Twin Picks: CEMETERY MAN x THE CHURCH
Everybody say buongiorno to Michele Soavi — Italian horror’s lost little brother, who worked under big names like Argento and Fulci before basically quitting the genre in the mid 90s.Before all that, tho, the director put out flamboyant, stylish scarers like THE CHURCH (1989) and loveable horror-comedy CEMETERY MAN (1994), both of which we’re diving into today. The movies are jam-packed with ideas, from spectacular effects only shown onscreen for seconds to provocatively odd or poignant narrative themes. Also bizarre, ribald digressions that a less daring filmmaker would omit. (Rupert Everett begging a doctor to remove his wang? Neat)Soavi is a name worth knowing, even if his filmography never got to blossom into its full potential. Get into it miei amici! RUSS MEYER - A Triple Feature of Double Ds
Most of us grow up n get boring n stop playing with dolls…but not Russ Meyer. A supreme leader in sexploitation, the director of 1965’s FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL KILL!, 1970’S BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, and 1975’S SUPERVIXENS gets a mini-marathon of sorts in this boobalicious episode. In the first episode of season three, Noah and Eliza watched the three mentioned cult films and dig into the ever-complex line between empowerment and exploitation, all in celebration of their short I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S NOT THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS! dropping online. Read It ‘n Weep: GREMLINS by George Gipe
a brand new format on the pod ?? dedicated to hasty film-to-book adaptations, ie artless exercises in turning the written word into studio merch?? why, what a NOVEL concept !!yea that’s right, we can and DO read books - and this nutty, troubling novelisation of the classic Christmas comedy-horror Gremlins is a great place to start.Noah and Eliza both read George Gipe’s tie-in novel and are horrified to realise the thus-far-untold depths of Mogwai suffering. Are all movie novelisations like this, and why are they like this, and can we find one that stands on its own merits as a work of literary fiction? Twin Picks: FROGS x SLUGS
It’s about that time…the time…for SLIME… Comparing two swampy creature features, Noah and Eliza wonder if there are some animals that simply are not scary enough to power a horror movie. Juan Piquer Simon’s 1988 movie SLUGS sics millions of black, writhing, gooey gastropods on a small town of hilariously hateful and rude characters, resulting in some gnarly SFX moments and sexual subtext. But 1972’s FROGS doesn’t have nearly enough critters!! It’s got Sam Elliott and an interesting bayou mansion setting, but not enough actual webbed-hands-around-throats action :(Which film is the scariest and the squishiest? Do these movies actually make us care more about the environment or just wanna stomp it to death? How did Noah overcome his childhood leech fear ? All good questions but u won’t get answers today, we’re talking about other frog and slug stuff you couldn’t possibly comprehend. Midnight Marathon: CURE x CLOUD// Kiyoshi Kurosawa Part 1 feat. Tyler Bain !!
We are HYPNOTISED, HAUNTED and HACK’D by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whose unsettling Japanese thrillers are finally getting the Midnight Marathon treatment. Best of all - filmmaker, Kurosawa megafan and good buddy TYLER BAIN (@tyler.internet) is riding shotgun with us in the cloud-shrouded nightmare bus to hell! weeeeeeWe start with Kurosawa’s 1997 breakout CURE, a disorienting detective story with a stunning final shot and enough atmospheric scares to inspire the then-budding J-Horror movement. Nice day for a white Weddington - i now pronounce u to be two fucked up, distressing, long and entertaining movies !! Noah has been destructively hyped for Zach Creggers’ sophomore feature WEAPONS since the first teaser dropped: a ‘horror epic’ depicting the aftermath of a bizarre disappearance from multiple townsfolk perspectives. but sometimes delayed gratification and mysterious marketing can work against a movie??Ari Aster’s fourth movie EDDINGTON is also about a small town gone violent n insane, but it seems Eliza and Noah find more to grapple with in its difficult comedy and social perspective. Twin Picks: BE MY CAT: A FILM FOR ANNE x I BLAME SOCIETY
We are so beyond breaking the fourth wall: in this pair of found footage horrors, the killers direct, write and star. Dw, neither Romanian indie BE MY CAT: A FILM FOR ANNE or scathing LA satire I BLAME SOCIETY are actual snuff films. They merely take us about as close as possible to one sick n twisted character’s vision of serial murder, whether sparked by Hollywood rejection or a deep fanboy love for Anne Hathaway.Noah and Eliza find both films to be funny, clever and creatively inspiring - in fact, this Twin Picks might be the only possible comfort, as the Midnight Screening website remains plagued by its own string of upsetting found footage videos under the label BADBADBAD.EXE. More like bring me back my freaking money what a depressing slog !! DANGEROUS ANIMALS is a far simpler, more entertaining beast, reminding us of why we love Aussie director Sean Byrne so much and triggering Noah’s lifelong fear of sharks. Midnight Marathon: ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND x WHEELS ON MEALS // Sammo Hung Part 2
