EP 71: Undoing Aloneness - Healing Overwhelm Through Connection

You can be surrounded by people… and still feel completely alone inside your experience. In this episode of Loving Everything, I sit down with therapist Kelly Pratt to explore a concept at the heart of real healing: undoing aloneness. Because most people don't just struggle with anxiety, grief, or overwhelm. They struggle alone. Alone inside their experience. Alone inside their emotions. Alone inside their nervous system. And that's what keeps suffering in place. Kelly's work is grounded in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), where healing doesn't happen through fixing or analyzing—it happens through being deeply accompanied. In this conversation, we explore what overwhelm actually is, how it forms, and what begins to shift when someone no longer has to hold it alone. We also move beyond theory and into experience, with a live, guided moment in session that shows what this work feels like in real time. In this episode, we discuss: • What "undoing aloneness" actually means in therapy and in real life • Why overwhelm is often a relational experience, not just an internal one • How the nervous system changes in the presence of safe connection • The difference between explaining emotions and actually feeling them • Why self-reliance and intellectualizing can keep people stuck • How emotional accompaniment reduces overwhelm physiologically • What people truly need—but rarely receive—when they're struggling • How to stay present with pain without trying to fix or bypass it This conversation is for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed… and alone inside it. You don't have to do this alone.  — About Kelly Pratt: Kelly Pratt is a Professional Counselor Associate specializing in AEDP, somatic therapy, IFS, and relational healing. EP70: Why Do We Fall In Love

We're told it's about chemistry. About connection. About finding the right person. But that's only part of the story. In this solo episode of Loving Everything, I break down what's actually happening when we fall in love— from attachment and neuroscience to the deeper psychological truth most people don't talk about: You're not just falling in love with someone else. You're falling in love with who you become in their presence. This episode explores the difference between falling in love and staying in love, why intensity can be mistaken for intimacy, and how early attachment patterns shape who we're drawn to, and why. We also look at heartbreak differently. Not as a failure. But as information. Because the way a relationship ends often reveals more than how it begins. In this episode, we cover: • Why we are biologically wired to fall in love • The role of dopamine, oxytocin, and attachment • Why chemistry doesn't equal compatibility • The difference between falling in love and staying in love • What actually creates long-term connection • Why some relationships feel intense but don't move forward • How heartbreak reveals patterns, not just loss • What it means to choose yourself without closing your heart This is not about becoming cynical about love. It's about understanding it clearly—so you can participate in it differently. — About Loving Everything: Loving Everything is a podcast exploring relational healing, trauma, identity, and meaning-making through long-form, in-person conversations with clinicians, educators, and thought leaders. — Find out more: https://andrea.love — All production by Cody Maxwell Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy

E69: Midwifing the Grief Heart - Love, Loss, and Life's Thresholds

In this episode of Loving Everything, I sit down with KP Parks—therapist, healer, and midwife of the heart—for a conversation about grief, transformation, and what it means to stay present in the face of life's most profound thresholds. KP brings a deeply integrative approach to their work, shaped by over 25 years of lived experience with grief, a background in midwifery, and a commitment to walking alongside people—not as an expert or fixer, but as a guide. Together, we explore grief not as something to resolve or move past, but as something that lives with us, in the body, in the nervous system, and across the lifespan. We talk about: • Grief as a lifelong companion rather than a problem to solve • How loss reshapes the nervous system, memory, and sense of safety • Why grief can feel like a survival response—long after the loss • The role of ritual, creativity, and embodiment in healing • Identity shifts, queerness, and navigating life transitions • What it means to "midwife" someone through change, rather than fix them • Staying human, open, and connected in a world shaped by impermanence This conversation moves beyond clinical language and into something more human—an honest exploration of love, loss, and the spaces in between. KP works with grief, trauma, life transitions, and identity-based healing, offering care that is relational, somatic, spiritual, and deeply attuned. Their work centers those navigating complex grief, end-of-life processes, pregnancy and postpartum experiences, and major identity shifts. If you've ever felt like grief doesn't "end," or that something in you was fundamentally changed by loss—this conversation will meet you there. — Connect with KP Parks: Website: https://www.mithtracounseling.com/ Offerings include grief tending groups (virtual and in-person), trauma-informed therapy, and support for life transitions. — About Loving Everything: Loving Everything is a podcast exploring relational healing, trauma, identity, and meaning-making through long-form, in-person conversations with clinicians, educators, and healers. — Subscribe for more conversations on mental health, grief, and relational healing. __   Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love   Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love   ___   All production by Cody Maxwell.   sharkfyn.com   Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy.   Opening graphic assets by arakelov and Envato Elements.

