MFP 122: We Need a Break
Whew...2019 has been a whirlwind of awesome opportunities and new beginnings for John and I. The biggest of course was John getting married, but also this year my wife Susan came on full time with FTBT. John brought on his full time editor, Sam, and we’ve both take on loads of new work and opportunities that have had us travelling and getting involved in new business planning ideas. On top of that John is going through a full house remodel and looking at buying another property. Yeah, lots of stuff. So basically what I’m getting at here is we need a break. We’ve got 6 or 7 weeks left in the year and we need to finish strong. But don’t worry, we’ll be back in 2020. Things may look a little different then, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. MFP 120: Evolution of a Side Hustle with Andrew Bacon of Field Treasure Designs
Today John is still out and I’m talking with one of my oldest friends in the online woodworking community. Andrew Bacon started Field Treasure Designs back in 2012 making rustic pallet clocks and hand stenciled signs. He grew his side hustle and tested and produced dozens of new products along the way. He’s sold products into all 50 states as well as overseas. Through several life changes and moves Andrew’s business changed with him until he finally decided to pivot to a new venture. He shares about that evolution today and gives some awesome tips and nuggets of wisdom for the aspiring side hustler. John just got married this week. So I (Brad) gave him a break to take care of all the fun last minute wedding planning. But I thought this would be a great chance to talk about an awesome opportunity I recently had. I spent a full day with Gary Vee and his team, okay he was really only in the room for about 75 minutes, but it was a really insightful session and I wanted to share some things I took away from it. Aaron Massey has been running his own Mr. Fix It DIY channel for over 6 years, but also has been a producer for an almost 9M subscriber channel for 10 years that has over 1,300 videos and 6 Billion views. MFP 114: Building Systems with Mike Farrington
Today we’re talking with a guy who’s been working the trades his whole life. Mike Farrington cut his teeth in construction working his way through school. And after a quick stint working a desk job he went back to his love for building. He’s built a successful custom woodworking business over the last 15 years and in the past 2 years has branched out to YouTube. Mike talks with us today about how setting up systems has helped his workflow, how he deals with tire kicking customers, and his approach for getting deals on tools. Mike has easily become one of my personal favorite youtubers as he’s a master of his craft and of his own brand. With his channel recently surpassing 100k subscribers he’s well worth checking out. He continues to grow his channel and show off some super impressive skills. I am personally always impressed with anyone who can balance making content along with handling a custom work load. This was quite an enjoyable conversation! MFP 113: When To Pivot Your Business
Things were going great. It was 2013, pallet wood and rustic furniture was so hot. You were killing it and backlogged for months. Now it’s 2019 and unless you’re Paul Jackman the pallet wood trend is dead in the water. And if you’re business was heavily focused on that trend then you’re either scrounging for work or have pivoted to the next trend or a new focus area. This is an example of a need to pivot your business from a negative impact, but you can also pivot to take advantage of a positive opportunity. Today we’ll talk about how we’ve made our own pivots in content and other areas and the thought process we took while doing it. MFP 112: Finding Balance with Jason Radcliffe of 44 Steel
We’re jumping back into the metalworking side of making with today’s guest. Jason Radcliffe is a custom metalworker who’s been building his business for almost 20 years. He has a unique setup where he’s actually still working a day job but one that compliments his metalworking. Jason talks to us about how he balances both his jobs while still finding time to take a breath and enjoy time with his wife and his personal interests. Jason started his business, 44 Steel, in 2005, and as Brad said had been growing it on the side. He was featured on the TV Show Framework, with our guest and friend. Jory Brigham. And actually has a class he teaches with jory a few times a year, which I will personally be at the end of october helping out. Jasons been hustling for a long time, and though he may not be a monster on the social media scene, hes for sure a monster behind the scenes. With contracts for product lines from large manufacturing companies, to having his products featured in prominent NYC showrooms , Jason is a beast no doubt! It was an awesome learning how a side hustler is truly maximizing his business, and changing it up a bit with metal and not woodwork on this episode! MFP 110: Finding Your Audience with Evan & Katelyn
We’ve got a fun interview today with our favorite maker husband and wife duo, Evan and Katelyn. They’ve been running heavy as full time content creators just over a year now. They ran a small goods business selling wholesale into West Elm before going all-in on content. It’s a great conversation on the transition from full time jobs, to side hustle, to full time content creators. They also go into how they found their new audience and have pivoted their channel and are seeing massive gains. Evan and Kately are killing it. Just straight up killing it. Scooping up over 200k new subscribers this year alone, they have recently passed 390k and may even be over 400k as we speak! With 26 million channel views on youtube, these two are what we call “in the pocket”. And not to mention, have been listeners and were early patreon supporters on MFP. We have a ton of fun on this one, and I almost filled up a whole notebook with information from our chat! MFP 107: Work Life Balance
