Broke by Design: Untangling the System Failing Women at Every Income Level w/ Kristine Beese
"Don’t let an industry and a society that downplays our ability with money stop you from learning about it, talking about it, doing things about it.” - Kristine BeeseKristine Beese is on a mission to get a financial plan into the hands of every woman. You might be thinking, “How does she aim to achieve this?” By helping women understand how the choices they make today with their “now money” will affect their future money. Kristine holds an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, an Engineering Physics degree from Queen's University, and a Professional Engineer designation. She also represented Western Canada at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in the Senior Pairs category. Her journey from athlete to engineer to entrepreneur has been inspiring to watch, and she’s just getting started. After 10 years in the finance industry working with institutional and accredited investors, Kristine noticed that the financial system didn’t meet the needs of women—not even the needs of women with a lot of money. If the financial system didn’t work for them, it certainly wouldn't for everyday women with less wealth. This prompted her to found Untangle Money in 2020. In this episode, we discuss how an early experience with money inspired her to learn how to manage her own investments, what women of different ages are struggling with the most financially, the most common tradeoffs people in the “middle income” have to make, the Untangled framework, her Dragon’s Den experience, and more. Women's Ambition Isn't the Problem—It's What We Do To Ambitious Women: Running It Back w/ Stefanie O'Connell
To honour the release of The Ambition Penalty, we’re bringing back this chat with author Stefanie O’Connell, an award-winning writer and journalist covering money, power and ambition in the press and one of our favourite newsletters, Too Ambitious.Stefanie’s research has never been more important. She uses data to expose how power and gender collide to keep women “in their place,” and shows how liberating women’s ambitions can liberate us all.In The Ambition Penalty, a phrase she defines as “the sum of the financial, personal, and professional costs women face for daring to want more,” Stefanie challenges the misconception that women lack ambition compared to men. She debunks common claims—like the idea that women aren’t confident enough or don’t speak up enough—used to explain gender disparities in positions of power. Throughout, Stefanie explores why years of progress in education and empowerment have not led to equal advancement for women in the workplace or at home.According to Stefanie, “By recognizing all of the ways the ambition penalty plays out in women’s working lives, not only can we see how the assumptions behind this blame game are wrong, but we can also start to see what they cost us.”In this conversation (pre-book), we discuss everything from gig work to 90s girl power to salary negotiation to the #girlboss movement. Math Scaries? How a Fear of Numbers Creeps Into Our Money Mindset w/ Vanessa Vakharia
"I find so many people, women specifically, are not confident making decisions around finance or around politics, or being opinionated because they don't feel comfortable with numbers, and that needs to stop." - Vanessa Vakharia In the spirit of Halloween, we're serving up a special treat—and taking you back to where it all began: our very first full interview on the show. It felt only right to start this journey where so many of our money beliefs and behaviours begin: with a fear of math.We sat down with Vanessa Vakharia, a.k.a @themathguru — author, musician, speaker, and founder of a boutique tutoring studio where they hold exam parties and drink Pi tea lattes. Vanessa helps us unpack why so many of us say "I'm just not a math person," and how that quietly shapes how we think about money, confidence, and even our voices in the world. In this replay, we also talk about why creating a shame-free, judgment-free space matters—both in math class and in money conversations. If you've ever felt haunted by numbers, you're not alone. And this conversation might exorcise those fears 👻To follow along with Vanessa, tap or click HERE.To learn more about The Math Guru, tap or click HERE.
