Interview - David Blacker - Physician and Patient
David talks about being both physician and patient, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "Hope is the exact ingredient that is, one of the famous, Neurologists from the Netherlands, named Bastiaan Bloem. He had a patient who talked about, we talk about dopamine replacement in Parkinson's, and Bas's patient, coined the term hopamine. If you give people hope, that really, can open up the world for them." Interview - Dave Budge - The Event Team
Dave talks about The Event Team, what it takes, what it means and how to do it. My favourite quote of the episode is " That's where the responsibility is on, you know, people that, deliver events, to make sure that, people will be talking about that experience, whether it's good or, you know, maybe they didn't achieve what they wanted to achieve in terms of goals, but they'll still be talking about it, you know, next year, in five years, in 10 years, or when they're having a beer with their mates in 30 or 40 year time." https://www.theeventteam.com.au/

Interview - Nicole Watson - parkrun Challenges
Nicole talks about parkrun challenges, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "It's like a family, with so many different people that, yeah, and they're all, they're all happy to support you and I just love going and seeing all my friends that I'll probably have never met if I hadn't not gone to parkrun. That's incredible, you show up at parkrun, and can you. Pretty much you got 300 different friends then. Yeah, that's it. Conversation And then you see them down the street and you stop and have a conversation with them. And it's like, how do you know them? Oh, from parkrun? Don't know anything about them, like history wise or whatever, they work wise, but I know they're parkrun and we can have a full on conversation because we know each other. It's, you know, they're just your other friends, so you only see them once a week, but, they're your friends."

Interview - Gabby Holt - Imperfect Painter
Gabby talks about being the Imperfect Painter, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "Lots, lots of everything. A lot of persistence. That's I think, the most important thing actually. As I'm sure any artist or any small business owner knows, it's not always steady. It goes up and down, and the downs can be very down and the ups can be very high, but you need to just keep going. So there has been many times in my Imperfect Painter life where I have wanted to give up and I've come very close to giving up. The most important thing was just to keep going. Someone told me a few years ago to push yourself just past the point that you think you can take. When you, you get to the point where you think it's unbearable, just push yourself that little bit further, and that's been a very valuable life lesson." https://www.imperfectpainter.com/

Interview - Lynette Milne - Set-up a parkrun
Lynette talks about setting up Black Swan Lake parkrun, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "I'm gonna do it this week. I'm like, oh yeah, okay, you can run. Okay. And this is the first time I'd run it officially, with like the people, the community. I'm like, oh yeah. Okay. And I remember starting up onto the path and just as I'm going round the concrete bend and all these crowds of people in front of me and I just, I remember looking going, I did that. I did this and I remember going, don't cry. Don't cry, Lynette. Don't cry. 'cause if you start crying and you're not gonna be able to breathe properly and it's gonna be a struggle, and you go and I'm like, oh, I did this, I did this. And it's just, it, even though it's really hard. It is hard work. You've gotta be willing to, they've said no to me. No, no, no. I'm, I'm ignoring you. You don't tell me I can't do it. I'm gonna do it." https://www.parkrun.com.au/blackswanlake/

Interview - Natalie Mullen - Underwater Photography
Natalie talks about being an underwater photographer, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "So I think the biggest thing, or what brings me meaning is, what we do on the surface actually has impact to the ocean and, and has serious impact. And if we don't have a Blue World, is how I would call it, a good, healthy ocean, we actually lose the green part of our land. And so the two are connected. And so things like recycling and choosing, you know, reusable items actually does matter, because of what I see under the ocean. and I wanna protect that. I wanna protect that so much because. They're so vulnerable. they can't choose a different world for themselves." https://www.instagram.com/its_a_salt_life

Kelsey talks about being Canteen Manager, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "Yeah. I mean we have so much fun in the canteen. It's not, not too serious or anything like that, you know. We're all stepping over each other 'cause it is quite a smaller canteen. But, yeah, you know, Mum and I'll come back from a race and, you know, we'll be gloating about it, and then my partner's daughter would jump in as well and going, I beat you two, and that sort of stuff. So it's good comradery in the canteen and it's really good just to check out people's times, and I find it really good. Also, because I'm in the canteen as well as racing, I can still talk to people about the racing without having to go out and about in the pit. So it's good." So you go into the meeting room and sit down and, yeah, have a, have a coffee, a cake or whatever you, and yeah. And so I just like to say if you've got something that you do that you would like to share with Paul and the Forrest.Chat listeners. Joash & Andrew talk about Soul Runners, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "It spurs them on, it gives them inspiration to keep going. It's kind of irrational in some ways that we would do something just for a little bit of metal that we are probably gonna put on a wall and we are never gonna see it again. We're not gonna do that. But the, the joy and the sense of accomplishment that children get, having a medal placed around their shoulders, I think it just makes their day. And it's just one of the things that makes Swan River Half a fantastic event for the whole family." Soul Runners website: https://www.soulrunners.net

