Epictetus on How to Be Calm (The Power of Indifference) (Stoicism) | Einzelgänger

Epictetus on How to Be Calm (The Power of Indifference) (Stoicism) The Stoics believe that regardless of our hardships, we have the choice of attitude. We should approach all things that are not within our control with an indifferent stance. Epictetus spoke of “contempt” toward things not in our control, in contrast to those in our control, such as our opinions, pursuits, and other actions originating from our ability to choose.By being indifferent to things not in our control, we take away the fuel that causes us to be emotionally disturbed. This enables our minds to be tranquil in all circumstances, as Epictetus called it, “in a state conformable to nature.”Check out the full video: https://youtu.be/1d2G7V_Oz5o#indifference #epictetus #stoicism Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5star for new episodes. Epictetus & The Dichotomy of Control | STOICISM | Einzelgänger

Epictetus & The Dichotomy of Control | STOICISM Full video: https://youtu.be/p2KHo95QknkIf we only focus on what we can control, and let go of everything else, then nothing outside of ourselves can harm us. Now, the question arises: what exactly lies within our control, and what doesn’t? Here’s what Epictetus stated in the first chapter of the Enchiridion, and I quote:“Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.”#epictetus #stoicism #stoic Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5star for new episodes. The Philosopher Who Urinated On People | DIOGENES | Einzelgänger

The Philosopher Who Urinated On People | DIOGENES Diogenes strongly opposed social values and institutions, because, according to him, these are at odds with human nature. He believed that human society infused us with all kinds of unnatural desires that are not only obsolete but also prevent us from being happy. Therefore, we should strip ourselves of these corrupting manmade constructs, so we’re able to live how we’re supposed to live: in agreement with nature.Diogenes’ stance toward everything cultured was very obvious. He practiced what he preached, behaving obscenely, with no regard for convention. It’s no surprise that people called him ‘doggish’, doglike, or simply ‘the dog’. This video explores Diogenes’ philosophy, and what we can learn from his ideas.Cuts, voice, footage, script by Einzelgänger. All I’m Offering is the Truth | The Philosophy of the Matrix | Einzelgänger

All I’m Offering is the Truth | The Philosophy of the Matrix Check out my novel The Urge: Fall of a Stoic: https://einzelganger.co/urgeThe Matrix, a science fiction film created by the Wachowskis, is probably one of the most influential movies ever made. The story starts when computer programmer Thomas Anderson, operating as a hacker under the alias “Neo,” discovers the truth about the world he’s living in, as he becomes aware of the existence of something known as “The Matrix.”The Matrix is considered a philosophical film that contains many existing philosophical and religious themes, like prophecy, love, truth, karma, the nature of reality, and living in a simulation. But there seems to be a particularly close connection between The Matrix and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. This video (All I’m Offering Is The Truth | The Philosophy of the Matrix) is a philosophical analysis of the Matrix film. It analyses The Matrix through the lens of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave while exploring the following question: do we, as human beings, actually want the truth? Please note: this video contains spoilers that reveal the plot.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Why We Are Weak | The Philosophy of Epictetus Full video: https://youtu.be/p2KHo95QknkWhat matters and doesn’t matter, according to Epictetus, is bound to the reality of our place as reasonable beings in an everchanging environment. This reality Epictetus makes clear in the underlying tenet of his work: ‘the dichotomy of control.’ Some things are in our control, others not. If we manage to concern ourselves with the things in our control, we are in a position of strength. But if we neglect these things and focus on what’s not in our control, we are in a position of weakness.#stoicism #epictetus #stoic Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5star for new episodes. When Life is Meaningless (And Why We Feel Worthless) | Einzelgänger

