Kara Ryan, a communication strategist and Founder of Klyr Strategies, joined me to talk about the importance of clear and simple communication and why simplifying complex concepts can help a leader connect with an audience. Ryan shared that one of the most common communication mistakes company leaders make is failing to involve communications teams early in major strategic decisions; which results in messaging that sounds inauthentic. We also discussed how she's using AI to create an advisory board to help guide her new business. and how AI is creating new opportunities for independent work. Reaching your potential with Jason Griggs

In this episode, I discussed the life lessons endurance sports teach about discipline, resilience, leadership, and success with Jason Griggs, GEP of Global Software Sales at GEP Worldwide. Jason shared how running marathons and competing in Ironman triathlons after a divorce at age 40 transformed his life and strengthened his 30-year sales career. We talked about the importance of knowing your "why," embracing discomfort, and learning to love the process rather than just chasing outcomes. Our conversation also covered leadership, motivation, parenting, and the value of discipline and hard work learned through experience. Enjoy! The Price of Value with Patrick McCullough

Patrick McCullough - Partner at ⁨@holdenadvisors⁩ , joined me for to talk about pricing, value, and profitability in B2B businesses. We explored why pricing is one of the most important — and most overlooked — fundamentals in business. Patrick broke down how companies create value by helping customers increase revenue, reduce costs, or mitigate risk, and why pricing should evolve continuously as markets change. We also discussed margins across industries, the challenges of selling through procurement teams, the importance of strong customer relationships, and how AI is changing the sales landscape. One of the biggest takeaways: businesses should review and refine pricing regularly — not just when problems arise. Bearing witness to grief with Randy Aguero

Thank you to Randy Aguero for sharing his deeply personal journey through grief and mental health struggles after losing his oldest son Dima to fentanyl poisoning in March 2021. Randy shared how he delayed taking mental health leave from his corporate position for over three years, even being offered early departure by his company's health department, until he was finally diagnosed with high-functioning depression at near-crisis level in 2024. The conversation explored Randy's military background, his current MBSR teacher certification training, and his mission to help other young men express vulnerability and process grief, particularly drawing from his experience mentoring others through similar struggles. Randy emphasized the importance of authentic connection and "bearing witness" to others' suffering rather than well-intentioned but ineffective offers to "just call if you need anything." The full interview will drop on May 5th.

There's no cheat code...You have to go do 'the thing' with Kendra Cato

In this episode, I sit down with Kendra Cato for a real, unscripted conversation about leadership, resilience, and what it actually looks like to grow through uncertainty. Kendra shares her journey—from joining a pandemic-era book club that turned into something much bigger, to co-authoring Together We Rise alongside 14 other female executives. What started as connection during a chaotic time evolved into a powerful platform for shared voices and leadership stories. We also get into her more personal chapter—writing Rising with Courage while navigating a career transition after being laid off. That part of the conversation hits differently. It's about identity, uncertainty, and choosing to move forward when the path isn't clear. Kendra opens up about loss—the passing of her father and a close friend—and how those experiences reshaped how she leads, how she shows up, and what actually matters. There's a level of perspective here that you can't fake. We talk about: Why the people you surround yourself with matter more than you think What authenticity really looks like in professional environments Taking risks when you don't have all the answers How to stay grounded when life throws something unexpected your way This one isn't theory—it's lived experience. If you've ever been in a moment where things felt uncertain or out of your control, there's something in here for you

