LSU's twelve points a game is the most-quoted number of the week and the least examined. The Tigers beat Clemson 51-10 and Louisiana Tech 45-14. Clemson then scored a single touchdown against Georgia Southern in a 22-7 win. Bill Flowers extends the point in the direction nobody wants to go: we don't know how good Ole Miss's defense is either. But Ole Miss has already been punched in the mouth this season, and that is information LSU does not yet have about itself.2. The blueprint is inverted from what you'd expect. Flowers does not say establish the run and then take your shots. He says the deep ball is what buys the run: "If we do not create a deep ball early and often, it's going to be hard for us to establish the run the way that we want." Four days from LSU, the two men at the center of the biggest story in college football spent Monday complimenting each other into the ground — and that should worry Ole Miss fans more than a grudge would. Pete Golding, asked about facing the staff he worked for for three and a half years, compared it to a round of golf with your buddies. Lane Kiffin opened his own press conference by deflating the entire premise: "Pete's not gonna tackle anybody. I'm not gonna throw any touchdowns." Then Kiffin told the story of Nick Saban interviewing Golding and calling it the most impressive interview he had ever seen. And each of them handed the other the advantage — Kiffin says the familiarity favors Ole Miss because Golding spent three years hearing what Kiffin hates to play against, and Golding says knowing somebody that well is a trap that makes you overthink. One calls it a weapon. The other calls it a trap. Same three and a half years. Then the part of this week that nobody outside Mississippi has explained properly: why Ole Miss fans are actually angry. It is not about losing a coach. Ole Miss has not won an SEC championship since 1963, and 2025 was finally the year — a playoff run, a pass away from playing for everything. And instead of getting to enjoy November and December, this fan base spent it watching planes to Gainesville and Baton Rouge and a coach working the portal. Saturday is closure. Then the sentence of the week. Kiffin on Ole Miss: "You're talking about the best-playing quarterback, running back, and kicker in the country, coming back." All three, one breath, kicker included. He called Trinidad Chambliss the best-playing quarterback in the country last season, compared the Chambliss–Kewan Lacy backfield to Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, and told his own locker room the pressure is not on them. Every word of it is true, and true is exactly what makes it work. And then the players, who are the only people in Mississippi who have already moved on. Chambliss on the entire circus: "It's going to be a crazy weekend in Oxford, but it's just another game." On seeing his old head coach: "It's going to be weird. It is what it is." He has been with Pete Golding and John David Baker every day for eight months. John Fourcade joins Locked On Ole Miss with LSU five days out, and he starts where the fanbase is loudest: the secondary. His read is not the one you have been hearing. "If a guy's not covering a guy he's supposed to cover, that's a blown assignment. That's not athletic ability." Game day, and the biggest Saturday of the young season. Mississippi State-Minnesota, Texas-Ohio State, Oklahoma-Michigan — three conference-versus-conference results that will still be getting cited in November when the committee is separating teams with the same record. Go 3-0 and the SEC gets the benefit of the doubt. Go 0-3 and it doesn't. On Texas and Ohio State: the Longhorns outgained the Buckeyes 336 to 203 in Columbus last season and lost 14-7, because the offense couldn't finish in the red zone. What's different now is help — Hollywood Smothers from NC State and Cam Coleman from Auburn. On Michigan: Bryce Underwood threw for 170 yards against Western Michigan, and 47 of those came on the play after the game should have ended. Todd Wade: I've Never Seen Anything Like Trinidad At Ole Miss | Keys to Charlotte Ole Miss legend Todd Wade watched the Louisville tape twice, and he came back with the most specific diagnosis anybody has offered of what's wrong with the Ole Miss running game. His read: pass protection was excellent — Trinidad Chambliss got hit a couple of times and that's football — but the run game is stalemates and turn-back blocking rather than drive blocking. And he corrected the popular explanation along the way. The story going around is that Ole Miss linemen were early or late getting to the second level. Wade says that's a symptom: on a combo block you have to get movement on the down lineman before you worry about the linebacker, and when you don't, it's the defensive lineman who blows the play up, not the linebacker. The fix is fundamental — play lower, and let your body travel down with that first step. Also from a man who was on the roster in 1997: asked whether he'd ever seen an Ole Miss quarterback make