Show Up Anyway: What to Do When You Feel Like You Don't Belong

Ep65: Show Up Anyway: What to Do When You Feel Like You Don't BelongHardcore and At Ease - powered by Others Over Self®Mitze Alexander's first supervisor told her women didn't belong in the military. She had no barracks, no female support, and no one to tell, and she knows what it's like to feel like you don't belong somewhere you know you're supposed to be. She stayed anyway, and built a twenty-year career to prove him wrong.Episode DescriptionMitze Alexander knows what it feels like to walk into a room that's already decided you don't belong there. At her first duty station, an all-male aviation unit in Korea with no barracks and no female support, her supervisor told her outright that women didn't belong in the military. She stayed anyway. That decision sits underneath everything she's built since: twenty years in the U.S. Army and Michigan Army National Guard, seven years as a Muskegon patrol officer, and, for close to two decades now, a licensed trauma therapist specializing in PTSD, depression, and anxiety with military women. Host Shelly Rood and Mitze connected through Mission Ambition's second location in West Michigan, which provides tailored support to veterans across Muskegon County and the surrounding area.In this episode, Mitze talks through what it actually takes to stay somewhere you've been told you shouldn't be, what that moment still demands of her to this day, and what she'd tell a woman living through the same thing right now.Chapters00:00 Carrying Others’ Weight03:47 Meet Mitzi Alexander05:45 Private Practice Realities10:21 Military Woman’s Journey25:26 National Guard Growth27:12 From Policing to Social Work34:11 Therapy Fit and Boundaries45:12 Closing Reframe and ChallengeIn This Episode You'll DiscoverWhy absorbing third-party trauma for a living requires real, enforced boundaries, not just good intentionsHow the old operating system of "if I can hold it, I should" differs from Lived Authority's "I can hold it, and I still decide when I put it down"What it took for a first-time enlistee to walk into an all-male unit with no barracks, no female support, and a supervisor who told her she didn't belongWhy Mitze left law enforcement to work in social work and clinical therapy insteadA concrete, repeatable way to release the weight of a hard day without waiting for it to pile upFeatured GuestMitze Alexander is a licensed therapist based in Muskegon, Michigan, specializing in trauma, PTSD, depression, and anxiety, with a focus on military women. How to Become a Lived Authority Without Anyone's Permission

Ep64: How to Become a Lived Authority Without Anyone's Permission | Hardcore and At Ease - powered by Others Over Self®Episode DescriptionHow does someone become a lived authority without anyone else's permission? Right now, someone with real judgment, earned the hard way, is waiting for a stranger to say it's allowed before they act on it. In this solo teaching episode, Shelly Rood explains why the ten thousand hour rule and formal certification were never built to answer that question, and what it actually takes to claim self-directed decision-making over your own life. Drawing from her own path to military chaplaincy, her time in the fitness industry, and stories from Category Pirates co-founder Christopher Lochhead and retirement coach Markham Rollins, Shelly names the exact moment lived experience turns into lived authority.Chapters00:00 Question of the Day 14:21 Defining Lived Authority 14:21 Owning Your Experience 14:21 Self Direction 14:21 No External Certification 14:21 Trusting Your Inner Compass 14:21 Closing TakeawayIn This Episode You'll DiscoverWhy the ten thousand hour rule was never built to measure authority over your own lifeThe difference between being qualified and being fit, and why lived authority requires bothHow self-directed decision-making replaces waiting for someone else's permissionWhat shifts once you stop outsourcing your judgment to people who haven't lived your lifeMentioned in This EpisodeChristopher Lochhead, co-founder of Category Pirates and host of Follow Your DifferentMarkham Rollins, retirement and identity coach, Retirement TransformedResources & LinksLived Authority: Defining a New Construct for Self-Directed Decision-Making (the clinical companion article): https://othersoverself.com/learn/lived-authority-defining-a-new-construct-for-self-directed-decision-making/The original Lived Authority Substack piece, "Lived Authority: The Permission We Keep Waiting for Someone Else to Give Us": https://missionwildflower.com/p/lived-authority-the-permission-weCategory Pirates mini book, "Podcast Category Design: 6 Principles and 6 Donkey Traps to Turn Trapped Wisdom Into Digital Treasure"Outliers by Malcolm GladwellWildflower Assessment for Women Veterans: https://othersoverself.shop/products/wildflower-assessment-for-women-veteransFrequently Asked QuestionsWhat does it mean to be a lived authority? It means recognizing your own accumulated experience as legitimate authority for directing your own life, without needing someone else to keep certifying it.How is lived authority different from confidence? Confidence is believing you can do something. Lived authority is about who holds the pen on your own life, not how capable you feel holding it. The distinction is between lived experience, which is why people want to hear from you, and lived authority, which is choosing not to hand your judgment about your own life to someone who hasn't lived it.What is the ten thousand hour rule, and why doesn't it answer this question? The ten thousand hour rule comes from Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, built off research on elite violinists. It measures mastery of a skill through hours of deep, focused practice. It was never built to measure something else: a person's own judgment over their own life. What does it mean to be "qualified and fit" as a lived authority? Qualified means you lived it, not read about it or watched a video on it. Fit means you're the right person, in the right moment, for the room in front of you. Both have to be true at the same time for the claim to hold.Does lived authority mean credentials don't matter? No. The episode doesn't argue that licenses, degrees, or certifications should disappear, they matter for a surgeon, for example. It argues that a lot of the most consequential work in life, parenting, entrepreneurship, guiding someone through grief, happens with no third party ever signing off on it at all. This is about human systems and credentialing bodies specifically. It has nothing to do with spiritual authority, which operates on its own terms and isn't something this episode claims to replace or diminish.Subscribe & Connect Keep the conversation going at join.othersoverself.com. Michigan's Defense Leadership, From Two Different Chairs

