I Said I'd Never Go Back (Jo Moment)
You know that decision you made with absolute certainty, the one you swore was final? Today we hand you a permission slip to revisit it, without shame, without guilt, and without needing to justify yourself to anyone. Jo Stone shares a familiar “every few years” season where she starts questioning everything: who she is, what she wants, what she values, and whether the paths she ruled out still deserve a hard no.Here’s the twist: Jo feels pulled back towards the corporate world after once saying she’d never return. Not as an employee, but as a consultant whose zone of genius is spotting the pattern before the room does. She talks about listening to someone’s story and reflecting back what’s really going on underneath, the invisible rules, identity scripts, and the leadership dynamics that shape behaviour. With so many workplaces stuck in restructures, disengagement, and fear, she argues that clear-eyed pattern recognition and honest feedback have never been more needed in a boardroom. We also dig into a practical mindset shift: staying curious instead of staying loyal to a decision made by a past version of you. If something you thought you’d outgrown starts “knocking” again, Jo invites you to explore it, ask the question, and open the door just enough to see what’s there. No dramatic reinvention required, just a willingness to learn what’s true now.If you’re navigating a career change, returning to corporate, leadership challenges, or workplace politics, this bite-sized reset will land. And you can DM Jo at any of the links below if you want to talk about how she might be able to help you, your team or your organisation more broadly.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. You Can’t Think Your Way Out of This One
Save Your Spot at Get Your Brain Back in 5 Days https://www.balanceinstitute.com/brainbackYou know that moment when the meeting ended hours ago, but your brain is still sitting at the table? You’re making dinner, driving the kids, lying in bed and somehow you’re also replaying the look someone gave, rewriting what you should’ve said, and rehearsing tomorrow like it’s already happening. If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t switch off, we get right to the point: your mind isn’t broken, it’s doing what it has been trained and rewarded to do.We unpack why overthinking and rumination feel like “being responsible” for high-performing women, especially when work uncertainty, economic uncertainty, and constant change crank up the pressure. Thinking has delivered results for decades: planning, anticipating, problem-solving, staying three steps ahead. So when life gets wobbly, the brain reaches for the strategy that’s always worked and does more of it. The catch is that another lap around the thought at 3 am doesn’t create better outcomes, it just keeps your nervous system activated and pulls you out of your actual life.We also talk about why common work-life balance advice can miss the mark. You can set boundaries, put your phone in another room, even meditate, and still run a full meeting in your head with no keyboard in sight. The real shift is learning when thinking deserves your attention, and building the skill of interrupting the pattern in the moment it shows up, at the sink, in the car, mid-conversation.If you want to practise with support, I share my free five-day WhatsApp series, Get Your Brain Back, starting 24 August, with one tiny five-minute practice each morning. Who Is in Control of Your Brain? (Jo Moment)
Get Your Brain Back - A free 5-Day Experience to interrupt the spirals that steal your time, energy and attention. We start 24th August.🧠 Click here to save your free spotYour mind can be sharp enough to solve big, gnarly problems at work and chaotic enough to obsess over bananas five seconds later. We’re talking about that relentless, background “thinking” that so many women carry every day: the mental load, the distractions, the spirals, and the quiet exhaustion that comes from never truly switching off.We dig into why the usual tips don’t stick, because they rarely touch the real driver underneath overthinking. Our brains are incredible at producing thoughts, but they’re not designed to filter for what matters most or to dwell on the good stuff. Left unattended, they catastrophise, run wild “what if” chains, and keep us staring at the ceiling at 3am. If you’ve ever felt your mind hijack your calm, your sleep, or your presence, you’ll recognise this instantly.Jo shares a brutally honest moment of being “off with the fairies” while her daughter is talking, which lands as a reminder of what distraction actually costs us: the moments we can’t get back. With more inputs than ever and a new era of outsourcing thinking to AI, we explore a practical question that cuts through the noise: are you in control of your brain, or is your brain controlling you?Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. The Workplace Shift Nobody's Talking About
If you want to know which patterns are showing up for you in light of this shift, take our brand new free Success Strategy Assessment.Work feels like it is speeding up while the ground keeps shifting underneath us. One minute we are told to move faster, take more risks, and “fail forward”; the next minute we are trapped in red tape, risk aversion, and a culture that rewards visibility over real value. I unpack what I am seeing across workplaces right now: low-growth pressure, restructures and acquisitions, return-to-office mandates, and the growing uncertainty of AI and automation, especially for white-collar roles in middle to senior management. When that pressure hits, it does not just change workloads, it wakes up old patterns. We talk about the urge to overdeliver so you feel indispensable, the way perfectionism spikes when stakes feel higher, and how boundaries collapse through after-hours emails, constant notifications, and never truly switching off. I also name the “invisible work” so many women carry: picking up what falls through the cracks, holding team emotions, and absorbing the impact of company decisions as if they are personal responsibilities. You will leave with language to recognise what is happening in your body and behaviour, plus a clearer lens for sorting strategic effort from survival mode. If you are noticing people pleasing, micromanaging, procrastination, shame spirals, or decision paralysis creeping back, you are not broken, the rules have changed and you can adapt without burning out again. No One Tells You How Hard It Is To Be Yourself (Jo Moment)
