Todos tenemos personas que nos marcan de una manera u otra. Pueden ser hermanos, padres, abuelos, amigos…Y, de vez en cuando, aparece alguien que no solo deja huella en quienes le conocen, sino en generaciones enteras. Personas que tienen algo especial. No sé si es la actitud, la pasión con la que viven o esa curiosidad insaciable por el mundo.En el episodio de hoy te cuento la historia de uno de esos hombres.Un enamorado de los libros, la historia, el deporte, la ciencia y la aventura.En realidad, estaba enamorado de la VIDA, así, en mayúsculas. I don't know if it's their attitude, the passion with which they live, or that insatiable curiosity about the world.In today's episode, I'll tell you the story of one of those men. A lover of books, history, sports, science, and adventure.Actually, he was in love with LIFE, in all its capital letters. And he shared that energy with everyone who was lucky enough to cross paths with him. He lived a life straight out of a movie: he won an Olympic medal (although it was later taken away), was sentenced to death in the Congo, met Gandhi, Pablo Neruda, the Dalai Lama, Salvador Allende, and Fidel Castro… and for almost 40 years he traveled the world with thousands of teenagers in a kind of rite of passage that encouraged us to look further, be braver, and better understand the world. This May marked the 10th anniversary of his death, and I wanted to pay my small tribute by telling his story. I'll soon be presenting a new program I'm working on so you too can confidently tell stories using different past tenses 😉, Register on my website if you want to receive all the information. Dreaming is like "nighttime therapy", and I personally find it fascinating. That's why, when one of my students told me last year, during the language immersion program in Ronda, that she "even dreamed in Spanish", I was incredibly excited. It meant that her Spanish was moving from short-term memory to the subconscious. We still don't know much about what happens in the brain at night, although there are more and more studies. Hay una serie de palabras que el 90% de mis alumnos usan mal. Algunas de ellas son "falsos amigos", esas palabras que en tu idioma son muy similares, pero que en español tienen un significado muy diferente. Seguro que sabes de qué te hablo, ¿verdad? Algunas de estas palabras te sonarán mucho, y otras quizás no tanto. La cuestión es que hasta que no empiezas a utilizarlas, no eres consciente de que las usas mal. Y muchas veces, muchas, la persona que te escucha te entiende, y entonces no te corrige. Por eso las clases de conversación funcionan tan bien. Porque practicas, disfrutas del proceso y casi sin darte cuenta tu español va mejorando. A veces, mis alumnos no son conscientes de lo mucho que mejoran. Yo voy tomando notas de cada clase, y puedo ver cada mes la evolución. A veces muy evidente, otras muy sutil, pero siempre está. I'm sure you know what I mean. Some of these words will sound familiar, and others perhaps not so much. The point is that you don't realize you're using them incorrectly until you start using them. Often, the person listening understands you and doesn't correct you. That's why conversation classes are so effective. You practise, enjoy the process and, almost without realizing it, your Spanish improves. Sometimes my students aren't even aware of how much they're improving. I take notes in every class and can therefore see their progress each month. Sometimes it's obvious and other times it's more subtle, but it's always there. Before we start the new episode, I wanted to inform you that we are already preparing the INTENSIVE SUMMER COURSES. Online and in person. When I was a child, I loved Agatha Christie novels. The crimes where the murderer seemed obvious, but where Detective Poirot always showed that appearances can be deceiving. But as I grew up, I became less and less interested in detective stories. And in general the news about crimes etc... are not very interesting to me. They go unnoticed by me. But it's difficult not to pay attention when something is happening and it's everywhere, in the news, in the magazines, on television....as we say in Spanish "está hasta en la sopa", the literal translation would be "it's even in the soup", and we use it to refer it's everywhere. It's impossible not to see it. If you live in Spain, you probably know what I'm talking about; if not, I'll tell you in the podcast episode. A crime in which reality surpasses fiction. Si vives en España sabrás de qué hablo, sino, te lo cuento en este episodio del Podcast. Un crimen donde la realidad supera la ficción. And speaking is something natural, spontaneous, you don't need grammatical structure. Today I still think that the final goal is SPEAK. But I am aware that there are many different ways to learn.  