To grow a successful business it takes dedication, hard work, consistency, a good business plan, new customers, and about 50 other things. And when you do it right it’s a wonderful thing and your business can take off. But one day you might look up and have an amazing business and realize you’ve gained 20 lbs, haven’t talked to your friends in 2 months and can’t remember the last time you did something fun for yourself. MFP 106: Putting in the Time with Paul Jackman from Jackman Works
We’ve got an oversized episode for you today, or should I say, Jackman sized. Paul Jackman has built a strong YouTube and online following in the maker space in an unconventional way. He was educated in the skilled trades, but found his passion in a more artistic approach to building. And the results are Paul building things like a 16 times scale folding knife and a life size nutcraker both made out of pallet wood he breaks down and processes. Today Paul talks about the journey to where he is now and how putting in the time in different aspects of his business has helped set him apart. Paul is not only one of the most sought after “male models” on the internet, but he’s an impressive influencer in the maker community as well. With 260k+ Subscribers on youtube and a growing instagram following of 60k+ and is also an avid user of the ever mystifying Reddit. Paul brings a lot of personality and interesting approaches to typical menial tasks. This show is one of my favorites. She started off in the farmer’s market and craft fair scene selling products. As a way to stand out at the farmer’s market she started demoing turning at her booth. From there she found her love for teaching, a couple great mentors, and has become a world renowned woodturning teacher herself. She talks to us about this and her incredible journey to being one of the premiere teachers in the field today. Ashley is fairly new to Instagram jumping on board a little over a year ago and is sooooo very close to 100k followers. MFP 092: Unnecessary Embellishment with Jenny Bower from Bower Engraving
We’re continuing to branch out with the makers on our show and today we talk with another artist but in a different medium. Jenny Bower runs a custom engraving business where she specializes in her own style of embellishment on anything made of metal. From old tape measures to custom hand planes, she’s been making unique pieces of art for her customers. She got her start somewhat by happenstance trying to support her husband’s clock making. But she’s grown Bower Engraving into a full fledged business with a huge demand and shares with us how she got there. Jen has been a huge inspiration to the Instagram community since she came on the scene. With over 70k followers Jen showcases her incredible talent on a daily basis and she shows off her unbelievable fearlessness of tackling any project she puts her mind to. Whether it’s dabbling in woodworking or showing off her drawing skills, Brad and I absolutely love her content, and her positive attitude, and we had a blast having her on the show. MFP 091: Contracts, Do You Actually Need Them?
As you start becoming a legit business you start dealing with more and more clients and transactions. And every transaction is a chance to delight your customers and give them everything they wanted...or a chance for miscommunication, false expectations, undelivered promises, and two parties left playing he said/ she said. We’d all like the first scenario rather than the second and having a contract for each transaction will help get you there. Today we’ll talk about the important things to consider when locking down a contract with your clients….and in no way is this legal advice. MFP 085: Social Media Burnout
To drive your Instagram you’ve gotta post daily...and two times a day is even better. Make sure you’re engaging with all your comments. Answer your DM’s, don’t forget to do Stories, and man IGTV is really taking off so you better be doing that too….I mean seriously, who has the time for this stuff? I’m a full time content creator and I can barely keep up and when I was working a day job it became suffocating at times. Today we’re going to talk about the grind of social media. John and I have both gone through the struggles of burnout and being overwhelmed and we’ll talk about some things we’ve done to help avoid it and what we still struggle with. MFP 084: Following the Audience with Kevin O’Connor
Today we have an interview with someone who a lot of us have hung out with on Saturdays for the over a decade. Kevin O’Connor has been the host of This Old House and Ask This Old House since 2003 and has helped guide many aspiring DIYers and woodworkers, including myself, through home repairs, construction, and remodeling projects with the help of Norm, Tommy, Richard, and Roger, the trades experts on the show. We talk with Kevin about the trades gap, staying relevant with your audience and how he and the show are using social media and YouTube to continue to get better. Graduating from Boston University with a MBA in 1999, Kevin’s career path was much different before he became the host of this old house. Kevin also tells us how he went from being a Senior VP at the Bank of America to being the host of the 18 time emmy award winning show. Kevin is also a published author, amateur photographer, and father of 3. Ha’s a busy man with tons of passion to share about social media and the trades, and we had an absolute blast having him on the show Show notes: https://madeforprofit.com/episode84 Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/madeforprofittribe/ Support us: http://www.patreon.com/madeforprofit Guide to Pricing Handmade Goods: https://madeforprofit.com/pricingguide
