Movie Mandates: THE GENERAL (Silent Movies)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's Silent Movies month and I'm kicking things off with the Buster Keaton classic, THE GENERAL, a wacky adventure based on an amazing true story from the American Civil War that dares ask the question, "What if we changed things so the protagonists were fighting on the side of monstrous racists?!" You'll thrill to Keaton's stunning stunt work and deft comedic touch but you won't be able to root for him! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 12:35 - The General review 1:00:45 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: DUEL (TV Movies)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! We're wrapping up TV Movies month with Keleigh's mandated movie, Duel, the feature film debut of Steven Spielberg, which aired on ABC back in 1971, about a man terrorized by a semi-truck on the lonely highways of the California desert. Is there a man of flesh and blood driving the truck or is it a ghost truck, forever cursed to roam the Antelope Valley Freeway to sate its unquenchable thirst for blood? It's just a dude but he's not really important so if you like "ghost truck" better, let's go with that! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 14:36 - Duel review 1:02:35 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: BRIAN’S SONG (TV Movies)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month, we're indulging in TV Movies and I've mandated BRIAN'S SONG, a docudrama that aired on ABC in the early 70s and, according to our father, is the only film to ever turn him into a sobbing mess. Were we similarly moved by the friendship between Chicago Bears teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers? One thing's for certain. If Brian doesn't have a song in BRIAN'S SONG, we're going to be very disappointed. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 22:12 - Brian's Song review 59:58 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: MR. RIGHT (Good Bad Guys)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! February is Good Bad Guys month, a celebration of protagonists who aren't really the best people. We're concluding this month's theme with Keleigh's mandated movie, MR. RIGHT, a film about a former hitman who leaves the life and makes amends for his past deeds by killing people who hire hitmen. Well, at least his heart's in the right place! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 21:11 - Mr. Right review 56:23 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: BABY ASSASSINS (Good Bad Guys)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! February is Good Bad Guys month, a time to celebrate the ubiquity of anti-heroes in our media. We're kicking off the festivities with my mandated movie, BABY ASSASSINS. Are they assassins who target babies or babies who are assassins? Only 17 ways to find out and one of them is listening to this podcast! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 24:20 - Baby Assassins review 1:05:52 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: DON’T BE A MENACE TO SOUTH CENTRAL WHILE DRINKING YOUR JUICE IN THE HOOD (Parody)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Parody month concludes with Keleigh's mandated movie: DON'T BE A MENACE TO SOUTH CENTRAL WHILE DRINKING YOUR JUICE IN THE HOOD. Now, I know what you're thinking. It was called "Menace II Society" so shouldn't the title be "Don't Be a Menace II South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood"? Yes but I think we can cut the Wayans Bros. some slack for this oversite due to the restraint they showed with their film's title by name dropping "Higher Learning," "Poetic Justice," and "Jungle Fever" in the film's tagline rather than jamming them in the title as well. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 21:02 - Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood review 56:56 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA (Parody)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's parody month so I've mandated THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA, a sendup of no-budget, sci-fi schlock that permeated the 50s. While it's true this movie is the same three jokes repeated over and over, those three jokes are really funny! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 17:08 - The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra review 1:03:58 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS (Happy Holidays)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Happy Holidays month concludes with Eight Crazy Nights, Adam Sandler's laudable attempt to plug the Hanukkah-shaped gap in the holiday movie pantheon. Unfortunately, it's so bad I'd argue a marathon of Salo, Society, Audition, A Serbian Film, and both Nekromantic movies would be a much more pleasant sit. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 16:46 - Eight Crazy Nights review 57:07 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: BETTER WATCH OUT (Happy Holidays)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's December and we're celebrating holidays most happy with movies that are at least tangentially related to the holidays, if not necessarily happiness. As such, my mandated movie is Better Watch Out, a home invasion movie where a babysitter and her young charges are in mortal danger! No seriously, this is one of those movies where kids can die! So, maybe not happy (unless you really don't like kids) but it takes place during Christmas so it totally counts! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 12:30 - Better Watch Out review 1:03:07 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: THE TREE OF LIFE (What Did I Just Watch?)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month we're mandating movies that, upon viewing, make you say, "What did I just watch?" and we're concluding with Terrence Malick's The Tree Of Life, a movie that... Um. Well, you see... Hmm. It's got Brad Pitt in it? And he's like, a guy. Who does stuff. And things happen. But, it's kinda like a metaphor? For like, uh, life. And stuff. Look, we don't know what we just watched but that's not going to stop us from talking about it! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 26:18 - The Tree Of Life review 1:11:55 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates – HOUSE (What Did I Just Watch?)