In the first segment of this episode, Margo and Tashira discuss Luigi Mangione, who is suspected of murdering the CEO of United Healthcare. They then shift to a conversation about Daniel Penny, whose involvement in the negligent homicide of a homeless person led to an invitation to meet the President-elect at the Army-Navy football game. We are then joined by Dr. Nicole Bedera, author of "On the Wrong Side." Dr. Bedera is a sociologist and cofounder of the antiviolence consulting practice Beyond Compliance. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan. She has spent more than a decade studying sexual violence and advocating for survivors in media outlets including the New York Times, NPR, and Harper's BAZAAR. The debate over campus sexual violence is more heated than ever, but hardly anyone knows what actually happens inside Title IX offices. On the Wrong Side provides the first comprehensive account of the inner workings of the secretive Title IX system. Drawing on a yearlong study of survivors, perpetrators, and the administrators who oversaw their cases, sociologist Nicole Bedera exposes the structures that predictably punish survivors who come forward in the service of protecting—or even rewarding—their perpetrators. In doing so, she reveals that the system tasked with ending gender inequality on campus only intensifies it, upending survivors' lives and threatening the degrees that brought them to college in the first place. "On the Wrong Side brings much-needed clarity to the discourse about sexual violence and accountability in higher education. Bedera sets the record straight about the reality of rape culture and institutional betrayal in our academic institutions with a compelling blend of research, theory, and survivor stories. This book is necessary reading for survivors, college administrators, and anyone interested in the relationship between rape culture and powerful institutions. In this episode, Tashira tells us the story about how she recently got engaged! Margo presses her on the implications for her title as the High Priestess of THOTlandia, but Tashira cannot be shaken and will not give up the crown. This was a big surgery, but one that I am eternally grateful for. I went from having a tremendously high risk of contracting breast cancer (in fact they found DCIS cells during my pathology), to a virtually 0 risk. One downside, however, is that I have lost most feeling sensation in the affected areas of my body, including signals like "Margo, your clothes are falling off." :) This offers us an opportunity to talk about one of the many realities of being in survivorship.