Ep63: Michigan's Defense Leadership, From Two Different Chairs | Hardcore and At Ease - powered by Others Over Self®Michigan's defense leadership doesn't come from one seat. This week you'll hear host Shelly Rood interview two entirely different chairs, and uncover what holds both of them up when nobody's checking the work anymore. This episode is dedicated to Julie Fathbruckner, a founding member of Women in Defense who spent years working alongside AUSA and NDIA on behalf of Michigan's defense community. She will be deeply missed.Episode DescriptionScott Davis, President of NDIA Michigan, the National Defense Industrial Association's Michigan chapter, spent 30 years in the U.S. military including time as a Army Reserve officer and a program executive officer at the Detroit Arsenal before leading BAE Systems' combat vehicle division. He talks candidly about the two-billion-dollar-a-year funding shift threatening Michigan's ground vehicle industrial base, and why the instincts he built in uniform are the same ones guiding NDIA's advocacy today.Chuck Cogger, Chapter President of the Arsenal of Democracy Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, AUSA, spent 23 years of active duty as a field artillery officer. He shares how the planning discipline he built in the military now runs an all-volunteer chapter of over 1,600 members, and why leading through trust instead of rank has made Michigan's AUSA chapter a model the national organization points to.Two different roles, two different organizations, and the same underlying thread: judgment built while earning a title doesn't expire the day the title does. What Advancement Demands of the Person Leading It

Episode 59 - "What Advancement Demands of the Person Leading It," with guest Stacey EemanSound familiar? You're pushing your whole team forward in manufacturing, aerospace, or any high-pressure industry, and somewhere along the way you've quietly decided one of them is never going to catch up.On this episode of Hardcore and At Ease, host Shelly Rood sits down with Stacey Eeman, Director, Industry Strategy at SME, for a conversation about leadership, change management, and technology adoption inside one of the most demanding industries in the country: aerospace and defense manufacturing. This episode continues Season 2's look at the unwinnable situations leaders are still inside, not the ones they've already solved. Advancing anything, a team, a company, an entire manufacturing industry, never happens on one single timeline, and sometimes that means leaving someone behind, whether it's said out loud or not.Listeners will hear the real numbers Stacey uses to describe who adapts, who struggles, and who simply doesn't come along, and why she refuses to let any of it turn her hard. The conversation also covers how a commercial pickup truck platform became a U.S. Army vehicle, and one small, specific move any leader can make this week with the person whose pace has been testing their patience most.ABOUT YOUR HOST Shelly Rood is the host of Hardcore and At Ease and co-host of Veterans Radio. Friendship and Leadership Are Not the Same Thing

Ep58, Friendship and Leadership Are Not the Same ThingYou can lead a team through anything. Run a program with a hundred moving parts. So why does female friendship keep being the terrain you get wrong?Episode DescriptionLeadership and friendship are not the same skill, and for most of her adult life, host Shelly Rood confused the two. In this solo episode, she names two women veteran friendships that ended in recent years, the wilderness underneath both, and what she's still learning about presence, agency, and boundaries. This isn't a story about failure. Both women knew what they wanted from the relationship, and both had the courage to act on it. Shelly walks through the difference between a friendship running on a rhythm mismatch, two women built for different paces who are both still fully in, and one that's become imbalanced, where one woman is doing all the giving. You'll leave with a question to sit with, not a tidy answer, and permission to pause a friendship if you're standing in your own wilderness right now. This episode connects directly to Chapter 12 of The Wilderness and the Wildflower: Naming the Language of Women Veterans, "The Long Campaign," and sets up next episode's harder conversation: when it's time for a boundary instead of patience. In This Episode You'll DiscoverWhy leadership skill doesn't automatically transfer to friendship skill, and how that misunderstanding shapes women veterans' relationshipsThe difference between a rhythm mismatch and an imbalance, and the one question to ask before you assume eitherWhy peer groups exist to help you find friends beyond the person who led you there, and what that means for Be At Ease, Woman Veteran™Permission to pause a friendship when you're navigating your own wilderness, without assigning malice to the woman on the other side of itChatpers00:00 Leadership vs Friendship02:39 Honoring a Listener03:33 Nancy Dakin's "The Quietest Flight"05:25 Story One The Silence09:05 Story Two The Grief5:08 Reframe and Next StepsFeatured StoryNancy Dakin, retired Air Force Colonel, Mission Ambition FCOO, and 3,000+ flight hours across three weapons systems, shares "The Quietest Flight," publishing this Sunday, August 2, 2026, on Mission Wildflower 🌻. Drownproof: Eight Life Lessons to Keep Your Head Above Water

