How I Finally Rewired My Brain For Sobriety (After Years Of Failing) | ADHD and Alcohol recovery
What if failing at sobriety wasn't about weakness - it was about never understanding how your brain actually works? For years, I told myself I just didn't have enough willpower. That I was the problem. But the more I dug into ADHD and addiction, the more I realised something nobody had ever told me: my brain wasn't broken. It was doing exactly what it was designed to do — seeking relief from the chaos, the overwhelm, the noise that never stops. Alcohol was never the real problem. It was the solution my brain found first. In this episode of the Cappy Hour Podcast, I sit down with Tracey Goodwin - who has helped many ADHD minds find their way back to themselves. We talk about perfectionism, ADHD & Alcohol addiction, and why doing the deep inner work isn't just helpful -it's non-negotiable if you want long-term recovery. I'll be honest with you - I spent years failing at sobriety before I understood any of this. I'd wake up every morning planning to stop, and by the evening that voice in my head had already talked me out of it. I didn't need more willpower. I needed to understand what was actually happening inside my brain. If you've ever used alcohol to focus, to calm down, to get through a social situation, to silence the racing thoughts- you're not weak. For an ADHD brain, that was a completely logical response. The question is, what do you replace it with? That's what Tracey and I are here to talk about. In This Episode: * Why ADHD brains self-medicate with alcohol and how to break the cycle * The "Wonder Twins" theory: sobriety + ADHD = a unique superpower * How perfectionism fuels procrastination and relapse * The role of childhood trauma in addiction * Cold showers, dopamine hacks, and morning routines that actually work for ADHD * Why isolation leads to relapse and what community truly does for your brain * The whisper before the craving: how to catch it before your midbrain takes over * Accountability partners and the power of processing out loud Tracy also shares details about her free virtual event Make ADHD Your Genius —definitely worth checking out, link below. 👇 HAVE YOU EVER SELF-MEDICATED YOUR ADHD WITHOUT EVEN REALISING IT? Gray Area Drinking, Sobriety & Alcohol Free Life
Does Your Drinking "Not Look Like a Problem" to Anyone Else But You Know It Is? Maybe you never lost your job. Never got a DUI. Never hit rock bottom. But you think about drinking more than you should. You start over every Monday. And deep down you know something needs to change. That is gray area drinking, and it is more common than you think. In this episode of The Sober Cappy Podcast, I sit down with Erica Wiechnik — a mom of two and alcohol-free mindset coach with over three years of sobriety. From the outside, Erica had it all together. Morning workouts, healthy meals, a growing family. But every night she was reaching for a drink she did not really want. And every morning she was waking up anxious, ashamed and telling herself today would be different. That's her story, and it might be yours too. What's covered: • What a gray area drinker actually is and how it's different from alcoholism • Why quitting alcohol is never just about willpower • How to handle a sip after long term sobriety • How alcohol quietly destroys your sleep and mental health • How life actually feels after you quit • Why community, coaching and doing the work matters more than just willpower • Why moderation is harder than quitting If you have ever felt like you were suffering on the inside while everything looked fine on the outside, this episode is made for you. How To Actually Be Productive With ADHD? (Part 2)
Part 2 with Karla is here and this one goes deep. We pick up right where we left off and this time we're getting into the real day to day stuff. What it actually looks like to live with ADHD in recovery every single day? How do you build routines your brain will actually stick to and why are so many people still struggling even after they put the bottle down? This episode gets honest. It gets a little messy. And honestly that's kind of the point because that's exactly what living with ADHD feels like. If Part 1 was the wake up call, Part 2 is the game plan. What We Cover: Why ADHD and addiction are more connected than most people realize How alcohol damages dopamine and why sobriety alone doesn't fix the brain Why ADHD meds can be abused the same way alcohol is The calendar system that actually works for ADHD brains Time blindness, task paralysis, and how to finally work around them Cold showers, sunlight, and exercise as natural dopamine hits Morning routines, meal prep, and the small daily habits that add up Why accountability partners change everything and the stats to prove it How ADHD impacts relationships and communication more than people expect Plus a mention of the books ADHD Women In Relationships and ADHD Men In Relationships by Ivy Castillo If you've ever felt scattered, unproductive, or like your brain just won't cooperate no matter what you do... this one is for you. Can You Manage ADHD Without Medication?
