Medicine Motherhood Missions

Hi! I'm Johanna, Welcome to Medicine, Motherhood, & Mission – a podcast born from a love of inspiring and encouraging conversations. As a PA, mom, & nonprofit founder, I’ve always been passionate about hearing the stories and journeys of others – their challenges, triumphs, and the purpose that drives them. Too often, we find ourselves stuck in our own bubbles and perspectives, but here, we make space to listen, learn, and grow together. My hope is that these stories of remarkable women ignite a spark in you, remind you of your purpose, and encourage you to take bold steps towards your dreams.

43 | The Power of Quiet: How Introversion Fuels Creativity and Success A conversation with author & teacher, Christine Devane

In this episode of "Medicine, Motherhood, and Missions," we dive into the world of introversion and creativity with Christine Devane, author of "Elephant Beach." Christine shares her journey from a shy child with a love for elephants and storytelling to becoming a teacher and children's book author. Discover how her introverted nature shaped her creativity, influenced her teaching style, and inspired her to write stories that encourage children to step out of their comfort zones. Join us as we explore the unique strengths of introverts and the power of patience and understanding in nurturing creativity. Tune in for an inspiring conversation about embracing differences and fostering imagination in both children and adults.Christine grew up in North Andover, MA with her parents Tony and Joyce and brothers Anthony and Eddie. She was very shy when she was young and spent a lot of time reading. Throughout her childhood Christine loved animals, especially elephants. People started to buy them for her as a collection. Her grandparents, Eddie and Ginger, as well as her parents would bring her back lucky elephants from their trips. Throughout her childhood Christine always enjoyed trips to the beach with her family and grandparents.  In 2006 Christine graduated from Merrimack College with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in Elementary Education. In 2008 she received her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Merrimack College. Christine would then go on to teach elementary school for the next 13 years. Her favorite part of the day was reading to her students. It was during reading time that she connected with her students through books. They learned, laughed and felt a range of emotions together. Christine decided that she wanted to write her own book for students to engage with, while learning and laughing. Since elephants have always been her favorite animal, she found it fitting to include them in her story. In 2017 Christine traveled to Africa with her mother and husband where she was able to see elephants living in the wild, which was always a lifelong dream. Many of the elephants were playing in the water and seemed to be having fun as they appear to in her book. Christine and her husband John have 3 children- Joey, Nick and Adeline and a dog named Sophie with whom she loves to read with. They laugh at her stories and enjoy trips to the beach together as a family. “Elephant Beach” is her first published work. Connect with Christine: https://www.christine-devane.com/ Instagram- stined13Connect with Johanna LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johannamoses/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/medicine_motherhood_missions/www.johannamoses.com

42 | Whose Body, Whose Choice? Fertility, Autonomy, and Ethics in Reproductive Medicine. A conversation with Bioethicist Mary Fusillo

In this episode of "Medicine Motherhood and Missions," we explore the profound impact of IVF and surrogacy on society with Mary Fusillo, a leader in reproductive medicine. From her personal journey through infertility to her pioneering work in egg donation and surrogacy programs, Mary shares insights into the ethical dilemmas and societal shifts surrounding these technologies. Join us as we delve into the complexities of bioethics, the evolution of reproductive health, and the ongoing quest for justice, love, and wisdom in family creation. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation that challenges norms and inspires change.Mary is someone who has worn many hats—journalist, trauma nurse, infertility expert, business founder, and bioethicist. Mary rose through the ranks of administration and leadership. Mary was instrumental in starting the Donor Egg program. She has been a leader in the field of reproductive medicine for 30+ years and started three companies of her own.Mary led national consulting efforts, and built multiple companies that help families navigate the complex path to parenthood. But what makes this conversation so compelling isn’t just Mary’s professional accomplishments—it’s her willingness to wrestle with the hard ethical questions as she also went on to start a PhD in Bioethics:How old is too old to have a baby? What does justice mean in fertility care? And what happens when we pay someone to give life?We also talk about working motherhood—what it looked like in the '80s, what’s changed, and what hasn’t.This is a rich, nuanced, and necessary conversation about autonomy, compassion, and the future of family building. What does it mean to build a family—with science, ethics, and heart? 💭Mary M. Fusillo has worn many hats: trauma nurse, infertility clinic director, business founder, and now bioethicist. In this episode, we talk about:🔹 Navigating motherhood and career in the 80s🔹 The explosion of egg donation and surrogacy🔹 What justice, autonomy, and dignity really mean in fertility care🔹 The hard ethical questions no one wants to ask—but Mary does.🔹 Autonomy is sacred in bioethics, but it becomes complicated when multiple people’s rights intersect—intended parents, donors, surrogates, and the child who will one day grow up with their own story.🔹 Justice asks not only “Is this legal?” but “Is this fair?”—and fairness requires looking at the broader systems of power, race, income, and gender that shape outcomes.🔹 In trying to do good (beneficence), we must not cause harm (nonmaleficence). But in fertility care, there’s always some risk—and always some sacrifice. Where is the line?🔹 As bioethics evolves, more people are advocating for the child’s right to identity—including their biological and birth history. Secrecy may offer short-term comfort, but it raises long-term questions about trust and justice.🔹 Ethics isn’t just about logic—it’s about deeply held values. When medicine, motherhood, and mission intersect, we’re called to hold space for complexity, humility, and grace.Bioethics is not about having perfect answers. It’s about being brave enough to ask the hard questions—and compassionate enough to sit in the tension. In a world where we can design families and extend life, bioethics asks: Are we doing it with love, justice, and wisdom?Whether you're in medicine, motherhood, or simply care about the future of family, this is a must-listen.Connect with Mary: www.familysolutionsinternational.com, @donorsolution, @the_eggsplanation_pod, www.thedonorsolution.comConnect with Johanna LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johannamoses/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/medicine_motherhood_missions/www.johannamoses.com Don’t settle for burnout or dissatisfaction—discover how to take charge of your life and career. 📥 Download for Free HERE —> https://www.johannamoses.com/product-page/the-fulfilled-provider-guide

In this episode, I sit down with Sarah Stonestreet—host of The Strong Women Podcast, homeschool mom, reader of the classics, and Community Outreach Director at Saint George’s Anglican Church in Colorado Springs. Sarah shares her journey to starting a podcast that highlights the strength and stories of women shaped by faith. We dive into big questions: -What does it mean to be a strong woman today? -How does the Bible actually portray strength in women? -And is there a tension within Christian circles when it comes to the term “strong woman”? ABOUT THIS SHOW