EP55: Drownproof: Eight Life Lessons to Keep Your Head Above WaterYou've built your whole identity around what you accomplish, and it worked, until the day it didn't. This week, host Shelly Rood sits down a fellow Veteran - a retired Navy SEAL - who says the strongest people he's ever known are the first ones to ask for help, and who's still working out what it costs when you don't.Andy Stumpf spent seventeen years as a Navy SEAL, six of those on SEAL Team Six. In February 2005, an insurgent shot him at close range on a deployment in Iraq, doctors weren't sure he'd walk the same again. He came back, and later set two world records skydiving from 36,500 feet to raise $750,000 for the Navy SEAL Foundation. His book, "Drownproof: Eight Life Lessons to Keep Your Head Above Water," is a New York Times bestseller with a foreword from Jocko Willink. In this conversation, Andy talks candidly about why asking for help gets treated as weakness in high-performance cultures when it's actually the opposite, why money is a tool to say no rather than a way to acquire things, and what his own career cost his marriage and his kids the first time around. We also get into a live, unresolved question: what happens when the label you've earned starts doing more work for your identity than you want it to.Chapters00:00 Show Intro and Teaser01:18 Season One Finale Setup01:52 Meet Andy Stumpf04:08 Montana Life and Big Sky04:54 Spirituality and Saying I Dont Know07:23 Podcast Questions and Relationship Themes09:50 Entrepreneurial Path and Coffee Shop13:00 Money as a Tool to Say No14:53 Drown Proof and Identity Beyond SEAL17:24 Asking for Help and Alcohol Culture21:41 Competition Social Media and Jujitsu35:50 Final Advice and Host Closing ReflectionsKey TopicsWhy the most capable people ask for help first, not lastReframing money as a tool to say no, not a way to acquire thingsThe real cost of chasing danger and delaying what matters mostBeing more than the label you've earned, even one you're proud ofGuestAndy Stumpf, retired Navy SEAL (SEAL Team Six), New York Times bestselling author of Drownproof: Eight Life Lessons to Keep Your Head Above Water, host of Cleared Hot.ResourcesGrab Drownproof: Eight Life Lessons to Keep Your Head Above Water at your favorite bookstoreGo deeper into Andy's point of view: andystumpf.comConnect with Hardcore and At EaseJoin the community: join.othersoverself.comTake the Wildflower Assessment for Women Veterans: othersoverself.shopBe At Ease Woman Veteran gatherings: womanveteranstrong.orgMission Wildflower on Substack: shellyrood.substack.comQuestions or booking inquiries: [email protected] the HostShelly Rood is the host of Hardcore and At Ease, an Others Over Self® show for mission-driven leaders who want to keep their edge without going over the edge.

Don't Be Boring, Here's the Fix: Storytelling 101

Episode 54: "Don't Be Boring, Here's the Fix: Storytelling 101"Ever watched someone's eyes glaze over the second you started talking? You're not imagining it. And it's fixable.Episode DescriptionThis year, two interviews landed on Shelly's calendar that felt like a dream to book. Both guests are good people living lives of real service. Both conversations still fell flat, and not because of who they were.In this solo episode, Shelly unpacks what those two conversations had in common, and holds it up against a very different reaction from early in the show's history, a conversation with an eleven-time New York Times bestselling author that still stands as one of the best interviews on the podcast. The difference wasn't credentials. It was storytelling. You'll walk away with a new way to think about who owns your story, who doesn't, and the one shift that turns "talking about yourself" into a story people lean into instead of tune out of.Chapters00:00 Welcome and Promise01:22 Two Interviews Fell Flat03:09 Donald Miller Breakthrough05:39 Why Stories Hook Us09:10 Zoom In on Stakes11:43 Permission vs Craft15:48 Interviewer Skill Gap17:09 Three Questions to Open Up21:21 Takeaways and ClosingKey TopicsWhy the most accomplished people can still tell a boring storyThe difference between owning your story and earning permission to tell itWhat good storytelling borrows from Save the Cat and The Seven Basic PlotsWhy the interviewer's own skill matters as much as the guest's storyNext Week: Episode 55 — Andy Stumpf, US Navy SEAL (ret.)Resources & LinksLearn More:Hardcore and At Ease Framework: https://www.OthersOverSelf.comPersonal Mission Statement Workshop: [email protected] a Strategy Session: [email protected] Disclaimer: I earn commissions when you purchase through links on this site, podcast, or social media. What Strong Looks Like After the Hard Stuff

Episode 53: "What Strong Looks Like After the Hard Stuff"Strong is not the absence of hard stuff. It is what you build on the other side of it. This episode shows you what that looks like in practice. The leaders who perform at the highest level have usually been through the most. The question nobody asks out loud is how do you stay yourself through all of it — still sharp, still clear, still in the game — when the terrain has been relentless. In this conversation we explore that through the lens of someone who has lived it. From crime scenes to command, from dual military marriage to raising sons who deployed, she has been inside more of the hard stuff than most. What she found inside it, and how she came out the other side, is the conversation worth having.Daina Durham went into the Military Police Corps and came out a CID Special Agent with purview over everything at the felony level — from procurement to fraud to death to murder. She was the only female agent in an office of twenty guys. Her last position before retiring: chief executive of a law enforcement agency. Daughter of a veteran. A veteran. Married to a veteran. Mother of veterans. In this episode you'll hear how she kept a 38-year marriage alive through dual deployments and competing careers, why the strongest leaders are often the last to recognize stress injuries in themselves, what it looks like to rebuild your identity after the uniform comes off, and how she found her way to solid ground after decades inside the hardest terrain a person can walk.CHAPTERS00:00 Welcome And Big Question03:09 Meet Dinah Durham06:26 From Street Cop To Army CID08:51 Marriage Under Deployment Stress21:10 Leaving Service And Inner Work31:01 Marriage Maintenance Mindset33:29 Stop Comparing and Be Real34:37 Integrity and Authentic Leadership38:41 Female Friendship and Identity52:11 Healing Trauma and Finding HopeIn this episode you'll discover:✓ Why the strongest performers are often carrying the most they've never named — and what changes when they finally open the file✓ What 38 years of military marriage teaches about connection that daily communication never will✓ The difference between perfection (a trap) and excellence (a standard you can actually build on)✓ How to recognize the moment the rucksack needs to be inventoried before it carries youFEATURED GUEST: Daina Durham | Army CID Special Agent | Law Enforcement Executive | Counselor, Warrior Set Free Connect: warriorsetfree.orgNEXT WEEK: Episode 54 — A special message from Shelly on the relationships that determine how far you go.LEARN MORE: Hardcore and At Ease Framework: https://www.OthersOverSelf.com Mission Wildflower (Women Veterans): https://shellyrood.substack.com Wildflower Assessment for Women Veterans: https://othersoverself.shop/products/wildflower-assessment-for-women-veterans | Strategy Session: [email protected] Disclaimer: I only recommend products I genuinely use. FISDAP Study Guide: Paramedic Exam Prep Answers (Bonus Episode)What you're getting: This episode is a straight resource drop. We're going audio on the Fisdap Medical Study Guide—all the questions, all the answers, organized by medical topic so you can listen, study, and prepare without staring at a blank outline wondering where to start. The problem this solves: If you're studying for paramedic certification or teaching paramedic education, you've seen the question outlines. They tell you what to learn but not always how to answer. You're hunting through Bledsoe's Paramedic Care looking for specifics on lung sounds, toxidromes, septic shock presentations, seizure types. The studying becomes the obstacle instead of the learning. How to use this: Listen front to back if you're cramming. Jump to the chapter you need if you're targeting weak spots. Test yourself: pause the audio, answer the question in your own words, then play through the answer to see what you missed. The best study tool is the one you actually use—and this one works whether you're driving to your shift, at the gym, or at the kitchen table at midnight.Topics covered:Respiratory & PulmonologyToxicologyPsychiatricGI/GUNeurologyEndocrinologyNephrologyInfectious DiseasesHematologyMiscellaneous conditionsReference: Bledsoe's Paramedic Care: Principles & Practice, Volumes 1 & 2

