The 2026 Tax Change Every Grant Writer Should Know About
The 2026 tax change quietly handed nonprofits a fundraising gift, and most of them have no idea. No tax degree required. In this episode:The new rule that lets everyday donors get a tax break for giving again (and why it's permanent this time)Who this really helps: small nonprofits and the everyday donors they run onWho barely notices (spoiler: the super rich) and who actually feels the pinch (the middle)What the big nonprofit groups say: the National Council of Nonprofits, Independent Sector, and others fought for the everyday-donor break, but warn the full package could be a net negative for givingThe Council Corner: the real question isn't "good or bad," it's "who's going to use it"The simple steps to bring this to your clients without sounding like a tax advisorQuick reminder: this episode is for learning, not tax advice. The Fear Never Fully Goes Away, Even After Six Figures (What 12 Years in Business Taught Me)
What if the thing standing between you and a thriving freelance grant writing business isn't lack of experience, but fear?In this deeply personal bonus episode, Holly Rustick pulls back the curtain on her 21-year journey from teaching overseas and volunteering in post-tsunami Indonesia to building a successful freelance grant writing business that provides both financial freedom and meaningful impact. Along the way, she shares the struggles most people never see: living paycheck-to-paycheck, being a single mom on WIC, battling burnout, undercharging clients, and questioning whether she was capable of building something of her own.If you've ever thought: "I don't have enough experience." "Who would hire me?" "I'm not good at sales." "What if I fail?" "Maybe I'm not cut out for entrepreneurship." Episode Gems💎 Fear doesn't disappear when you become successful. Even six-figure business owners and seasoned professionals still face imposter syndrome and self-doubt.💎 You don't need experience in everything to get started. It's possible to create meaningful impact while building financial security.💎 Burnout is often information. Sometimes exhaustion and frustration are signs that something in your life or career needs to change.💎 Perfecting your writing won't build your business. Learning sales, pricing, positioning, and client acquisition often creates bigger breakthroughs than improving technical skills alone.💎 Freelancing can offer more stability than a traditional job. Multiple clients often create less risk than depending on a single employer or funding source.💎 Undercharging doesn't serve anyone. Confidence in your value is a critical part of building a sustainable business.💎 You don't need a perfect website, logo, or brand to get clients. Conversations and relationships matter more than endless preparation.💎 Your current circumstances do not determine your future. Holly's journey from financial struggle to building a business she loves proves what's possible with the right skills and support.💎 The business side is learnable. The OMB Proposal: What Grant Writers Actually Need to Know Before July 13
The headlines about federal grants this week are a lot — and most of them are missing the most important detail: the OMB proposal is not a law. It is not final. It is a proposal, and you have until July 13, 2026 to weigh in on it.In this episode, Holly breaks down what the White House Office of Management and Budget actually published on May 29th, what it would change about how federal grants are reviewed, awarded, and terminated, and, just as importantly, what it would NOT change yet. Holly also shares two new sections in the proposal the news isn't covering, why this issue goes beyond politics, and what it means for the communities your clients serve every day. You'll also hear why the language changes in federal grants (trigger words, DEI screening) are already in effect under earlier executive orders, and why that's a separate and current issue from the structural overhaul being proposed now.Take Action Before July 13#1 — Submit a Public Comment to the OMBGo to regulations.gov and search for docket OMB-2026-0034.Start your comment with the section number in brackets — for example [200.340] for the termination section. That formatting step makes your comment more likely to be taken seriously.Copy and adapt this template:[200.340]My name is [NAME] and I work as a [grant writer / executive director / program manager] for [ORGANIZATION NAME], a nonprofit serving [COMMUNITY/POPULATION] in [CITY, STATE].The Uniform Guidance provides the common framework governing how federal grants are applied for, awarded, and administered. The proposed overhaul could significantly disrupt the ability of nonprofits like ours to apply for and manage federal funding — funding that directly supports [housing / health services / education / disaster recovery / INSERT YOUR PROGRAM AREA] for the people and communities we serve every day.Changes to how grants are reviewed and awarded, new authority to terminate active grants, and sweeping simultaneous changes across all federal agencies create significant uncertainty for organizations that have built programs and hired staff in good faith around existing federal commitments. If these disruptions occur, it is not nonprofits that bear the cost — it is the children, seniors, veterans, and families who rely on the services we provide.I urge OMB to carefully consider the real-world impact of these proposed changes on nonprofits and the communities they serve before moving forward.Submit your comment here: regulations.gov — search docket OMB-2026-0034#2 — Email Your Member of CongressFind your representative at house.gov or senate.gov by entering your