Sammo enters the 1980s with a BANG - in our continuing celebration of a martial arts movie legend, we’re getting our first glimpses of Sammo Hung’s friendly rivalry with Jackie Chan, and his genre-making, hopping horror creativity. In the first ever “jiangshi” action movie Encounters of the Spooky Kind, shit gets scooby dooby and an insane final shot made us lose our minds. Then, Wheels on Meals is kind of an unofficial Mario bros buddy comedy (Yuen Biao and fight choreographer Chan!), with Sammo sporting a Jheri curl and directing the hell out of some truly painful-looking battles in Barcelona. It turns out our predictions for Hung’s hilarious blend of kung fu and gags were true: the guy just gets better and better. INLAND EMPIRE x ARTWORKS // Dreaming With David Lynch Part 3
From the transcendent Winkies diner jumpscare in Mulholland Dr. to nightmares of Bob in Twin Peaks, our guy David Lynch was a true master of horror when he wanted to be. That’s what we’re obsessed with in this third and final leg of our Lynch marathon: honing in on terror, in the director’s final, bewildering feature Inland Empire, and some of his eeriest artworks.Using (literally, gorily) raw materials and violent scenarios, Lynch’s mixed-media paintings show that his visual art can often be more strikingly obvious than his wonderful films - and, featuring Laura Dern in a career-best, multifaceted role, Inland Empire is certainly proof of that, too. It’s our last lunch with Lynch for now, but not forever - see ya in our dreams and nightmares!!SHOW NOTES:Paintings referenced:Boy Lights Fire Rat Meat Bird Change the Fuckin’ Channel Fuckface I Burn Pinecone and Throw In Your House SPECIAL EVENTEliza and friend of the pod Ivana (@avabanisher) are hostin a Twin Peaks season 1 marathon on April 5, celebrating the 35th anniversary of David Lynch’s seminal (and yes, SPOOKIE) show!! Midnight Marathon: THE DAY OF THE BEAST x THE CHILDREN // Season’s Screamingz Part 2
Christmas is all about the kids: holy infants, so tender n mild….but in the second part of our deep dive into yuletide terror, little people cause big, freaky problems. Nasty British horror The Children follows some snotty, evil kids picking off their almost-as-awful parents, and features some gnarly kills Noah and Eliza have never rlly seen before! Then, Spanish dark comedy The Day of the Beast offers up a perverted Nativity story, with a priest, a TV psychic and a satanist metalhead playing wise men who must stop the birth of the Antichrist on Christmas Day.Both movies are solid, scary, and a great way to wash all that sentimental family reunion crap from the holidays outta ur brain. And don’t forget that one, final accursed gift under the tree: the third episode in our Seasons Screamings Marathon, plummeting down the chimney long after all the other presents have been torn open!! Midnight Marathon: CHRISTMAS EVIL x SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT PART 2 // Season’s Screamingz Part 1
It’s the season for ho-ho-horror, and how are we meant to feel the festive spirit without watching some horrible nasty Christmas movies? Noah, Eliza and Anthony kick off a Christmas horror edition of Midnight Marathon with Christmas Evil (1980) and Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 (1987) - two movies about an unhinged Santa taking their yuletide trauma out on those they deem ‘naughty’. Thing is, the first movie is a bonafide cult classic, loved by John Waters and featuring a tremendous lead performance from Fiona Apple’s dad (??!!). The second movie is an insane feat of feature-film recycling, and one of the worst lead performances we’ve ever seen. GARBAGE DAY indeed. The pairing goes down like a litre of rotten egg nog, and our mistletoe marathon is only just beginning. the boyband song that's about wet dreams
Do boybands dream of liquid babes? Forget wanting it that way and not knowing you’re beautiful: in our most treasured boyband fantasy, a Frankenstein’d monster gal comes to slippery, stinky life, and we’re done being silent about her. Eliza and Noah take Anthony on a troubling journey to O-Town, and the minor boyband’s most confounding hit, 2000’s ‘Liquid Dreams’. Its legend foretells of a dream girl with the body parts of various celebrities, so hot she makes the band shoot ropes in the middle of the night. Eugh.We break down the lyrical description of the perfect woman, question how this was a real, charting pop song pitched at impressionable young girls, and appreciate somea those sweet sweet vocal riffs. Midnight Marathon: HUSH... HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE x STRAIT JACKET // Hagsploitation! Part 2
Whatever happened to Bette + Joan? In the second instalment of our deep dive into the HAGSPLOITATION horror subgenre, the Hollywood legends part ways to put their own spins on traumatised, middle-aged characters still stuck in their younger days. Bette gets Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, a sentimental (and mental) Southern Gothic with a dream sequence that left us STUNNED: while Joan does Strait-Jacket, a far trashier B-movie that sees the highly-strung star lose her shit but not her dignity. Now in the middle of their genre investigation, Eliza and Noah stumble onto some big questions: like is Sweet Charlotte actually better than the OG Baby Jane? Does Joan kinda wanna fuck her son-in-law? And can we really reclaim the word ‘hag’ all these years later, or is the genre just a place where talented older women go to die?SHOW NOTES: My Way of Life by Joan Crawford // This n' That by Bette DavisBecome ONE_OF_US over on our PATREON! Twin Picks: THE WICKER MAN x THE EMPTY MAN
