    S1 E51 - Why acrimonious parental separation is bad for the kids and how to prevent it | James Hayhurst

    James is the founder of the Positive Parenting Alliance and creator of the Parents Promise.  Having seen up close the multitude of issues in the family courts and the numbers of children and parents affected James wanted to begin a new conversation about separation.In May 2021, after many conversations with like-minded people and organisations the Parents Promise was launched. Backed by over 20 organisations ranging from the likes of the children’s mental health charity Place2Be to Relate to Black Mums Upfront the aim of the Alliance is to effect important cultural change around separation in the UK and beyond.     Dr Andy Hamilton is a research associate with the Taking Boys Seriously (TBS) project at Ulster University. TBS is a longitudinal action research initiative spanning over 18 years. The research works alongside adolescent boys and the educational ecosystem that surrounds them to transform experiences and outcomes in education, particularly for those young men faced with compounded educational disadvantage.  Andy’s background is in informal education. His doctoral research investigated the multiple ways in which youth workers approach peacebuilding with young people in Northern Ireland and stemmed from over a decade of experience as a practitioner and trustee in the youth sector.  His current role with Taking Boys Seriously brings together multiple research interests including equity and equality in education, gender and masculinities, participatory action research, youth in contested societies, and applied social and political theory. His careers include research consultant, counsellor, deputy technical manager, scientific photographer and kitchen assistant. Robin’s training as a counsellor and his own experience of desperately wanting to be a dad led him to research the desire for fatherhood in childless men as part of his MA in Counselling (The University of Manchester). He then  self-funded MSc in Research Methods (UoMr) exploring the levels of desire for parenthood (‘broodiness’) in females and males, parents and non-parents. Robin then successfully completed his PhD at Keele University where he examined the impact of involuntary childlessness on the lives of older men. His research has been widely published in international and national media. He supports several infertility and involuntary childless support groups and is a founder member of the campaign group Ageing Without Children. He is a leading expert on the impact of male childlessness across the life course. Robin is from Old Trafford, Manchester (UK).
