I'm So Not Over It

I'm So Not Over It is a comedy history podcast about things you'll remember from the first time round. Each week comedy writers Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears explore a different month in history – but with a brief stretching from the mid-70s to the present day. Basically, if you could see it, it would be in colour. It’s politics and pop culture for the eighties, nineties, noughties and beyond, delivered in 20 minute hits because we know what your attention span is like.  So if you remember Westlife but struggle with the Westland affair and if your favourite Aitken was a Tory MP or the one who co-wrote I Should Be So Lucky, we’ve got you covered in this ridiculous historical guide to the information age (even if that information came from a poorly recalled browse of Encarta ‘95). These weekly episodes are interspersed with interviews with the people who lived through this period to understand whether it has ha

    June 1994 (The Revenge Dress)

Gareth and Esyllt's Scrapbook is available NOW on BBC Sounds! Each episode tackles two years in recent history with archive, music and guests. There are three episodes available now featuring Sunil Patel, Claudine Boulstridge of Healthy Family Food Ideas, Miles Jupp and my (Gareth's) mum. Oh and there's clips appearing on Instagram and TikTok too in which my (Gareth's) face is almost permanently obscured. Check it out!The World Cup, OJ Simpson, Diana's Revenge Dress and all that surrounds it - it turns out June 1994 was a Big Month, but there's plenty of details we'd never come across before. Yes, Diana Ross missed the penalty which was meant to kick-off the 1994 World Cup, but that was probably the least shambolic moment in their wildly chaotic opening ceremony. Similarly, outside the Serpentine Gallery, Lady Diana is pulling focus away from Prince Charles' 2 hour TV documentary, by turning up to dinner in her famous Revenge Dress, but have you ever stopped to wonder who the bloke she shakes hands with is? All will be revealed. The opening ceremony of the 1994 FIFA World Cup is available here. You can find us at [email protected] or one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoveritOther ProjectsProbably as good a time as any to remind you that Esyllt has another podcast, Speaking As A Mother, with Robin Morgan. Gareth (me) doesn't have another podcast, but would like you to come and see his show Cyril in Edinburgh if you're about and he's (me, still) also doing Work In Progresses on 8 July in London, 14 July in Cardiff and one in Bath but details for that aren't available yet. June 2005 (Mayor Of The Month)

Gareth and Esyllt's Scrapbook is available NOW on BBC Sounds! This is a brand new show for BBC Radio Wales. In each edition, we'll tackle two years in recent history with archive, music and guests. There are three episodes available now, featuring Josie Long, Sunil Patel, Claudine Boulstridge of Healthy Family Food Ideas, Miles Jupp and, still to come in the run, my (Gareth's) mum. Oh and there's clips appearing on Instagram and TikTok too in which my (Gareth's) face is almost permanently obscured.Anyway, today's show is about June 2005. Gareth Gwynn has just handed in his final year project on "Viewpoint Invariant Content Based Image Retrieval for Urban Navigation" while The Queen inspected a naval fleet (footage of the evening celebrations are here). There's also key updates on car of the month, mayor of the month and proverb of the month. May 1992 (Beneath The Sea. In Space)

Gareth and Esyllt's Scrapbook is available NOW on BBC Sounds! This is a brand new show for BBC Radio Wales. In each edition, we'll tackle two years in recent history with archive, music and guests. There are two episodes available now, featuring Josie Long, Sunil Patel, Claudine Boulstridge of Healthy Family Food Ideas and, still to come in the run, Miles Jupp and my (Gareth's) mum. Episode 1 covers 1999 and 1984, with episode 2 featuring 1997 and 1989. Oh and there's clips appearing on Instagram and TikTok too in which my (Gareth's) face is almost permanently obscured. Anyway, to today's episode... May 1992. A dog from a soap opera dies in this one and, honestly, that's not the most miserable thing that happens. I feel like trigger warnings abound for just "miserable stuff" but tucked inside things which sound fun - There's the launch of Wire TV, which you can check out on YouTube after you've listened to the show, and there's the International Space Year 1992 - the poster of which probably has to be seen to be believed. Full disclosure, that was me spelling it the wrong way by mistake, not noticing till it arrived on everyone's podcast feeds then going to change it and deciding it was probably funnier in the light of all the other Welsh people mentioned in that episode that I'd spelled it the Welsh way and looked like a funny joke - so just decided to leave it. Anyway, it's another Welsh-heavy episode this week. There was a UK census in 1981 but it was the question regarding Welsh speakers, and the rather disappointing answer it returned, that loomed large in Esyllt's life. We talk about lying about eating Weetabix, why women are being replaced with birds and consider talking about Bucks Fizz and then don't.We've got a BBC Radio Wales show coming up. We'll be covering 1999, 1997, 1984 and 1982 - Any memories of those years in particular? Let us know (before 19th April!) St. David's Day with SIAN HARRIES