a more NFL-level throw than Chambliss's first touchdown against Louisville, his entire answer was "No. I don't think we've ever seen anything like him at Ole Miss." Plus why Chambliss's scrambling is different from most quarterbacks who run — he's a late, smart runner, and at that point he's effectively an All-SEC running back. On the offensive line personnel: Tommy Kinzler started at right tackle and went out, and Wade thought the replacement was seamless — confident, no mental errors, no drop-off he could find on a second viewing. Then the disagreement worth listening to. Steven suggested a good number of players will have one eye on LSU this week. Ole Miss is a 47.5-point favorite over Charlotte in Saturday's home opener, so this isn't a show about who wins. It's about what a win has to look like. Steven Willis makes the case that there's a version of Saturday where Ole Miss wins by 35 and it's still a bad night — and lays out how to tell the difference. Charlotte comes to Vaught-Hemingway on Saturday as a 47.5-point underdog — the biggest number in the program's history, bigger than the spread when they went to No. 1 Clemson in 2019. Steven Willis is joined by Hunter Bailey of the Highway 49 podcast, who has covered the 49ers since 2018, for the Know Your Enemy crossover. The headline: Charlotte lost at home to The Citadel, 43-41, as a 20-point favorite. But the way they lost is the scouting report. The Citadel ran for 260-plus yards on them — an FCS school — and did all of it after halftime, scoring touchdowns on their first three second-half drives. And on third and fourth down, The Citadel dialed up cover-zero blitzes that worked. Charlotte's defense is a run defense problem first. They gave up 260-plus on the ground to The Citadel and could not get a stop in the second half after looking fine in the first. They run a 4-2-5. The front seven has real pieces — DJ Burgess on the edge, a Mississippi kid at around 270, and North Carolina transfer Devin Ancrum inside — and Gavin Willis, No. 13, wears the green dot and gets downhill well. But the group as a whole is unproven, and they gave up over 35 a game last season. 2. The blitz tape is the useful tape. The Citadel got to Cole Gonzalez with cover zero on third and fourth down and it worked more than once. Charlotte's left tackle, Javen Williams, is a big body at 325 who spent two injury-shortened seasons at Penn State — last Saturday was the first college football he has ever played. Gonzalez is six foot, around 200 pounds, and Bailey's read was that the pressure got to him. He threw two interceptions, both on screens at the line of scrimmage. 3. What Charlotte actually wants to do: win first down, get to second and short, and run play-action out of an identical look. They were nine of ten on play-action against The Citadel and near-perfect in the screen game. They live in the pistol and the shotgun and almost never go under center, even in short yardage. The two names to know are Gonzalez at quarterback and No. 1 Jayden Barnes, an App State transfer who led the team in targets. His question for the season: does Pete Golding put his own stamp on this team, or does he spend the year distancing himself from Kiffin? As Flowers puts it, Kiffin is a great coach for a reason, but he also has characteristics you do not want to carry forward.2. Caleb Odom is why Deuce Alexander got loose. Everybody points at Odom's 35-yard touchdown. The play that mattered was the 18-yard catch on the game-winning drive, and he got it because that secondary was locked onto number one. Flowers explains the mechanism: put the tight end up the seam and the safety has to come down, and the moment a safety comes down you are exposed to a receiver running 23 miles an hour. Pick your poison. Once Ole Miss started using Odom, the momentum of the whole offense changed.3. Charlotte is a scrimmage and everybody knows it. Charlotte lost to The Citadel in overtime. Ole Miss is laying 47.5 in the home opener. A federal judge hears the SEC's arguments for a temporary restraining order against LSU at 1 p.m. Wednesday — and granting it may clear the path for the conference's expulsion vote scheduled for Thursday. Ole Miss is the first domino. LSU has not played a conference game — they opened against Clemson. Their first SEC game on the schedule is the one in Vaught-Hemingway on September 19. That makes this the cheapest week of the season to expel them: no conference results to void, no standings to rewrite. It also means whatever those presidents decide lands on Ole Miss first. Four outcomes for the 19th: conference game, non-conference game, played under protest, or no game. 2. Golding refused to sell the win. "Yes, the outcome was 1-0. But if you're just looking at that and not looking at the guts of this thing, then we're going to be on the other side of this before too long." He ruled out the frightening explanation for the secondary — "their Jimmies are better than our Joes, that's a bad feeling… that wasn't this" — and named the real one: day-one camp calls that weren't communicated. Asked about Johntay Cook, he said plainly he was surprised, and that it has to be corrected. 