zip code.Copy and adapt this template:Dear [REPRESENTATIVE'S NAME],My name is [NAME] and I work as a [grant writer / executive director / program manager] for [ORGANIZATION NAME], a nonprofit serving [COMMUNITY/POPULATION] in [CITY, STATE].The Uniform Guidance provides the common framework governing how federal grants are applied for, awarded, and administered. The OMB's proposed overhaul could significantly disrupt the ability of nonprofits to apply for and manage federal funding — funding that directly supports housing, health services, education, disaster recovery, veterans, and community services for the people we serve every day.The proposed changes would give political appointees the power to override independent grant review, allow active grants to be terminated mid-program, and impose sweeping simultaneous changes across all federal agencies — creating enormous uncertainty for organizations that have built programs and hired staff in good faith around existing federal commitments. If these disruptions occur, it is not nonprofits that bear the cost. It is the children, seniors, veterans, and families who rely on the services we provide.I also want to note that this rule, if passed, does not belong to one administration. It becomes permanent structure that any future administration can use to screen federal grants for political alignment — regardless of party. Federal grants should be awarded based on the merit of the work, not on who holds political office. That is a principle worth protecting for everyone.I urge you to use your oversight authority to scrutinize this proposal and protect the integrity of federal grantmaking for the nonprofits and communities that depend on it.Warmly, [YOUR NAME AND TITLE]Find your representative: house.gov or senate.govResources Mentioned in This EpisodeSubmit a public comment (deadline July 13, 2026): regulations.gov — search docket OMB-2026-0034Free Banned and Trigger Words Guide + Replacement Checklist (for federal grant language already in effect under current executive orders): grantwritingandfunding.com/banned-and-trigger-words-in-federal-grant-writing-in-the-trump-administration-2-0Freelance Grant Writer Academy: grantwritingandfunding.com/freelance-grant-writer-academyConnect with HollyWebsite: grantwritingandfunding.com Instagram: @hollyrustick LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/holly-rustick-0765b817 Podcast: Grant Writing & Funding — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and everywhere you listenRESOURCES:Weekly Newsletter: “Write Grants. What Separates a $50K Grant Writer From a $150K Grant Business Owner
In this episode of the Grant Writing & Funding Podcast, Holly Rustick breaks down a key shift that separates grant writers earning around $50K per year from those building six-figure grant businesses.Interestingly, the difference isn’t talent, experience, or even how hard someone works. Many grant writers have similar technical skills:strong proposal writing, program design knowledge, and a passion for supporting nonprofit missions. The real difference lies in how their work is structured as a business.Holly walks through four major shifts that occur when a grant writer moves from freelancer to grant business owner. From moving beyond hourly pricing to building systems, support teams, and diversified income streams, these changes allow grant professionals to scale their impact and income without burning out.If you’ve ever wondered how some grant writers grow sustainable six-figure businesses while others stay stuck in reactive client work, this episode will show you exactly where that shift happens—and how you can start thinking like a grant business owner.ABOUT HOLLY RUSTICKGrant Writing & Funding (GWF) has a Global Movement to Secure $1 Billion in Grant Funding for Good and $30 Million in Grant Writing Businesses by 2030. Why “Stable” Jobs Don’t Feel Safe Anymore
Why “Stable” Jobs Don’t Feel Safe AnymoreIn uncertain times, many “stable” jobs don’t feel so stable anymore. In this episode, Holly Rustick, CEO of the Freelance Grant Writer Academy, unpacks the illusion of fixed income and why relying on a single employer, whether in nonprofits, government, or corporate roles, can create a false sense of security. As costs rise and economic conditions shift, salaries often fail to keep pace, leaving many people quietly stressed, overworked, and afraid to speak up or make changes.Drawing from her personal story of leaving a toxic nonprofit grant writing role as a single mom, and her experience teaching over 1,000 grant writers how to build flexible income, Holly explains why skill-based, flexible income offers more control, stability, and peace of mind than traditional employment. She also explores why this conversation matters deeply for women and parents, especially in an industry where 82% of freelance grant writers are female. This episode reframes financial security away from job titles and toward self-reliance, adaptable skills, and income you control: even during volatile times. In this episode, you’ll learn:Why “stable” jobs can create hidden financial stressHow fixed income fails to keep up with rising costs of livingWhat flexible, skill-based income really looks likeWhy women and parents benefit most from income flexibilityHow redefining stability can change your work, health, and family lifeWhether you’re in a 9–5, freelancing on the side, or thinking about a bigger change, this episode will help you rethink what real stability means — and how to build it on your own terms.ABOUT HOLLY RUSTICKGrant Writing & Funding (GWF) has a Global Movement to Secure $1 Billion in Grant Funding for Good and $30 Million in Grant Writing Businesses by 2030.