“Just be yourself” sounds empowering until you realise it gives you nothing to do. If you’ve spent years being the capable one, the reliable one, the person who can carry everything, you might not even notice how often you edit yourself to stay safe and loved. Jo Stone unpacks why this common advice can feel hollow for women in midlife, and why the real work is less about thinking your way into authenticity and more about living your way there. We talk identity shift and reinvention as a series of tiny experiments: saying the thing you’d normally swallow, wearing what feels a bit bold, letting someone be disappointed, and practising boundaries without a colour-coded life plan. Along the way, Jo shares how self-discovery often begins with small “hang on” moments, like realising your default answers are just old habits. That simple noticing becomes a powerful tool for personal growth because it helps you collect evidence of who you are now, not who you were trained to be.The deeper layer is the part many people don’t say out loud: the fear of being too much. Too opinionated, too bossy, too weird, too fast. We explore how your nervous system can treat honesty as a threat to belonging, and why the uncomfortable middle of change can feel unsettling even when you’re moving in the right direction. If you’re in that in-between space, consider the reframe: maybe you’re not lost, maybe you’ve stopped pretending you’ve already arrived. If this lands, subscribe to Balance and Beyond, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find these bite-sized breakthroughs.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. The Hidden Strategy Behind Your Success
Discover your dominant Success Strategy here. You can be capable, reliable and wildly productive, and still feel like your life no longer fits. That tension is often not a motivation problem. It can be a success strategy that worked brilliantly for years, then quietly started costing more than it gives back.We dig into how patterns like over-helping, over-planning, over-working and over-perfecting become default settings in the brain. When a strategy brings rewards like validation, promotions or praise, it can shift from something you do into something you believe you are. The tricky part is the blind spots: we stop noticing the emotional labour, the cognitive load, the resentment, the constant vigilance or the fear of stillness that rides along with the “success”.I walk you through five common success strategies I see in women’s coaching and leadership work: the Sponge, the Controller, the Hustler, the Achiever and the Pleaser. You’ll hear what each one looks like at its best, what it costs over time, and the key question each strategy needs to face when life gets more complex. We also break down why generic productivity and mindset tips can fail, because two women can share the same symptoms, like overwhelm and exhaustion, but need completely different solutions depending on what is driving them.If you’re ready to stop playing whack-a-mole with your wellbeing, listen now, take the free success strategy assessment in the show notes, then subscribe, share with a friend and leave a review so more women can find what they need.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. When Your Whole Life Feels Like It's at a Crossroads (Jo Moment)
We talk about why so many of us feel stuck at multiple crossroads at once, from work and relationships to health and identity. We share a simple filter that cuts through overthinking by separating irreversible choices from decisions you can test and adjust. • feeling overwhelmed by interconnected decisions and too many options • why more information and more choice can create decision paralysis • using the one-way door vs two-way door framework • examples of reversible decisions in career and health choices • treating two-way doors as experiments so outcomes become information • giving ourselves permission to make mistakes and move faster If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. Why So Many Successful Women Are Questioning Everything
If you feel like you’re holding a dozen competing problems and somehow still making no real progress, you’re not broken, you’re overloaded. Jo Stone speaks straight to high-achieving women who look fine on the outside but privately know the old model of success no longer fits. The cultural conversation used to centre on burnout and pushing through. Now it’s fractured into a “soup” of questions about career change, perimenopause and hormones, neurodiversity, parenting pressures, ageing parents, and even how AI is reshaping work. We talk about the quiet grief that can hit when you finally “arrive” and realise it doesn’t feel the way you expected. That emotional clash often sends us searching for certainty through more books, more specialists, more podcasts, more hacks. The twist is that knowledge isn’t the main problem anymore. The real challenge is deciding what applies to you, first, and resisting the temptation to outsource your judgement to the loudest expert voice, the most convincing algorithm, or the latest trend in women’s health and wellbeing. Jo unpacks how decision fatigue shows up as productivity, how perfectionism keeps you gathering information instead of making change, and why “fixing” your hormones or routines won’t automatically solve a toxic workplace or missing boundaries. The goal is to find the one question that will move the needle most in your life right now, then take small, deliberate steps that rebuild trust in your inner knowing. If this resonates, listen through, then tap “send a message to Jo” and tell us what question is on repeat for you. The Most Valuable Failure I've Had This Year (Jo Moment)
I cancel a workshop after ticket sales fall flat, and I unpack why that “public failure” ends up being one of my most valuable lessons this year. I show how to separate disappointment from self-doubt so we can move faster, learn more, and stop paying the hidden cost of personalising outcomes. • cancelling a workshop after strong early signs but no sales • perfectionism wounds and the urge to make it mean something • how personalising failure becomes expensive over time • why speed matters and self-doubt slows us down • the difference between disappointment and losing confidence • treating outcomes as experiments to protect self-worth • using feedback and data to refine and try again • the question that reveals what we are ignoring If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. What Your Escape Fantasy Is Really Trying to Tell You