3. Caleb Odom couldn't see. He explained that bad vision he never got fixed was behind last season's drops. The first half wasn't dominant, it was lucky. Fourcade's read is that if Louisville's quarterback completes two more throws early, this is a different football game — the secondary had busted coverages in the first half too, and the scoreboard hid it. He tied it directly to the lack of live tackling in summer practice, and to a habit he sees everywhere now: players wrapping up from the waist trying to strip the ball instead of putting the runner on the ground.2. Stop running inside zone. His argument is specific — a back set five or six yards deep in the gun lets a defender sit at the line and watch the handoff. He wants off-tackle runs and the stretch play, which lets the back bounce and cut back, and which pulls the tight end in as an extra blocker. Then you fake the stretch and hit that tight end down the middle. His question for the staff: why did it take a half to start throwing to the tight ends at all?3. What he liked. The defensive front rotation, six or seven linemen who can play a full game, and a linebacker group he called genuinely good. Ole Miss 41, Louisville 38. Lucas Carneiro from 48 yards as time expired. The No. 9 Rebels led 38-24 in the fourth quarter, gave up 14 straight points, and needed an 18-yard Trinidad Chambliss completion to Caleb Odom to set up the game-winner. The two teams combined for more than 600 yards of offense in the second half alone. Ole Miss beat a ranked team playing nowhere near its best football. All week the conversation on this show was about a group nobody previews — Lucas Carneiro, Oscar Bird and Caleb Blankenship all returning, while Louisville still had not named a kicker or a punter two days before kickoff. A three-point game ended on a 48-yard field goal, held by the punter. That was the clearest edge on the field and it was the one almost nobody was talking about. What went wrong, and it isn't a mystery. Turnovers, penalties and communication problems in the first half — the exact thing Pete Golding volunteered about his own mock game a week ago. Then a 14-point fourth-quarter lead handed back to a coach who has beaten a top-ten team in each of the last three seasons. What actually held up. Caleb Odom becoming a factor was a stated key going into the game and he made the play that won it. Deuce Alexander, the only returning primary receiver, went 62 yards for a touchdown. And a defense that gave up too much late still made enough plays in the first half to build the lead that survived. There was no next week and no clean ending, and that's what made eight months feel like a decade. 2. What's actually different now. Trinidad Chambliss is back, and last season Ole Miss was running a retrofitted offense built for somebody else while he operated it. This is the first year it's been built for him. Kewan Lacy is back after 306 carries, 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns, and John David Baker has already said he won't ask that of him twice. The defensive front is deeper than the 2024 group that everybody remembers. 3. What decides tonight. Louisville lost ten scholarship offensive linemen and returns one starter, while Jeff Brohm — who has beaten a top-ten team in each of the last three seasons — starts a quarterback making his first career start. Katz asked every coach and teammate what the craziest thing was they'd seen Lacy do on a field, and they all named the same play against South Oak Cliff — a run where he spun out of two tacklers, got to the perimeter, ran through two more, and had two more fall off him. The opposing head coach, who has three state titles and coached against Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford, called it one of the best plays he has seen a running back make. Katz also learned Lacy split carries as a Lancaster junior with Kyson Brown, now at Arizona State, and didn't become a national recruit until his senior year. 2. Why this defensive line is different from the 2024 group. That team had elite top-end talent — Walter Nolen, Princely Umanmielen, JJ Pegues, Jared Ivey — but a real drop-off when anyone came off the field. Katz's read on this year is depth: you can take Will Echoles out and not lose much. He also expects Echoles to be a first-round pick and thinks Kam Franklin will make a lot of money. 