When Life is Meaningless (And Why We Feel Worthless) Why are we thrown into this world? What are we here to do? Could it be that we’re here for no particular reason and that life on Earth is nothing more than a beautiful yet meaningless coincidence? In times of religious decline, mankind is faced with the possibility that its existence is inherently meaningless. For many, this is frightening. The idea that our lives don’t matter, can be difficult to accept. To give our lives at least some significance, even if it’s just on a terrestrial level, we started to create our own meaning. So, as the humans we are, we began to define what it means to live a meaningful life. What’s worth living for, and what isn’t? What are the requirements? When we have decided what a meaningful life entails, we continue grasping for it in an almost pathological manner. Because if we fail to give our lives meaning, our lives truly don’t matter. As a consequence, many people feel that their lives are worthless. They wake up, eat, engage in their daily activities, eat, go to sleep, repeat, repeat, and repeat, as opposed to those ‘lucky few’ who have found meaning in their lives, albeit because of raising children, a socalled ‘meaningful’ job, and other activities that make their existence on this desolate tiny dot surrounded by a suffocating blackness, a bit more bearable. This video explores why we feel worthless, and the beauty and ugliness of a meaningless life (inspired by philosopher Albert Camus).Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Shortly before he died, Musashi compiled twentyone principles on how a warrior should live. These timeless principles known as Dokkōdō can inspire us today to live well. This threepart series elaborates on the twentyone principles from Musashi’s Dokkōdō. The first part and second part explored the first fourteen principles. This third and final part further explores the path of the warrior, based on the last seven principles. Please note, the elaborations in this video are based on existing philosophies, the author’s interpretations, and reasoning, and are intended to be an inspiration for presentday life.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Why Stupidity is Power | Priceless Benefits of Being Stupid Loose! On Letting Stuff Go (book): https://amzn.to/3QVfrqMPeople generally fear being perceived as stupid. Often, stupid people are looked down upon and laughed at. Society perceives stupid people as useless, as a burden rather than an asset. Hence, most of us try to prevent ourselves from appearing stupid in front of coworkers, fellow students, family members, and friends. And sometimes, we try to appear much smarter than we are just so people hold us in high esteem - just so people won’t think of us as stupid.Video: Why Stupidity is Power | Priceless Benefits of Being StupidSupport the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Life is Great When It's Ending | The Philosophy of Seneca | Einzelgänger

Life is Great When It's Ending | The Philosophy of Seneca One day, Seneca visited his house in the countryside after a long absence. He was baffled about how his estate was crumbling, and the garden trees had lost all their leaves. He took it out on the landlord, who then explained that even though he did everything in his power to maintain the place, the trees and house were old. Bewildered about how fast his property had fallen apart, the reality of aging became apparent to Seneca.Video: If Today Was Your Last Day... | The Philosophy of SenecaSupport the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Wabi-Sabi | A Japanese Philosophy of Perfect Imperfection | Einzelgänger

WabiSabi | A Japanese Philosophy of Perfect Imperfection Taoism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/tao/The pursuit of perfection has become the norm in today’s world, where chronic dissatisfaction, burnout, depression, and anxiety reign supreme. We’ve subjected ourselves to unrealistic standards and rigorously chase an ideal that’s impossible to reach.Advertisements show us snapshots of handsome people enjoying their favorite drink dancing among a crowd of fashion models with eversmiling faces. This uncompromising image of perfect happiness yells at us: “This is how your life should be.” And so, we try to mimic the sublimity of a lifestyle ideal. We spend fortunes on tweaking ourselves, our lives, our environment and then flood social media with pictures and videos to show the world the exquisiteness of our lives. Perfection is what we need to accomplish: a perfectly symmetrical face, a perfectly sculpted body, perfect hair, skin, jawline, house, friends, family, partner, children, vacations, or in short: an existence without fault. But this isn’t only impossible and exhausting to pursue; it’s also unnatural as far as the Japanese world view of wabisabi is concerned.Wabisabi rejects the pursuit of perfection and embraces the reality of imperfection. The philosophy behind wabisabi can help us escape the hamster wheel of chasing an ideal life and teaches us to appreciate existence as it is: perfectly imperfect.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? How to Stop Procrastinating | Einzelgänger

How to Stop Procrastinating When we procrastinate, we are immersed in future thinking, and unable to do the work that we had planned to do in the present moment. The consequences of this behavior are often harmful. For example, if we refrain from performing necessary tasks, this will negatively influence future results and the acquirement of resources, while utilizing the resources we have accumulated by past endeavors. We stagnate, and with stagnation comes deterioration. But most ironic is that the act of repeated procrastination probably costs us more energy than performing the task itself. This video will explore the mechanisms of procrastination. What is it? Where does it come from? What do different philosophies (Stoicism & Taoism) say about it, and what wisdom do they contain that might help us out? Philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Lao Tzu had a thing or two to say about this. How to stop procrastinating? How to be more productive? Live More by Doing Less | The Philosophy of Slow Living Taoism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/tao/A growing group of people believes that we’re better off slowing down. This slower approach to life is known as ‘slow living.’ As a countermovement, ‘slow living’ opposes the fastpaced life that aims for many experiences in a short time, as living at high speed means we’re often living hastily, chaotically, superficially, and with a lack of appreciation of the moment.Video: The Philosophy of Slow Living | Live More by Doing LessSupport the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Again, Epictetus doesn’t encourage us to not care about anything. On the contrary: living a good and moral life in accordance with nature is a Stoic’s main goal, which lies entirely within our control. But he does encourage us not to cling to what’s not in our control because these things are fickle, weak, and unreliable.#stoicism #epictetus #notcaring Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5star for new episodes. TAOISM | The Fasting of the Heart | Einzelgänger

