The better choice(Luke 10:38-42; John 11:25-27)Continuing from what we heard and learned from this Sunday’s teaching, I have been reflecting on the difference between doing what is good and choosing what is better.There is a difference between doing good things and choosing the best thing.Martha loved Jesus. Her desire to serve Him was sincere, and there was nothing wrong with serving. Yet, in the middle of her preparations, she became distracted and overwhelmed. Mary, on the other hand, simply sat at Jesus’ feet and listened. Looking at the two sisters, Jesus said that Mary had chosen the better part.Jesus was not diminishing service. He was establishing a priority. Before we can effectively serve Him, we must first spend time with Him.This lesson becomes even more meaningful when we meet Martha again in John 11. Her brother Lazarus had died, and grief filled her heart. Standing before the tomb, Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25). Then He asked Martha, “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26).Jesus wasn’t simply asking Martha if she believed His words intellectually. He was inviting her to place her complete trust in Him. We can only fully believe the One with whom we consistently spend time. Faith grows as we sit under His Word, listen to His voice, and allow His truth to shape our hearts. The more we remain at His feet, the more confident we become in His promises.The faith Martha needed in that painful moment did not begin at the tomb. Faith is formed long before the crisis. It grows in the quiet moments of fellowship with Christ. Every time we choose His presence over our busyness, we are preparing our hearts for the challenges that will inevitably come.The same is true for us. Trials reveal what has been built in the secret place. If our days are filled with activity, even good activity, while neglecting time with Jesus, we may discover that our faith is shallow when life becomes difficult. But those who have learned to abide in Him find a strength that circumstances cannot take away.Every day presents us with a choice. We can become consumed with what needs to be done, or we can first give our attention to the One who gives us strength to do it. The better choice is always His presence.May we never become so busy serving Jesus that we neglect sitting with Him. Time at His feet is never wasted. Every person eventually comes to a crossroads in life.It is a moment when the road behind you cannot be walked again, and the road ahead is unclear. Sometimes we arrive there because life becomes difficult. Yet it is precisely there, at that lonely crossroads, that God reveals something extraordinary, a divine stairway reaching from earth to heaven. At that place Jacob saw the vision of Angels ascending and descending.

Life has a way of shaping how we see things. At times our circumstances become so overwhelming that they begin to control our perspective. When problems pile up, when fear creeps in, and when situations seem impossible, it is easy to believe that what we see with our natural eyes is the whole story.But Scripture reminds us that what we see is not always the full picture. God is always at work, even when His hand is not immediately visible.In 2 Kings 6:13–17, Elisha’s servant looked out and saw an enemy army surrounding them. From his perspective, defeat seemed inevitable. Fear took over because all he could see was the threat in front of him.But Elisha saw something different.He prayed, “Lord, open his eyes so that he may see.” In that moment, God opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire and the armies of heaven surrounding and protecting them.The situation had not changed.But his perspective did.Often the greatest battle we face is not the problem itself, but how we see the problem. When we only look with our natural eyes, fear grows. But when God opens our spiritual eyes, we begin to see His presence, His protection, and His power at work.This message reminds us that God is always doing more than we realize. Many of us are held back—not by physical chains—but by fear of what others think, craving approval, or fear of rejection. We know we’re called to live boldly for God, but we get stuck—trapped by fear.Proverbs 29:25 warns us clearly:“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”

Fear is no respecter of persons. No matter how strong your faith, how high you’ve risen, or how far you’ve come, fear can still find its way into the heart. Even the greatest among us — prophets, kings, and apostles — have faced moments where fear threatened to overtake them. Fear may be inevitable, but so is the power of our God to overcome it. And praise God — through Him, we are not called to be slaves to fear!