When You've Gone Over the Edge (And How to Come Back)

Episode 51 - Kevin Barnhill: "When You've Gone Over the Edge (And How to Come Back)"You know exactly what you're doing—cutting people off mid-sentence, getting short, getting harsh—and you can't seem to stop. The people closest to you have noticed the shift. The question isn't whether you've drifted. It's whether you can actually come back.EPISODE DESCRIPTIONYou spend eight years in a high-pressure role thinking you're fine. You tell yourself the hard edge is necessary, that it's part of the job. Then one day your chief pulls you into his office and asks a simple question: "Why are you mean to people?" And everything shifts.Kevin Barnhill spent 28 years in law enforcement—pastor turned cop turned clinical counselor. Somewhere around year eight, he realized he'd become someone his family didn't recognize. His ex-wife asked years later why he didn't change sooner. His kids wanted to know the same thing. But here's what matters: he actually changed it. Not ten years down the road. While he was still in the thick of it.In this episode, Kevin walks host Shelly Rood through the spiral—how it builds layer by layer, how you can watch it happening and still feel powerless to stop it, and most importantly, what actually shifts the momentum. You'll learn the specific moment recognition turns into action, how to train yourself to stay at your center under pressure, and why your only job in the wreckage is to get honest.CHAPTERS & TIMESTAMPS00:00 Catching Yourself—The Moment You See It Happening01:49 Cutting People Off—Small Actions, Big Damage01:53 Momentum Builds—How the Spiral Accelerates02:00 Spiral Begins—The Wreckage Behind You02:05 Knowing Better—Why Awareness Doesn't Stop the CycleKEY TOPICS & INSIGHTSHow high-pressure work erodes light-heartedness and compassion over timeRecognizing when you've drifted from your core identityThe difference between knowing better and actually changing behaviorWhy your chief calling it out matters (and why leadership accountability is crucial)The moment you realize the cost: relationships fractured, family distant, friendships lostDe-escalation and presence: sitting with people instead of rushing to fixTraining yourself to stay at your tactical center when everything wants you to tighten upThe hippocampus room: how anxiety and gratitude occupy the same spaceWhy gratitude becomes a practical tool, not a motivational phraseComing back to yourself—what it looks like from the inside and how your family knows it's realABOUT KEVIN BARNHILLKevin Barnhill is a clinical counselor specializing in first responder mental health and trauma. When Opposite People Become Your Greatest Asset

Episode 49: "When Opposite People Become Your Greatest Asset"You know that person at work who makes decisions the opposite way you do? Who needs things from people that you don't want to give? What if the problem isn't them at all—what if you actually need exactly what they bring?EPISODE DESCRIPTIONTwo women veterans with completely opposite operating systems spent years on separate paths in the Air National Guard. Debi retired after 20-plus years of deployments and rebuilding her life from scratch when she realized she had no idea who she was outside of her titles. Renee built a 32-year military career and then transitioned into civilian leadership without skipping a beat. Today they work side by side on committees that pull junior enlisted women up the ranks. What makes their partnership remarkable isn't that they figured out how to tolerate their differences—it's that they figured out they need their differences. One thinks out loud and needs people around to move. The other goes internal, needs space to land her thoughts. In any other context, that tension would split them apart. Instead, it's exactly what makes them effective together.Host Shelly Rood explores what happens when two ambitious leaders stop trying to change each other and start asking what power they can build. This is about the choice that matters more than personality type, framework, or strategy: deciding that someone else's way of thinking is the piece you're missing.CHAPTERS00:00 Do Opposites Attract02:32 Meet Renee and Debbie04:07 Renee Joins the Guard10:11 Debi's Military Roots17:38 Retirement and Transition28:24 Medical Retirement After Deployments29:49 Empty Nest Identity Crisis32:31 Service Dog Breaks Isolation36:42 Friendship Patterns and Flower Types52:12 Mentorship and Closing ReflectionsIN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL DISCOVER✓ Why the leadership trait you think makes you incompatible might actually be what you need most✓ How loss of identity after a major transition can become the foundation for rebuilding✓ What two women veterans learned about using opposite strengths instead of fighting them✓ The only question that determines whether you clash or create togetherFEATURED GUESTSDebi Clifford — Air National Guard veteran, retired after 20-plus years with medical retirement. Double Middle Fingers and a Homecoming