TAOISM | The Fasting of the Heart Taoism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/tao/In psychology, as well as popular culture, we see the emerging of different types of detox. The dopamine detox, for example, also called the ‘dopamine fast’ is currently presented as a way to “reset” our brain’s reward system, by abstaining from all kinds of activities that bring pleasure. The idea of detoxing ourselves from outside influences isn’t new. The ancient Taoists acknowledged the value of letting our minds rest, so we stop the exhausting maelstrom of judging, identifying, analyzing, fantasizing, et cetera. According to the Taoists, silencing our faculties for a while not only replenishes our energy, it also brings us closer to a mysterious and incomprehensible force referred to as ‘Tao’.The ‘fasting of the heart’ entails temporary abstinence from intellectual as well as sensual activity. The Dark Night of the Soul (Losing Who We Thought We Were) | Einzelgänger

The Dark Night of the Soul (Losing Who We Thought We Were) According to St. John of the Cross and Teresa of Ávila, humans have an inborn longing for completion. This completion cannot be achieved by worldly pleasures. So, instead, we must go within, to reach the inner core of our soul in which ‘the divine’ lies hidden.Through spiritual awakening, we adopt a different perception of reality. Our predicament becomes clear. Knowing that our past way of life never fills the void, while not knowing where to turn next, can leave us in despair.According to John and Teresa, we must undergo a transformation that happens in the darkness of our unconscious, to reach the light. This mysterious and confusing transitional experience is called the dark night of the soul.Cuts, voice, footage, script by Einzelgänger. How To Maximize Misery | The 4 Stoic Sins | Einzelgänger

How To Maximize Misery | The 4 Stoic Sins Virtue is the path to a happy life. One can characterize Stoic virtue by its instrumental as well as noninstrumental value, meaning that Stoics don’t act for personal gain, but rather to benefit the whole, even if this includes the rejection of pleasure and the endurance of pain. However, at the same time, this way of life leads to eudaimonia, and thus, living virtuously is rewarding for oneself as a byproduct. But what if we don’t live virtuously and what misery comes from that? In Stoic ethics, we find the opposite of virtue, which is vice. Vice can be subdivided into four elements. Obviously, following these elements will lead us astray. This video explores these 4 ‘Stoic sins’ and possible consequences.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? When Life Hurts, Stop Clinging to It | The Philosophy of Epictetus | Einzelgänger

When Life Hurts, Stop Clinging to It | The Philosophy of Epictetus Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/innerpeaceOur very sense of wellbeing is at gunpoint when we cling to the fickle, unreliable outside world. Around two thousand years ago, Stoic philosopher Epictetus observed that people are burdened and dragged down because they tend to care about too many things. His cure, however, is not to stop caring altogether but to care about the right things and stop clinging to anything that doesn’t matter. What matters and doesn’t matter according to Epictetus is bound to the reality of our place as reasonable beings in an everchanging environment. This reality Epictetus makes clear in the underlying tenet of his work: ‘the dichotomy of control.’ Some things are in our control, others not. If we manage to concern ourselves with the things in our control, we are in a position of strength. But if we neglect these things, and focus on what’s not in our control, we are in a position of weakness. Especially when we cling to what’s not up to us, we set ourselves up for a life of suffering. But what are those things that we cling to? And why is it better to let go of them? This video explores the philosophy of Epictetus, and what we, according to him, should focus on to be happy and content, and what we should let go of, and how we do this.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Nihilism: Embracing the Void of Existence | Einzelgänger

