Happy October 1st and welcome back to Kinda Radical!  Today's episode shares one not so radical take, one KINDA RADICAL take, and one super radical take. Through another solo episode, I talk about the gender wage gap, lifting up boys for gender equality, and ponder the question does more women in international office mean less war?  Feeling inspired? Angry? Am I too radical for you? Not radical enough? Let me know @kinda_radical on instagram!

Ep. 21: Language and storytelling and lesbian pirates

"Above all else this podcast is a vessel to tell stories about women, by women, and for women."    On this episode of Kinda Radical we talk about marked vs unmarked language and how that translates into our everyday conversations, gendering, and speech. Then I share the story of Mongolian warrior Khutulun who wrestles over 100 men to keep her freedom before coming one of the best warriors in Mongol history. This story inspired me to share the biographies of nine other historical women from The Book of Women written by Lynne Griffin and Kelly McCann.    For more research on Khutulun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weryT_lXS9I The Book of Women: https://www.amazon.com/Book-Women-Notable-History-Passed/dp/1558501061 Kinda Radical Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kinda_radical/

Ep. 20: Women in Sports part 7: Science

GOTCHA! There's a bonus episode today! The 7th and (truly) last part of the Women in Sports series comes to an end today with our science episode. Joined by Abby McIntyre of FASTR, a Stanford based research group focused on female athlete research to improve athlete output, health, and education about their bodies and sport, today we talk all things science.  Do you know what the Female Athlete Triad is? Ever heard of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport? FASTR works hard to understand the working bodies of female athletes - and even harder to educate the next generation of gold medal athletes.  Check out their website: https://fastr.stanford.edu/whatwedo/ Check out their instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stanfordfastr/ Kinda Radical Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kinda_radical/

Ep. 19: Women in Sports part 6: Rugby

Heard the buzz? Rugby is all the rage. Get caught up on the women's Olympic performance including their first medal in the sport, what this means for rugby in the US, and what struggles have brought them to this point. Karee Helgerson is our guest today walking us through her rugby career - highs and lows of a sport not so popular in our country. How can an entire university erase 3 national championships? We don't know either, but that's exactly what happened to Karee, her coach, and her teammates - including Ilona Maher bronze medalist for the US Olympic Rugby team.    To catch clips and footage of this episode check out the instragram @kinda_radical    Please note that in the 59th minute, the name Nicole Haverford should be corrected to Nicole Heavirland.

Ep. 18: Women in Sports part 5: Triathlon

Another month, another episode of Kinda Radical! The Olympics are officially underway and the Women in Sports series continues with its fifth installment: Triathlon.  Today I am joined by Erika Ackerlund, a triathlete from Montana who competes for the US National Triathlon Team. We talk about how she got into the sport, what her training is like, where she has raced around the world, and how triathlon doesn't see gender, only athletes.  For more on Erika: https://www.instagram.com/erikaackerlund/?hl=en For more on Kinda Radical: https://www.instagram.com/kinda_radical/?hl=en

Ep. 17: Women in Sports part 4: Media

Making our way through the Women in Sports series in preparation for the 2024 Summer Olympics with this new episode Women in Sports part 4: Media, with special guest Paityn Tabor. Paityn is a media coordinator for the new USL W league, she is a teammate, a captain, and a storyteller.  Today we discuss the impact of media in sports, the differences between men and women's media coverage and reporting, the hard fought quest for respect AND prime time (but since we clearly have to pick one or the other, which one is it?), and we answer the question: have women's sports 'made it' when more men watch? Hint: no.    Follow the Kinda Radical instagram @kinda_radical to see updates on my community involvement, new episode posts, and video clips of the pod!