Episode 47 — Adam Castillo: "Double Middle Fingers and a Homecoming"Hardcore and At Ease | Mission Ambition, LLCYou gave everything to a country that claimed to want you back. So what do you do when it doesn't make room for you? You build something they can't take back. And then you come home.Adam Castillo came home from Afghanistan ready to work. Corporate America hung the banners. Hire a hero. And then wouldn't get him through the door for a warehouse supervisor interview. So he gave it double middle fingers, packed up, and moved to one of the most dangerous places on earth. What he built there, and who he became, is the kind of story that reframes everything you thought you knew about rejection, reinvention, and what it means to finally come home.In this episode, United States Marine and combat veteran Adam Castillo breaks down what happens when the system hands you something that was never actually meant for you, how anger becomes either your exit or your engine, and what a man carries back after twelve years of building in a war zone. This is leadership in crisis. This is the American spirit abroad. This is Hardcore and At Ease.In This EpisodeWhy corporate America's "hire a hero" movement felt like a betrayal to returning veterans in 2012-2013How Adam channeled post-service rejection into building a security company in Myanmar that employed thousandsWhat it means to lead a business community through a military takeover with no playbookThe VA claim he didn't file for over a decade, and the all-night sign-up in Bangkok that changed everythingWhy faith and a fellow veteran's words became the turning pointWhat he is carrying back to Riverside, California, and why it fits this timeFeatured GuestAdam Castillo is a United States Marine, combat veteran of Afghanistan, author, and founder of a security company in Myanmar that employed thousands at its peak. Everyone celebrated the result and nobody asked how you got there. If that sounds familiar, this episode is going to hit somewhere specific. In this solo episode, Shelly Rood breaks down what happens when you perform a standard inside a system that was never fully designed for your reality, and what it actually means to claim the full value of what that demanded from you. This is not a conversation about fairness. It is about intelligence, accuracy, and owning what you bring to the table.Using a vivid story from her Army days, Shelly unpacks the difference between a tactical executor and a strategist, why the people who do both rarely get credit for either, and how a three-step inventory process gives you the confidence to stop leaving your own value on the table. But you're waiting for the plan, the money, the perfect moment. What if the gap itself is the signal to move?Melissa Washington didn't wait. With no business plan and no financial safety net, she built Women Veterans Alliance from a single Sacramento meetup into a global organization reaching thousands — with a giving foundation, a national broadcast event, and a Thrive Causemetics shade named after her. This conversation is for anyone building something that matters without a roadmap telling them how.Melissa brings the kind of candor that mission-driven leaders rarely hear: talking openly about refinancing her house to keep the mission alive, giving a business award the same year she was personally struggling financially, and why saying "money is not a dirty word" is an act of leadership.(00:00) No Plan Just Purpose (02:50) Building Women Veterans Alliance (07:31) Funding Giving And Thrive (18:18) Navy Service And Transition (28:02) Marriage Moves Infertility (29:33) Layoff Sparks Reinvention (36:04) Women Veterans Engage Network (51:13) Wilderness Framework ClosingIn This Episode You'll Discover:✓ Why building without a plan isn't recklessness — it's what happens when your Tactical Center is clear✓ How one woman turned a 2009 layoff into a global organization serving millions✓ Why talking openly about money is a leadership skill, not an overshare✓ What the Wilderness terrain looks like for leaders who built something from nothingFeatured Guest: Melissa Washington — Navy veteran, CEO, founder of Women Veterans Alliance and Women Veterans Giving, author, publisher of Women Veterans Magazine, 2025 Military Friendly National Navy Veteran of the Year. How to Receive the Support You've Been Building for Everyone Else

Episode 42: "How to Receive the Support You've Been Building for Everyone Else"You can see exactly what everyone around you needs. Recognizing it in yourself is a different skill entirely — and many high-performing leaders never develop it.Sarah Merwin is Executive Director of Holbrook Farms, a nonprofit retreat community serving military widows, women who have lost a sibling in service, and mothers who have lost a child in uniform. She walked into the first retreat she planned with the itinerary ready and her perspective clear: this is for them. By the time dinner ended on night one, she knew she was one of them. The need she had named and structured for every woman in that room had been living quietly in her the whole time. This episode is part of the Wilderness Series. The caretaking wilderness accumulates before we can name it — the things we stopped asking for without noticing, the slow drift from measuring what we receive to measuring only what we produce. What Sarah built at Holbrook Farms over twelve years proves that peer support fills a need that nothing else reaches. The Caretaking Wilderness: How to Keep Your Edge Without Losing Yourself

Episode 41: "The Caretaking Wilderness: How to Keep Your Edge Without Losing Yourself"Ever feel like you might be running on empty and nobody would even notice. Are you managing the household, the care, the business, the children — and the system designed to support the people you love doesn't even see you? That is the blind spot. That is where this wilderness lives. In this episode, Shelly Rood goes into the second wilderness type — the caretaking wilderness. It does not look like crisis from the outside. It looks like competence. It might look like you. Drawing on personal experience across multiple caretaking relationships, Shelly introduces five root pulls: the invisible forces gripping your root system and pulling against your forward momentum. Each one is specific, identifiable, and nameable. This is not theory. This is terrain mapping for leaders already in it.The Others Over Self® framework runs underneath all of it — because sustainable service requires leading from a full center outward, and the caretaking wilderness is precisely where that sequence collapses.CHAPTERS: (00:00) Silence to Invisibility (01:25) Entering the Caretaking Wilderness (07:34) Welcome to the Wilderness: Others Over Self® Mindset Shift (17:46) Root Pulls and Boundaries: The Five Root Pulls Explained (29:40) Silence Makes You Disappear: Root Pull Three (33:42) Thankless Math and Resentment: Root Pull Four (38:56) Caretaking for the Leader: Root Pull Five (43:41) Survival Mode to Staying Rooted (49:02) What Now? When the Path Disappears: Welcome to the Wilderness