I teach adults (with children is different), most of them know the grammar of their languages and sometimes, if they can compare it with Spanish grammar, it helps them to see it with more clarity. Makes the way easier. After more than 7 years of teaching Spanish, I've learned to be less rigid and more flexible. Through this podcast, in addition to learn Spanish, I would like to introduce you to some of the most important figures in Spanish history. One of them, without a doubt, is Cristobal Balenciaga. To be honest, I didn't know much about him until recently. A few days ago, when I was looking for a new series to watch with my husband, Disney + recommended this one: Cristobal Balenciaga. I loved it and I'll tell you why: The photography is beautiful. Sometimes reminiscent of Popper's work. Tells the story of a character unknown to many. I knew the brand, of course, but I didn't know the story of the man, and I found it fascinating. You can see many of his designs in the series. They are real works of art. The actor has been a surprise for me. Alberto SanJuan is well known in Spain for doing comedy, but this is the first time I have seen him in a more serious role, and I was very surprised at how good an actor he is. He had to learn French and Euskera!  Sometimes my students ask me to recommend Spanish series. Of course I recommend this one, but you have to know that it's recorded in 3 languages: Spanish, French and Euskera.  Balenciaga was born and raised in the north of Spain, in the Basque Country, where Basque is spoken alongside Spanish. It's one of the five co-official languages in Spain. He lived for a long time in Paris, where he became the king of haute couture. Coco Chanel and Christian Dior considered him a great master. If you want to practise your Spanish and learn more about this artist, this episode is for you. Alberto SanJuan es muy conocido en España por hacer comedia, es la primera vez que le veo hacer un papel más serio, y me ha sorprendido mucho lo buen actor que es. ¡Ha tenido que aprender francés y vasco!  Muchas veces mis alumnos me piden recomendaciones de series para ver en español. Esta sin duda la recomiendo, aunque tenéis que saber que en la serie se hablan 3 idiomas: El español, el francés y el euskera. Balenciaga nació y creció en el norte de España, en el Pais Vasco, donde además del español se habla también el euskera o vasco. Una de las 5 lenguas cooficiales que hay en nuestro país. Vivió durante años en París, donde se convirtió en el rey de la alta costura. Coco Chanel y Cristian Dior le consideraban el gran maestro. Today is Maundy Thursday. I think Spain is one of the countries where Easter is more deeply rooted. In any city in Spain you can see many processions throughout the week and you can find "torrijas" in all the bakeries. Last year I told you about the difference between Easter in the north and in the south of Spain in an episode of the podcast, so today I want to tell you some curiosities that you might not know; why they dress like that, or the origin of this type of dessert. It's all part of Spanish culture and I think it's very interesting. Hoy es Jueves Santo. Creo que España es uno de los países donde más arraigada está la Semana Santa. A few years ago, when I was in the park with my daughter, I met Maria and her mother. I'm remembering her today because it's International Day for Rare Diseases, and María was the first girl I met with Rett syndrome, a rare degenerative disease that affects movement and speech and affects mainly girls. I know it can be a sad subject, but I think it's important to make it visible and raise awareness. Today in the podcast I tell you Maria's story. I hope you like it and find it interesting. Yesterday was Valentine's Day. In Spain, it's something commercial, more than anything else... and it's not very common to celebrate it. I have never done anything special with my husband on Valentine's Day. We celebrate our wedding anniversary or the day we met, but never Valentine's Day.  But the culture, the art, the language... In Spain you can find a thousand romantic stories. For example, there is an "expression", a phrase we use when we want to laugh at those stormy, always lovesick couples... When we want to refer to someone like that and make a joke, we say: "The lovers from Teruel". Teruel is a small city in the east of Spain, in Aragón. This expression: "Los amantes de Teruel, tonta ella tonto él" comes from the Middle Ages and is still sometimes used. Today, in the new episode of the podcast, I will explain to you who they were and what happened. It's a very romantic story. La verdad es que en España es una fiesta más comercial que otra cosa y tradicionalmente no se celebra.  Nunca he hecho nada especial por San Valentín con mi marido, celebramos nuestro aniversario de bodas, o el día que nos conocimos, pero no San Valentín. Sin embargo, en la cultura, el arte, el idioma... en España, puedes encontrar cientos de historias románticas. Por ejemplo, hay una "expresión", un dicho, que se utiliza como burla para reírse de esas parejas que siempre tienen "mal de amores", que son tormentosas, etc... Cuando nos encontramos una pareja así, y queremos burlarnos de ellos, les llamamos: "Los amantes de Teruel". Teruel es una pequeña provincia al este de España, de la comunidad de Aragón. El caso es que esa expresión: "Los amantes de Teruel, tonta ella y tonto él", viene de la edad Media, y todavía a veces la puedes escuchar.