Your feed isn’t random. If you’ve been obsessing over chateau renovations, Tuscan villas, eco farms, bookshops, or van life, it might not be wanderlust at all. It might be the clearest signal you’ve had in years that the old model of success no longer fits and that something in you is asking to come back online. I talk through why so many high-achieving women in their 40s and 50s are having an “escape fantasy” moment, even when they have the career, the family, the home, and the life they once wanted. We pull apart the classic midlife crisis narrative and name what the quieter, heavier version can look like for women: back-to-back meetings, constant notifications, school logistics, emotional labour, and a creeping numbness that makes you wonder where the fun went. Then we get practical and honest about what “France” really represents: lightness, freedom, presence, aliveness, and a life that feels like yours again. Instead of the false binary of blowing it all up or sucking it up, we explore how to use your fantasies as a signpost, uncover what you’re truly longing for, and make space for change that’s real and sustainable. If you’ve been thinking, surely I’m made for more than this, you’ll feel seen here. Why Work Doesn't Work Anymore
Work is louder than ever, and plenty of us are calling that “progress” while quietly wondering why we’re exhausted. I sit down with Dr Kat Page, organisational psychologist, leadership adviser and author of Good Work: Transforming Your Work from the Inside Out, to name what’s actually broken and what we can redesign so women don’t have to keep paying the price with their health, time and identity. We talk about the modern intensity trap: constant interruptions, longer days, and the very real second and third shifts many women carry. Kat unpacks why “be more resilient” is the wrong default, how Australia’s psychosocial safety focus can help shift responsibility back to workplaces, and why we need to stop measuring productivity as hours. With AI changing what work looks like, the new benchmark is value: judgement, creativity, learning, problem solving and the quality of conversations, even when that doesn’t deliver the dopamine hit of ticking a task off a list.We also go deep on the inner work. How do you hear your own voice when the collective definition of success is so loud? What does it take to build boundaries in a boundaryless world, tolerate the discomfort of disappointing people, and make brave career choices like moving to a purpose-led role or building a portfolio career? If you’ve been asking “Do I even want to be here anymore?”, you’re not alone.Subscribe for more honest conversations, share this with a woman who needs it, and leave a review to help the Ripple Effect reach the people it’s meant for.Want to learn more about how to redesign your relationship with work?Connect with Dr. Kat Page here: https://www.drkatpage.com/Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. If you’re the woman who keeps everything running, explains yourself three times, softens your truth, and carries everyone else’s emotional load, this conversation will hit. I’m Jo Stone, and I’m sharing the real reason so many high performing women feel stuck: it’s not a lack of tools, it’s loyalty to an identity that once kept you safe and now keeps you small. We unpack “Friday Night Jo”, the version of me who stops cushioning, stops apologising in advance, and just says the thing. What shocked me wasn’t backlash, it was relief. Directness took less energy, not more, and it became more useful for my clients because it landed cleanly. We talk about over responsibility, people pleasing, and the fear under the fear: if you stop being the helper or the reliable one, what if the version that emerges is “too much”, selfish, or a bad mum? You’ll also hear Lindsay’s story and her “Crazy Craft Lady” identity shift, a grounded example of how confidence and boundaries aren’t a performance, they’re a bridge back to who you actually are. We call out the most believable trap of all, “not a good time”, and why ready isn’t a feeling, it’s a decision. Why So Many Women Are Afraid to Feel Their Feelings
Doors are now open for the July 6 intake of Balance & Beyond! If you've recognised yourself in the patterns we've explored in this episode and you're ready to move beyond awareness into real change, we'd love to support you. Find out more and book a conversation with our team here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/balance-and-beyondYou can look successful and still feel like you’re carrying a hidden load that never lets you fully exhale. We’re naming that load for what it often is: years of swallowed anger, grief, resentment and overwhelm that don’t disappear, they collect. Jo Stone sits down with coach Jaclyn to unpack “emotional constipation” and the way unfelt emotions leak out sideways as snappy replies, sudden tears, impatience, numbness, and that brittle sense of holding it all together on thin ice. We get honest about why high achieving women avoid feelings in the first place: no one modelled how to feel emotions without spraying them on others, and our identity gets tied to doing, productivity and achievement. We talk emotional hygiene, the myth of “I’ll deal with it on holidays”, and the real cost of emotional suppression on the nervous system, burnout symptoms, sleep issues and the slow loss of aliveness, friendships and joy. Then we move into what actually helps. Jaclyn explains why somatic work can create safety, how listening to sensation in the body shifts what the mind can’t think its way through, and why support matters when blind spots keep the old pattern running. You’ll hear what becomes possible when emotions move: clearer boundaries, more satisfaction at work, and a softer, more present version of you at home. We unpack four patterns that commonly show up as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses in modern life, and why they’re so easy to mistake for personality traits. Urgency can masquerade as being driven and reliable. Busyness can masquerade as productivity while you outrun insecurity and the fear of not being good enough. Over-researching can masquerade as being thorough and intelligent while you avoid committing to a decision. And “emotional intelligence” can slide into smoothing, people pleasing, and self-abandonment when you edit yourself to avoid someone else’s reaction. The core takeaway is simple but confronting: the problem isn’t the behaviour, it’s what the behaviour is protecting you from feeling. Awareness helps you spot the pattern, but lasting change comes from learning to catch it in real time, in the meeting, in the conversation, and in the moment your body starts to rush, freeze, or comply. If you’re ready to stop living on autopilot, listen through and then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so it reaches the women it’s meant for.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. The Success Trap Nobody Warns High Achievers About