Episode 39: "When the Path Disappears: Welcome to the Wilderness"You're not falling apart. You're in terrain that has no name yet. And that's exactly the problem. Most frameworks for ambitious people were built on one assumption: that hard things arrive one at a time. For you, they arrive in clusters. A diagnosis, a move, a relationship ending, a role change — not across a decade, but across a Tuesday. Researcher Bruce Feiler found the average person navigates three to five major life disruptions across an entire lifetime. You've counted more than that in the last three years alone. That's not drama. That's your wiring. And the reason every standard playbook keeps missing is because it was never built for how you actually operate. In this solo episode, Shelly Rood introduces the Wilderness Framework — the first tool in a new series built specifically for ambitious people who run parallel terrain. When the World Won't Calm Down: Leading from Your Center

Episode 38 - Erin Dunn: "When the World Won't Calm Down: Leading from Your Center"You can't eliminate the chaos. But you can stop letting it run you. What if the real leadership skill isn't handling pressure — it's building something inside you that pressure can't reach?Every ambitious leader knows what it feels like when everything hits at once. The demands stack, the environment is loud, and you're expected to perform anyway. Most leaders white-knuckle it — they power through, suppress the signal, and wonder why they feel scattered three days later. This episode is for the leader who is ready to stop surviving the chaos and start operating from above it.Erin Dunn spent 10 years in the Air Force — six in public affairs and four as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. She went on to serve as a geopolitical planner and foreign policy advisor with the joint staff, earned her law degree while deployed as a government civilian to Iraq as a single mom, and retired from federal service. She is now focused full-time on veteran advocacy. What she learned — through post-traumatic stress, through grief, through a VA system that largely failed her — is a masterclass in Tactical Center. When the System Has You: Keeping Your Standards Intact Anyway

Episode 37: "When the System Has You: Keeping Your Standards Intact Anyway"You did everything right. So why is the institution coming after you? What happens to your leadership identity when performing at 100% still isn't enough to change the outcome? In this solo episode, Shelly Rood tackles one of the most isolating experiences a high-performing leader can face: being falsely accused — not by one angry colleague, but by the system itself. Drawing on two real situations from her military career, Shelly names exactly what this terrain is, why your standard tools won't work here, and what actually keeps your identity intact while you wait for a process that has no procedure for innocence. This isn't a resilience pep talk. It's a terrain map for leaders who are currently performing at full capacity while being quietly dismantled — and need to know they're not failing. How to Set Boundaries Without Losing Your Mission-First Edge

EPISODE 32 - "How to Set Boundaries Without Losing Your Mission-First Edge"If you're the person everyone counts on to hold the line, who's holding the line for you? This is the conversation we don't have enough in mission-driven leadership: boundaries aren't for weak people who can't handle pressure. Boundaries are for strong people who've been handling everyone else's pressure for so long they've forgotten what it feels like to not be the shock absorber for every crisis, every disappointment, every person who refuses to respect what you've clearly communicated. You know boundaries matter. You probably teach them. But when it's 2 AM and that text comes through—the one that makes your stomach drop because you know it's going to ruin your morning before it even starts—knowing you "should have boundaries" doesn't help. You need a system. You need language for what you're experiencing. And you need to hear from someone who's lived through setting boundaries with an ex-husband, with family members battling addiction, with professional relationships that became unhealthy long before you realized it.This episode walks through the three-step boundary management process (Recognize, Educate, Review/Revise) using real examples from custody agreements, communication breakdowns, and that particular loneliness of being physically near someone while feeling completely isolated. The Windows, Walkways, and Walls system gives you a graduated response—so you're not building brick walls when you need a simple path, and you're not hoping walkways will protect you when consequences are actually required.KEY TOPICS & TIMESTAMPS(00:00) Introduction and Overview(01:14) Understanding Boundaries(03:24) Group Guidelines and Introductions(10:10) Types of Boundaries and Real-Life Applications(33:26) Introduction to Boundary Setting(34:28) Sharon's Story: Identifying Boundaries(42:51) Rebecca's Story: Recognizing the Need for Boundaries(53:45) Final Thoughts and Journaling ExerciseIN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL DISCOVER✓ Why "mission-first" leaders are most vulnerable to boundary violations—and how believing you should be strong enough to handle anything becomes the very thing that keeps you trapped✓ The Family Wizard solution that transformed 2 AM accusatory texts into respectful communication by adding one element most leaders forget: third-party visibility creates accountability walkways can't✓ How to recognize when you're trying to fix someone else's problem instead of protecting your own peace—and why "we're not here to fix others" is the hardest truth for givers to internalize✓ The difference between walls that protect versus walls that isolate, and why consequences aren't cruel when they're the only thing that makes your boundaries realEPISODE RESOURCESWindows, Walkways and Walls Slidedeck: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Iprujrl4tPaLRpotW9d4TExTe8kJXAW1/view?usp=sharingNEXT EPISODE PREVIEWNext Week: Vicki Selva, Executive Director of the Detroit Regional Defense CoalitionDiscover how a leader who coordinates three counties and multiple organizations maintains influence without control, generates momentum through authentic collaboration, and expects excellence while building the kind of trust that makes partnership feel natural instead of forced.RESOURCES & LINKSLearn More:Hardcore and At Ease Framework: https://www.OthersOverSelf.comPersonal Mission Statement Workshop: [email protected] a Strategy Session: [email protected] Disclaimer:I only recommend products I genuinely use. Your days feel like building blocks scattered on the ground instead of actually building something? This episode reveals why protection decisions come with ongoing costs that last for years.EPISODE DESCRIPTIONAmbitious leaders face a brutal truth: Sometimes the biggest threat to mission success isn't external competition—it's the environment leaders tolerate. In January 2025, show host Shelly Rood chose three words that saved her calling: Protect Your Joy. But here's what nobody tells you about protection: the demons don't die easily. This episode walks through seven protection decisions Rood made in 2025—from launching a podcast during home chaos (hitting top 1% globally in six months) to firing profitable revenue streams that drained mission capacity. Each lesson came with third and fourth order effects she's still managing today. Court dates from a 2014 divorce. Social media slander from contractors let go. Collections calls over bills she's certain were paid.Rood explores the difference between prevention (delaying disaster) and protection (defending what matters), Gandhi's principle that change starts with self, and why zero-tolerance policies aren't harsh—they're strategic. Plus, a preview of 2026's focus: building the ONE thing after protecting capacity.KEY TOPICS & TIMESTAMPS(00:00) Introduction: Protect Your Joy(01:21) The Mantra of Protect Your Joy(02:27) Understanding Joy as Fuel(03:17) Challenges and Unhealthy Patterns(06:05) Prevention vs. Protection(07:28) Real-World Examples of Protection(12:52) Seven Lessons from 2025(17:02) Mission Protection and Personal Boundaries(24:24) Intentional Quality of Life Standards(35:51) Conclusion: Focus for 2026IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL DISCOVERWhy "Protect Your Joy" means mission stewardship, not self-indulgence—and how joy functions as your fuel indicatorThe 7 protection decisions that liberate purpose-driven capacity (with ongoing costs each requires)General Slocum's continuum of harm principle and why some behaviors cannot coexist with mission successHow launching imperfectly during chaos beat 8 years of perfectionism—and reached top 1% in 6 monthsNEXT EPISODE PREVIEWNext Week: Episode 30 - Guest Interview A powerful conversation with a leader who's built collaborative excellence without burning out. When Do Ambitious Leaders Get to Be Loved?