EP67: Wanting Love Is Not the Problem - Attachment Needs and Singlehood

Is wanting love actually the problem… or is it the thing we've been taught to question? In this episode of Loving Everything, I sit down with licensed marriage and family therapist Nora Harrington to explore the experience of longing, attachment, and what it means to be single in a culture that often pathologizes the desire for connection. We talk about the tension so many people feel between being told to "heal," "detach," or "want less" — and the very real, human need for closeness, intimacy, and relationship. This conversation challenges the idea that longing is something to fix, and instead explores what it might be communicating. We explore: The difference between anxious attachment and a healthy desire for connection How long-term unwanted singlehood impacts the nervous system and self-worth Why our culture is uncomfortable with longing and emotional need What happens when people believe their desire for love is the problem How attachment wounds show up in dating, sexuality, and intimacy The impact of cultural scripts on sex, desire, and pleasure What it means to "undo aloneness" in both individual therapy and group work How to reconnect with your body after rejection, shame, or relational pain Nora's work centers on helping people move toward deep, meaningful relationships and a more authentic connection to their own desire, pleasure, and capacity for connection. If you've ever felt like you are "too much," "too needy," or somehow doing relationships wrong — this conversation offers a different lens. This isn't about wanting less. It's about understanding what your longing is asking for. https://awaketogethercounseling.com/ 🔔 Subscribe for more conversations on relationships, trauma, and emotional healing Recorded in Portland, Oregon __ Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP66: We Don't Talk About It - The Trauma Veterans Carry After War

What happens when the danger ends but your nervous system never gets the message? In this deeply honest episode of Loving Everything, I sit down with Oregon native and U.S. Air Force veteran Grant Hohman to talk about something we rarely acknowledge in public conversations about trauma, mental health, and survival. We don't talk about it. We don't talk about what it feels like when hypervigilance lives in the body long after service ends. We don't talk about the quiet moments that can feel harder than combat. We don't talk about chronic pain, depression, emotional numbness, or the internal voice that tells us we should be "strong enough" to handle it alone. In this conversation we explore: • PTSD and the nervous system after trauma • Why soldiers scan rooms and read faces long after deployment • The connection between trauma, chronic pain, and exhaustion • The unspoken culture of "I'm fine" in military life • Self criticism, shame, and emotional survival strategies • What finally makes someone reach out for help • How healing begins when silence breaks This episode is especially meaningful for anyone navigating trauma recovery, relational trauma, attachment wounds, betrayal trauma, depression, or post traumatic stress. If you've ever believed you should be "over it by now," this conversation is for you. You are not broken. Your nervous system learned how to survive. __ Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP65: Violence, Trauma & Healing - How Childhood Safety, Attachment & Community Prevent Harm

What if the real question isn't why violence happens... but what was missing long before it did I sit down with Dr. Jeff Todahl, Director of CSAW & Associate Professor at the University of Oregon, to talk about violence prevention, childhood safety, and what it actually takes to reduce harm in real communities. Jeff shares decades of experience at the intersection of child welfare, childhood sexual abuse prevention, intimate partner violence, community response, and survivor-centered healing. Instead of reducing harm to "bad parents" or individual blame, he makes a clear case for prevention as a public health issue rooted in connection, belonging, and support. In this episode, we explore • What childhood safety and wellbeing really mean in lived experience • Why violence grows in isolation and secrecy • The myth of "bad parents" and why shame keeps families silent • Why reacting to harm will never stop it and what prevention looks like upstream • What helps survivors heal when harm has been denied or minimized • Why adult children of emotionally immature or unsafe homes cannot simply move on • What to do if you feel overwhelmed by the scale of violence and fear • How to move one percent closer to safety and self-compassion when you feel broken • What youth say they need from adults to make disclosure safer • Why healing and prevention are inseparable Jeff also speaks candidly about purpose, persistence, community based solutions, and what it takes to stay in the work without shutting down or disconnecting from your body. This episode is for • Survivors who need language for what they lived through • Parents who want support, not shame • Clinicians, educators, advocates, and community members holding heavy stories If you grew up in chaos, high conflict, or fear, this conversation is a reminder that healing does not begin with forgetting. EP64: Healing the Inner War - Is Self-Abuse Making Us Sick?