Doors are now open for the July 6 intake of Balance & Beyond! If you've recognised yourself in the patterns we've explored in this episode and you're ready to move beyond awareness into real change, we'd love to support you. Find out more and book a conversation with our team here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/balance-and-beyondYou can tick every box and still feel strangely flat. The house, the title, the money, the promotion, the “finally” moment arrives and instead of joy you feel… relief. I’m Jo Stone, and I want to name what so many high achieving women whisper to themselves: the scoreboard version of success is loud, public, and measurable, but it often has very little to do with fulfilment, presence, or feeling at home in your own life. We dig into the real moments that stop you mid-stride and make you think, yes, this is why I’m here. Not the new car or the next big goal, but the random Tuesday stuff: the drive home where your head goes quiet, the dinner where you actually see your partner, the meeting where you say the true thing without marinating in it for hours, the night you can relax even if the bench is not clean. We also talk about why ambition isn’t the enemy, and how hustle culture teaches us to walk straight past the moments that matter because they don’t look “big enough”. Then we tackle the moving goalposts pattern head-on, including my half marathon moment where I changed the target mid-run and robbed myself of the win. And we land in the story that rewired everything for me: a Disneyland rule about hugs, a timer, and a two and a half minute hug in a hallway that became the clearest definition of success I’ve ever had. If you’ve been craving work-life balance, deeper connection, and a calmer nervous system without giving up your drive, this is your reminder that you don’t need a new life, you need more of you back in the one you’ve already built. If this resonates, follow or subscribe, share it with a woman who’s tired of the scoreboard, and leave a review so the Ripple Effect reaches who it’s meant for.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. Three Things That Changed How I Experience Life (Jo Moment)
Turning 47 comes with a surprising data point: it’s supposedly the peak age of unhappiness, yet I feel like an outlier. I share the three changes that help me unlock more happiness without needing an easier life. • the research on midlife unhappiness and why it might show up around 47 • reframing the traits I used to hide as my zone of genius • dropping the chameleon habit and saying the thing • noticing how over-relying on intellect keeps me stuck in my head • building trust in intuition and body signals as another intelligence • learning presence by understanding the neuroscience first • turning down frantic future-thinking without losing ambition • exploring body wisdom and what kinesiology unlocked for me If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. Why You Can Manage 1,000 People But Lose It Over a Lunchbox
You can run a team, lead through crisis, and keep a brave face all day then come undone over a lunchbox, socks, or a towel on the floor. We call it the “duck on a pond”: polished and capable on the surface, frantic paddling underneath. If that’s you, you’re not failing at life, you’re running on empty, and home is where the mask finally drops.Joe is joined by coach Sabina to get honest about why high-achieving women so often give work the best of their energy and leave family with the scraps. We dig into the real drivers behind burnout and emotional blow-ups: the split between your professional persona and your personal self, the guilt and shame spiral that follows, and the “proving energy” that keeps your brain in constant overdrive. Think imposter syndrome, second-guessing, planning for every scenario, and trying to stay on top of everything, even when your actual to-do list hasn’t changed. We also tackle the moment many women hit: “You don’t understand my job, there’s nothing I can do.” Sabina shares why that’s the exact cue to stop, not sprint, and how reflection, boundaries, and the right support can help you become calmer, more focused, and more present at home without automatically quitting your role. The payoff is real: better relationships, new memories, and a return to feeling like yourself. If this resonates, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s paddling hard under the water, and leave a review so more women can find a better way forward.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. The Asterisk On Everything You Do For Yourself (Jo Moment)
We realise how often “self-care” comes with an asterisk, where we only do things for ourselves if we can justify them. We challenge ourselves to find what actually makes us feel alive, not just what keeps us functioning. • asking what we’ve done this week just for us • noticing the qualifiers that turn self-care into damage control • spotting guilt, shame, and “insurance policy” habits in our routines • sorting habits into draining activities versus nourishing activities • recognising when nourishing only brings us back to baseline • exploring what “feeling alive” can look like in 30 seconds • remembering the version of us outside roles and responsibilities If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. If you’ve ever sat down for a break and stood back up minutes later with no real reason, you’re not broken and you’re not doing self-care wrong. We talk honestly about why so many high-achieving women live in overdrive, where stopping feels more dangerous than continuing, even when burnout is already knocking. We dig into the sneaky ways productivity hijacks recovery: “resting” with the inbox open, turning downtime into life admin, and keeping noise on because silence feels unbearable. We also name the two-speed pattern that traps so many of us, pushing until collapse then getting up the second the worst passes. When the body has to force a stop through exhaustion, illness, or pain, it never feels like a choice, and that’s where the cycle tightens. The heart of the conversation is identity. If you grew up learning that being useful equals being good, and being lazy is the worst insult, then rest can feel like you’re becoming someone you’ve spent your whole life trying not to be. We unpack how standards, fear of letting people down, and the need to be “the strong one” can keep your nervous system stuck on high alert, no matter how many holidays you book. If you’re ready to understand what stopping actually means to you, I share why I created The Overdrive Reset and how you can join for free. It's Rigged: The Game Keeping You Feeling Behind