Episode 28: "When Do Ambitious Leaders Get to Be Loved?"Are you loved for who you really are, or just the model of perfection people expect? When do ambitious leaders get to lower their standards and just be accepted? This episode answers that question with raw stories from five women veterans who discovered we don't have to choose between being excellent and being authentically ourselves. In this special recording from the Others Over Self 2023 Leadership Conference & Women Veterans Engage - Detroit (presented by General Motors), Kelly Tulloch leads a powerful panel featuring Erica Hoover (Michigan Women Veterans & Special Populations Coordinator, MVAA), Pazzella Bonner (Homes for Heroic Veterans founder), Sarah Gagnan (Air Force veteran and GM autonomous systems specialist), and Qwynn Galloway-Salazar, Ph.D. (Founder of In Their Honor, LLC and end-of-life doula). You'll hear stories about being told they're "too happy" for military service, modeling plus-size clothing when the industry said they didn't exist, starting businesses after being fired while caring for dying parents, and being 65 years old still working on self-acceptance. These women reveal how they built confidence through failure, transformed criticism into fuel, and discovered that sharing your light only makes it brighter. This is about building social support networks that catch us when we're questioning everything. It's about creating communities where ambitious leaders can be both excellent and struggling, both capable and needing support—both hardcore and at ease.CHAPTERS: (00:00) Introduction and Host's Opening Remarks (01:21) Personal Reflections and Challenges (03:31) Panel Introduction and Backgrounds (07:55) Defining Confidence (12:59) Overcoming Adversity and Building Confidence (29:53) Embracing Empathy and Understanding (30:47) Navigating Challenges and Setbacks (33:40) Advocacy and Identity (38:31) Building Confidence and Inner Strength (51:38) Final Reflections and TakeawaysIN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL DISCOVER:Why we don't have to choose between being loved and maintaining standardsHow to build social support networks that hold you through hard momentsThe difference between "fake it till you make it" and authentic confidenceWhy sharing your light with others only makes yours brighterHow five women leaders turned their biggest setbacks into their greatest strengthsFEATURED PANELISTS: Kelly Tulloch (Panel Lead) - Military Woman Advocate, U.S. Air Force Veteran Erica Hoover - Women Veterans & Special Populations Coordinator, MVAA, U.S. Navy Veteran Pazzella Bonner - U.S. Army Veteran, Founder of Homes for Heroic Veterans, 2021 Macomb County Veteran of the Year Sarah Gagnan - Active Duty 2008-2019, Michigan Air National Guard, General Motors Autonomous Systems Specialist Qwynn Galloway-Salazar, Ph.D. - U.S. Army Veteran, Founder of In Their Honor, LLC, End-of-Life Doula & Death EducatorNEXT WEEK: Episode 29 - "Year-End Reflection: What Winning Leaders Do Differently" - We're closing out 2025 by looking at what actually worked this year and how to carry lessons forward without carrying the weight.RESOURCES: Hardcore and At Ease Framework: https://othersoverself.com/ Strategy Session: [email protected] Disclaimer: I only recommend products I genuinely use. The Aiming Problem - Why Leaders Miss What They're Actually Shooting For

