Laura Phillips, Founder of We Get It: Cancer Diagnosis, Resilience and Community

In this episode of Good Journeys, Ben Veal and Sarah Moon speak with Laura Phillips, founder of We Get It, a purpose-driven charity built from one simple but powerful belief: no one should have to go through cancer feeling alone. After experiencing cancer herself, Laura saw just how isolating the journey can be, not only during treatment but in everything that comes after: the conversations that don’t happen, the identity shifts no one prepares you for and the quiet moments where life feels different and hard to explain. So she created a space where people could talk honestly about all of it.Today, We Get It is a growing community where people living with cancer and beyond can show up exactly as they are. Whether it’s a weekly meet-up, sharing a curry, attending events or simply chatting over coffee, the purpose of We Get It is not to try to fix everything. It’s simply to help people to feel understood.Laura Phillips leads the charity alongside a passionate team who believe that while cancer may be part of your story, it doesn’t have to define it. Straight-talking, warm and refreshingly real, Laura is on a mission to create spaces where people can laugh, connect and feel like themselves again. In this conversation, we explore:• Laura’s life before cancer and how everything changed following her diagnosis in 2016• The reality of her cancer journey and what treatment really felt like day-to-day• Life after treatment and the hidden challenges of that stage• The moment she realised how many others felt the same isolation• How We Get It grew from an idea into a thriving charity and community• What it means when someone walks through the door and feels understood• What the next chapter of Laura’s journey looks like.
