"Morfema" marks the second release on Fala Nocturna, and the first full EP to carry the Philipp de Castro name. The material began as a live set developed at the end of last year; Morfema reworks it into something else entirely, keeping its instincts intact even where the sound moved elsewhere. Where his past work traced sharp, angular paths, this EP moves like a body submerged in dark water. Downtempo in pulse, textural more than melodic, though what melody surfaces only deepens its shadows. Patient and low slung, it's built for a dancefloor willing to take the time for the sound to evolve. Built around modular synthesis, the EP folds in acid lines that frequently climb toward high resonance peaks, filters screaming before they release. Beneath it all, a choir of voices recurs (faint, human, persistent), a quiet counterweight to the machinery around it, sharing the same room, never fully resolving into either. The EP's structure mirrors its title. Each of the five tracks (Morfema, Eufemismo, Oxímoro, Acronímia, Antífrase) borrows its name from a linguistic term in his native tongue Portuguese, words concerned with how meaning gets built, softened, and reversed. Rather than illustrating these words, the tracks work from their definitions outward, letting each term's meaning bend into a loose, unwritten narrative that the listener is left to complete. There’s a roughness to the movement that gives it some weight, with enough swing and pressure to hold attention without overplaying its hand. Lee Coombs’ two remixes take the same material in more specific directions. The Acid Mix strips things back into a darker, more dubbed-out framework, leaning into repetition, space and low-end tension rather than immediate release. It’s the version most clearly aimed at later hours, where atmosphere does as much work as momentum. The Classic Mix turns toward late-'80s warehouse house, pulling out a looser, more open kind of energy. It gestures toward that period’s rawness and uplift without sounding overly referential. Across the three versions, Tell Me sketches out a small but useful range: peak-time drive, heads-down pressure and a more classic warehouse swing. Two of the trio are gigging DJs, with club experience dating back to the nineties, and the other is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer of similar vintage. Over the years, however, the music made by this trio has taken on, at once, both a panoramic view of the electronic music landscape and a microscopic lens to the human condition affected by such music. At times there’s an almost dystopian air of dark claustrophobia about these tracks. Restless anxiety is evoked by eerie transformations of beats and bass, seemingly disjointed synth rhythms coalescing into ferocious grooves. But despite the darkness, you can never predict when it might pitch you into warm nostalgic reverie, or memories of more innocent times. How can this be? Maybe it’s because the music references the unexpected against a framework of the familiar. Abstract cinematic elements, suggesting an epic, even Brutalist, dimension, are woven into rhythms that fortify our frail and precious humanity. Three producers from the label family step in, each pulling on a different thread of the original and following it into their own corner of the dance floor. Da Ron leans into the pulse and turns it into an ambient House weapon: rolling groove, warm low end and dreamy, textured flourishes that keep the emotional core intact while pushing the energy toward special moments. Manu Dannenberg strips things right back for the Tunnel Vision Mix, recasting One After Another as a minimal dub strip. A pivotal figure in the Piedmont music scene, Lunardi was active both as a DJ and as the owner of several disco clubs. The label operated for several years in the latter half of the 1970s, releasing mainly productions connected to the Italian dance and pop scene. Since 2016, the original master tapes from the Voom Voom Music catalog have been owned by Gianluca Pandullo (I-Robots), a close friend of Ivo and Luca Lunardi. Through his labels Opilec Music and Turin Dancefloor Express, Pandullo oversees their preservation and historical enhancement. The artistic direction of Voom Voom Music was marked by a distinct sonic identity — eclectic yet visionary. The Turin-based label founded by Ivo Lunardi embraced a sound that blended disco, pop, and rock influences, interwoven with African American grooves in a pioneering, international perspective. Voom Voom Music was among the first Italian labels to introduce this kind of musical language in the country. A prime example is the Italian edition of the debut album by B.T. Express, Do It ('Til You're Satisfied), released in LP, 8-Track Cartridge, cassette, and 7" single formats. The label’s productions clearly reflected the influence of black and funk music, as evidenced by the references and inspirations running through its catalogue. The track “Lady Pick-Up”, for instance, includes direct nods to “Do It Good” by KC & The Sunshine Band and Manu Dibango’s iconic “Soul Makossa”, revealing a musically refined and contemporary sensibility. Among the label’s most representative works is Splash (1977) by the Stratosferic Band, a project conceived by Luigi Venegoni — producer, songwriter, and guitarist of Arti e Mestieri. Venegoni’s artistic journey spanned from progressive rock to space and Italo disco. The album artwork was designed by Piero D’Amore (1944 - 2022), a charismatic and multifaceted figure of Turin’s art scene (one of his works was even acquired by the MoMA in New York). The record includes a disco reinterpretation of Van Morrison’s classic “Gloria”, and “Splashdown”, a track fusing the disco-rock energy of Rockets and Space. In contrast, “Nowhere” revisits the 1975 single by Hokis Pokis, a soul/disco band from Nassau County (New York), transforming it into a vibrant disco-funk number. Another significant expression of the label’s catalogue is the afro-rock sound of M’Bamina, an Italo-Congolese group whose rhythmic energy and dialogue between African percussion and Western funk evoke the style of international formations such as Osibisa — themselves linked to a rich artistic history in Italy.