It's St David's Day!(Or it is on March 1st, so it slightly depends when you listen to this episode). Either way, we've decided to do an episode that is unambiguously and unashamedly Welsh. I mean, they ALL are really, but this time we're going to lean into it - and who better to talk about all things Dewi Sant than the superb Welsh comedy writer SIAN HARRIES!Sian is the co-writer of the hit BBC One comedy-drama Death Valley, Channel 4's Man Down, is one of the writers and stars of BBC One Wales' Tourist Trap and the S4C sketch show O'r Diwedd. She also co-presents The Froth Podcast with Rhod Gilbert. Sian talks us through some of the most miserable meals and uncomfortable costumes you've ever heard about, as well as a blow-by-blow account of the secondary school Eisteddfod experience. There's plenty of picking apart the difference between English-language and Welsh-language Wales, as well as Sian's selection for The Xennial Dome, lots of relevant Winter Olympic discussion and memories of looking sad in a shoe shop at the death of Princess Diana.Sian mentions a school Eisteddfod performance with Elis James - Don't forget you can hear his episode, live from the London Welsh Centre, here. You can get in touch with the show on [email protected] or contact us on one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoveritTheme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay.I'm So Not Over It is a Mighty Bunny Production. But don't worry - this time, it's planned. We were on our way to record an episode with the brilliant comedy writer Sian Harries for St David's Day, but before that, we had time for a quick catch-up and a run through the key goings on from February 1977.We briefly mention Fleetwood Mac, a band we've already covered in the episode Little Dome: September 1977 (Atari 2600, Fleetwood Mac, Bing Crosby and David Bowie), but with that out of the way we can get onto the matter of Tony Hart, Pat Keysell, Vision On, Take Hart, Neil Buchanan (the shadow Tony Hart) and, man of the hour, Morph. What do you think an 18+ Morph series should be called? 1988 (Just 1988)

Not so much of a "month in history" episode this week, but a whole year as Esyllt Sears tries to sum it all up courtesy of a Guardian quiz. There's a lot more to it than that, but the explanation gets very complicated very quickly so we'll leave it to the podcast. If you like a show which sums up a whole year in one bound, I Can't Get Over 2025 is available on BBC Sounds now and there's even a video clip online, if you want to see the Oakwood Park footage for yourself. We also cover the spiritual prequel to Challenge Anneka, Treasure Hunt, and there's a whole thing about sardines which isn't about September 1989 at all, but will make you relieved that in the relentless march towards "Visualized Content", no-one is bothering with capturing smells.Get in touch on [email protected] or contact us on one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoverit Theme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay.I'm So Not Over It is A Mighty Bunny Production. September 1998 (Geri Halliwell's Car Boot Sale)

The Royle Family and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? both started in September 1998 and completely redefined their respective TV genres - but you know about those already, which is why we won't bother talking about them much. Instead, Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears cover a long forgotten Cilla Black vehicle and a Channel 4 documentary about modelling they pulled at the last minute, which are probably just as influental, but for all the wrong reasons. We also cover Geri's Union Jack dress, the Past Times business model and whether Gareth could pretend to be Esyllt's dad for cash. There's also a mention of the Berlin Wall thanks to Adam - he co-presents the podcast Lightly Used with Adam and Karen, which is all about quality charity shop finds - you can listen here.Get in touch on [email protected] or contact us on one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoverit Theme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay.I'm So Not Over It is A Mighty Bunny Production. Summer Leftovers

It's the first time we've ever done a "Summer Leftovers" special (and what Summer Leftovers are exactly, we'll leave to the show itself) but it's the usual drill - Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears present bits and bobs which didn't fit into the weekly episodes. August 1977 (Elvis)