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month we're mandating movies that, upon viewing, make you say, "What did I just watch?" We're kicking it off with my mandated movie: House. No, not the William Katt movie from 1985, though that's a fun one, we're talking the nearly inexplicable Japanese one from 1977. The one featuring a cast of characters named after their own archetypes who visit a the titular house and are menaced in truly bizarre ways. One's eaten by a piano, one gets bitten on the butt by the disembodied head of her classmate, and another loses her pants but no one appears to notice. House. I can't guarantee you'll like it. But I can confidently assert you'll never forget it! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 13:35 - House review 1:06:28 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (Time Travel)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Time Travel month concludes with my sister's mandated movie: Safety Not Guaranteed. It's about a guy who built a time machine (or did he?) and the undercover reporter who will travel back in time with him (or will she?). After all, safety is not guaranteed so they may just blow up (or will they?). Join our past selves in the future and find out! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 14:23 - Safety Not Guaranteed review 52:11 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: MARS ATTACKS! (As Bad As We Remember?)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! We're wrapping up "As Bad As We Remember?" month with Keleigh's mandated movie: Mars Attacks! We saw this in the theater back when it came out and found it so tonally removed from what the marketing had promised that neither of us liked it. Years later, knowing what the film's tone and sense of humor was, I found I appreciated it more but my sister hasn't seen it since that initial screening, nearly 30 years ago. Will knowing what kind of movie she's in for change her opinion? Only 37 ways to find out and one of them is listening to this podcast! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 14:18 - Mars Attacks! review 59:31 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. This month we're revisiting movies we hated with a passion that burns hotter than the fire of a thousand suns to determine if they're As Bad As We Remember. Today's mandated movie is Babe, a film so awful it has the dubious distinction of being the first movie I ever shut off half way through. Movie Mandates: GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (Ani-May)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Ani-May month concludes with my sister's mandated movie: Grave of the Fireflies, an anime about a pair of young, sibling war orphans doing what they can to survive in war-ravaged Japan back in 1945. No gravity-defying hairstyles. No giant robots. No tentacle monsters. Just the hilarious misadventures of two innocent children slowly starving to death in squalor and misery. It's an animated treat for the entire family! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 10:32 - Grave of the Fireflies review 1:09:12 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: A SILENT VOICE (Ani-May)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's Ani-May, the month where we indulge in animated films from Japan! Hey, did you see the one about the busty high school girls with the short skirts and gravity-defying, rainbow colored hair who save the world by piloting giant robots with the one male who's an insufferable loser but for some inexplicable reason his classmates, his homeroom teacher, his childhood friend, her mom, and his sister all want to jump his bones? And there's a talking cat? Yeah, I guess that doesn't narrow it down. I should have been more specific. Anyway, I mandated we watch something else. A Silent Voice, is a about a guy who bullies a girl in grade school but feels bad about it and attempts to make amends years later. Will she forgive him? Should she forgive him? Are there giant robots? 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 15:47 - A Silent Voice review 1:07:04 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: PHASE IV (Animal Attack)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's Animal Attack month and we're kicking off the festivities with Phase IV, a mid- 70s sci-fi film where ants attempt to take over the Earth. Can they be stopped by two ridiculously well-funded university scientists studying the ants' organizational and offensive prowess with all the enthusiasm and urgency of a cadaver with overdue library books? No. Sorry 'bout the spoilers but hey, maybe the survivors will have a place in the new ant empire! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 12:45 - Phase IV review 56:08 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: STAND BY ME (Kids, Not That One)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! To round out Kids (Not That One) month, my sister mandated we watch Stand By Me, a movie based on the Stephen King book, The Body. So, why the title change? We would assume the producers wanted to sell more soundtracks (yes, Stand By Me features prominently, along with a bevy of other bops from the 50s and 60s) and didn't want the coming-of-age film to be mistaken for one of the glut of erotic thrillers packing theaters in the late 80s. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 20:48 - Stand By Me review 1:02:43 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: COP CAR (Kids, Not That One)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month's theme is Kids (Not That One) so I mandated we watch Cop Car, a movie about two kids who steal a cop car from a, get this, evil cop. Unfortunately, the evil cop is played by Kevin Bacon so we might have trouble rooting for the kids. Plus, kids are annoying. Am I right? 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 16:59 - Cop Car review 55:52 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! February is Best Buds month and we're wrapping up with Keleigh's mandated movie, Midnight Run. Granted, our protagonists don't start out as best buds; their relationship is, in fact, rather contentious. But one can't run from the cops, the feds, the mob, and bounty hunters together and NOT end up the bestest of buds, right? 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 19:16 - Midnight Run review 1:00:15 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: RUNNING SCARED (Best Buds)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! February is Best Buds month and we're mandating movies where the protagonists are such buds they'll unashamedly bring each other and their one-night stands post-coital donuts, a gesture only the bestest of buds would make. And so I mandated Running Scared, a movie where, I kid you not, that actually happens. