Understanding Calm vs Relaxed in Racing: The CRC Triangle and Optimizing Performance

Greg from motorsportmind - bringing you the INNER RACING Podcast! This month, I wanted to share a couple of insights that have been coming up in my conversations with drivers and riders—insights that might just give you the edge on both the track and in your day-to-day mental game. Calm vs. Relaxed: What’s the Difference? Have you ever wondered if being calm and being relaxed are the same thing? Turns out, they aren’t—at least not when it comes to high performance. Calmness is about being in control, especially under pressure. You might still feel stress or adrenaline before a race, but when you’re calm, you’re handling it—you’re mentally ready to make decisions, anticipate situations, and perform at your best. Relaxation feels different. There’s a certain ease to it, which might not always be appropriate right before a competition. Too relaxed, and you might not have that sharpness you need on the grid. When you’re about to get on track, aim to be calm—not just relaxed. Breathwork and mental prep can help bring you into that controlled state. If you focus on calmness, relaxation often follows, but at the right intensity for peak performance. Your True Responsibility on Race Day Another topic we dug into: What are you actually responsible for when you go racing? The answer: your performance. Not the result. You are responsible for maximizing your skills—technically, physically, and mentally. That’s your job. Results are a team effort and often depend on many factors outside your control, including competitors. Focus on continual improvement—identify what you need to stop, start, or do more of in all three performance pillars. When you focus solely on your own performance, you’ll always have one person to beat: yourself. That clarity makes it easier to grow and succeed, no matter the outcome. Thanks for tuning in this week—keep working on that mental edge, and remember: it’s all about performance. Here are some key takeaways from the episode: ### 1. **Behavioral Flexibility: The Game-Changer** Greg explains that the key to success is adaptability. This mindset is essential for staying ahead in any competitive field. ### 2. **Understanding Filters: Seeing Beyond Biases** We all experience the world through filters shaped by our biases and experiences. Greg discusses the importance of recognizing these filters, which include deletions, generalizations, and distortions. Being aware of them can help you better understand yourself and communicate effectively with others. ### 3. **Communication: Bridging the Gap** Greg highlights a critical aspect of communication—the difference between what's said and what's heard. Maximizing Racing Performance: Competence Over Confidence?

In this episode of the "motorsportmind" podcast, titled "Confidence vs. Competence," host Greg delves deep into the distinctions between confidence and competence, particularly in the context of motorsport racing. He challenges the common emphasis on confidence by proposing that competence—being skilled and knowledgeable—is more reliable and desirable. Throughout the episode, Greg discusses how confidence is actually a set of beliefs and not a tangible thing, describing it as a nominalization. He supports his argument by referencing a quote from a stunt scene involving Tom Cruise, which emphasizes competence over caution. Greg also touches on the psychological aspects of performance, citing examples from golfing to illustrate how misplaced self-belief can deter practice and improvement, suggesting that actual skill (competence) and the outcomes it produces are more important. He encourages listeners to rigorously train in the technical, physical, and mental pillars of racing to enhance competency, which in turn will naturally boost confidence due to increased predictability in outcomes. Finally, Greg concludes by advising listeners to actively work on enhancing their competence in three aspects of each performance pillar to better their overall racing abilities and results, promising that this approach will lead to genuine, substantial confidence built on solid ground of proven competence.

    Racing Smarter NOT Harder...

In this episode, Greg dives into the concept of working smarter, not harder, and how it applies to the world of motorsport. He starts by drawing a parallel to his background as a nutritional coach and shares an interesting conversation he had with a driver about intermittent fasting and biohacking pioneer, Dave Asprey. Dave, known for developing Bulletproof Coffee and authoring books like "Smarter, not harder," emphasizes the importance of mental skills in translating technique into real-world performance. Greg goes on to explain how your mental skills have a significant impact on your ability to reproduce and deliver the skills you've honed. While it's essential to continuously improve your technique through testing and simulation, Greg reminds us that the key to success lies in our mental preparedness. He also highlights the relevance of focusing on recovery, especially during back-to-back race weekends, to avoid stagnation in performance. Furthermore, Greg discusses the significance of planning and being calm in racing situations. By studying competitors, setting goals, and maintaining emotional stability, drivers can make smarter decisions on the track and achieve optimum performance. He emphasizes the need to tap into unconscious competence, allowing us to perform without overthinking or trying too hard. In summary, the episode encourages listeners to contemplate their approach to racing and consider how they can become smarter rather than relying solely on sheer effort. By maximizing mental skills, staying calm, setting goals, and avoiding emotional extremes, drivers can enhance their performance consistently. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Rituals & Routines in Racing?

🏁 Rituals and Routines: How They Impact Your Racing Performance 🏁 In this month's episode of #inner racing by motorsportmind, I explore the power of rituals and routines and their impact on our racing performance. Whether it's the daily rituals we follow or the rituals we have on race weekends, they play a crucial role in creating structure and familiarity that can enhance our performance on the track. Here are 3 key takeaways from the episode: 1️⃣ Certainty and Reassurance: Our unconscious mind loves certainty and rituals provide just that. By establishing a routine, we bypass decision fatigue and create reassurance, allowing us to focus on our racing performance without getting overwhelmed by constant decision-making. 2️⃣ Forming Anchors: Rituals can serve as powerful anchors that help us set our mental and emotional state before getting on the track. From touching specific parts of the car to performing certain actions, these rituals help us create a sense of familiarity and boost our confidence. 3️⃣ Creating Structure: Racing is an uncertain and unpredictable sport, with various unknown factors competing against us. Rituals help create structure in our racing weekends, from the setup process to signing on and attending safety briefings. This structure brings a sense of familiarity and helps us manage the unknowns with more clarity. So, if you're a driver or rider, let's embrace the power of rituals and routines to enhance our performance on the track! Don't just reserve rituals for the holiday season, but also incorporate them into your racing endeavors. Tune in to the full podcast episode to dive deeper into the topic. Performance vs Results?

In this episode of motorsportmind, join host Greg McColl as he dives into the intriguing topic of MM Performance vs Results. In this episode, Greg explores the concept of outcome focus and discusses why it is crucial for motorsport enthusiasts to prioritize their performance over the final results. Greg starts off by explaining the natural inclination to solely focus on race standings and how this mindset can be counterproductive. To avoid getting entangled in win-lose scenarios and binary outcomes, Greg encourages race enthusiasts to set different levels of results for a weekend, such as okay, good, great, and amazing. This mindset allows for a broader range of achievable success and helps maintain a positive perspective. Throughout the episode, Greg stresses the importance of not comparing oneself to others and not investing everything in a binary outcome. He argues against setting goals in the traditional sense, viewing them as pass or fail, and instead advocate for a focus on personal growth and learning from every situation. Join Greg on this thought-provoking episode of motorsportmind as he inspire listeners to shift their mindset towards prioritizing performance, improving processes, and ultimately outperforming themselves. Tune in to discover how this mindset shift can lead to higher chances of success and improvements in performance.