Gareth Gwynn is heading to Edinburgh! Having repeatedly told people he wasn't going, it turns out he'll be doing his show "Cyril" in the Hotel Indigo Edinburgh, York Place, EH1 3JD at 4pm on the 20th-24th August 2025. It's about history, but not history you remember (unless you are over 100 and lived in Gower). That's just about all the information we have right now, but anything else, he'll pop on his website, like a BBC TV show from 2001.As for this week? Well, we start with a peak behind the curtain. What happen when we start researching a month and think "this is a bit bleak?" Often, we ditch it and find another (which means, yes, one day there'll be a real tranche of tricksy ones to smash through - but we'll cross that miserable bridge when we get to it).But not today! Esyllt Sears saw the death of Elvis Presley on the list and decided to push on. Somehow we also cover 1970s clothing safety standards, what to do when your friend works for a Burger King and we ask the question, how distracted have you been by a strawberry? Gareth Gwynn is heading to Edinburgh!Having repeatedly told people he wasn't going, it turns out he'll be doing his show "Cyril" in the Hotel Indigo Edinburgh, York Place, EH1 3JD at 4pm on the 20th-24th August 2025.It's about history, but not history you remember (unless you are over 100 and lived in Gower).  This has all been quite a last minute affair, so that's just about all the information we have right now, but anything else, he'll pop on his website (God, that's awfully Xennial isn't it? Having a website? Jeez). We couldn't put out a message just saying that, so here's a clip from last week's show we'd put aside for the next "Leftovers" episode, all about August 2003. August 2003 (Movie Night)

We give the more newsy-news of August 2003 a wide berth this week, preferring to concentrate on the film releases of the month. Gareth Gwynn was working in a cinema, so should have the inside track on what was going on in movieland. However, what he actually discusses with Esyllt Sears is the millitary's preferences for sweets, prepping for a jazz-themed purge and Nicholas Parsons. What films do you remember from the summer of 2003? August 1995 (Drinking and Reading)

Esyllt Sears and Gareth Gwynn deal with what (or, more accurately when) people were drinking in August 1995 as changes to pub opening times were introduced - meaning that, for the first time, you could stay in a pub all afternoon on a Sunday. We also tackle with the literature of the era, covering what you read in a caravan (see image) and the summer of 1995 in Reading.Send us a message on [email protected] or contact us on one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoveritTheme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay.Esyllt Sears is on BBC One Wales' Live From Merthyr Tydfil which is available on BBC iPlayer now.I'm So Not Over It is A Mighty Bunny Production. July 1980 (Moscow Olympics)

It's July 1980 and the world looks to Moscow. Well, some of the world looks to Moscow because 66 countries chose to boycott that year's Olympic Games, but the ones who do turn up are treated to an obscene gesture by a Polish althlete, a cartoon with a somewhat confusing message and a genuinely moving closing ceremony. Gareth Gwynn talks Esyllt Sears through what is, technically, the cleanest Olympics of all time - before tackling MFI and Enterpriese Zones. Did your bookcase collapse? CHARLOTTE BERMAN (The Traitors, Big Brother and July 2000)

We are joined by the star of the legendary third series of The Traitors - the absolutely fantastic CHARLOTTE BERMAN to talk Bop-it, being banished and an awful lot more besides.Yes, there are spoilers galore for that series (and, indeed, the very first series of Big Brother if you're really behind) but also plenty to enjoy if you've never seen an episode but wonder what life in the castle might be like.Unusually, she's the only one NOT doing a Welsh accent, but you can expect plenty of Traitors gossip (she kept a diary!) plus Charlotte's memories of The Dome, royal deaths (not the one you're expecting) and musicals - as well as her choice for our own museum dedicated to recent history, The Xennial Dome. Also, thanks very much to The Celtic Media Festival for finding us a room to record in. We asked if there was an empty room somewhere and were provided with a 100+ seat cinema and, honestly, that's where I want to record all our interview episodes from now on.You can follow Charlotte on Instagram at @charlotteberman91 and you can send us a message on [email protected] or contact us on one of the following...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoveritTheme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay. If you're in London, Gareth Gwynn is appearing with his show Cyril at the Camden Fringe from 28-30 July. Tickets are available now.Esyllt Sears is on BBC One Wales' Live From Merthyr Tydfil which is available on BBC iPlayer now.Esyllt Sears grew up in Aberyswyth, but what does she remember of one of the most audacious crimes committed in the town during the summer of 2000? That's when £70,000 worth of pages from antique atlases were stolen from the National Library of Wales - but how did they do it? And how long does it take for anyone to notice a 17th Century map has gone missing? We also discuss the naming of the Ford Escort and, bringing it to the present day, the latest goings on in Cafe Diana. The article is here, should you be interested in the details. In some ways, his is a little bit of an unofficial "Part 1" since, next week, we'll be joined by Charlotte Berman from The Traitors where we'll touch upon July 2000 all over again with the launch of the first Big Brother UK - And who better to lift the lid on reality TV than someone who spent several weeks in The Traitors Castle?! May 1978 (Unsubscribe)

