Integrative oncology: Tending the inner self—a writing workshop
Hosted in partnership with Project Life “Tending the inner self” is a quiet, supportive writing workshop for those living with metastatic breast cancer. Together, we’ll use simple writing prompts to explore inner landscapes—thoughts, emotions, memories, and moments of meaning. This is not about writing “well,” but about listening inward, honoring your experience, and giving voice to what wants to be expressed. All are welcome, exactly as they are. Nikoo Kafi McGoldrick is a metastatic lobular breast cancer (ILC) thriver, advocate, and author dedicated to advancing research, expanding patient education, and supporting individuals living with metastatic breast cancer. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and experienced a metastatic recurrence in 2022, an experience that has deepened her commitment to patient-centered advocacy and equitable care for those living with metastatic disease. Abigail M. Johnston, JD, was living her life, running her business, and tandem breastfeeding her sons when she found a lump in her left breast. After a whirlwind of appointments, tests, and surgeries, as well as a misdiagnosis, Abigail was diagnosed with de novo stage IV metastatic breast cancer (MBC) at the age of 38. Talking together: Strengthening communication between people living with MBC and their loved ones
This interactive session is designed to help everyone involved communicate more openly, honestly, and effectively — together. People living with metastatic breast cancer and their caregivers often struggle with the same challenges: wanting to protect each other from worry, not knowing how to bring up difficult topics, and trying to balance hope with realistic expectations. This session explores what gets in the way of good communication, from fear and uncertainty to role changes and emotional overload. About the speaker Celeste Vaughan-Briggs, LCSW, has more than 25 years of social work experience and now serves as manager of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program at Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia. The program serves several hundred women with diverse backgrounds each year from across the greater Philadelphia area. Ms. Vaughan-Briggs provides vital navigation and psychosocial support to these women and men throughout their course of treatment. This session will outline key insurance options, how to evaluate health care costs, and what to consider when comparing plans. We will review plan changes involving employer-sponsored coverage, COBRA, the Health Insurance Marketplace, and Medicaid, along with pathways to disability insurance and Medicare. Attendees will gain practical tools for choosing and using their coverage in ways that support their care and financial well-being. About the speaker Amanda Goodstadt, JD, is the senior staff attorney at Triage Cancer, where she develops educational materials, leads trainings, and provides individualized support through the organization’s Legal & Financial Navigation Program. From information to empowerment: Understanding pathology reports and scans in MBC
Hosted in partnership with Project Life Information can be overwhelming—but when you know how to use it, it becomes the power to make choices with confidence. In this session, you will learn directly from people living with MBC whose professional backgrounds shape how they engage with their medical care. The session is interactive, featuring the basis and application of cancer biomarkers, pathology reports and scan results. Each participant will receive a practical handout to collect/record information and thoughtfully frame questions for healthcare providers—your care, on your terms, in your own way. About the speakers Abigail M. Johnston, JD, was living her life, running her business, and tandem breastfeeding her sons when she found a lump in her left breast. After a whirlwind of appointments, tests, and surgeries, as well as a misdiagnosis, Abigail was diagnosed with de novo stage IV metastatic breast cancer (MBC) at the age of 38. Amy Beumer was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer in 2017 at the age of 38 and with metastatic breast cancer in 2020. She is honored to work with Project Life as science and education coordinator and participate as an active member of the Patient-Centered Dosing Initiative and the Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance. Amy Russell-Parliman, MHA, serves as a director of diagnostic imaging for a health system in upstate New York. After being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2014, Amy faced a metastatic lobular invasive carcinoma diagnosis in 2019. Since then, her advocacy efforts have included previously serving as the social media coordinator, now she serves as the events coordinator for Project Life, and completing Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Hear My Voice program in 2022. Cooke is a breast cancer advocate, entrepreneur, and creative professional whose work centers on healing, storytelling, and community. Through her advocacy and creative platforms, she supports people navigating cancer with a focus on emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. Kelly Shanahan, MD, is a physician and woman living with metastatic breast cancer. Before her diagnosis, she maintained a busy and successful OB-GYN practice while raising her young daughter and traveling frequently with her family. She was diagnosed with stage IIB breast cancer in 2008 and with metastatic disease in 2013 at age 53. Roxana Guerra is a breast cancer advocate and single mother who has been living with metastatic breast cancer for nearly 10 years. She was initially diagnosed with stage IIIC breast cancer in 2015 at age 41 and was later restaged to stage IV in November 2016. She is currently living with no evidence of disease. She shares the full spectrum of breast cancer — holding space for hard days alongside hopeful ones — to empower others with metastatic disease and help build more welcoming, inclusive communities. LaFreda “Freda” Chrispen is a metastatic breast cancer advocate and digital creator who blends honesty, humor, and heart to support others navigating this disease. Freda was diagnosed in 2023 with ER-positive, PR-positive, HER2-negative invasive ductal carcinoma, later found to have spread to her spine. She has undergone chemotherapy, multiple rounds of radiation, and ongoing targeted and endocrine therapies. Marialuisa “Alycia” Villasana is a metastatic breast cancer advocate who has been living with stage IV disease for more than six years. Breast cancer has been part of her life since her initial diagnosis with early-stage breast cancer in 2003. Her lived experiences have given her a perspective on authenticity, resilience, and connection as a mom, spouse, daughter, friend, and human. Melanie Ottersen is a 2024 Hear My Voice advocate who was diagnosed with de novo triple negative metastatic breast cancer in July 2018. She has been no evidence of disease (NED) since August 2022 and has been an active member of Living Beyond Breast Cancer for several years. He serves as the director of translational research for the Breast Oncology Program, where he leads a multidisciplinary team focused on understanding how cancers develop resistance to standard therapies and on advancing novel, personalized treatment approaches. Dr. Elena Michaels is a hematology/oncology fellow in the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute combined fellowship program in Boston, Mass. To fulfill our mission of providing trusted information and a community of support, we offer on-demand emotional, practical, and evidence-based content that is meaningful to those newly diagnosed, in treatment, post-treatment, and living with metastatic disease.In Can and Did Conversations, young women diagnosed with breast cancer share their stories about the impact of breast cancer and what they did to steer a path forward in this limited podcast series. Topics that matter, such as navigating mental health conditions, career and workplace decisions, complementary therapies, and fertility issues are discussed.