Ever wondered why so many people with ADHD end up drinking too much? Or why getting sober does not automatically fix your focus and productivity? This episode gets into all of it. In this episode, I sit down with Carla, an ADHD accountability partner based in Australia, for a raw and honest conversation about what it actually feels like to live with ADHD. We get into the real connection between ADHD and alcohol, why so many people with undiagnosed ADHD end up self medicating, and what dopamine actually has to do with all of it. We also dig into ADHD medication. What works, what does not, the difference between extended release and regular meds, why seeing a psychiatrist matters more than most people think and whether you can actually manage ADHD without medication if you put the right systems in place. What Do ADHD & Alcoholism Have in Common? More Than You Think
What if the reason you couldn't stop drinking had less to do with willpower and everything to do with your brain? For years, we thought we were just lazy, unreliable or broken. Turns out, we both had ADHD. And we were both drinking to cope with it without even knowing it. That's exactly what me and Jake Lohwater unpack in Part 2 of our ongoing conversation about ADHD, addiction and what it actually takes to build a life in recovery. Honestly, things get even more real in this one. In this episode, we cover : ADHD medications (stimulants vs. non-stimulants) and why Adderall can be dangerous for people in recovery The real link between ADHD and addiction / alcoholism Non-stimulant ADHD medication experiences (like Strattera) "Time blindness" and why being late isn't always about laziness How ADHD silently affects relationships, focus, and daily life The concept of divergent thinking (and why it can be a superpower) Social media addiction, dopamine, and productivity struggles If you've ever felt like your brain won't slow down, struggled to stay on time, forgotten something important seconds after thinking of it, or wondered why "just try harder" never worked - this one's for you. Infidelity Isn’t the Whole Story: Compassion, Boundaries & Recovery
Infidelity Isn’t the Whole Story: Compassion, Boundaries & Recovery In this episode, I’m joined by Erin Schaden (divorce attorney + writer behind “Naked Random Thoughts”) for a deep, honest conversation about cheating, shame, and what healing actually requires. We unpack why public shaming spreads so fast, how people get turned into “villains” online, and what “doing the work” in recovery looks like in real life—inventory, humility, accountability, and rebuilding trust. Important: portions of this discussion reference a public story and include commentary—details may be incomplete. The point isn’t the drama; it’s the bigger lesson: how modern relationships break, how boundaries get ignored, and what it takes to recover with integrity. What we cover: - Why infidelity isn’t the whole story (and what usually sits underneath it) - Compassion vs. judgment (and why nuance matters) - Consent, power dynamics, and workplace boundaries - Emotional maturity and not outsourcing your self-worth - Recovery tools: inventory, humility, accountability, and guardrails If this helped you, please like, subscribe, and share — it supports the show more than you think. You Can’t Out-Will Addiction: The Lie That Keeps People Stuck
You can’t “out-will” addiction — and believing you can is one of the biggest lies that keeps people stuck. In this episode, I sit down with Jenny to break down why willpower alone isn’t a recovery plan. We talk about the difference between a habit you can “just stop” and an addiction disorder that hijacks your brain — and why the real “willpower move” is committing to the work (community, tools, structure, and daily practices) that actually changes outcomes. Jenny shares what it felt like to lose the starring role in her own life — becoming a “supporting character” with a script she didn’t choose — and how recovery helped her take that power back. We also get into how cravings can feel like an out-of-body experience, why shame fuels the cycle, and how consistent recovery work strengthens the part of the brain responsible for judgment, impulse control, and long-term decision-making. In this conversation, we cover: - Why “just try harder” doesn’t work with addiction - Willpower vs. a repeatable recovery system - The lies alcohol/addiction tells (and how to spot them) - Community + support (AA, TLC-style groups, and more) - Identity, self-trust, and rebuilding a life you actually want If you’ve been stuck in the loop of “I’ll quit tomorrow” — this is the episode to hear. Stop Sleeping with Your Toxic Ex: A Radical Guide to Sobriety
