    Leaders of Tomorrow: Steven Fletcher

Season 4, Episode 6Leaders of Tomorrow: Steven FletcherIn this episode of Season Four’s focus on Leaders of Tomorrow, Host Melanie Taddeo welcomes a man who embodies leadership in public service, the Honourable Steven Fletcher.Steven Fletcher is a former Parliamentarian, having served as a Member of Parliament for the riding of Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia in Winnipeg from 2004 to 2015. He later served one term as a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. Having sat as an opposition member as well as a member of the national Cabinet under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Steven Fletcher knows a thing or two about embracing a cause and promoting it -- despite the odds.He became a complete quadriplegic in 1996, well prior to his run for public office. after hitting a moose with his vehicle While travelling to a geological engineering job in northern Manitoba, his vehicle hit a moose, an accident that ultimately introduced him to a new life in which he would be completely paralysed below the neck.On the topic of promoting a cause, Steven explains, “the best kind of advocacy is to participate – and be seen.” He also points out that leadership is something that can be about the small, personal steps, such as, in his case, re-learning how to breathe. Whatever the challenge or the cause, Steven leads by doing, by working methodically towards positive and permanent systemic change – which, as you’ll discover this episode of Connect4Life: The Podcast, keeps Steven Fletcher as busy as ever. Despite a full career in elected public service, Steven Fletcher is both a leader of tomorrow and someone who inspires new generations of future leaders.Learn more about the past and current work of Steven Fletcher at:https://stevenfletcher.com/https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en/25502https://stevenjohnfletcher.substack.com/For more information about Connect4life visit www.connect4life.ca.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #accessibilitycanada #connect4life #aoda #unitednations #crpd #leadership #melanietaddeo #connectelife #podcasts #podcast #disabilitycanada #stevenfletcher

A Melanie Minute: Funding is about Delivering Value

Season 4, Episode 3A Melanie Minute: Funding is about Delivering ValueFunding anything today can be challenging. But funding charitable and non-profit causes … well, that’s something else entirely. People generally applaud the work of charities, but seldom appreciate how a charitable organization pays its bills – bills as simple as keeping the lights on or the costs associated with organizing a local event. The reality is that charities and non-profits are some of today’s most resourceful and innovative organizations in terms of creating meaningful ways for people, companies and governments to invest in their work. This Melanie Minute explains some of the newer options for non-profit funding, and talks about the importance for every non-profit organization to always make that connection between funding and delivering value.A Melanie Minute is an exclusive feature of Connect4Life: The Podcast, brought to you by host Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO.For more information about Connect4life visit www.connect4life.ca.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #accessibilitycanada #connect4life #aoda #unitednations #crpd #melanietaddeo #podcasts #podcast #disabilitycanada #charitablefunding #donors #melanieminute

A Melanie Minute: Disability Accommodations Are About Achieving Success

Season 4, Episode 2A Melanie Minute: Disability Accommodations are about Achieving SuccessWhat do we do when we hire a new employee or hire a contractor to carry out some work for us? Among other things, we usually want to ensure that the person has the right tools to do the job. In the world of disability some of these tools are called accommodations – steps that help provide the tools that bolster your team, make a positive contribution to your goals and objectives, helping you and your team get past the goal line, and ultimately to achieve success. As host Melanie Taddeo explains in this Melanie Minute, the word accommodations can sometimes be confusing to people, sounding like a hotel room we might book on our trips. But here, accommodations refers to the steps and measures we take to include people, to more fully mobilize everyone’s contributions. Accommodations help do that: not just to include people with disabilities in the workforce, but mobilize all of our energies. After all, who wants a company or an economy working only on partial capacity?A Melanie Minute is an exclusive feature of Connect4Life: The Podcast, brought to you by host Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO.For more information about Connect4life visit www.connect4life.ca.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #accessibilitycanada #connect4life #aoda #unitednations #crpd #melanietaddeo #podcasts #podcast #disabilitycanada #workplaceaccommodations #inclusionaccommodations #disabilityaccommodations #melanieminute

    A Melanie Minute: Effective Communication

Season 4, Episode 1A Melanie Minute: Effective CommunicationThe old adage that reminds us to say what we mean if we mean what we say is fundamental to effective communication ... meaning to say, that is, in sum, in other words … well … now that’s not very effective, is it?And as host Melanie Taddeo explains in this Melanie Minute, effective communication in fact goes beyond what we write or speak, beyond the use of cliches or trite expressions – it’s part of our facial and body language, whether the messages are intended or not.Sometimes it’s what the receiving end interprets that can be more important than what is intended by the sender. It’s all part of that package that contributes to whether our communication is effective or whether we end up communicating something a little different than what we hoped. So what better way to begin season 4 than with this Melanie Minute that reminds us to keep our eyes, ears and senses tuned-in to how our communications are received and understood.A Melanie Minute is an exclusive feature of Connect4Life: The Podcast, brought to you by host Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO.For more information about Connect4life visit www.connect4life.ca.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #accessibilitycanada #connect4life #aoda #unitednations #crpd #melanietaddeo #podcasts #podcast #disabilitycanada #communication #businesscommunication #melanieminute