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 17:10- Running Scared review 55:36- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Second Breakfast)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! January is Second Breakfast month where we call we're allowed a mulligan on a previously mandated movie that didn't turn out so good. While we both enjoyed Keleigh's recent Artsy Fartsy pic of The Green Knight, she thought she could squeeze a bit more artsy out of the fartsy and mandated we watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film, unlike The Green Knight, is one we both, shamefully, had never seen. But now we have and because we're both super smart little cookies, we understood everything that happened in the movie! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 18:24- 2001: A Space Odyssey review 1:03:37- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (Second Breakfast)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! January is the time for Second Breakfast where we call a do-over on one of our mandated movies and try another. For "Shoulda Seen This By Now" month back in October, I mandated the original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. I shouldn't have. It was awful. So, I'm taking another crack at the theme with another movie I shoulda seen by now, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. All I know is that it's got Dolly Parton in it and that's good enough for me because Dolly's awesome! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 13:12 - The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas review 1:03:25 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: THE GREEN KNIGHT (Artsy Fartsy)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! December is Artsy Fartsy month so Keleigh mandated we watch The Green Knight, a movie we've both seen but never had a chance to discuss. UNTIL NOW!!! This movie has so much artsy fartsy stuff to talk about! Metaphor, color theory, mise-en-scène, etc. So we spend most of the podcast imitating Alicia Vikander's delightful way of pronouncing "lady." Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Nutty November concludes with Keleigh's mandated pick: Blockers, a movie that contains a handful of nuts. That was a joke. If you've seen the movie, you get it. If you haven't seen the movie, you probably still get it. Not because it's a simple and obvious joke but because you're super sophisticated and insightful. Attractive too! We're continuing our celebration of movies we Shoulda Seen By Now and unsurprisingly, this week's mandated movie is another classic. I mean, if it weren't a classic, should we really have seen it by now? Anyway, Keleigh has mandated we watch the 70s classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a movie I've seen. Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Not necessarily by one of the characters but that's cool too! My mandated movie is a stupendous serving of 60s scifi shlock, Moon Zero Two. Don't let the fact that this film has been featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 fool you; it's definitely worth a sans riff watch! July is a Kaijubilee where we celebrate all monsters big and stompy. Well, not all of them. We only have two shows a month and let's face it, some Kaiju are just goofy bozos (*cough* Gabara *cough*). Anyway, for my part, I've mandated we watch Shin Godzilla. Because it looks neat and I haven't seen it. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 9:23 - Shin Godzilla review 56:40 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: BASIC INSTINCT (Pearl Clutchers)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! June is Pearl Clutchers month and my sister mandated Basic Instinct, a riff on the noire genre most famous for its interrogation scene where... oh my heavens! Just thinking about it had me reflexively clutching my pearls so hard they broke. Darn you, Basic Instinct! Do you know how laborious it is to rethread these things? How dare you! Why, there ought to be a law! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 6:01- Basic Instinct review 1:03:16- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: CUTIES (Pearl Clutchers)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! June is Pearl Clutchers month and I mandated Cuties, a movie about a dance troupe of young girls who, lacking any guidance from the adults in their lives, mimic the overtly sexual dress and dance moves they see online. This film created a firestorm a couple years back, not due to the film's content or themes, but Netflix's obnoxiously thoughtless marketing that focused on the young leads posing provocatively in their skimpy dance duds. How's the movie? Well, that's what we're here to find out! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 7:16- Cuties review 1:07:43- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR (As Good As We Remember?)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month we're asking if the movies from our childhood are As Good As We Remember. For our final episode this month, my sister has mandated we watch Flight of the Navigator, a movie that answers a question we wouldn't think to ask until decades later: What if Siri was Pee-wee Herman? 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 16:40- Flight of the Navigator review 54:52- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Movie Mandates: THE FACULTY (As Good As We Remember?)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! This month my sister and I are mandating older movies we enjoyed when we were younger but haven't seen in decades. Today, we're taking a look at my mandated movie, The Faculty, a late '90s riff on The Invasion of the Body Snatchers set in a small town high school. We saw it in the theater when we were in high school and thought it was spiffy! But we're adults now. Is it... Movie Mandates: HOLES (Could Be a Porno)
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Could Be a Porno month comes to an end with our final movie that could be a porno, Holes! Who's holes? How many holes? What's going in or coming out of those holes? We'll, we'll just have to watch the movie and find out! Porno or children's film, one thing's for certain: it's likely not a fun watch for trypophobes! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 10:46- Holes review 56:51- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie.
