More Than Fine
by Uncommon Valor
If you're like me, there was a time when everything seemed to be going just fine. Until it wasn't.I don't know what it's been for you. Maybe a divorce. Sickness. Rejection. Addiction. Abuse. Bankruptcy. Loss. Whatever it is, I know it has you asking, "Can my life ever be good again?"But what if I told you that your place of trouble is also the place where hope is found? I know it doesn't make sense but from what I've seen, it's how God does things. And that means you're not stuck – and you're not staying here. He's the One who says, "I will...transform the Valley of Trouble into a gateway of hope." (Hosea 2:15) In His hands, things are going to be more than okay. You are going to be more than fine. For more on faith + emotional & spiritual wellness, visit www.UncommonValor.co

233. A Life of Presence, Not Performance
When we're wounded in life, we often start to "perform" for love and approval. But when what we do on the outside is rooted in pain, we will always end up with results that are not what we really want. In this episode, I share how pain and woundedness impair the way we relate to others, particularly as it relates to God's design for femininity and masculinity. But I also talk about how, through pain, we learn much about what it is to stop performing and be truly present, and the life-giving invitation to others that our lives become in the process. 232. When You Forgive (But Still Feel Angry)
Anger is one of the more complicated emotions we have to deal with. Not only does it not feel great, but sometimes it seems to remain- even after you've done the work to forgive someone. In this episode, I share about an experience that caused me to realize that something deeper is often hidden inside of our anger. I also share how thinking differently about your wounds can give you the patience and perspective you need to actually benefit in the aftermath. 231. Yes, God Wants to Help You with THAT.
When it comes to the things we struggle with in life, sometimes we think they are too small for God to care about. Other times, we think they are so big that maybe we are just supposed to learn to take care of things on our own. Neither of those things are true. In today's episode, I share about a very small example of what it looks like to fully depend on God, and how it changes the way we look at challenges in life, both big and small. 230. Do It Scared (But Do It Small)
Have you ever uncovered a lie you've believed about yourself, only to struggle to believe the truth is true? Sometimes you can know something intellectually is true, and yet not believe it because it doesn't match your experience. And sometimes the only way to change that is to change your experience. In this episode, I'm sharing about confronting old ways of doing things and what it looks like to "do it scared." However, I also discuss how that doesn't always mean doing it big and that small steps can have major impact. 229. God Is NOT Mad at You
Do you feel like God is mad at you? Like He's just "up there," watching and waiting for you to mess up? If so, you're not alone. Many Christians do. But that's not the truth of who God is, and that is not how He feels about you. In this episode, I share about the distorted perceptions we often have of God and how to figure out where they come from. I also share about the difference between condemnation and conviction and how even in your mistakes, you can see that God is SO for you. 228. Healing Isn't Always Deep Work (Sometimes It's De-Light Work)
While emotional and spiritual healing does involve deep work, it doesn't always have to be that way. Healing also involves the light work of learning to experience goodness again- to see it, savor it, and expect it in your everyday life. In this episode, I share the story behind my middle name and the secret treasure buried within it that I wouldn't unearth for four decades. I also discuss how the Lord leaves these intentional treasures for each of us, and how you can go in search of them too. Champion Forward co-founder and retired professional baseball player Ben Zobrist opens up about his experiences with "doing the work" in his own life. We also talk about the role of pain in becoming emotionally aware, the benefits of processing emotions within safe community, and how to pass on the benefits of doing the work (even if imperfectly) with the ones you love. 222. Relational Regulation (Triggers & Intrusive Thoughts Pt. 2)
Triggered traumas and intrusive thoughts can leave you feeling profoundly fearful and alone. Regulation techniques can help calm the nervous system, but an underlying sense of loneliness and vulnerability may remain. In this episode, I share about the role of relationships in regulating emotions, and how an early lack of support can cause distress into adulthood. Also, I share ways to incorporate your relationship with God into a regulation experience that not only deepens your sense of peace, but invites healing into wounds of emotional misattunement, abandonment, abuse, and neglect. With the intensity of the season, it can be hard to figure out what you need while supporting the needs of the people in your life. 211. Can You Say No?
Can you say 'no'? Sometimes we say 'yes' to everything because we want to be seen as dependable and reliable. We like being the one people can count on – and we like how that makes us feel. It makes us feel like we matter. But what what if you already matter? What if your significance isn't tied to how much you do for other people at all? In this episode, I share how I discovered I had a problem with saying 'no,' and how being forced into a season of 'no' actually helped me get free from trouble that people pleasing inevitably causes. 210. The Hamster Wheel of Insecurity
The strange thing about insecurity is the more we try to control it, the more it ends up controlling us. Insecurities are built on lies, and while there might be one big one you are aware of, often there are dozens of little ones that go with it. Which makes untangling them like untangling a knotted necklace. Ugh. In this episode, I share about the unexpected way I discovered the web of lies beneath my own insecurities, and how shifting what you choose to agree with puts you on the fast track to freedom from it all. 209. When the Storm is Inside Your Mind
We often think of the storms of life as the circumstances outside of us. But what do you do when the storm is inside? Our thought lives can be really stormy. Obsessions, worries, and intrusive thoughts can cause us to feel like we are at the mercy of our minds. Is there a way to make it all stop? In this episode, I share my own struggles with troubling thoughts and finding freedom in my mind. 208. When You're Not Getting Any Answers
"Why?" It's a question we all ask. Why did this have to happen? Why is this my story? Why can't my life be like everyone else's? We can get frustrated and discouraged when the answers don't come. And yet, not getting answers isn't necessarily a bad thing. We can get fixated with getting all the answers. We read books, go to seminars, or Google, "What does it mean when..." But if you got the answers, would you actually feel better? What if answers aren't actually what you need? In this episode, I share a little about my own journey with grasping for answers, and how in not getting the answers, I discovered what we all need instead. 206. "Keeping the Peace" Doesn't Work | Boundaries Explained
If setting boundaries (or sticking to them) is hard for you, it's probably because of THIS one thing: You're trying to "keep the peace." When we don't have good boundaries, it's usually because we want to avoid conflict, or avoid losing a relationship. But If you have to work so hard to "keep the peace," do you even have real peace in the first place? In this week's episode, I share why we often strive to "keep the peace," and what happens when we stop all that and experience Jesus' true, lasting peace. I also discuss how knowing His peace helps us find relationships where we can share peace, and deal with relationships where peace isn't shared. 194. I Can't Do This! | What To Do When You Keep Falling Short with Becky Beresford
Culture is full of messaging that tells us we can do anything we put our minds to – and yet somewhere along the line, we begin to see that this is just not true. When the circumstances of our lives leave us feeling like we're falling short, the resulting shame and disappointment can be overwhelming. ABOUT THIS SHOW
If you're like me, there was a time when everything seemed to be going just fine.