Consistency, Transparency & Context with Kip Wright

In this episode, I sat down with Kip Wright for a real conversation about what's actually happening inside staffing companies right now—and what leaders should be doing about it. Kip is the Founder o& CEO f Wright Path Advisors, where he works closely with staffing owners navigating everything from day-to-day leadership challenges to major transitions like private equity deals. We covered a lot in this one… What we talked about: How Kip built WightPath Advisors to support smaller and mid-sized staffing firms through the full ownership lifecycle The reality of today's staffing market—and why sales teams are struggling more than most leaders want to admit Why automated outreach and volume-based tactics are falling flat (and what to do instead) The shift back to relationship-driven sales—and what that actually looks like in practice Kip's approach to leadership, discipline, and accountability Why tracking the right metrics (and making them visible) changes behavior fast The role of recognition—and how most companies completely miss the mark here One thing that stood out to me: Kip doesn't overcomplicate it. His philosophy is simple—be disciplined, measure what matters, and make it visible. Sounds basic… but very few teams actually do it. We also went a little deeper toward the end—talking about the need for better, more constructive conversations across different perspectives. Not just in business, but in general. That's a conversation I'm looking forward to continuing with him. 🎧 Watch or Listen to Cut Through the Noise here: YouTube: www.youtube.com/@cutthroughthenoisewithdave5192 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cut-through-the-noise-with-dave-turano/id1466812912?i=1000760035320 If you're in staffing—or leading any kind of sales team—this one will hit close to home.

Uncovering the Real Person with Vinda Souza

In this episode, I sat down with Vinda to talk about her journey from growing up in Saudi Arabia to moving to the U.S. at 15, and how finding debate helped her navigate that transition and ultimately shaped her career in communication and persuasion. We also got into how her background in performing sharpened her ability to read people (including spotting genuine vs. fake smiles), and how that carries into her work today with RevAssured—helping staffing agencies go beyond resumes to understand the real person behind the candidate. It's a conversation about authenticity, human connection, and why recruiting needs to move from transactional to relational.

    Delusional Belief with Eric Czerlonka

Eric Czerlonka is CEO and Managing Director of Czerlonka Event Design and Management - an organization known for planning luxury events and excuting unique travel experiences in places like Marrakesh, Buenos Aires and Rwanda. They also customize domestic excursions in the US to fit the personalities of their flourishing client base. To say Czerlonka has traveled the world is an understatement, but in doing so he has amassed a powerful community of connections that support him to create these experiences. Eric is one of five children - born and raised in Dracut, MA. He had a nice childhood, but not an extravagant one. His family vacations consisted of day trips to the beach or weekends in the mountains. In fact, he did not fly in an airplane until he was 16 or travel outside the US until he was 30. Czerlonka chose to study Engineering at the New York Institute of Technology, and learned quickly that it wasnt for him Four years later graduated with a BA in Adversting. What did he took afterwards?!? He spent the better part of the next ten years waiting tables and bartending - four of them at the Navy Pier! The hospitality industry taught Czerlonka a lot about people, connections, service and relationships - all of which are integral to his business today. After his days waiting and bartending, he landed Director level jobs at the likes of The Boston Harbor Hotel, The Ritz Carlton and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, where he got the equivalent of a doctorate degree in Luxury Event Planning, Catering and Superior Customer Service. His path wasn't planned It was indirect. And it was hard at times But in the end, Czerlonka wouldn't change a thing Why does this man have a delusional belief in himself? Find out on 12/17... Nation Building with Mark Nessbaum

Mark Nussbaum was one of the founders of Signature Consultants, served as its COO for 20 years and most recently served as the Chief Administrative Officer of Dexian. Currently, Mark serves as a Strategic Advisor. One part visionary, one part anthropologist, one part lawyer, Mark manages to stay a step ahead — in business, strategy, IT staffing, you name it — while remaining utterly present when you talk to him. In all of his roles, Mark heralds the importance of getting to know and understand people. He leads by example. Growth mindset isn't a buzzword for him. It's a way of life. And he makes sure the people throughout the organization have the feedback and tools they need to learn, grow and thrive. Mark joined Signature in 2000, following undergrad and law degrees from the University of Michigan, being senior partner at the leading law firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, and serving as EVP at premiere medical real estate development firm Rendina Companies. He's a passionate Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen fan (and a music lover, in general) who isn't afraid to call on a favorite lyric to drive home his point. Mark calls both Boston and Fort Lauderdale home, but makes his way across the U.S. for speaking engagements about the future of work and the nature of companies. Consequential Thinking with Renee Viens