3. The structural reason a front seven wins games. When your three-technique and your nose demand double teams, four offensive linemen are occupied, the linebackers run free, and the ends get single-blocked. The injunction is misunderstood. The SEC's federal filing isn't an attempt to keep three players off the field. It's an attempt to win back the conference's ability to impose penalties — to get around the state-level order. LSU is sending two signals at once. The university president issued a statement saying LSU will follow the rules the SEC has set, which reads like an off-ramp. The pass protection was good all of last season. The push wasn't. They were playing too high. What he wants Sunday is a four-yard rush average and moving chains — not explosives — because that takes the pressure off Trinidad Chambliss and changes what defenses can do the rest of the way.3. Why he isn't panicked about right tackle. He expects Tommy Kinsler to settle in, and points out that Patrick Kutas next to him matters more than people realize — the guard makes a lot of the calls alongside the center, and having an experienced SEC veteran there gives a new tackle confidence. The SEC just announced it will comply with the restraining order. That is not a retreat. That's the trap — and the SEC set it.   Steven Willis is joined by Tom Vanderford, the Mayor of Corinth, for game week.   IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ Why complying is the play. Per Ross Dellenger, the SEC is complying. The whole goal is to get this into federal court — and if they get there, they win. And complying now doesn't mean no penalties later. As soon as this clears, they can hammer them: half a season per instance, half the sport's operating budget, the conference vote, and whatever else the commissioner adds. Tom Mars put it best: the SEC's position is like parking an RV in your driveway in an HOA — you can get a TRO, maybe a local injunction, but it won't hold up in any appeals court. "The SEC has a four-aces winner."   🏈 And here's the part LSU fans should actually worry about — because it happened to us. In 2022, Kiffin did this exact thing with Auburn, and Ole Miss wasn't inoculated against it. Blown out at Arkansas. Lost to Mississippi State — the only time in his entire tenure. Ole Miss has — this group survived December, and whatever's happening now feels like kindergarten.   🏀 Plus: I'm not a fan of what Chris Beard did. Ole Miss basketball took a commitment from a player with professional experience — and when a transfer graphic has the Utah Jazz on it, my ears perk up. The same trap that's about to close on LSU could close on Ole Miss. Half a season for Beard, half the basketball budget, the vote. My rule doesn't change because it points at us: there are no do-overs. No depth charts. No position-by-position walkthrough. Everybody else is doing that today and it's unwatchable. Three takes, and you can hold me to all three in January.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🏈 ONE: Ole Miss is going to win a game 17-13, and it'll be the most important win of the season. For a decade this program was an offense with a tag-along defense — score 40, hope they score 39. Kiffin built an amusement park and the ride was the offense. That's over. The number that tells the whole story, via Tom Vanderford: the 2025 transfer class was ~70% offense and 30% defense. This year it's about 50/50. That's an entire offseason in one number. And here's what it bought: you're no longer buying Great Value brand transfer portal targets. You can get the name brands now. A starter from Florida State, a starter from Georgia, a starter from Florida, a starter from Auburn. That's shopping at the big boy rack.   🎯 And the reason it matters, from a man I worked for. Coach Cutcliffe used to say: you never know when the play is going to happen that determines the outcome. You have to be ready every single play. Twenty years later, look at the Fiesta Bowl — a busted coverage and a missed tackle, both touchdowns. Two plays. Golding's ideal defense doesn't blitz — it generates pressure with four or fewer and drops everybody else. And that only works if the back five can hold up completely alone.   🚨 TWO: September 19 is a trap. GameDay in the Grove, Kiffin walking back in (if he's not suspended), $800 a ticket. But LSU is, best case, the fourth-best team Ole Miss plays this year. The season is decided at Texas — game 8, on the road, five games into conference play with no emotional lift left. And it's a homecoming: Johntay Cook started his career at Texas and is from DeSoto. Kewan Lacy is from Texas. Landon Barnes is out of Duncanville. I called Texas as a win back in July and I haven't moved off it.   🏔️ THREE: this is the best roster Ole Miss will have for three years. The rev-share cap is real. The roster limit is real. You can't do what Ole Miss did last offseason twice. Ceiling 12-0 — there isn't a bona fide loss on that schedule. Floor 9-3. And 9-3 is the version where you look back in January and realize the year got away by a possession here and a bad half there. It's not getting blown out that should scare you. It's getting close. What's the saying? People keep asking how I know so much about the Trinidad Chambliss case. Here's the answer: I watched the whole trial. With my own eyes. That isn't something I heard from somebody who heard it.   IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ What the case was actually about — and it isn't what anybody's saying. It was a medical redshirt. Chambliss got hurt at Ferris State, a Division II school. He qualified, he was going to get it, nobody disputed it at the time — four years ago. Here's where it went sideways: D-II medical-redshirt documentation standards are far less extensive than Division I's. So Ferris State, doing exactly what a D-II school is required to do, didn't keep the paperwork D-I would need. Not because anybody did anything wrong. Because they weren't required to. Then he transfers up and the NCAA applies a D-I standard to a D-II file.   🚨 And the part that should end this permanently: the NCAA admitted in open court that Chambliss EASILY cleared the bar. They conceded it. Out loud. Their position was never that he wasn't hurt or didn't qualify — only that the paperwork proving something everybody agreed on no longer existed. This wasn't a loophole. It was a filing cabinet.   📺 And if you think it was invented for a lawsuit: go find the broadcast of the 2024 Division II national championship, Ferris State vs. Valdosta State. They discussed the medical redshirt on the air — two years before this was a legal question, before anybody outside Big Rapids, Michigan knew who he was.   🧠 Then the argument itself. Everything above is checkable. And here's what comes back at me instead: he's been in college six years · rules are rules · everybody's cheating anyway · it's Ole Miss. Notice none of them is about the redshirt. Nobody has told me the D-II standard is the same as D-I. Nobody has said the NCAA didn't concede it. Nobody has gone and found the broadcast. They're not disagreeing with facts. They're having a feeling and working backward. And that feeling is real — I'm not mocking anybody for it. But a feeling is not an argument, and it doesn't become one because a lot of people share it.   🏈 Plus the fun one. The SEC announced what happens if you break their new rule against pro players. It's worse than anybody expected.   IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ The penalties, one at a time — and each is worse than the last. Per Matt Norlander, CBS Sports. The head coach suspended half a season. Not the player — the coach. The school loses its voting privileges on SEC business matters — and that's a bigger deal than people realize. Say expansion comes up and the conference votes on whether Tulane gets in. You're not at the table. A fine of 50% of that sport's annual budget. Facilities money. Staff money. Half a season's operating budget, because you signed one guy. And the commissioner can add more on top — a championship ban, players ruled ineligible. They basically handed Sankey the death penalty.   🏛️ Then the part almost nobody is explaining correctly. Attorneys say the SEC is defying a court order and want the NCAA held in contempt for "cartel-like coordination." But they're not the same entity. The SEC isn't a subsidiary of the NCAA — it's its own organization with its own membership and its own rules. That's exactly why the Big Ten and the SEC could do this and get away with it. And the restraining order never mentioned the SEC once. Heitner calls it a "colorable argument" — and Tom Mars pointed out what that phrase means: something you fully believe that has almost no chance of passing.   ⚡ And the answer nobody's saying loudly enough: would a conference sue its own school? It already happened this summer. The Big 12 legally challenged Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby, in the middle of the night, and won. The precedent is three months old.   🏈 Plus the question about Trinidad Chambliss nobody's asking. Everything he's done in this league, he did as a surprise — no current film, no book, and for most of last year he was running a retrofitted Austin Simmons offense.   Now every coordinator has eight months and thirteen games of tape. Including Kiffin, who coached him.   🛡️ And the number that should make you feel better about that offensive line. Will Echoles had 26 pressures — most of any Power 4 defensive tackle. Interior pressure is the one thing you can't scheme around. Everybody's asked whether Ole Miss can protect the quarterback. Greg Sankey wrote down exactly what he was going to do months ago — under oath, in a case that had nothing to do with LSU. And I bet he's glad he did.   IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ The sentence nobody quotes. Sankey filed an affidavit supporting the NCAA in the Charles Bediako matter — the first player with college experience to sign an NBA contract and come back. In it he wrote that letting former pros return creates "a competitive disadvantage and fundamental unfairness" for athletes who didn't pursue a professional career. And then the second half: it's also unfair to the programs that operated inside the existing framework and therefore didn't go add a former professional athlete to their roster. It's unfair to the schools that followed the rules. That's the entire argument, on the record, before any of this touched LSU or Ole Miss.   