Paul really tells it like it is from the experiences he was encountering as an apostle. He was hassled in every area of his life. It’s hard to conceive what he had to deal with on a daily basis. Yet he was an overcomer, and he never quit serving the Lord, no matter how hard it got. This chapter teaches perseverance in the midst of adversity. Not basic everyday kinds of adversity , but major, intense warfare adversity. The Lord was always with him as he went through these times and he talked about these things, not for sympathy, but to help all of us who go through difficult times in life to know how to get through it by the grace of God in the power of The Holy Spirit.

Previously, in chapter 4, God the Father was praised with a song as the creator and sustainer of all things. Here in chapter 5, After Jesus takes the scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fall down before the lamb and sing a new song of praise to the lamb for His sacrifice for our sins and redeeming us to God by His blood. The thousands upon thousands of voices praising and worshiping the lamb is another evidence of the deity of Jesus Christ, and His equality with the Father. As the redeemed of the Lord, we too now have a new song in our mouths, praises to our God.

In chapter four, John’s focus was on the one who sat on the throne, God the Father. Here in chapter five he turns his attention to the scroll which is in the hand of the Father. When the mighty angel asked who was worthy to open the scroll and read it, no one in heaven, in earth, or under the earth was worthy. The scroll contains God’s title deed for the earth - both His wrath and plan for redemption. Judgment and redemption is of the Lord only, because Jesus alone suffered, died, was buried and rose again for our sins. He is worthy to bring righteous judgment upon unbelievers and to redeem the believers.