What if your body is not betraying you, but protecting you in the only way it knows how? In Episode 64 of Loving Everything, Andrea Love sits down with Cece Hughley Noel for a raw, illuminating conversation about chronic illness, trauma, and the inner war so many women live with for decades. This episode explores the hidden relationship between emotional neglect, attachment wounds, self-abandonment, and physical illness, especially in women who have spent their lives over-functioning, caregiving, and self-silencing. Cece shares her lived experience navigating colitis, IBS, insomnia, autoimmune symptoms, medical gaslighting, and chronic dismissal, and how her background as a journalist and communication expert ultimately became the key to healing. Together, we unpack how self-criticism, over-responsibility, and the belief "I don't deserve to get well" become survival strategies, and how the body often becomes the last voice left to speak. This conversation is for midlife women healing relational trauma, betrayal trauma, emotionally immature family systems, and nervous system dysregulation, who are ready to stop fighting their bodies and start listening. Healing is not about fixing yourself - it's about ending the inner war and reclaiming self-loyalty. ___ Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP63: Why Men Heal - Beauty, Vulnerability, and the Making of a Man

An intimate conversation with writer Benjamin Baker on beauty, masculinity, desire, childhood, and the emotional labor of becoming a man who can finally be seen. This conversation explores the intersection of masculinity, beauty, and healing through the lens of emotional vulnerability. Andrea Love sits down with Benjamin Baker, a Portland-based writer, aesthetic philosopher, and emotional advocate, whose reflections on Threads have opened an honest dialogue about what it means for men to "do the work." Together they unpack how beauty can be a form of truth-telling, how vulnerability transforms relationships, and what happens when men reclaim the parts of themselves that have been shamed, silenced, or aestheticized. This episode weaves together art, intimacy, somatics, and the inner architecture of becoming, inviting both men and women to see beauty not as a performance, but as presence. @gentlemynmyles ___ Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP62: Life After Diagnosis - Navigating Hospitalization, Therapy & Hope

What happens after the diagnosis After the hospitalization After the labels, the silence, and the fear In this deeply moving episode of Loving Everything, Andrea Love sits down with Renee Anderson, writer, conservationist, and creator of Wild Oregon Girl, for an honest conversation about life after schizoaffective disorder, dual diagnosis rehab, and the slow, courageous work of rebuilding a relationship with yourself. Renee shares what it was like to disappear from public life after a mental health crisis and what it took to return - not cured, not polished, but honest. Together, we explore mental health recovery, trauma, identity, and meaning after diagnosis, including how writing became a lifeline, how to re-emerge online without self-exploitation, and how healing can coexist with responsibility, creativity, and stewardship. We discuss grief and hope, recovery and meaning, spirituality and psychology, and how reconnecting to land, community, and imagination can be part of healing. EP61: When Law Contradicts Faith - Ethics, Religion, and Freedom

Aleksey Podlinov returns to explore the tension between religious obedience, personal truth, and the lived experience of spiritual transformation. Alex first shared the origins of his journey in Episode 40, The Gift of Self-Reliance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGmz-l0uSbQ&t=3s ), where he described how the sudden death of his father at 15 shattered his worldview and set him on a decades-long search for meaning through ancient Russian Christian writings, Greek and Egyptian spirituality, Hindu texts, and the lived realities of being a husband, father, and immigrant rebuilding identity in America.  We explore how fear disguises itself as righteousness, how obedience shifts from rule-following to relationship, and how spiritual pride dissolves when life brings you to your knees. Alex reflects on sleep paralysis, mystical experiences, masculinity, migration grief, fatherhood, marriage, raising sons, and the uncomfortable truths revealed during his wife's surgery and recovery. He speaks openly about leaving religious radio after realizing critique without love becomes cruelty, and how he now challenges his tradition without contempt. This conversation is for women in midlife who are deconstructing inherited beliefs, healing family pain, confronting their own moral values, and searching for spiritual freedom beyond fear, dogma, or perfectionism. ✨ Subscribe for more content on trauma recovery, psychology, and personal growth. ___ Find out more about Andrea Love and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP60: Overcoming Rejection: Hurt People Hurt People

