As we've gotten older I've noticed that in many of the social networks of my friends (male in particular) have become a shell of what they used to be. Whilst this could be a quality over quantity scenario, and this is arguably part of the reason, I see something else far more destructive is that many are falling into what is described as 'The Loneliness Epidemic'. In a world where we feel connected by the mirage created through the digital world many of us often feel less connected than ever because digital connection is a poor substitute for connection another human in real life. In this episode I reflect on a number of social gatherings I've recently hosted, my observations of social dynamics over the last 10-15 years and how I think we ought to apply game theory to our networks rather than the default tit-for-tat strategy so many of us fall into. In this episode I share a **Day 50 progress update on my 75 Hard journey**. For those unfamiliar, **75 Hard** is a mental toughness program created by Andy Frisella. The challenge requires strict daily habits including two workouts per day, following a diet, reading personal development books, drinking a gallon of water, and taking a progress photo every day for 75 days. Now that I’ve reached **Day 50**, I reflect on: • The hardest parts of the challenge so far • Unexpected mental and physical changes • Lessons about discipline and consistency • Where I've struggled and nearly failed This episode is a **raw mid-challenge reflection** on building discipline, staying accountable, and pushing through when motivation fades. They've hit 30 and they've done some cool things. There's the common stereotype of business people playing golf on the regular which gets mistaken as a pure networking tool. Coming out of the board road and onto the green, pitch, track or simply a coffee shop is an important yet subtle analytical tool on deciding whether you should proceed in a business arrangement with someone i.e. use a small game to determine whether you should play a bigger (higher stakes) game. Also there are times where engaging in a short term game (single visit) in certain domains, e.g. as a customer to a dentist or mechanic, can be detrimental to your wealth and health as opposed to playing a longer term game (repeat customer). During my travels I've had the privilege to be invited to see life from cultures far from my own. Sometimes this has resulted in being shock with discovering someone you met married in their mid teens, has worked full time since they were even younger and eat foods far far different from our own. Not everything should be accepted as there are any parts of many cultures, our own included, that doesn't require a belief system to see that another human being is suffering. One of the most important skills that we as humans use is Sales. Whether we are aware of it or not we all need to sell be it in a job interview or when we are meeting a new romantic, business or friendship interest. After having been running (distances 5 km and above) for over a year now I pulled off a personal feat shaving 10 min off my original City2Surf time finishing the beautiful 14 km's in a tad under 81 minutes. Whilst I'm clearly not an athlete I'm rather proud of where I've come from and am probably in the best shape of my life as I approach 30. In todays episode I make an analogue between nation states and cell membranes* with respect to current state of migration in the western world. We are currently seeing a rise in racism and xenophobia with movements on the right gaining traction and the 'others' being singled out. Is there a valid reason behind this shift? I make the argument that it is indeed valid though often misdirected. I think that the energies of those engaged in highly xenophobic activities are misguided in targeting those who don't look and speak like them and should rather be directed towards to political classes who fuel these problems. Even though I anticipate that the changes in the west already taking place (both via the existing actions of politicians in opening the mass migration flood gates and the counter movements that will arise to combat this) will make life harder for me and those who look like myself I think that despite all its flaws the cultures, values and opportunities of the west are worth preserving. Here I make a firm stand for sustainable and selective migration to the west well below current levels. * I incorrectly switch to 'cell wall' a few times during this episode but really I mean cell membrane! In this episode I highlight how the December 2017 changes to Australia's marriage act to legalise same-sex marriage may inadvertently help straight men in the future as the result of nth order effects as a means to demonstrate the principle. A simple high value add you can make to your lives and those around you especially in 3rd places where you neither live or (explicitly) work is to be the person to say 'Hello' and introduce yourself. I've been more reliant on on doing this to make connections since travelling solo for the past few months and will definitely be incorporating this into my day to day going forward. The current phase western civilisation is going through involves pitting men against women which is, in my very humble opinion, incredibly detrimental to our society.
