Building Consensus

From controversy to consensus, this podcast addresses fundamental building issues as well as building science nuance through discussions with industry experts. With each episode we seek to arrive at a common understanding, despite our dissimilar approaches or opposing views that reflect our unique experiences. It’s a pursuit of that mythical beast “best practice” through some good natured ribbing and spirited debate. Hopefully, we’ll be reaching common ground regardless of the different paths we tread.”

    Does Brandon's Perm Matter?

Brandon enjoys upsetting Travis enough that he's once again brought up vapor. Lemme Finish

Travis Brungardt uses a candid shop-floor conversation to unpack one of construction’s toughest challenges: knowing when a project is truly finished. He discusses how builders often keep refining details long after schedules say the job should be done, chasing higher standards in trim, finishes, and overall presentation. The episode explores the tension between craftsmanship, timelines, budgets, and client expectations, especially when aesthetic standards are hard to define. Brungardt also talks through mockups, sample approvals, and clearer benchmarks as ways to reduce rework and liability. The broader theme centers on balancing perfectionism with practical project management in custom home building. Who Plays Nice In The Sandbox?

From time to time we have to schedule multiple trades in on top of each other to meet schedule. This can work, but only if all the players are organized and willing. The sandbox can be peaceful and productive if we can be nice or at least respectful, and if we all share the common goal. Out of Budget Sure, But Never Out of Options

What do we do when our clients don't track their spending, can't stay on budget (or won't)? Is there a reasonable responsibility we face that all parties agree to? From Private to General - Part 1 with Wolfgang Clapper

On the Building Consensus Podcast, Travis Brungardt and Brandon Jones open with a nod to longtime sponsor Huber Engineered Woods, reflecting on field experience with products like ZIP System sheathing and AdvanTech subflooring, and why performance and durability matter on real job sites. They’re joined by framer Wolfgang Clapper to discuss the transition from trade contractor to general contractor. The conversation covers contractor licensing, pulling permits, and navigating municipal requirements, along with structuring proposals, defining scope of work, and choosing between cost-plus and lump-sum contracts. Stick Frame versus Truss

Comparing the cost, speed and quality of framing with traditional dimensional lumber against the potential labor and schedule advantages of engineered trusses leaves the fellas far from consensus. Airing of Grievances

While we typically try to attack a problem from our two unique perspectives and offer some useful information on this podcast we continue to be human and therefore prone to moments of selfishness. Brandon and Travis take a moment to share their frustrations from the field as they close out projects and share a bit of “what not to do”.Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. Reno or Demo?

What are the criteria that determine wether a house has “great bones” and should be renovated? Conversely, how can you guide a client to see the misalignment of their expectations of that renovation and the realities of the smaller footprint and 8’ ceilings? Here we unpack what existing conditions and client expectations dictate a scrape versus a remodel.Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. Slow Children At Play

In a world that’s faster than we are, how can we slow that down” was the question Brandon asked, so the fellas tried to answer with strategies to manage time better, limit redundancy and make things feel less urgent. Trying to slow the world, or at least slow down the madness on our projects, might be impossible but we can still try.Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. Who’s Creepin?

It’s common for the scope of work to change during a project and for those changes to result in additional cost and extended duration. Somehow the contractor is always saddled with the blame for projects going beyond their initial schedule and budget and “nobody” remembers how we got there when it’s all over. As such we had to unpack what it is who’s really responsible for Scope Creep. Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. Right Now Mentality

Time and again we see problems that start smaller grow into disasters due to people avoiding the difficult thing. Sometimes it’s informing clients of an overage they weren’t expecting the moment you discover it, or getting the water and sewer connected early in job even though it means disrupting the neighbors spring plantings. The best time is almost always right now.Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. The Paradox of Help

The problem with needing help is that in order to get it you have to take time to interview, hire and train the helper - and that takes a lot of time. The reason we typically need help is that we don’t have enough time to give proper attention to all things we need to do, so in order to get some help with not having enough time we simply need to invest more time. Thus the paradox. Find Travis & Brandon on the WebTravis’ Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/travisbrungardtTravis’ Instagram: @catalystbuiltTravis’ Website: https://www.catalystbuilt.com/Brandon’s Instagram: @bbuildsit Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. Do You Let Your Clients Dictate Trades?

If you've ever had a client ask you to use their brother, sister, in-law, friend or whoever they have in the trades this one’s for you. If you allow it you’ve ceded control of the outcome on your project to the unfamiliar. If you say No you can never satisfy the client with the trade partner they never wanted you to use instead of their preferred choice.