In this episode, I vulnerably share the deeper truth behind why rejection from the people we love cuts so painfully — and how unhealed trauma, attachment wounds, and generational patterns shape who we choose, how we love, and why we stay in relationships that minimize our worth. This episode is for women in midlife who have spent decades holding families together, surviving unequal relationships, betrayal, emotional immaturity, and high-conflict dynamics. If you've experienced feelings of abandonment, perfectionism, self-blame, or the belief that you're "too much" or "not enough," this conversation will help you finally understand the energetic and psychological roots of rejection. We explore the spiritual and somatic layers of heartbreak, why avoidant and wounded partners push away intimacy, and how your nervous system has been conditioned to confuse chaos with love. In Exploring the Self: Unlocking Self-Discovery & Personal Growth, we sit down with IFS Coach, mental health advocate, and soulful explorer Avery Wood for a deep and intimate conversation about healing from the inside out. Avery guides us through the transformative framework of Internal Family Systems (IFS)—a therapeutic approach that views the mind as a constellation of "parts," each carrying its own emotions, roles, and history. Some parts protect us, some carry pain, and others step in to manage overwhelm. At the center of it all is the Self—our innate source of calm, clarity, compassion, and curiosity. In this episode, we explore the process of unburdening these parts, accessing the Self, and creating inner harmony. We discuss how protectors, exiles, and firefighters show up in daily life and how deep healing begins with listening, not fixing. EP39: Jerome Gilgan - Giving Up On Yourself

Jerome Gilgan grew up in a turbulent household marked by an abusive, alcoholic mother, two sisters, and the absence of a father figure. The emotional void and feelings of isolation from his upbringing drove Jerome to express his pain through violence—punching walls, getting into fights, and struggling academically. His school, eager to rid itself of a troublesome student, graduated him from 8th grade despite his failing grades. High school proved no different, and he was expelled after just eight months. Jerome's struggles escalated when tragedy struck. His cousin and closest friend, Michael, died in his arms—a devastating event that led Jerome to alcohol in a desperate attempt to numb the pain. By 14, he was using and selling marijuana, and his first arrest followed soon after. A second arrest at 15 led to an ultimatum: his mother kicked him out of the house. Homeless and hungry, Jerome resorted to breaking into homes to survive. At 18, Jerome left New Jersey for Portland, hoping to evade the police and start fresh. Instead, he fell deeper into addiction, turning to methamphetamine. For 21 years, Jerome's life spiraled into chaos as he became entrenched in meth use, serving seven years in prison and three in jail for drug-related offenses. Despite going through four drug treatment programs, nothing seemed to help. Everything changed when Jerome was referred to the Men's Residential Center (MRC). Unlike previous programs, the MRC took a holistic approach, challenging Jerome to reevaluate his life and his self-worth. "This program was different," Jerome reflects. "It wasn't just about taking classes. It was about learning how to see life and myself through a new lens. I learned how to communicate and even went into schools to share my story and warn students about the dangers of drugs. For the first time, I felt like my life had a purpose and could positively impact others." In 2003, Jerome graduated from the MRC and has remained clean ever since. Motivated to give back, he accepted a job offer two years later as a residential counselor at the MRC. Jerome's determination didn't stop there—he graduated from Portland Community College in 2007 with honors and became a certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Today, he serves as the residential treatment supervisor at the MRC while pursuing a master's degree in social work at Portland State University, becoming the first person in recovery to hold a leadership role at the MRC. "I owe my life to Greg Stone, the program director, and the MRC," Jerome says with conviction. "My loyalty to the program is unwavering. All I want is to be part of it, to help save someone else, and to give others the same hope I was given." ___ Find out more about Andrea Love, and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. EP28: Shea Leona - Love Is Growing & Building Something Together