Like many children born into military families, Renee Viens moved a lot when she was a child. After her parents divorced when she was thirteen, Renee stepped up to help her Mom. If something needed to get done - she figured it out. 'I was a little Mom' Renee became an adult an early age; taking on housekeeping duties, meal prep and caring for her younger sister. Renee learned the value of anticipation, risk management and consequential thinking well before she went to college. These same skills still serve her today as an Executive Assistant, Coach and Mentor. 'I've made art form out of living around other people for their convenience,' as a behind the scenes support system, organizer and copilot, which is why she is able to successfully support many talented professionals of all levels as they navigate their careers. 'Executive Assistants put so much into the things that we do - We are our jobs. We are kind of married to our work - The people we support are always in our brain.' Please take the time to listen to Renee's insights on mentorship, coaching and what it is like to be inside the mind of an Executive. She was put here to do this work! https://reneeviens.com/

Mental Health and the Modern Dad with Liam Martin

Welcome to Cut Through the Noise, bringing you the truth behind the headlines in business and current events, Hosted by Dave Turano. Not many people have the courage to walk away from the security of a great job, especially when they love what they do. But that's s exactly what Liam Martin did. After fifteen years in broadcast television; the last four as morning anchor at WBZ Boston; Liam said goodbye to explore a new venture in the private sector. Martin partnered up with Jackie Bruno and Rachel Robbins at Newsmaker Marketing; a Public Relations firm that helps its clients tell their stories through video, social media marketing, and by helping them to get hits on the news! It's been six weeks since he made the announcement and he has no regrets at all! 'What it really boiled down to was my mental health, and wanting to be the husband and dad that I want to be,' is what Liam expressed to me when I asked him why he decided to do this. About a year into working the morning shift, he knew something wasn't right... Getting up at 2:15 AM each day was taking a toll on him...fog-brain, depression, and anxiety had set in, only exacerbating some of the mental health challenges that he had experienced as a child. Thankfully, with the support of his family, friends and regular therapy, he is working to incorporate several routines that have helped him to feel a little better. You can hear what Liam's routines are by subscribing to Cut Through the Noise on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music or YouTube. Hope you enjoy this conversation. I know that I did! Scott received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Stonehill College and was presented with the Gold Medal by the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy for receiving the highest score in the state in the May 1993 CPA exam. Salespeople Forgot How to Sell - with Kortney Harmon

Anyone remember the 'The Island of Misfit Toys' from the animated Christmas special, 'Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer'? It was a place that an unwanted toy was sent if a child didn't want to play with it... 'Charlie' in the box, the spotted elephant, and the water pistol that shot jelly were just three of many toys that were relegated to the island. If that special were made in 2024, I would imagine that the cast might have included 'Salespeople that forgot how to sell!' Bad joke... Thank you to Kortney Harmon, with Crelate, for a fun conversation about sales, recruiting and the importance of having a PROCESS! The mood of the staffing industry is somewhat flat these days A number of companies have reported that business is down between 15-30%! Why??? Lot's of reasons - Poor leadership and lack of process are two of them! Kortney shared a number of great ideas on how to drive engagement, consistency and confidence into sales and recruiting teams in the current environment Hope you enjoy! The Boys Team with Survivor Nicaragua Contestant Carolyn Rivera

Someone forgot to teach Carolyn Rivera how to doubt herself... She was born to believe! Raised in Queens by a single Mom, Carolyn never bought into the story that girls couldn't compete with boys, which is why she decided to tryout for the boys gymnastics team at Forest Hills High School when she was 15. 'This is the boys gym,' someone barked when she arrived. 'I know...I'm here to tryout for the boys team,' Carolyn quipped back. Shortly after that she found herself in the principals office... 'Why should I let you join the boys team?,' he asked 'Because I am better than some of the guys trying out' Guess what??? She made it! (The first girl to do so! Times were different then) Turns out that gender wasn't an obstacle... After High School Carolyn went on to build a successful career as a Learning & Development professional at companies like Citibank and MetLife, while raising three children. Years later, while in her 50's, Carolyn was selected to compete against a number of 20 and 30-something competitors on the reality show, Survivor... She finished second! Turns out that age wasn't an obstalce... After 'Survivor,' Carolyn started her own HR Consulting firm, did a Ted Talk and wrote a book And just a few years later, she lost her husband of 43 years unexpectedly Was that an obtacle? 'It was a crazy time - a shock. My whole life changed,' Carolyn reflected What is she up to now? Listen today!