If your gut answer is a tired laugh, you’re not alone, and you’re not failing. I’m unpacking the uncomfortable truth behind why so many high-achieving women feel permanently behind: we’ve been playing a rigged game where feeling okay is conditional on getting on top of everything. We pull apart the rules of that game, including the never-ending list that has to be ticked off before you’re “allowed” to rest. The kicker is that a huge chunk of the list sits outside your control: kids’ moods, bosses’ deadlines, hormones, family expectations, and the general pace of the world right now. When your nervous system is waiting for perfect conditions to relax, it never gets the signal that you’re safe. So we default to what we know: grip tighter, do more, go faster, and call it “coping” while our bodies quietly run on fumes.I also name the three big control strategies I see again and again: the 3 am spiral and doom scroll, overcompensating through perfectionism and over-delivering, and the shutdown that looks like numb scrolling on the couch. Then we talk about the escape fantasy, selling the house and starting again, and why it doesn’t fix the internal rules you’ve been living by. Why You're Rehearsing Conversations Instead of Having Them
You know that moment where you “win” the conversation in the shower, deliver the perfect line in your head at 2am, then smile politely in real life and say nothing? That loop isn’t harmless. It’s conversation debt, and it quietly drains your focus, your sleep, your relationships, and your sense of self.We talk through why these avoided conversations stack up with your boss, your partner, your team, your friends, and your family and why the weight is never just one chat, it’s the whole pile. We also unpack the shift that changes everything: by the time you finally speak, you’re often not starting an open conversation, you’re prosecuting a case. Your brain’s pattern recognition finds “evidence” on command, your words come out loaded with judgement, and the other person feels ambushed and gets defensive. Then we go to the real core. Under the accusations is usually something tender, vulnerable, and deeply human: I’m exhausted. I want to be seen. I want to matter. I don’t know how to say this without falling apart. When you’re running on fumes, it’s easier to wear armour through overfunctioning, people-pleasing, and mind-reading, but your body keeps the score through tension, 2am ceiling stares, and that low-level simmer that leaks into everything. If you’re ready to break the rumination loop, I also invite you to join me at the Overdrive Reset, a free eight-day reset starting 28 May (link in the show notes). What No One Tells You About Leaving Corporate
The next promotion can be the moment you realise you’re done climbing. Not because you’ve lost your edge, but because you can finally see what the next rung will cost your energy, your health, and your sense of self. I’m hearing this from smart, senior women again and again, and it’s why I’m sharing what I’ve learned from making the jump from corporate to entrepreneurship after 20 years inside the system. I break down five lessons that don’t come from a quick Google search: how to stop relying on external validation when there are no KPIs or gold stars, how to handle failure and rejection without taking every wobble personally, and how to avoid “shiny new toy syndrome” when you’re suddenly free to do anything. We also talk about the uncomfortable truth of modern business ownership: whether you sell services, consulting, coaching, or products, you are the product, and personal brand matters more than most corporate high achievers expect. The biggest takeaway is the one I wish I’d heard earlier: your business will never outgrow your identity. Money beliefs, worthiness, fear of being seen, and perfectionism show up fast, so the personal development work is part of the business plan. If you’re considering leaving corporate, starting a side hustle, or building something more aligned with your values, this will help you create runway, build resilience, and design a business that works with you instead of against you. How to Stay Sane in a World That's Gone Bat Shit Crazy
The world feels like it’s running on rocket fuel and a lot of women are holding it together with white knuckles. I break down what’s happening underneath the overwhelm using simple neuroscience. We zoom out to name the macro stressors many of us are swimming in: global and political instability, economic unpredictability, constant corporate restructures, and the creeping question of what AI means for our jobs and identity. Then we go underneath the surface, into nervous system regulation and stress physiology. Your brain is built to keep you alive and conserve energy, so uncertainty lights up an ancient survival system that can’t tell the difference between a lion and a notification. That’s why doom-scrolling feels irresistible: it’s your brain hunting for information to feel safe, inside a feed that never ends. From there, we unpack a deceptively simple paradox: we need certainty and we need variety. Chosen variety is fun. Unwanted variety is a problem, and right now many of us are drowning in it. When the gap between the certainty you need and the certainty available gets too wide, old survival strategies come roaring back perfectionism, overworking, people-pleasing, procrastination dressed up as “strategy”. Trying harder with new routines and tighter control only adds fuel to chronic nervous system activation. We finish with three practical steps to help you feel more steady: notice your patterns with curiosity, get ruthless about what’s actually in your control, and try 24 hours off the feed to stop outsourcing safety to your phone. If this lands, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s white-knuckling life, and leave a review. I use a simple reframe, “I get to”, to interrupt that loop and take my power back in the middle of real life. • the dog-walk moment that triggers the “have to” spiral • why obligation creates shame, guilt, resentment and a victim mindset • how “I get to” shifts choice and control in seconds • the subconscious mind effect and the captain and engine room metaphor • why state control matters when the world feels chaotic • a practical challenge to swap one phrase today and observe the change If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. How to Upgrade Your Brain's Ancient Wiring