Michelle talks about being a Silversmith, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "Which sounded to me like some kind of magical fairytale world, and when I saw the video of where it was, I, I just thought, oh, it would be like a dream come true. And it came true. I, um, was accepted to. Attend. And then I had to come up with the money to pay for the tutoring and the accommodation and you know, and plus leave my home for six months and my job and everything and still pay the bills. And so I am, I wrote for a creative development grant and I got it. Nice. Which paid for. My tuition workshop fees and my accommodation in the uk. So basically I just had to pay for airfares and food. It was amazing. I've kind of, I guess, started to go down this pathway where that's probably the more important part to me is that each day I get up and I practice being, what I would say is like, strong-minded and exercising willpower, having discipline. And I found that is a really important way to get on top of my mental health personally." https://www.tiacs.org https://trademutt.com/pages/how-a-trademutt-shirt-works

So from the 12-year-old to the, to the 75-year-old, that's incredible. I bet they had great fun with it too. They did, they did. And people make a, a day of it, you know, if, if it's a nice day as well. So the, there was one up at Beverley. It. It was a shocking weekend. It was freezing cold hail. And who doesn't wanna like, try and shoot a laser like everyone plays fortnight nowadays. So it's a great little sport for especially a high school student to, get active but also strategize and it can tie into the curriculum really well. And it's after school activity. Again, a lot of fun. So we'd love to see more people trying it." Interview - Edward Shepherd - The Dardanup Observer
Edward talks about being The Dardanup Observer, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "I want to know the truth, that that's the main guiding light for me. The truth. What is the truth? And I push towards that, and it unearths some very uncomfortable things also. I mean, truth can be, truth isn't always nice and fuzzy and warm and cuddly. Truth can be difficult. You know, I make realizations for instance, if, I mean, there's some rude truths, like if we all really cared, there'd be no homeless people. A lot of people don't like sitting with that truth, you know? if we all really cared, we could go out and I'm sure we got somewhere we can put down a bed and we could, couldn't we?"

Surely we've all had a picture of how an event's gonna be or how a meal's gonna be, or how a person's gonna be, and how disappointing is that Most of the time. If you go in with an open heart and an open mind, what comes from you needs to be respected, and if you don't like it, it's yours. You can burn it." Dianna talks about being a podcaster, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "I'm so curious about so many things, and you just cannot get all the answers by yourself. The other day. I was talking to a friend and she was talking about the noxious gases released by a lake in South Africa, or around that way, and I ended up going on a side quest for several hours researching Noxious Lakes and how they impacted communities in the area. If I didn't have that person to talk to, and this was within the Finding Elara Group, if I didn't have that person to contact, or speak to, I wouldn't have even thought of that for a world building aspect. There's just so many fascinating things you can't know by yourself." Dan talks about being a parkrun Statesman, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "And sometimes like we'll have a parkrun coffee. So at times we up to, sometimes I've had parkrun coffees that have gone for say, five hours, and you can talk a lot about parkrun in five hours, but at the same time, we all walk her away with a smile on our face. So, which is great."

Ray talks about being a musician, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "I don't play it because it's too hard for anyone in the audience that has suffered. You know, it, it deals with domestic violence. And a, a lady that worked for me in the early days told me her story, the next day I wrote her song and I wrote her story. And I always say to people, be careful what you tell me, because I can't help it. I might, you know, somehow inadvertently in a third person tell your story. And that song is powerful, but so much so that I don't wanna make people cry, you know, in just what I, and it's very subtle. It's. When I say powerful, it's subtle, but it says enough for, and I, I have seen people in audiences hang their heads during that song. So yeah, I just don't do that anymore. I like, I like to make people happy." https://www.facebook.com/rayjoneslivemusic

One is a desire to collect things. One is a desire for physical activity where you are playing and doing something, and one is a desire for social activity. Now, I don't know whether you get that much playing or physical activity or winning with scale modeling. But you do get the competitiveness of winning at a exhibition if you get that. And all of those four things are very well catered for in scale modeling. You are building. All right, I'm collecting, I've got 200 to 300 scale model airplanes. I don't go into the competitions, but I do appreciate people do enjoy those competitions like that and the social part of it. Well, like I say, three times a week and away you go. You've never done this before, and you are setting goals to do longer skates, and you are meeting them, and that's absolutely wonderful. So I get inspired by the things that other people achieve. Just see if you've got time. You don't have to spend a lot of time, just a little bit of time every day. And, it's just like coloring in by just painting. And it was really making the change, from putting focus on the financial aspect or looking at everything as what's gonna create some money, to, what's actually gonna build real wealth. I just, yeah, I was just so happy to be up there and so glad that my training had got me this far and that I could feel good. And sometimes I think that I feel better up high in altitude on the mountain than what I do in day-to-day life just dealing with general MS stuff and all of that. My favourite quote of the episode is "They might be doing a parkrun, they might want to get up to a 10 K or, it might be for a real good cause. It might just be something that they, you know, wanna kick off that they've been thinking about for a long period of time. So I think everyone has their own reasons to do events. But I know personally that me putting on these events means a lot to people."