📋 Declared, signed, or listed. The Big Ten went first — football only, and the penalty is a half-season suspension for the head coach plus a school fine. Not the player. The coach. Then the SEC went further: 16-0, covering men's and women's basketball too, and written so you can't argue your way through the gap. NFL, any other pro football league, NBA, G-League, WNBA or affiliate. All three doors at once.   🏈 And the position Kiffin is in this morning. For a week he told that roster it wasn't good enough — not in a press conference, but by going out and doing it. Now he has to convince the same group they're good enough after all. "You just told me last week I needed to be replaced. Now you need me to run through a wall for you against Clemson?" Ole Miss has been through this exact thing — 2022, 8-1, then four straight losses. The talent was still there in November. The belief went out of the building.   🏀 And it cost us too. Corey Stephenson — an 18-point scorer who signed an Exhibit 10 with Detroit and played four Summer League games — is ineligible. And that's the correct outcome. How bad does an idea have to be that every conference in America passes a rule against it inside 48 hours? The SEC dropped the hammer — 16-0, unanimous. Which means LSU voted for it. Steven Willis is joined live by Daylan Flowers and Tyler Komis for the Rebel Squad. IN THIS EPISODE: ⚖️ Sixteen to nothing. When this first got reported, 14 schools were locked in, one was unsure, and one was dug in — and the one dug in was LSU. By the vote it was unanimous, which tells you Greg Sankey's legal team put the information in front of them. And the rule is broader than people realize: NFL, NBA, G League, WNBA, CFL — any lettered professional league. The presidents gave Sankey unprecedented authority to enforce it: players ruled ineligible, schools fined, coaches suspended, programs barred from championships and playoffs. 🏀 And it cost Ole Miss too. Corey Stephenson, who committed to Chris Beard, signed a professional contract — he's ineligible under this rule. And that's the correct outcome. If there's a professional athlete on the Ole Miss roster, get them out. Texas signed Cole Hudson — get him out too. That's the whole point of having a rule. 🎯 The fairest read of the day came from Tyler Komis: Pete Golding would have used this rule to his advantage if he'd seen it benefiting his team. He just didn't see it. This isn't about Ole Miss being morally superior. It's that there are guardrails now, and they apply to everybody including us. 💔 And the question nobody has an answer to. Where does Dae'Quan Wright go from here? He was dressed out with Cleveland on a Saturday and committed to LSU on a Sunday. Per Football Scoop, there was recruiting from the LSU side to make it happen. A man with a sterling reputation — second-team All-SEC, stayed when Kiffin left, part of the team that beat Georgia — took a hit he didn't earn. 🏈 Plus the football. Golding named three freshmen he's impressed with and all three are defensive linemen: Jayden Curtis (the surprise of camp), Landon Barnes (out of Duncanville — the program that produced Colin Simmons), and Carmelo Reed. Flowers' comparison: this is Will Echoles and Kam Franklin in 2024 all over again. If this defensive line isn't tired in November and December, these are the three who bought that. Michael Katz asked Pete Golding whether Ole Miss had the FBI sweep the building for bugs. The first thing Golding said was "say that again" — with a smile on his face.   First He Said What?!? episode of the year. Golding talked for 25 minutes to close fall camp and gave us more usable material than any availability all month.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🚨 The FBI answer, parsed. Golding said he's not sure there was a hiring process. That they probably have a current player whose dad just so happens to work for the FBI and lives in town. That there was no measure of "oh my gosh, come in," from that standpoint — a phrase he used three separate times. Count the hedges. Then look at what he actually denied: a hiring process. Nobody said Ole Miss hired the FBI. Walker Jones said the FBI came through and walked the building. He denied the claim nobody made — and then handed over the mechanism himself.   🎯 Where I land, labeled as a read every time: I think a sweep happened. I don't think an official sweep happened. Probably closer to a dad who works for the Bureau walking a building than a formal engagement with a field office — and that distinction is exactly what Golding was standing on. He's not lying. He's being precise, and he wants the story smaller than it sounded. That's a coach doing his job, and I'd do the same thing 13 days out. And nothing was ever reported found — just because they searched doesn't mean it was there.   🏈 "Everybody doesn't get a my bad." Golding on where this team actually is. The scrimmages have been flashy — enough on tape where you go, that's winning football. And then: same unit, same dudes, same calls, and that's not it. Drive by drive, every drive was extended or stopped by a non-aggressive penalty or a bust.