If you’re trying to quit drinking (or you’re sober-curious), this conversation is a practical, honest look at staying sober while dating, socializing, and navigating cravings. In this episode, Koki and I talk about how alcohol (and even relationships) can become a “savior” — something we subconsciously expect to fix our emotions, confidence, or loneliness. We unpack what it looks like to take your power back, build self-fulfillment, and create systems that actually support long-term sobriety. What you’ll learn in this episode - Why “the drink will save me” is a pattern—and how it shows up in dating and life - The “savior complex” vs. radical self-love (and how to stop outsourcing your happiness) - Sober dating: staying confident, present, and intentional without alcohol - Building a relapse prevention plan for events, nights out, and social routines - Decoupling activities from drinking (karaoke, pickleball, travel temptations, and more) - “Pink cloud” energy vs. sustainable emotional sobriety - Habits that help (coffee awareness, cold showers/cold plunge alternatives, nervous system resets) - Why community matters and how to stay consistent when motivation dips Like, subscribe, and share with someone who needs this today. I Was Dating an Abusive Boyfriend for 35 Years (And He Was a Liquid)
One job. Alcohol’s one job was to “help” me avoid discomfort — and it kept me trapped like an abusive boyfriend for 35 years. In this Cappy Hour Podcast episode, we unpack the real relationship with alcohol addiction, social anxiety, triggers, cravings, and what sobriety looks like when you stop running from the feeling. From airport “gymnastics” (planning drinks like it’s automatic), to dating anxiety, to karaoke without a drink, we talk about embracing discomfort and rebuilding self-trust one decision at a time — plus the neuroscience of cravings (why the prefrontal cortex can feel like it shuts down) and how to practice healthier coping mechanisms instead of the old default. If you’ve ever used alcohol to feel “more confident,” “more social,” or “more comfortable,” this one will hit. In this episode, you’ll hear about: - Why alcohol feels like the “easy option” in uncomfortable moments - Social anxiety, awkwardness, and the fear of being judged - Triggers in everyday places (bars, airports, celebrations) - The mental loop that creates “permission” to drink - The sobriety paradox: avoiding discomfort makes you weaker - “Embrace the cringe” and stop living in a self-made prison Choosing self-love through consistency and recovery If you’re building your sober life: drop a comment with what situation you’re facing right now — dating, social events, travel, karaoke, job interviews, anything. - Like, subscribe, and share with someone who needs this today. - If you’re listening on Spotify/Apple Podcasts, a quick rating helps a lot. I Quit Drinking Without Hitting Rock Bottom — Here’s What No One Warns You About
I Quit Drinking Without Hitting Rock Bottom — Here’s What No One Warns You About. If you’re trying to quit drinking (without a dramatic “rock bottom”), this episode breaks down the real surprises of sobriety—especially what happens after the “pink cloud” fades. In this conversation, we talk honestly about quitting alcohol without a catastrophic crash, why Year 2 can feel harder than Year 1, and how triggers can show up out of nowhere—even when you feel “stable.” We also get into the sneaky replacement habits (like coffee as a crutch), and the practical tools that actually help when cravings hit. In this episode, we cover: - Why you don’t need to “hit rock bottom” to quit drinking - The Year 1 vs Year 2 sobriety shift (gratitude, mindset, and mental health) - Triggers in everyday life: liquor stores, old routines, travel/hotel rooms, and “surprise alcohol” - The “voice” of relapse (and how it tries to rewrite the story) - Community + accountability (and why doing it alone can backfire later) - Coffee, dopamine, and replacing one coping tool with another - Cold plunges / cold showers as a daily hard thing that builds momentum - How sobriety becomes less “front and center” over time—and why that’s a good sign If this helped you: 👍 Like, subscribe, and share this with someone who’s trying to quit drinking. ⭐ Leave a review on Spotify / Apple Podcasts — it helps more people find the show. I Was Terrified Sobriety Would Be Boring — I Was Completely Wrong
I was terrified sobriety would be boring… and I was completely wrong. In this episode, we talk about why getting sober didn’t shrink life—it expanded it. The peace, the presence, the confidence, and yes… the fun is real. We get into the mindset shift from chasing the next drink to actually enjoying the moment, how “fun” changes when you’re sober (including the hit-the-pillow-at-night kind of fun), and why alcohol only “works” for a short window before it starts taking more than it gives. We also share real talk on the progressive nature of drinking, the “liquid lunch” days, the trap of finishing every drink, why one sip is rarely just one, and how community + accountability can keep you moving forward. If you’re building your sober life right now, you’re not alone—drop a comment with the most surprising thing you’ve enjoyed since quitting alcohol. 🔔 Subscribe for weekly conversations on sobriety, mindset, ADHD/anxiety, and sustainable change. 