I Choose to Focus on the Good Things - It Really Saved My Life - with Sean McCourt

I'm proud to call this guy a friend - he's an amazing individual! Sean McCourt grew up in Teaneck, NJ; a lower middle class town just outisde of New York City. He his thankful to his Mom & Dad for instilling core values and just enough 'healthy neglect' to help him find his way in life. After High School, Sean spent four years at Roger Williams College in Rhode Island, where he ALMOST graduated! When he left college, Sean took a sales job with a staffing firm in Boston. And over the next fifteen years he often wondered what it would be like to have his own company, but the one thing that held him back was fear. 'I was afraid' Ultimately, it was Sean's wife Katherine that inspired him to take the chance. 'Stop being a P@$$y - Sh$t or get off the pot. You can do this!' And just like that...Longford & Associates was born. One year later, Katherine along with their three kids (Jack 5, Claire 2 and Will 3 months) had gone to visit her parents in upstate New York. Sean stayed home to work on the company and while at dinner with friends, he received a call from his father-in-law. that would change his forever. Saying 'No' to Alcohol; Selling my Company; Living to 100 with Ken Johnson

60 going on 26! Ken Johnson has more energy than most people half his age, which is a good thing because he plans to live for another 30-40 years! In 2022, Ken stepped down as CEO of @masmedicalstaffing after nearly twenty years at the helm. Just after 911, he and his team stumbled into the Healthcare Staffing space, but no one could have anticipated that the company would sell for nine figures two decades later. Their growth was 100% orgnanic - no mergers - no acquisitions - just 'brute force' and the willingess to embrace technology. In the early days Ken threw himself into his job, but 17 years ago his wife, Susan, confronted him about his drinking. 'It's the booze or it's me and the kids,' she said. She changed his life that day. Ken went on to say, 'I quit drinking and it was hard - it was the hardest thing I've ever done.' 'The battle was psychological, but today my life is so much better. Today is the happiest I've ever been.' In this conversation Ken and I talked about business, booze and life after selling his company. I hope it's a source of inspiration for anyone that might be struggling with an addiction or perhaps looking for a meaningful way to spend their time after moving on from a business or a career. #healthcare #nursing #healthcareworkers #travelnurse #technology #uber #alcohol #drinking #opportunity #hobbies #painting #guitar #newhampshire #acadianationalpark❤️ #maine #usnavy #coaching #leadership #sale #communication #workethic #hardwork #belief #ceo #privateequity #founder #living

Get Rid of the Shitty Parts of Drinking with Caroline Holke

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, many of us will have ample opportunity to gather with friends, family and colleagues to eat, drink and celebrate...and then drink some more! Who hasn't pre-gamed before an office party or polished off a few bottles of wine with friends after shopping?1?! Much like coffee, Alcohol has become a staple in the daily lives of many successful people. The marketing dollars spent to promote alcohol consumption is only rivaled by the money spent by automodbile industry. Alcohol has been normalized, glamourized and accessorized to a population that also shames the people that drink more than they would like. Caroline Holke helps successful women get rid of the shitty parts of drinking so they can create a life they wouldn't dream of numbing out of. Most people focus on what to DO to cut back on their drinking, while Caroline helps her clients tease out what is "driving them to drink" in the first place. Addressing these underlying, root causes helps her clients create sustainable change in their relationship with drinking. Caroline's work centers on teaching her clients how to apply critical thinking skills to their own thinking because we believe what we think! When you learn how to think on purpose, you can go from wanting to numb out to escape your life to creating a life that you don't want to miss any of. In this past year alone, research shows that women are drinking 41% more than they were before the pandemic. The vast majoirty of Caroline's clients do not 'look' like they have a problem. Many of them are highly accomplished personally and professionally, but inside they are hurting. This episode might provide options to the gray area drinker that is looking for an option besides AA. Vaccines with Dr. Adjoa Smalls Mantey