Profiles in Advocacy: Maureen Haan – Myth Busting around the World

Season 3, Episode 21Profiles in Advocacy: Maureen Haan – Myth Busting around the WorldIn this episode of Profiles in Advocacy, our focus in season three of Connect4Life: The Podcast, host Melanie Taddeo interviews employment specialists Maureen Haan.Maureen Haan is the President and CEO of the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work. And her role is more than about filling jobs for people with disabilities – she’s more like a talent agent, out their discovering opportunities and energizing economic potential. The Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (or CCRW, as it’s known) serves as an intermediary in enhancing the employment market and not just as a job placement service. The CCRW works across Canada and engages in dialogue and advocacy around the world. The work of CCRW, as Mareen explains, exemplifies both Small A and Big A advocacy: the high-level meetings as well as everyday grassroots efforts, as you’ll hear in this insightful conversation with host Melanie Taddeo.Maureen is out there performing what she calls “mythbusting” – doing whatever she can do to shatter the myths that hiring someone with a disability is challenging or burdensome. She’s a leader busting that myth and demonstrating how higher levels of meaningful employment for people with disabilities can positively transform companies and economies. What’s her personal approach to advocacy and public outreach? Simply recognizing the work that’s already been done, the foundations created by those who have preceded her, and building on that work. In other words, a nod to the past, a shoutout to the present and an energized outlook for the future.Check out the programs and services available at www.ccrw.org.For more information about Connect4life visit www.connect4life.ca.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #accessibilitycanada #connect4life #aoda #unitednations #crpd #ccrw #melanietaddeo #connectelife #podcasts #podcast #disabilitycanada #maureenhaan

Season 3, Episode 18A Melanie Minute: Taking Care of Our CaregiversThe realities of living with a disability and the importance of caregivers is the topic of this Melanie Minute. And more to point, Melanie highlights the needs of caregivers themselves.Whether paid personal support workers or unpaid family members and friends, caregiving entails so many facets of consideration, not to mention how caregiving can often take an enormous toil on the caregiver. And as host Melanie Taddeo points out in this candid Melanie Minute, without the appropriate recognition and support for the caregivers in our society, those who tend to the daily needs of someone with a disability or someone aging at home can lead to caregiver burnout. Host Melanie Taddeo chats with Dan Walters, who is both a lecturer and the man who coordinates practica for students at Ontario Tech University in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. For Dan, this is more than a job of synching up a practical learning setting with the University’s requirements for a student to graduate; his focus is on finding the right ingredients to achieve a qualitive level of empowerment and self-determination for the individual. His method follows the ancient practice of listening, so as not to make assumptions, and to achieve a greater understanding about authentic accessibility and inclusion. As Dan explains, he's always looking around, self-reflectively, asking: who is not included in the dialogue – whose voice hasn’t been heard at the table? Listen to the episode and hear from one of Ontario’s most passionate and authentic champions of total inclusivity, and how simple, everyday steps can form a type of advocacy that can become second nature to us.Learn more about Dan Walters and his approach to the practice of advocating for inclusion and accessibility by visiting Ontario Tech University. Like Connect4Life, Ontario Tech University is also a recently accredited NGO to the United Nations on matters of disability. For more information visit www.connect4life.ca.#melanieminute #melanietaddeo #disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #crpd #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #ontariotechu #danwalters #inclusiveeducation #accessibleeducation #accessiblecanada

SolutionFEST: A 2025 United Nations Special for December 3

Season 3, Episode 9Connect4Life Hosts “SolutionFest”, a Dialogue on Inclusion for UN Day December 3, 2025Every December 3, the United Nations observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year’s UN theme is Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress. As part of Connect4Life’s celebration and our contribution to the global dialogue around inclusion, we present this special episode – SolutionFest 2025: Making a World Inclusive of People with Disabilities.Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO of Connect4Life, hosted this online panel discussion, which was recorded on November 19, and features Lilly Cereghini, Paige Whitehouse, Prateek Mohanty and Sean Pickard, each of whom lives a disability. What you’ll hear is the unedited conversation of Melanie and her four guest panelists deliberating on the issues of priority, the roles of national and sub-national governments, the roles of people with disabilities as well as their families and communities, and the question of building and sustaining meaningful bridges between those with disabilities and the able-bodied.Consistent with this year’s theme for UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, as well as the fundamental activity of the United Nations – which, in essence, is to conduct respectful and peaceful dialogue around issues and concerns that help advance all of us, this dialogue highlights lived perspectives, and it also suggests solutions and recommended actions, all from a Canadian perspective. For more information visit Connect4Life at www.connect4life.caAlso be sure to check out the UN’s online resources at https://www.un.org/en/observances/day-of-persons-with-disabilities.....................................................United Nations Theme 2025: Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progressConnect4Life is an accredited NGO of the United Nations Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at UN Headquarters in New York.* The views and opinions expressed by guest panelists in this episode do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of Connect4Life.#disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #connect4life #unitednations #unday #solutionfest #crpd

