189. A Systems View from a Personal TBI Experience with Wendy Lurrie
Wendy Lurrie is a former Chief Marketing Officer, growth and strategy executive, and the creator of Rupture: The World of BestGuessistan, a platform exploring what happens when systems fail—especially the human ones we rely on most. After a traumatic brain injury disrupted her ability to function in the ways she once could, Wendy began documenting the invisible, structural changes that follow rupture: shifts in cognition, perception, identity, and control. Her work draws from both lived experience and decades spent leading organizations, building brands, and navigating complex systems under pressure. She focuses on the gap between what looks normal from the outside and what no longer works underneath—particularly the failure of language, systems, and culture to accurately describe life after disruption. 174. Understanding TBI with Daniel Avesar, PhD
Dr. Daniel Avesar, PhD is a brain injury survivor and advocate dedicated to raising awareness and promoting understanding of brain injury. When he was 18 years old (10/11/1999), during the third week of his undergraduate studies, Daniel sustained a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) that required a craniotomy of the right side of his skull. That marked the beginning of a seven-year journey to rebuild cognition, regain his inner self, and address vision challenges, plus dealing with other problems like derealization and hyperacusis. Those experiences led him to study neuroscience, seeking to understand the profound changes he had undergone due to his TBI. Daniel earned a PhD in neurophysiology from Dartmouth College in 2013 and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oregon in 2017. Since then has been interviewing brain injury survivors as well as researchers and clinicians to create free online content aimed at dispelling misconceptions and increasing public understanding about brain injury both from the “internal” and “external” perspectives. Dr. Avesar has two projects online, the Experiencing My Brain podcast which includes one on one discussion with brain injured people about their invisible problems, and the Building Brain Awareness talk series on YouTube, presentations from clinicians, researchers and brain injury services on what they are studying and working on for brain injury.Find Daniel at: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574995580688YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@buildingbrainawarness2139LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-avesar-phd-54704730/Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/experiencing-my-brain/id1596998070, Find more about Brain Wellness at: https://brainwellnesssolutions.com/Support the show with Buy me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/brainwellnessnp

Jessie Rain Anne Smith is a Qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher, trained through the University of California San Diego's Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute. She has also completed Dr. David Treleaven’s Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness training, and was one of a select few chosen by Dr. Treleaven for mentorship in 2022. Following a car accident and brain injury in 2013, Jessie was advised by a concussion rehab center in Vancouver to take up mindfulness to help manage symptoms such as cognitive fatigue and nervous system dysregulation. Mindfulness was a huge help, but it was also a horrific hindrance. Some practices were too cognitive and others sent her into panic and dissociation. In time, Jessie learned to modify mindfulness to meet the unique needs of brain injury survivors. She went on to found Mindful Concussion, an initiative dedicated to sharing her lessons with others. Her Mindful Concussion course, additional educational offerings, and her forthcoming book,The Power and the Perils of Mindfulness for Brain Injury, provide practical strategies survivors and teachers alike can implement to modify mindfulness for brain injury.Find Jessie at: https://mindfulconcussion.ca/Email: [email protected]: https://facebook.com/mindfulconcusionLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessie-smith-527a48207/ Find more about Brain Wellness at: https://brainwellnesssolutions.com/Support the show with Buy me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/brainwellnessnp

169. From bobsledding to HBOT with William Person