Episode 26: "The Aiming Problem - Why Leaders Miss What They're Actually Shooting For"Have you ever looked at someone else's credentials and thought "if I only had what they have"? Meanwhile, you're completely blind to the value you already bring. That kind of thinking throws off your aim and you end up hitting the wrong targets.EPISODE DESCRIPTIONIn this episode, we're tackling the most dangerous blindness ambitious leaders carry: the inability to see what you actually have. Through five personal stories—including a young chaplain sitting on her Master's degree, a GED that represents hidden strengths, and focus groups that revealed unexpected intimidation—you'll discover why you're blind to your own bullseye while perfectly able to see everyone else's.You'll learn the three core practices that help you recognize what you already have so you can stop chasing what you lack: Recognition over collection, valuing earned wisdom, and seeing equal worth in different expressions. This isn't about lowering your standards—it's about aiming with precision at targets that actually matter. This episode connects directly to your Tactical Center (knowing your operational bullseye) and Resourceful Action (stewarding the gifts you've been given). He knows the difference between strategic preparation and destructive anxiety. In this conversation, he shares how he channels hypervigilance into purposeful action, why saying "I can't handle this alone" recruits better than any pitch, and why giving away free land multiplied his impact beyond any traditional business strategy. The Black Line: How to Expect Excellence Without Controlling Everyone

Episode 18: "The Black Line: How to Expect Excellence Without Controlling Everyone"Working with other strong personalities feels harder than it should. You maintain high standards, you're direct about what needs to happen, and somehow people still resist you. The question you're not asking: Are you maintaining standards, or are you blurring the line between what needs to be accomplished and how people accomplish it?In this episode, we explore what it means to expect excellence through the black line principle—defining the outcome with absolute clarity while releasing control of the execution. You'll discover what Abraham Lincoln knew about managing massive egos, why winning hearts and minds through strategic conversation is just as powerful as public demonstration, and the three-part protocol for building excellence systematically instead of demanding it through force of personality. This is about drawing the black line thick around purpose while stepping back from the colors of execution—so talented people can bring their brilliance without you controlling every detail.CHAPTERS:00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview01:19 Recognizing Personal Blind Spots06:28 Lessons from Abraham Lincoln12:53 Defining and Maintaining Purpose27:30 Understanding Miscommunication in Leadership29:02 Recognizing and Addressing Silent Resistance32:43 The Impact of Ambition on Relationships41:14 Implementing the Black Line ProtocolIN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL DISCOVER:✓ The black line principle: how defining purpose with clarity while releasing method creates innovation✓ Five warning signs that people are managing you instead of working with you (and what to do about it)✓ The three-part Black Line Protocol for expecting excellence systematically✓ Why rallies create pressure but conversation creates change—and when to use eachNEXT WEEK: Episode 19 - Vicki Rowinski: "Building Collaborative Excellence Without Burnout"Vicki Rowinski has spent 12 years transforming Macomb County, Michigan into a $6 billion defense and aerospace hub. How to Lead 8,000 People Without Becoming the Bottleneck (Lessons from Detroit Arsenal's Carrie Mead)

Based on the Show Notes Creation Prompt from project knowledge, here are the complete show notes for Episode 17:Episode 17 - Carrie Mead: "How to Lead 8,000 People Without Becoming the Bottleneck"Hook OpeningSound familiar? You're working harder than ever, carrying more responsibility than anyone else on your team, and convinced you're the only one who really cares about getting it right. What if the real problem isn't that you need to work harder—it's that you've become the bottleneck?Episode DescriptionMost high-achieving leaders plateau not because they lack skill or work ethic, but because they stop collaborating and start operating in silos. They protect information instead of sharing it strategically. They try to do more themselves instead of multiplying through others. And then they wonder why everything falls apart when they step away.In this episode, Carrie Mead—one of only seven civilians in the entire Army to hold a garrison manager position typically reserved for a colonel—reveals how she managed 8,000 people at Detroit Arsenal without becoming the bottleneck. You'll discover why career advancement comes from network expansion rather than ladder climbing, the one question that transforms information hoarding into collaborative momentum, and how to build leadership systems that prove their strength when you're not in the room. This is Generate Momentum in action—one of the core principles of the Hardcore and At Ease Framework. It's about building collaborative systems that multiply exponentially instead of creating bottlenecks that depend on your constant presence.Carrie never served in the military, yet she built a 20-year career serving military families and leading defense communities. From Red Cross caseworker to managing a cornerstone of America's defense industry, her path demonstrates what happens when you prioritize collaboration over control and network expansion over ladder climbing.Key Topics & Timestamps(00:00) - Introduction and Show OverviewWhy high achievers plateau and what it takes to break through(00:35) - Meet Carrie Mead: Breaking Career PlateausOne of seven civilians holding a colonel-level position in the Army(01:12) - A Personal Connection: Shelly's StoryFrom breakfast meetings to water glasses—what authentic leadership really looks like(03:19) - Generating Collaborative MomentumThe Hardcore and At Ease Framework's Generate Momentum principle: transforming individual excellence into team excellence(05:29) - Carrie's Journey in the Defense IndustryFrom Red Cross caseworker to managing America's ground combat vehicle hub(09:11) - Leadership and Community InvolvementWomen in Defense, Fisher House Michigan, and multiplying impact beyond the day job(33:12) - Conclusion and Key TakeawaysBreaking through by asking "who else needs to know?"In This Episode You'll Discover:✓ Why asking "who else needs to know?" instead of "who has need to know" transforms information silos into collaborative momentum that multiplies across organizations✓ The career progression strategy that prioritizes network expansion over ladder climbing—and why each role should expand connections that create unexpected opportunities✓ How to build leadership systems that continue without your constant presence (if everything stops when you step away, you've built a bottleneck, not momentum)✓ The counterintuitive truth about work-life balance that rejects equal distribution—and why you need to pass through the balance point more often instead of trying to freeze there✓ What authentic leadership at scale actually looks like: managing 8,000 people while still handing out water glasses at galasFeatured GuestCarrie Mead - Former Garrison Manager, Detroit Arsenal | Currently: U.S. Army War CollegeCarrie is one of only seven civilians in the Army to hold a garrison manager position typically reserved for a colonel.