A Melanie Minute: Obstacles, Then and Now

Season 3, Episode 8A Melanie Minute: Obstacles, Then and NowSaturday November 29, 2025Forty-four years ago, the first-of-its-kind report was released by the Government of Canada. That report was called Obstacles. The year 1981 was designated as an international year highlighting persons with disabilities. Canada’s national government took a bold step in advance of that UN year, and launched a nation-wide comprehensive review on inclusion, accessibility, the lives of Canadians with disabilities and the role of the Government of Canada. The committee that undertook that historic study travelled throughout Canada, listening, reviewing and learning. The result was the report called Obstacles. And the reason we have produced this special Melanie Minute in advance of the 2025 UN Day of Persons with Disabilities is how this episode fits nicely within our season three focus on Profiles in Advocacy. You see, that committee in 1981 was chaired by a deeply passionate Canadian who helped put disability issues into the national dialogue – the Late Honourable David P Smith, who at the time served as a Member of Parliament and later as a Senator. Senator Smith also championed the inclusion of disability into the content of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which became law the very next year, in 1982.So in this Melanie Minute, Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO of Connect4Life pays tribute to the work of our former parliamentarians, to the vision that supported and produced the Obstacles report, and to the leadership of the Honourable Senator David P Smith. Advancing Dialogue and Building Community: A Conversation with Ben Akuoko

Episode 4Advancing Dialogue and Building Community: A Conversation with Ben AkuokoThis episode of Connect4Life: The Podcast features a conversation with change-maker, Ghanian-born Ben Akuoko, a social worker with low vision who champions the notion of diversity within disability. In Perspective: A Conversion about Living with a Disability

Season 2, Episode 19June 17, 2025In Perspective: A Conversion about Living with a DisabilityIn this episode of Connect 4 Life: The Podcast, Host Melanie Taddeo chats with Mark Brown about what it means to live with a disability. Mark has a physical disability, and he relies on the use of a wheelchair to get around, while Melanie is legally blind. Despite the difference in each disability, both Mark and Melanie experience many of the same things each and every day, which range from stigmas and misconceptions about a person’s disability to an all-too-often misunderstanding about the abilities that someone might actually have – despite the disability on the surface. You’ll also enjoy hearing about some of their pet peeves, including able-bodied people parking their cars in spots designated for someone with a disability, or simply not being able to get into an establishment. It's a candid and enlightening conversation that helps everyone put a different perspective on disability, and just might help steer people into thinking more about ability than disability.Visit www.connect4life.ca for more information about what Connect 4 Life can do for you, your organization and your community. #disbilities #nonprofits #charity #fundraising #givingback #nonprofitorganization #socialgood #makeanimpact #socialimpact #notforprofit #makeadifference #causes #supportnonprofits #dogood #inclusion #disabilityawareness #accessibility #disabilityadvocate #advocacy #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #careerdevelopment #skilldevelopmenttraining #connect4life

A Melanie Minute: Governments Working Together for Canadians with Disabilities

Season 2, Episode 18 - June 9, 2025A Melanie Minute: Governments Working Together for Canadians with DisabilitiesEvery now and then we see governments at different levels working cooperatively, harmonizing their programs and services, so that the beneficiaries of those programs are not adversely affected. And this is the case with the most recent announcements by the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada. With new national disability benefits coming into effect in July, the provincial government has introduced measures to ensure maximum effect and to make sure that people with disabilities are not negatively affected, if even inadvertently so. This Melanie Minute explores the new announcements related to the ODSP, the Canada Disability Benefit, and the impacts on Canadians with disabilities. As Melanie explains, these are excellent first steps, and they exemplify the potential for working collaboratively and building better and more effective programs and services for people with disabilities. A Melanie Minute is a special feature of Connect 4 Life: The Podcast, which we produce regularly – or, pretty much whenever Connect 4 Life’s CEO, Melanie Taddeo, has something meaningful to share with our listeners.Similar to an audio blog, A Melanie Minute might actually be a minute in length, or it might be 8 or 10 minutes. The Speech introduces the government’s direction and goals, and it outlines how it will work to achieve them. This is a very special Melanie Minute, one that features words spoken by King Charles III himself. This Melanie Minute also features Melanie Taddeo, CEO of Connect 4 Life, reflecting not only on the momentous occasion of the King’s visit to Canada, but on the some of the content in the Speech itself.Or, rather, the absence of certain content. In contrast to previous years, the Government of Canada’s governing agenda makes no explicit mention of disability or accessibility. In fact, the newly constituted national Cabinet features no person whose explicit responsibility it is to oversee the coordination of programs, policies and services as regards Canadians with disabilities.