In 2020, COVID-19 threw the world into turmoil. For many of us, this was the first time that we had to take immediate – and drastic – action to protect our health and the health of others. We had to follow a new set of emergency policies and protocols, put in place at a time when many experts and authorities were only making the best decisions they could with the limited information they had. In a political climate that was already tense, having to separate from one another only made us more divided. Some masked, some didn't. Some believed that the best protection for children was to keep them away from school; others feared the long-term consequences of closing schools. Some isolated; others continued to gather. Then came the vaccines. So did the social pressure, the misinformation, the lack of trust – and the mandates. If the pandemic was already political, COVID shots and the messaging around them escalated the tension. And even with the CDC changing their guidelines and many cities doing away with mandates, people are still at odds with one another over vaccines, boosters, and the policies around COVID. In this episode, we hear from Dr. Adjoa Smalls Mantey. As a viral immunology researcher and trained psychiatrist, Adjoa understands why educating people about vaccines is just as important as making them. We discuss vaccine hesitancy, COVID policies, and how we can be more intentional about how we share information about illness and immunizations. In addition to her work as a psychiatrist, Adjoa is also the co-author of Anjali the Brave, a book that teaches children about vaccines. Autoimmune Disorders and Chronic Illness with Josie Warren

Like many Americans, Josie Warren touts a troubling backlog of health issues. Throughout her life, she suffered from thyroid issues, eating disorders, alcoholism, and a host of other challenges that kept her and her body on a perpetual see-saw of symptoms. Being chronically ill became a way of life for Josie. She relied on pharmaceuticals to get through the day, and she was sure that her body was meant to live in a state of constant sickness. But when Josie became so ill that she had to leave her job as a therapist at the age of twenty-eight, she realized that treating her symptoms wasn't enough anymore – she had to find a way to rid herself of the illness altogether. She ended up at a health center that specializes in chronic illness in Colorado. That was when a professional finally asked her the pivotal question: "Why are you doing this to yourself?" By looking inward, Josie had to confront all of the stressors that were activating her sympathetic nervous system and making her ill. But as she continued to learn from herself and others, she also came to understand that external stress isn't the culprit. We're not getting sick because of our environment, or the food we're eating, or the job we're working. We're getting sick because we've lost the ability to respond to stress in the way that we're meant to. Now, Josie is an educator who shares her knowledge and expertise with those who are looking to heal themselves from illness. According to Josie, when we take ownership over our stressors, we rebuild our resilience; when we learn how to do life, our bodies enter homeostasis – and finally, we begin to heal. Josie is a consultant at The Hashimoto's Fix. Find her at hashimotosfix.com Like this episode? Share it around and write us a review.

Cancer, loss, and grief with Kim Hamer

Loss is catastrophic. Nothing will fill the void left by a loved one, and there's no quick fix for a broken heart. Loss can also be the catalyst for uncertainty. What will life look like, without that person that was so vital to our existence? Now that they're gone, what will happen to the life we built with them? How will we manage, and who will we become? Kim Hamer found herself asking these questions thirteen years ago, when her husband passed away from cancer. Left to grieve, Kim had to support their three kids. She became a widow in a community full of wives. She had to reimagine her future – now without the man who was supposed to be her forever. Kim also had to field a catapult of condolences from everyone around her – all of which came from sympathy and kindness, but some of which left her feeling worse. When someone in our life – friend, family member, colleague, or client – is grieving their own tragedy, many of us find ourselves at a loss for how to help. What do we say to them, when we know that our words won't fix anything? How can we offer support, and what should that support look like? In this episode, Kim shares how she helps people, communities, and companies process turbulence and loss. Kim acknowledges that when it comes to soothing someone in grief, we really are inadequate – even if we do all their grocery shopping for the month. But we can also be thoughtful. We can pay close attention and step in at the right moments. We can understand that we matter, and that there are authentic, memorable ways that we can support someone when their world is falling apart. Kim Hamer is the author of 100 Acts of Love: The Girlfriend's Guide to Loving Your Friend Through Cancer or Loss.
