centuries old customs with evolving local expressions. Today we delve into the Origins history, evolution, and present day traditions of Charivari in Basel, contextualizing it within Swiss cultural heritage. As the tickets go on sale for the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026, we spoke to Eric Julliard, the producer of Charivari in Klein Basel, about the tradition, the future, the soul of Charivari. And where does humor stand when globally, it is increasingly under threat. What is Charivari? Charivari is a Carnival Show in the Fox House with about 600 seats a night. So 10,000 total is nothing else than a show which wants to show the different traditions of fast, not in a very traditional way, in a very innovative way, but always on a high standard.  The Basel Carnival, or Fasnacht, is a centuries-old tradition that uniquely blends art, culture, and satire, recognized as part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. While the main celebration begins on the Monday following Ash Wednesday, the city of Basel comes alive months in advance with a series of pre-Carnival traditions. Among these is the vibrant Charivari Klein Basel, a beloved pre-Fasnacht event that has been entertaining audiences for fifty years. Charivari, takes place in the Glaibasel, the smaller district of Basel on the far side of the Rhine. The event unfolds in a theater seating around 600 guests each night, totaling roughly 10,000 visitors over its run. Unlike many professional productions, every performer in Charivari is a non-professional local artist or musician. "They go to work the next day," notes Producer Eric Julliard, emphasizing that the authenticity and charm of the performance come from the community itself. This year's theme, "From the People, For the People," reflects that spirit. The show serves as a lively showcase of the traditions and humor that make Fasnacht so distinctive. Although the Carnival itself lasts only three days, the preparation begins months earlier, with cliques and Guggenmusik bands practicing their drumming and piccolo routines throughout the city. Charivari embodies this buildup towards Basel Faschnacht or the Basel Carnival, offering a program filled with music, satire, and laughter. Its roots trace back to the rebellious origins of Fasnacht, when Protestants defied Catholic austerity, took to the streets in masks, and used humor and noise as tools of social commentary. Provocation remains central to the event's character. Each performance weaves in jokes, wordplay, and poetic verses delivered in Basel German, poking fun at politicians, local authorities, and even global figures like the American president. Yet the humor never turns bitter. Instead, audiences leave clutching their stomachs from laughter, entertained by the combination of wit, music, and theatrical performance. Julliard explains that the show's humor is inseparable from its live context: "When I read the script, I don't even smile. But in rehearsal, I die laughing. A book would never work—it needs the atmosphere, the acting, and the energy of the room." Despite its decades-long run, Charivari Klein Basel is a relatively modern tradition compared to the centuries-old Fasnacht. Its success is fueled by an extensive network of volunteers—over 150 each year—who manage everything from stage production to guest services. Between 300 and 500 cast members participate annually, and the event is largely self-funded, with 92% of its revenue coming from ticket sales, supplemented by sponsorships, a bar, and a restaurant. The show operates without government funding yet remains financially stable. Looking ahead, the future of Shawa seems bright. In recent years, youth participation in Fasnacht traditions has been rising again, ensuring a new generation of drummers, piccolo players, and performers. Julliard attributes the event's appeal not only to the quality of the performances but to the overall experience it offers: from smooth ticketing and a welcoming venue to the post-show drinks and celebrations.