Your brain isn’t failing you. It’s doing its best with ancient wiring in a world of endless emails, Slack pings, AI pressure and a culture that rewards output over wellbeing. I’m joined by Dara Simkin, co-author of Full Stack Human, to reframe what so many high achieving women privately fear: that they can’t keep up because something is wrong with them. Dara’s take is both grounded and liberating, we don’t need more optimisation, we need an upgrade back to being human. We unpack the Full Stack Human “tech stack”, starting with play as a serious, science backed tool for sustainable performance and nervous system health. Dara explains how play fuels the brain with feel good chemistry, why curiosity is an evolutionary advantage, and how hope and intelligent optimism help us move from doom and gloom into practical action. We also explore embodied adaptability, the idea that real flexibility comes from involving the body, not just thinking harder, especially when life feels high stakes and out of control. Then we name the quieter danger before burnout: Achievement Syndrome. We look at how validation, trophies, promotions and perfectionism can fuse identity to output, and why the next gold star never delivers what we think it will. Dara shares a gentler path forward through tiny micro practices that are easy to repeat, plus one powerful nightly question that shifts the benchmark from performance to presence: “How was I a human today?” Full Stack Human is available now online and in bookstores. The Sentence Every High Achiever Needs to Hear (Jo Moment)
We unpack why tying your identity to your job makes you fragile, especially as AI speeds up role change and redundancy. We share how to build a more fluid sense of self so you can pivot without losing confidence or peace. • a single line that reframes job identity as risk • how high-achieving women get rewarded into identity fusion • the hidden costs of overwork and never switching off • why AI exposure can hit older, educated, higher paid women • what redundancy triggers: grief, over-responsibility, loss of confidence • why more qualifications are not the real fix • building a fluid identity by shedding labels and conditioning • the must-have skill for the future: adapting without panic If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. When You Are the Problem (And the Solution)
The most confronting reason we stay stuck often isn’t a lack of time, talent, or confidence. It’s the moment you realise you’re the one holding you back and you can’t seem to stop, even though you can see the pattern coming a mile away.I’m sharing what I’ve learned from working with 500+ successful women who feel trapped in people pleasing, perfectionism, overthinking, and rescuing everyone else. We talk about why “just set a boundary” can collapse the second guilt hits, why delegating can feel unbearable when your standards are wired for speed and control, and why being needed starts to look like the same thing as being valuable. If you’ve ever found yourself saying yes before you even meant to, then swimming in resentment later, you’ll recognise this instantly. We also pull apart the myth that more discipline will fix it. Willpower is finite, it depletes when you’re tired, and it can’t keep up with the hundreds of micro-decisions you make every day. What’s really running the show is an old internal operating system built for a previous definition of success, one that links rest to earning, mistakes to danger, and stopping to falling behind. The shift isn’t about trying harder; it’s about rewiring so your ambition becomes sustainable and your work-life balance stops being a constant battle. If this lands for you, subscribe to Balance and Beyond, share it with a woman who needs the words, and leave a review so it reaches the people it’s meant for.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. The Real Reason You're Busy But Going Nowhere
You can be flat out from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep and still feel like nothing that matters is getting done. We’re talking about why that happens, and why “I need more time” is often the wrong diagnosis. The real issue is what your life is full of, and how the small, noisy stuff expands until it crowds out the big, quiet priorities. We use a simple metaphor that lands hard: a jar filled with rocks, pebbles, and sand. Sand is the constant stream of emails, meetings you do not need, fixing problems that are not yours, redoing work instead of coaching, and filling every gap in your calendar to prove you are working. It is not evil, but it is addictive because it delivers quick wins and a dopamine hit. The catch is brutal: sand creates more sand. The more reactive you are, the more interruptions you attract, and the further you drift from the work that would actually move your career, relationships, and wellbeing forward. Then we name the rocks: strategic thinking, the difficult conversation you have been avoiding, the meaningful project that is important but not urgent, real rest that restores you, and being present with the people you love. Rocks do not scream for attention, so in a loud world they get postponed, sometimes until you cannot even remember what your rock is anymore. The practical shift is straightforward: put the rocks in first, and before you say yes, ask whether the request is sand or a rock. The key question is not “Do I have time?” but “Is this worth giving my time to?”If this hit home, subscribe, share it with a woman who needs it, and leave a review so it reaches the people it’s meant for.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. What 30 Days of Being Visible Taught Me (Jo Moment)
I force myself to be visible for 30 days and discover three tough truths that change how I think about posting online. I stop chasing gold stars, lean into raw human content, and realise the fastest path forward is consistency, not perfection. • admitting the real reason I hide from certain platforms and what judgement fear looks like in practice • dropping microtracking and refusing to let likes and impressions define success • noticing how unpredictable algorithms are and why “hacks” distract from the work • shifting to holistic trends and a success measure I can control • learning that raw posts outperform polished ones because people want real • stopping the endless prep cycle and choosing action over gear and research • remembering most people scroll on and judge far less than I think If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. If You're Not This Job, Who Are You?