🎧 Prefer audio? Ep 9 With Koki In this episode, we sit down for a raw, funny, and deeply honest conversation about breaking up with alcohol, navigating the “messy middle” of sobriety, and learning to love the big, loud, authentic version of yourself you used to try to numb. You’ll hear stories of rock bottoms that didn’t look like rock bottom from the outside — running a pizza shop with a liquor store next door, getting put in protective custody, concussions, family interventions, and those “just tonight, I deserve it” moments that quietly restart the spiral. We talk about how community becomes a lifeline, and why vulnerability in those rooms feels like showing up naked in public… but is exactly what sets you free. Together we explore: - Seeing alcohol as a toxic relationship you’re finally ready to leave - The “voice” that whispers just one won’t hurt — and how to stop giving it your power - Big sober energy: what to do with all that personality and intensity once you stop drinking - Reclaiming people, places, and memories in sobriety - Why community, sharing, and service are non-negotiable for long-term recovery - The difference between “I know” and actually living a new way of life - How self-love, boundaries, and tiny one-second decisions stack up into a completely different future If you’re sober-curious, early in your journey, or coming back after a slip, this conversation is for you — especially if you’re stuck in the middle, not at rock bottom but nowhere near okay. There’s no preaching here, just real stories, real laughter, and a reminder that you’re not broken… you’re just breaking out of an old life. The Ultimate Hack to Winning Life: Sobriety as a Competitive Advantage
Sobriety isn’t just about not drinking — it’s about emotional sobriety, real addiction recovery, and building a life you’re actually excited to wake up to. In this episode we go deep into how to stay alcohol-free long term, deal with cravings, and create “Big Sober Energy” in your daily life. We talk about the voice that tries to pull you back to alcohol, the neuroscience of dopamine and glutamate, why relapse can sometimes become part of your recovery story, and how to use tools like cold plunges, coffee, community and coaching to get through the hardest moments. You’ll also hear hard-hitting stats on how alcohol fuels crime, crashes and broken families — and why choosing sobriety is choosing life, clarity and freedom. In this conversation we cover: - How to build emotional sobriety so you’re not white-knuckling every day - Why cravings hit (and how dopamine, glutamate and your nervous system are involved) - Using the HALT tool (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) before you pick up a drink - Why you must replace, not just remove, alcohol: cold plunge, coffee, workouts, hobbies - Community, coaching and why you shouldn’t try to recover alone - Grieving the old “drinking life” so you can fully step into your new sober identity - Sleep, doing hard things and “earning your dopamine” instead of chasing quick highs - “Big Sober Energy”: rebuilding confidence, joy and real connection without alcohol - How consistency in sobriety rebuilds trust with family, friends and (most importantly) yourself Who this episode is for If you’re: - Sober-curious or in early recovery - Coming back after a relapse and trying again - Sick of hangovers, anxiety and broken promises - Ready to join a real sobriety & addiction recovery community… …this conversation will remind you that you’re not broken, you’re not alone, and your best sober days are still ahead of you. Why Willpower Fails and Systems Succeed for overcoming Addiction & ADHD. #5
Today's guest is Ali Alqaraghuli, a NASA postdoctoral fellow who built 4 Steps to Hyperfocus — a simple, plug-and-play system designed for ADHD brains. Undiagnosed ADHD can increase substance abuse risk by up to 400% - - we expose why relying on willpower is a failed strategy for both disorders. Learn to ditch discipline and build powerful, external systems—your "external brain" to finally conquer time blindness, manage chronic misestimation, and regulate the dopamine deficits that sabotage your focus and sobriety. This is an engineer's practical blueprint for long-term executive function success. Bonus: rethinking the name as 'Executive Dysfunction & Dopamine Dysregulation Disorder'. If you see yourself in this mix of ADHD, time blindness, and relying on willpower, you’re in the right place. Drop a takeaway you’re going to try, and send this to someone who needs a more compassionate, system-based way to stay sober. 👥 Join the waitlist: LEPT — Learn, Experiment, Perform, Thrive (my new community for connection, accountability, and real-world tools). 🔔 Subscribe for weekly conversations on sobriety, mindset, ADHD/anxiety, and sustainable change. 🎧 Prefer audio? Boundless Recovery: Unlocking the Freedom to Crush Our Potential