Shea Leona started her first business ten years ago after finishing her Holistic Health Certification in health, nutrition, and lifestyle at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. However, her journey into wellness began long before that. When Shea was 17, she was over 220lbs and prediabetic. Over the next few years, she shed over 100 pounds physically and decided to pursue nutrition to bring the change she had experienced to others. Shea has always been interested in the occult and metaphysics. She has worked closely with a mentor in the healing arts, and she had no idea at the time of all the places the relationship would take her. Shea studied Reiki and eventually became a Reiki Master specializing in an Atlantean 13 Chakra energy system. This path led her to acquire healing tools, including facilitating past life regressions, soul progressions, energy healing, crystal healing, and sound healing. Shea's health coaching practice morphed into a general wellness practice where she worked with women on the physical, mental, and emotional levels to bring more balance and overall wellness into their lives. Shea has offered many workshops and events over the years, both in person and online, ranging from weight loss to the benefits of fermented foods to priestessing large group gatherings, meditations, and moon ceremonies honoring the cycles of nature and the cycles within us. In late 2017, Shea suffered a head injury, which caused her to evaluate her priorities. So, in early 2018, she decided to close her healing practice and focus on healing herself while simultaneously fully recovering from her hormonal imbalances along the way. Up until this point in her life, Shea believed she would never be able to have children. That all changed in 2019 when she was surprised to find herself pregnant by my partner of almost ten years. She spent the next few years growing and nourishing two children, and it has been the highlight of her life. Shea began pursuing bookkeeping as a mother because she knew it was a skill she needed in her own life. The back-end stuff, the not-fun business stuff of tracking, keeping records, what's a write-off, what's not, filing taxes, all of those aspects of owning a business were such a struggle for her. It was the most significant stress factor in all her previous business ventures. So naturally, she set out to conquer it. https://www.mysticalbookkeeping.com/ Find out more about Andrea and her services here: https://www.andreafirpo.com/ All video production and editing by Cody Maxwell. https://sharkfyn.com/maxwells-kitchen... EP27: Sharon & Dave Thormahlen - Love Is Respecting Other People's Choices

Dave Thormahlen first became interested in instrument making as a mandolin playing teenager in Palo Alto, CA. Dave regularly attended jam sessions at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto. One night the owner, Frank Ford, let him play a mandolin he had just finished building. The light bulb went on and Dave thought, "Wow, people actually make these things. I would like to do that." With great encouragement from his parents, he went to college, eventually earning a master's degree in geology. It was while Dave was a graduate student at Oregon State University that he happened upon the Memorial Union Craft Center. There, Dave found his second home, and with his childhood background of building boats with his dad and junior high woodshop, he was able to pursue his dream of learning the craft of making musical instruments. The creative freedom to work out his own harp design led him to focus on harp making. Over the last 20 years, Dave has refined his skills and designs while making over 1400 instruments, specializing in his 36 string Swan, Cygnet and Serenade harps along with the 34 string Clare and Ceili. Sharon Thormahlen's musical career began at the age of 12 when she saw her cousin's husband playing the guitar. Sharon said to her mom, "I want to learn how to do that." So her mother got her a guitar and Sharon took lessons. Sharon was most interested in folk music and soon learned to figure out chords to the songs that she wanted to sing. In 1981, Sharon played in a duo called Sweet Harmony. Later in 1987, She played bass in a band called The Swing Beans with Dave on mandolin, another Dave on violin, and "Lentil Bean" on guitar. They all sang, traveling all over the Northwest as part of the Oregon Arts Commission, and they had a blast. In 1992, Dave and Sharon's daughter Rosiee was born. Dave and Sharon weren't ready to end their Swing Bean career yet, so they took a nanny with them, and for 2 years continued to play gigs all over Oregon, California, and Washington. Dave and Sharon put out 2 albums: Groovin' in the Garden, available only on tape, and Dessert First, available on tape and CD. Sharon wrote about half of the songs on both recordings. Also in 1992, Dave and Sharon began attending the International Society of Folkharpers and Craftsman (ISFHC) harp conferences. By 1996, in Tacoma, Sharon was inspired to learn to play. Rosiee had just started going to school full time and it opened up the time for her to start taking lessons with Laura Zaerr. In September of 2002, Sharon completed the Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP). Sharon began working in hospitals, nursing homes, and for hospice and it has opened up a whole new world for her. Sharon has published 19 music books, some of which are of her original compositions written on the harp and some are of arrangements of traditional tunes. https://www.thorharp.com/index.htm Find out more about Andrea and her services here: https://www.andreafirpo.com/ All video production and editing by Cody Maxwell. https://sharkfyn.com/maxwells-kitchen...