Nihilism: Embracing the Void of Existence Why are we here? What are we supposed to do? What’s the goal? What’s the meaning of all this? Without Christianity to guide us, the West now faces a void - a nothingness. If there’s no God to guide us, no Afterlife to suffer for, and no divine purpose, then what’s the point of living?Even though Nietzsche was highly critical of Christianity (seeing it as a “lifedenying” force), he acknowledged the danger of its decline: nihilism. Nihilism is the belief that nothing matters: the belief in nothing. This video explores nihilism and possible solutions by Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus.Video: Nihilism: Embracing the Void of ExistenceSupport the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? When Life Falls Apart, Does it Actually Fall Into Place? | A Buddhist Story | Einzelgänger

When Life Falls Apart, Does it Actually Fall Into Place? | A Buddhist Story When we’re hanging onto a root that’s chewed away by mice with a hungry snake below and an even hungrier tiger above us, what can we possibly do to get out of this situation? What is the best course of action when there seems to be no way out? When life falls apart, we might want to remember that everything changes all the time. Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy | The Philosophy of Cobra Kai | Einzelgänger

Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy | The Philosophy of Cobra Kai It’s not just to reignite his old passion for karate and to avenge his old nemesis Daniel LaRusso. One of the reasons why Johnny Lawrence reopens his old dojo Cobra Kai is that he believes that by doing so he can give today’s youth exactly what they need: the way of the fist. After saving his teenage neighbor Miguel from a group of bullies, Johnny realizes how soft many of today’s children actually are. This image is confirmed to him when a group of social rejects arrives at his dojo, who are desperate to toughen up, so they can awake “the snake within” and strike back at those who’ve humiliated them. Luckily, Johnny provides the recipe that does the job: the offensive, nononsense karate that he was taught as a kid, based on a simple philosophy: strike first, strike hard, no mercy.Cobra Kai represents the active, aggressive part of existence. And for many people, its philosophy is appealing, because it’s about pushing boundaries, crushing fears, and focusing on achievement and conquest; things that far exceed the dojo. As Johnny Lawrence states: “Cobra Kai isn’t just about karate. It’s about a way of life.” So, aside from physical fights, how can such a philosophy benefit our very lives? And what are the downsides and dangers of “the way of the fist?” This video explores the philosophy of Cobra Kai, and why we need balance in our lives.Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? Stop Wanting, Start Accepting | The Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius | Einzelgänger

Stop Wanting, Start Accepting | The Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): https://einzelganger.co/innerpeaceAlthough he never considered himself a philosopher, Marcus Aurelius’ writings have become one of the most significant ancient Stoic scriptures. His ‘Meditations’ contain a series of notes to himself based on Stoic ideas, one of which is embracing fate and living conformably to the demands of nature.Instead of wanting things to happen as we wish, we’re better off accepting the universe, according to Marcus Aurelius, and developing a flexible attitude towards the outside world while being strict with ourselves (Stop Wanting, Start Accepting | The Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius)Support the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits? What You Resist, Persists (The Mental Control Paradox) | Einzelgänger

What You Resist, Persists (The Mental Control Paradox) When we fall prey to the Mental Control Paradox, we experience that the more we try to control our thinking, the less successful we are in doing so. We’ve explored the experiment of the pink elephant a couple of times, showing how difficult it is not to think consciously about a pink elephant. So, when it comes to mental control, we could say: “what you resist persists.”The full video is available here: https://youtu.be/VpcQVjSVqOM#backwardslaw #reversedeffort #paradox Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5star for new episodes. The Closer We Get, The More We Hurt | The Hedgehog’s Dilemma | Einzelgänger

The Closer We Get, The More We Hurt | The Hedgehog’s Dilemma Once upon a time, a group of hedgehogs faced the cold winter. As they were feeling cold, they decided to move closer to each other and share bodily warmth. Unfortunately, as soon as they crawled together, they hurt each other with their sharp spines. And thus, the hedgehogs moved away from each other again, as the cold weather was more tolerable than being hurt by the spines. The hedgehog story (coined by Arthur Schopenhauer) shows the tragic dilemma of human relationships: due to feelings of loneliness and isolation, we seek closeness with others, but the closer we become, the more likely we seem to get hurt (and hurt others).Video: The Closer We Get, The More We Hurt | The Hedgehog’s DilemmaSupport the channel: ✔️ PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/einzelgangerco ✔️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/einzelgangster ✔️ Bitcoin: 3HQnEz1LQ4G6dqN2LdZgzc7qoJjJCyWjTC (Donated BTC and want in the credits?