Sacrifices must be made :) In their latest attempt to recruit u to the cult of creepy cinema, Eliza and Noah check out two movies about scary sects and frightening folklore: 1973's mould-breaking, delightful The Wicker Man, and underseen 2020 thriller The Empty Man.One film is hugely acclaimed (being one of Eliza's absolute fave films of all time!) while the other got dumped into an unwelcoming COVID-era release window. Both are fascinating, freaky yarns about the pleasures and terrors of conformity, with some uniquely unforgettable scenes (and songs!! O the songs!!). Twin Picks: BRAT x BRATZ
Who the fk are you/I'm a brat/when I'm bumpin Bratz (2007). Capitalising on Charli XCX's brat summer while they can, Eliza and Noah pull off the rare movie + ALBUM edition of Twin Picks, pairing this year's biggest pop tracks with one of the most maligned teen movies of all time.First up there's a lot of gushing over the era-defining beats, themes, and brattitude of Charli's lime-green sensation of an LP. Songs like 'Sympathy is a knife' and 'girl, so confusing' then get matched to the hilariously lame film adaptation of the Bratz doll line, in which villain Meredith Baxter-Dingley is the only character truly worthy of claiming the brat crown. should we do a little key should we have a little wine should we play with our little sexualised dolls on the living room carpet??Triplet In The Attic: Bratz Big Babyz Jade doll / 'Forrest Gump' by Frank OceanPATREONINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKLETTERBOXDmidnightscreeningproductions@gmail.comSound: Anthony CarrArt: Kazuki KomatsuNEXT WEEK = The Slop Bucket: THE EVIL WITHIN

CINEMANIACS in NYC !! feat. Darcey Eagle
Look out New York - we're walkin' here ;-)In this special episode, recorded LIVE from the streets of New York City, Noah and big-brain friend of the show Darcey Eagle spend a not-so-lazy Saturday racing around the Big Apple to relish in celluloid bliss at some of the cities most beautiful and historic cinemas. They start at the Paris Theatre in Lower Manhattan with Make Way For Tomorrow (1937), a bleak American drama about the burden an aging couple poses to their adult children, before making their way over to the Anthology Film Archives, an iconic establishment for the preservation of film, for a screening of La Vie de Bohème (1992), a black tragicomedy about struggling and selfish artists, and finally kickin' up their boots at the Metrograph for a packed screening of Jonathan Demme's screwball comedy riot Something Wild (1986).Witness the couple try to earn their Cinemania-c badge by suppressing their hangover to take part in New York's exciting and constant appreciation of film history. Will their love of the movies get them through the whole day? Which of the day's movies will be top of the heap? And is Noah's answer to that question full of shit? You're a New Yorker now buddy, think for yourself!!This episode was recorded on the land of the Lenape people, and we recognise the Lenape people as the Indigenous caretakers and traditional custodians of this land and water.PATREONINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKLETTERBOXDmidnightscreeningproductions@gmail.comSound: Anthony CarrArt: Kazuki KomatsuNEXT WEEK = NOSEferatu (Scratch-N-Sniff Horror) feat. The kids are NOT alright: big brain genius Darcey Eagle got us to watch two parental nightmares, Larry Clark's disturbing indie Kids (1995) and Catherine Hardwicke's suburban melodrama Thirteen (2003). Both movies got their tween actors involved in the filmmaking process—for better and worse—and are sure to make u clutch ya pearls at the tongue-piercing, shoplifting, assault and violence on display. They're tough watches, each introducing us to stars like Chloe Sevigny, Rosario Dawson, and Evan Rachel Wood back when they were mere bbs...but only ONE film can triumph as the ultimate adolescent cautionary tale. Midnight Marathon: THE WILD ANGELS x THE TRIP // ROGER CORMANIA PART 3
Rev up your engines and pop them pills: we put our season of CORMANIA to rest with this influential, psychedelic wrap-up of a double feature. Before Easy Rider, Roger Corman put 1960s bikers on screen in The Wild Angels, and then adapted his LSD journey into The Trip, a feature-length hippie music video scripted by Jack Nicholson. As Eliza and Noah finish their six-film adventure into the late director's ouevre, just what has been learnt here? Although the guy might now be best known as a one-man film school (responsible for sparking the careers of Coppola, Scorsese, Demme, Cameron and many more), we're startin' off our look at Corman's own directorial output with two black-and-white early-ish works. One's a provocative, stark drama about small-town racism and the other's a smart lil black comedy lampooning the art world—but both'll whet your CORMANIA as we dive into a filmmaker who quietly shaped Hollywood's 1960s landscape. "Movies don't create psychos: movies make psychos more creative." If these words from 1996's Scream are true, then DANG are Noah + Eliza wildly creative by now.