If your identity is glued to your job title, the future of work can feel like a personal threat. We are moving fast towards portfolio careers, multiple income streams, and roles that shift or disappear, and that change exposes a deeper question: if you are not the title, who are you? That is why visibility is not just a career strategy. It is identity work. We talk about why so many high performing women were taught to stay heads down, be brilliant, and let the work speak, then wonder why networking and “put yourself out there” advice feels so wrong. When visibility gets tangled with tall poppy syndrome, it can feel like bragging, performing competence, or asking for validation. Yet we are living in an attention economy where reputation is currency, relationships matter, and waiting to be shoulder tapped is a risky plan, especially with automation and AI reshaping what “safe” work looks like. We also unpack the generational contrast of people who post freely because their identity is more fluid, and what we can learn from that without losing professionalism. The takeaway is practical and human: start separating who you are from what you do, build relationships before you need them, and practise being seen without over preparing. Start small. Renovate one room at a time. If this lands for you, subscribe, share it with a woman who needs to hear it, and leave a review so the Ripple Effect reaches the people it is meant for.Send a text message to JoThe Balance & Beyond Podcast Hosted by Jo Stone, founder of The Balance InstituteFor women who are already succeeding, but beginning to wonder if they're willing to keep losing themselves in the process. We know high achievers, because we are one. A 12-year-old’s “raw dogging it” car ride sparks a sharp look at how easily we turn even the smallest moments into managed outcomes. We unpack how perfectionism hides as preparation and how choosing a little more spontaneity can give us our lives back. • a funny teen phrase that reveals a deeper truth about control • how capable, high-achieving women over-engineer small moments • the hidden cost of managing every outcome and every minute • why “high standards” can be perfectionism in disguise • practising being surprised and doing things without a plan • letting the email, the decision and the car ride be messy enough If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. Champagne Problems: When Life Is Good But You're Not
Success can look dazzling and still feel hollow. We sit with that tension and name it for what it is: champagne problems, the invisible strain of having a good job, a loving family, and a beautiful life on paper while battling self-doubt, numbness, and the Sunday night scaries. Drawing on insights from 500 women, I unpack why this guilt loop is so sticky when there’s no obvious villain and why that makes change feel harder to justify.Across this conversation, we separate external success from internal wellbeing and explore the widening gap many high-achievers quietly carry. We talk through the subtle signs—3 a.m. anxiety, clenched jaws, the fantasy of driving into the sunset—and how isolation amplifies the shame of not loving what you’ve earned. Rather than pushing for a dramatic life overhaul, I offer a grounded reframe: treat discomfort as a signal, not a flaw, and start with small, honest moves that restore alignment. We look at practical shifts—renegotiating scope, protecting deep work, reclaiming white space, and inviting play—so you can feel like yourself again without blowing up your life. You’ll hear why delaying joy until retirement or “when the kids are finished with school” is so costly, and how chronic disconnection can show up in the body through stress, inflammation, and illness. Most importantly, we claim permission: you’re allowed to want more even when life is good. When you come home to yourself, the success you’ve built finally becomes something you can enjoy, not just endure. Calm and confidence sound like the goal, but we unpack how the chase often turns into control and self-criticism. We shift the focus to presence and inherent worthiness so we can respond to life with steadiness, even when it stays busy and unpredictable. • wanting calm as a way to control circumstances • “I should be calm” as a form of self-attack • choosing presence by stopping the moment from being “wrong” • noticing disempowering stories and dropping meaning-making • acknowledging emotions without spiralling into blame • redefining confidence as personal power and self-worthiness • separating self-worth from self-esteem and skill building • why fake-it confidence can look strong but feel shaky • deciding not to tolerate self-belittling and second-guessing • accepting a big, full life while staying grounded in choice If this resonated, share it with a friend who needs to hear it today. Sign up here to learn how in 45 minutes! https://balanceinstitute.thrivecart.com/switch-off/Ever felt like your brain refuses to shut down, even when your body is begging for sleep? We’ve been there—staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., rewriting yesterday’s meeting, pre-empting tomorrow’s fires, and spinning through 40,000 mental tabs. The usual fixes don’t stick because the real issue isn’t time management or a better to-do list. The real issue is weight: we’re carrying problems that aren’t ours.We walk through the quiet ways over-carrying creeps into our lives—absorbing a colleague’s stress, budgeting in our heads for someone else’s worry, pre-managing the imagined fallout from a boundary. Then we introduce a simple, powerful checkpoint: “Is this mine?” These three words separate empathy from over-responsibility and let us close mental loops without guilt. You’ll hear how to spot the 3 a.m. replay and end it, how to help without holding, and how to make stillness feel safe again so your nervous system can finally downshift.Along the way, we unpack the identity knots that make this hard for high-capacity women—the reliable one, the fixer, the safe pair of hands—and offer practical ways to return what isn’t yours while staying warm and supportive. We also share our Switch Off mini-course designed to help you recognise what’s yours, close the loops your brain keeps open, and put down what you never needed to carry in the first place. You Got the Promotion. So Why Are You Still Trying to Prove Something?