Interview - Sugi Kossen - Library Officer
Sugi talks about being a Library Officer, what it takes, what it means and how to do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "My mother tongue is Tamil. 'cause I was born in Sri Lanka and there was another language in Sri Lanka. We had to learn Sinhalese. So my dad said, no, you had to learn that language and both languages and English. We have to learn English. So he made us study English all the time. And so he would tell us, because I'm from a church back Christian background, so he said, alright, you learn Tamil at home in your Tamil Bible, go to the English Sunday school. So learn from that. So I had to go one, two, I think as a kid I would've said, oh, why is he doing that? But now I appreciate because I can understand. And then he would take us to the British Council Library, and then the public library of Sri Lanka. And then there was so many libraries we had. Russian libraries and we had Chinese library, all the libraries, possible he would take us every Saturday, once a month. So we had books like that and you know, he'd come home and we could read and he, he introduced. I really thank, I'm very grateful for my dad. He did that. And all my fam siblings say that, you know? And uh, yeah. When I think of him, I think, I mean, as a young person, I may not have appreciated all what he did, but now I really appreciate what he has done because I could pass that to my kids and I see that with my kids."

Interview - Paul van der Mey - One Year of Podcasting
Paul talks about one year of Forrest.Chat podcasting, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "There's a balance between the skills and experience that the person has and what they do and often what they've done in the past and the skills they've learned make it easier for them to, to do something. And knowing that you actually have a particular set of skills that you have built up and experiences that you've had that allows you to get on and and do the things that you do as well. And if that gets lost, or missed, in somebody's formation of their thinking, then they'll think that they can't do anything, they're not good enough, or whatever. But all it really means is that they need to find something that will harness what they are able to do and they'll be able to get on and do it. And it'll be far easier for them than than they expect."

Interview - Chloe Jean Vincent - Actor
Chloe talks about beng an actor, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of this episode is "I guess in sharing my story, I can encourage young people to dream big and pursue their passions. I don't feel society encourages that enough, but it's about creating a ripple effect. When one person rises, they can lift others along the way."

Interview - Abdul-Raouf Mohamed-Isa - Basketball Referee
Abdul talks about being a basketball referee, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "One thing from memory, I can remember, which has helped me in life as well. What I used to do, I didn't think about it, but when they explained it to me, I would subconsciously, depending on who my co-official was, I would, if they were less experienced, I'd actually drop my standard to kind of match theirs rather than staying where I was and making them, I guess, come up to my level. Which helped me as well in life rather than, so kind of keeping myself where I need to be rather than lowering. So when I refereed with people that were higher than me, I would actually step up my game to match theirs. And that's helped me in life and work in that where I, I try to stay true to myself rather than switching to someone else's standards."

Interview - Sasha Wasley - Author
Sasha talks about being an author, what it takes, what it means and how to do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "Well, to me it means the achievement of a lifelong dream, because when I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer, but I didn't think that it was possible. It was on the same level to me as becoming a movie star. So I thought the likelihood of it was very low. I thought that perhaps one day I might get a book published, but I would have to continue having another job. So to now be a full-time author is, it's magical. It's, I'm living my dream and I get to get up every day and do exactly what I wanna do. I'm not saying it's not hard and that there's some parts of it that I don't enjoy doing, But, I get to go out and say I'm an author, when people ask me what I do for a living."

Interview - Alex Smith - Head of Year
Alex talks about being head of year, what it takes, what it means and how you do it. My favourite quote of this episode is "And that's one of the interesting things about teaching. You seldom, if ever, know you've made the impact. But every now and then you get these little moments and they're gold. They're absolute gold. I've had a number of interactions with students who have graduated, and I had in my classes, you know, sort of 10 years down the track. Last year I actually had a wonderful experience where I bumped into a previous student of mine, and he went out of his way to thank me for how I taught him and how I really resonated with him. And so he gave me some great feedback on the sort of teacher that I was. And, um, yeah, that was, that was amazing. And it's, it's lovely to know that you have had a positive impact on, on the lives of people." https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-smith-506234180

Interview - Michelle Scarrott - Astrologer
Michelle talks about being an astrologer, what it takes, what it means and how to do it. My favourite quote of the episode is "And the thing is that people think that's luck. I don't believe in luck. Luck, it means that you're not connected, that it's random and arbitrary and you didn't deserve it, or you haven't worked towards it, or you haven't made changes in your life to set up. Um, I don't believe in that. I believe that we do or we don't do, but there are consequences in both directions. And so this is, like I said, optimizing what you have. It's kind of cashing in on your experience and on yourself and who you are and what you bring to the table. And also giving yourself an opportunity to heal roadblocks, to recognise what they are, to see where they came from, how did you learn that, and um, get out of your own way."