A more sensible title for this episode would have been "Spam", but I'm not going to risk it getting algorithmically marked, blocked and binned - so I've gone for something else. May 1978 saw the first ever unwanted mass-email and the first ever early May Bank Holiday in the UK which was, surprisingly, similarly poorly received - and all this happened to a backdrop of Boney M.There's loads of additional viewing/listening for this one, so once you've finished, feel free to get stuck-in to the following...* The full story of Charlie Chaplin's grave was covered in our March 1978 episode.* For more on Boney M check out our interview with writer and star of the Mary's Boy Child video - the very funny Anna Jordan.* And if you want to see people moaning about being given a day off, check out this BBC video of the first May Day Bank Holiday. April 1991 (Big Break and Buses)

Since changing the podcast name (RIP The Xennial Dome, 2021-24) we don't bother ourselves too much with generational differences on the show too much - But what happened to children's fiction about runaways? They were everywhere, right? Was it deemed dangerous to fill kid's heads with these stories? Did they go the way of smoking, catapaults and the nicknames of some of the Bash Street Kids? It's one of the things we consider as Esyllt Sears boils April 1991 down the essentials - The Greyhound Bus and Big Break.Tickets for I'm So Not Over It at Machynlleth Comedy Festival are available now!Check out Eyllt's appearence on Crushed with Margaret Cabourn-Smith.Get in touch by email on [email protected] or through one of the following social media accounts...BlueSky: @imsonotoveritInstagram: @imsonotoveritTikTok: @imsonotoveritTheme music by Alex_Kizenkov from Pixabay.I'm So Not Over It is A Mighty Bunny Production. Plus, Esyllt Sears expresses her concerns about Fairy Liquid and Quality Street - on the off chance someone who listens can do something about it.There's an episode of Trouble At The Top all about the 1980s New Coke disaster, which you can watch here.Upcoming wedding? April 1989 (Spontaneous Human Combustion)

Think about it - when was the last time you heard people talk about Spontaneous Human Combustion? It's been a while hasn't it? It's just not the sort of thing you talk about in polite company once you stop being a teenager or leave the 1990s or, worst of all, both.As such, this episode might not be for everyone as Esyllt Sears revisits the glory days of SHC, recommends a 1980s BBC documentary on the subject and doesn't recommend an Independent article on the same topic (you can search for that yourself). And talking of unexpected, explosive events, we also cover the time someone swore at Five Star on Going Live! Yeah, we're clicking the "explicit" button on this one. You'd think there would be the potential for a bit of personal insight in this show since Gareth Gwynn worked on Top Gear (for a tiny bit) and we suspect we're all related to Richard III (one way or another) - but it's probably not enough. Gareth wasn't around TG for the infamous Clarkson/Steak showdown (but may have profited from its aftermath!) and Richard III-wise, the moment they stop sticking numbers after your name, family trees are hard to keep track of. Nevertheless, there's some details about the Top Gear Test Track, should you ever find yourself on it, and Gareth tells you who The Stig is. Looking at our episode title now, I refuse to believe we are the first people to use that pun. After all, Eric Cantona kicked that Crystal Palace fan during the glory days of the tabloid press - back when you could write a pun like that, go home and enjoy your six figure salary (I expect).