The promotion lands, the title shines, and yet the pressure spikes. If you’ve ever caught yourself working late “just to stay ahead,” redoing a capable team member’s draft, or softening firm requests with a quick “sorry,” you’re not alone. We’re naming the proving trap—the sneaky habits that get you to the next level and then keep you stuck there—and we’re laying out a practical path to step into leadership without constantly auditioning for your own job.We explore how proving mode shows up as overwork, overcontrol, and over-softening. From 10:30pm inbox refreshes to polishing formatting that was already fine, these behaviours feel safe because they keep your hands on the wheel. But the hidden costs are steep: you stay in the weeds, strategy slips, delegation collapses, and your team learns to wait for you to fix it. We break down why feedback like “be more strategic” often follows a promotion and how to swap busyness metrics for measures that actually prove leadership value. Then we get practical. You’ll hear a simple noticing protocol to catch proving in real time, a clean delegation contract that sets outcomes and guardrails without hovering, and a language upgrade that replaces soft apologies with clear, confident asks. Most importantly, we make the core shift explicit: stop treating your value like something you must re-earn each day. The promotion is proof. Your job now is to hold that value, lead through direction instead of constant doing, and build a team that ships good work without your midnight edits. If you’re ready to feel less frantic and more grounded—without lowering standards or faking confidence—this conversation is your reset. The Battle Between Control and Chaos That No One Wins
Balance & Beyond begins 9th March. Find out more here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/balance-and-beyondEver feel like control is the only thing keeping your life from tipping over, yet somehow it’s also what’s wearing you down? We pull back the curtain on the habits that look like competence on the surface—rescuing teammates, smoothing conflicts, over-explaining, and shaving off your edges to keep everyone comfortable—and reveal the hidden cost to your energy, identity and nervous system.Across a frank, compassionate conversation, we trace how control becomes a lifestyle: from micromanaging calendars and outcomes to carrying emotions and problems that aren’t ours. We explore why women are praised for over-responsibility and how that conditioning feeds anxiety, hyper-vigilance and burnout. You’ll hear a powerful boundary example from elite sport that reframes accountability, and a vulnerable story about self-validation that shows what changes when you stop outsourcing worth to approval, metrics and medals. Then we offer a workable alternative: internal anchoring. Rather than swinging from grip to chaos, we show how to build a steady centre you can return to when outcomes wobble. Expect practical shifts—regulating your body before you respond, cutting the rescuer cord without abandoning care, and becoming the source of the words you’ve been waiting to hear. As you anchor within, you reclaim your voice, stop playing small, and act from presence instead of panic. The question stops being how to control more and becomes whether you can stay steady inside change—and that’s where real power lives. If this conversation hits home, share it with a woman who needs it, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find the show. Why Smart Women Are Learning to Lead Beyond Their Head
Anchored launches 6th March. Find out more here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/anchoredEver felt your brilliant mind switch on while your voice shakes and your body pulls back? We go straight to the gap between what you know and what you can embody under pressure, unpacking why logic stalls when your nervous system doesn’t feel safe and how to rebuild confidence from the inside out. With somatic coach Jaclyn, we chart the limits of a head-led operating system and show how emotional and social safety drive presence, influence, and sustainable performance.Across this conversation, we map the difference between physical safety and the subtler realms of social threat that shape tone, timing, and truth-telling in the room. We dig into self-worth as the root of real confidence, explore how perfectionism and over-responsibility show up as somatic signatures, and outline simple practices that bring your system back online: orienting, breath, grounding, and naming sensation. You’ll hear why awareness and therapy insights often fail to shift behaviour and why nervous system change only sticks through felt experience, repetition, and co-regulation with other humans. We also introduce Anchored, our six-week live, embodied program designed for self-aware women who are done trying to outthink their patterns. If you’re ready to partner your sharp intellect with a regulated body, make faster aligned decisions, and speak with steadiness when it counts, this one’s for you. Expect practical tools, real-time practice, and a supportive group that helps you hold your centre while the stakes rise.Listen now, share it with a woman who needs the reminder that her body is an ally, and if the conversation sparks something, check the show notes for Anchored or book a call with our team to find your right next step. How to Stop Living on Fumes and Escape Depletion
BALANCE & BEYOND IS BACK FOR 2026 - JOIN THE 9TH MARCH INTAKE!Find out more here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/balance-and-beyondTake your first step and book your free discovery call here: https://www.balanceinstitute.com/book What if the real reason you’re exhausted isn’t time, but the stories that keep you sprinting? We shine a clear light on depletion—the bone-deep fatigue that a holiday can’t touch—and trace it back to three patterns we see in brilliant, high-achieving women: over-responsibility, perfectionism and people-pleasing. Together with Sabina, we unpack how these habits sneak in under the banner of competence and care, and why they quietly hijack your nervous system, your calendar and, ultimately, your sense of self.Across a grounded, practical conversation, we map the invisible trade-offs: picking up what wasn’t asked, delaying until it’s perfect, saying yes to protect harmony, and losing sight of your own needs. We talk about the bittersweet moment when success lands and feels numb, the fear of “Who am I if I’m not busy?”, and the seductive fantasy of blowing up your life for relief. Then we offer a different route—stacked micro-shifts you can start today and deeper inner work that changes how you choose, ask, and rest. Think: one boundary you can keep, direct asks at home and work, “good enough” standards that restore momentum, tiny rituals that let your system land and celebrate. We also explore why external fixes alone don’t stick without a shift in beliefs, and how community and coaching reveal blind spots you can’t see on your own. If your mornings start with a groan or your patience is threadbare, consider this your nudge: small, honest steps can move you from depleted and reactive to spacious and grounded without waiting for a perfect window. We’re opening new Balance Beyond cohorts to help unwind the patterns behind the pace and build a life that feels as good as it looks. If this conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a woman who needs it, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find us.