William Person is a former nine-year Team USA Bobsled athlete whose career left him battling the devastating effects of CTE. At his lowest point, he could barely get up off the floor, lost in confusion, depression, intense headaches, and a deteriorating brain. Hope came when he discovered Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which restored clarity in his thinking, color to his vision, and purpose to his life. Today, William is on a mission to raise awareness of brain damage in sports, the military, and other lifetime collisions, and share the importance of protecting and healing the brain. He’s on a mission to open a nonprofit Post Concussion Recovery Center to help athletes, veterans, and civilians heal from brain injuries -- at no cost to them. To realize this mission, he’s opened a 501c3 charity and has launched a GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/93ff9c6e , which will help him raise funds to purchase a multi-person hyperbaric oxygen chamber and open a Post Concussion Recovery Center where anyone battling CTE and brain injury symptoms can get treated at no cost to them. By removing the burden of cost, William hopes to give quality of life back to as many people as possible, but he needs the public’s help to do it. 165. TBI community supports in Connecticut with Jamie Arbor
Jamie Arber, MA, LPC, CBIST, CCH Executive Director, The Supported Living Group. Jamie Arber is a clinician, executive, and systems strategist whose work sits at the intersection of trauma recovery, brain injury rehabilitation, and community integration. 150. Sleep medicine, psychiatry & the brain with Dr. Shane Creado
Dr. Shane Creado is a double board-certified sleep medicine doctor & psychiatrist. He practices functional sleep medicine, integrative psychiatry, & sports psychiatry. He completed a degree in physical therapy at the top of his class, completed an MD at the top of his class with a gold medal. He went on to psychiatry residency at the University of Wisconsin & was awarded the graduating resident award for academic achievement. He completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Sleep and the world-renowned Center for Consciousness. He saw that sleep was neglected or only addressed when a problem arose. When looking at the existing sleep landscape, he saw that most sleep ‘experts’ on TV or read about online are not sleep doctors. They are usually self-described sleep coaches, or at best, researchers or psychologists who are unaware of complicated health diagnoses, organ system interactions, have no training in medicine or underlying factors contributing to insomnia/sleep problems and are unable to prescribe/order tests & treatments. Those who are sleep doctors, are not trained in the gold-standard treatment of insomnia: CBT-insomnia or integrative, multi-level approaches to treating sleep & mental health disorders often only resorting to medications to only treat symptoms instead of root causes. It was this realization that drove him to write the book ‘Peak Sleep Performance for Athletes’, the cutting-edge sleep science that will guarantee a competitive advantage. It debuted #1 in Sports Medicine on Amazon. He is also a contributing author to 6 principal books in Sports Psychiatry. He has remained at the forefront of sports psychiatry for several years, co-authoring the paper 'First International Consensus on Sports Psychiatry' in 2024 and psychiatric treatment preferences of sports psychiatrists in 2024. He consults with individual athletes & provides sleep workshops to sports academies, sports organizations, sports teams. He provides ‘Sleep Retreats’ to organizations/companies, with education on sleep and performance, screening for sleep disorders, and specific strategies to improve sleep & workplace productivity. He has been on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP) for several years, currently the VP North America for the ISSP, Delegate for the USA for the International Summit on Advancing Sports Psychiatry, chair of the Sleep Performance Committee and Chairman of Innovation and Technology. He consults with the Amen Clinics and is the host of the Overcoming Insomnia course, available on Amen University, and has designed a best-selling personalized sleep supplement line for BrainMD. He also has consulted with the PGA tour Europe, the NBA Players association, the Australian Football League and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Chicago Blackhawks, the Rafa Nadal Academy. He is the sleep consultant for the Sun Belt Conference (16 university athletic programs under the NCAA), is the sleep consultant for BrainTap, is on the advisory board for Mens Fitness and many more. He has been endorsed/mentioned by/consulted with a host of elite clients/colleagues such as Dr Daniel Amen, Team Body Works UK (triathlete academy), Team USA’s Dr. Todd Stull, Team Canada’s Dr. Carla Edwards, Team Australia’s Dr. Ranjit Menon, Mike Bryan, Jim Kwik, Erik Spoelstra (head coach Miami Heat), Hannah Brown, Hulda Quebe, Nick Hardwick, Washington University mens basketball, Danni Wyatt, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Kerr, Stephen Cloobeck, several current Olympic athletes, many elite current/ retired athletes, the Enhanced Games, the Harvard Football Players Wellness Study and several other CEOs, founders and business leaders.Find Dr. Creado at: www.shanecreado.comEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/peaksleepperformance/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peaksleepperformance/Find more about Brain Wellness: https://brainwellnesssolutions.com/