In this episode, we dig into one of the most debated topics in recovery: the word “alcoholic.” Why does the label feel heavy and shame-based for so many of us, even when we’re openly working on sobriety? And is there a way to reclaim it without reinforcing stigma? We talk about: - The difference between addiction vs. alcohol use disorder - Why some people can moderate—and why others simply can’t - The neuroscience behind the “voice” that tries to pull us back to drinking - How communities like Reframe, The Luckiest Club, and others help us stay connected - The reality of relapse, and why the first drink is rarely a “choice” - Rebuilding identity, joy, confidence, and freedom in sobriety This conversation is raw, honest, and deeply human. It’s about understanding ourselves, releasing shame, and learning how to create a life that feels full, fun, and real—without alcohol. If you're sober, sober-curious, questioning your relationship with drinking, or simply trying to understand someone you love — this episode is for you. Reframing Sobriety: How joining a recovery community got us motivated to reclaim our lives. With Tommy Stewart
Transforming relapse into momentum, building community, and learning to let go of perfectionism. In this first guest episode, Tom joins me to talk candidly about sobriety, slipping on a golf weekend, owning it publicly, and getting right back on the horse. We compare AA vs. online recovery communities (The Luckiest Club, Reframe), talk about meeting cadence and fit, and unpack the “voice” that tries to drag us back to drinking. I also share a personal check-in: Halloween marks three years since my intervention and 19.5 months sober today—proof that it really “takes what it takes.” What we cover: - Relapse, restarts, and why honesty keeps you sober long-term - AA meetings vs. online communities (pros, cons, and finding your people) - Surrender vs. “moderation” and the illusion of control - Anxiety, the nervous system, and why alcohol makes it worse over time - Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and healthy boundaries in recovery - Coffee/caffeine as a crutch in early sobriety - Share etiquette: speak in “I” statements, stay on topic, 3-minute timers - Rage, misdirected criticism, and choosing to walk away - Practical tools that actually help day to day If you’re sober-curious, early in recovery, or rebuilding after a slip, you’re not alone. Drop a comment with what’s working for you, and share this with someone who needs it. The Day Everything Changed: My Journey from Rock Bottom to Freedom (Part 2)
Welcome back to Part 2 of my intro to Cappy Hour. When I filmed these first episodes, I had ~10 months sober; as we launch, I’m now at 19 months and counting. In this chapter I fill in the nine-month gap, talk about how my face (and life) changed as the alcohol-induced rosacea faded, and share what actually worked: community, honest sharing, therapy for the past, coaching for the future, and daily “acceptance speeches” to keep my streak alive. I also open up about ADHD—why it’s so often misunderstood, how it fed my drinking, and why I want to be a bridge between experts and real life. There’s relapse truth, eliminating triggers (including leaving my pizza shop), and hard lessons from losing a friend in the sober community. I’m launching LEPT, my new community, and doubling down on making recovery real, relatable, and hopeful. What you’ll hear: - The moment I finally declared a real “Day Two” and how I kept it going - Why honest sharing in a sober community accelerates recovery - ADHD, emotional dysregulation, and self-medicating with alcohol - Replacing artificial dopamine with the real stuff (movement, cold finishes, gratitude, service) - How I handle triggers, perfectionism, and people-pleasing—sober - A candid look at relapse, loss, and recommitting to life If you’re new, start with Part 1—and find all links in the show notes. The Day Everything Changed: My Journey from Rock Bottom to Freedom (Part 1)
I’m Brian “Cappy” Capello, and this is Part 1 of my story. I talk about how an Irish-Italian family tree, late-blooming confidence, and using alcohol as a “social tool” turned into three decades of trouble. From college nights at Providence and my first DUI scare, to a short marriage I tried to prop up with drinks, a disastrous funeral eulogy, and getting put in “protective custody” after a One Direction concert—this is the unfiltered timeline that shaped me. I also share the three-and-a-half sober years that ended with a 2018 relapse, the six-year slide that followed, and the rock-bottom morning when my family knocked and I finally said “enough.” Today I’m two-plus years sober, building Sober Cappy and launching The Real Cappy Hour to make recovery real, relatable, and hopeful. What you’ll hear in Part 1: Why I frame my addiction as largely genetic—not a moral failure How “Irish exits” became my default and what that cost me Dating, pre-drinking, and trying to outsource intimacy to alcohol The 2007 funeral fiasco and the 2014 wake-up call Quitting cold turkey, relapsing in 2018, and a six-year descent The intervention, the online community that changed everything, and what’s working now If this resonates, subscribe and stick around for Part 2—where I break down the tools that finally worked for me and what’s next for The Real Cappy Hour.
