Potential playoff expansion plus Pete Carroll to coach the Poly Bowl
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and intern India Otto are back in studio discussing the latest news and notes around the USC football program and college football in general. With spring football in the rearview mirror we are keeping tabs on how the Trojans are navigating the off-season and how the sport we all love makes tweaks to the rules and post-season. Last week the American Football Coaches Association voted to expand the college football playoffs along with a few other modifications to the college football calendar. Their proposal would double the size of the CFP bracket from 12 to 24 teams and eliminate the conference championship games. It would also condense the regular season with only one bye week, preserve the Army/Navy game and make sure the season ends by the second week in January. The crew also talks about former USC head coach Pete Carroll coaching in the Polynesian Bowl against former Texas head coach Mack Brown, the "five to play five" proposal in college football, expanding the NCAA basketball tournament to 76 teams and former Trojan safety Will Harris getting promoted in Miami to the secondary coach and passing game coordinator. NFL Draft preview and ranking USC football position group expectations
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and intern India Otto are back in studio discussing this weekend's huge NFL Draft and the top-rated USC prospects that are hoping to hear their name called. They also take a crack at ranking each of the Trojan football position groups by level of expectations heading into the season following what we learned about the team in the spring. Kicking things off with our draft coverage, all eyes will be on wide receiver Makai Lemon will is expected to go in the top-half of the first round, likely as the second or third wide receiver off the board. Safeties Kamari Ramsey and Bishop Fitzgerald, wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane, tight end Lake McRee and linebacker Eric Gentry are other former USC players that are the most likely to get picked up in the later rounds. They finish off the show talking about the 2026 bowl tie-ins sticking with the old conference alignment (Pac-12) and answering listener questions from our live chat, emails and The Peristyle message board. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his thoughts on USC spring football 2026
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the Trojans wrapping up spring football with a lot of positive takeaways from the five weeks of workouts. With the defensive staff upgraded and 31 new incoming freshman on campus, the team should be poised for a run at the College Football Playoffs. Coach Hyde feels this is the time for Lincoln Riley to shine and there should be no excuses why this program can't take care of business on the field this fall. The guys also talk about how this is the end of an era, with the final football practice that the team will come out of the John McKay Center and cross the street to get to Howard Jones Field. In the fall the Bloom Center will open and players can come right out of the building onto the practice field. Once again USC did not host a traditional spring game and Coach Hyde felt it was a missed opportunity for the team to put one final showcase together and get another weekend of headlines heading into the long off-season. Fans will be able to check out the team on Saturday, April 11 for the Fan Appreciation Day along with the great Swim with Mike event. Coach Harvey Hyde has been part of the Peristyle Podcast since 2008 and in the USC football world he is an expert on X's and O's, personnel, coaching philosophies and recruiting. Tunnel Vision: USC spring ball pushes through and recruiting gets red hot
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham Shotgun Spratling and intern Makena Arteaga are back in studio talking about the Trojans finishing up spring practice week three and the wave of commitments from some of the top high school football players in Southern California, including a recent Oregon flip for an elite offensive tackle. USC finished up spring practice No. 11 on Saturday in the Coliseum, completing the third of four weeks of spring football workouts. The crew gives their thoughts on what they have seen and heard out on Howard Jones Field with head coach Lincoln Riley and new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson getting the troops ready for the highly anticipated 2026 football season. Practices were more concentrated this spring, running for five weeks instead of six (with one week off for spring break), and four workouts per week instead of three. March is a critical month for the future of Trojan football with Patterson's new defensive scheme being implemented and 31 true freshmen getting in the mix. On the recruiting front general manager Chad Bowden and the squad are catching fire, trying to follow up on the No. 1 ranked high school class for 2026 with another impressive haul in 2027. Since spring football started dozens of prospects have continually visited campus to check out practice and so far three new commitments have been announced. It started with San Diego Cathedral Catholic four-star athlete Honor Fa'alave-Johnson followed by Mater Dei four-star defensive back Danny Lang and Saturday's big flip from the Ducks in Servite four-star offensive tackle Drew Fielder. The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down another unblemished week of action for USC baseball as the Trojans went 5-0 with midweek wins over San Diego State and Cal State Bakersfield along with a sweep of Washington. They also talk with the catalyst of the win over Bakersfield, senior outfielder Jack Basseer, who hit a walk-off two-run homer to give USC the victory over the Roadrunners. Basseer discusses the walk-off winner as well as his journey to playing for his dream school and how he's been able to improve his game in his second season playing for USC. After a break, Shotgun and Kasey take a look at the Trojans' five-game week noting three positives, including Mason Edwards' continued dominance and the contributions of bench players and deep bullpen arms have helped USC start another win streak after their 19-0 start was stopped. They also try to find three negatives after five wins. (Some tasks are more difficult than others.) Shotgun and Kasey close out the show taking a look at where the Trojans' stand in the rankings -- moving all the way up to No. 5 in one top 25 ranking and earning a first-place vote in the coaches poll -- before previewing the beginning of the toughest two-week stretch of the season for the Trojans. Dedeaux Download: Sean Allen talks electric start to season for USC pitchers
The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down another strong week of action for USC baseball despite the Trojans suffering their first loss of the season in the midst of Midwestern snowstorm. They also talk with the conductor of USC's elite production on the mound, pitching coach Sean Allen, about how his hurlers have been able to have so much success this season. Allen discusses how the Trojans attacked a stretch with eight games in nine days and how his pitchers continue to grow throughout the season with Grant Govel unleashing a slider in his last start and Mason Edwards' continued nastiness with a breaking ball he changed during the offseason. After a break, Shotgun and Kasey take a look at the Trojans' five-game week noting three positives, including the continued success of the starting pitching despite Edwards finally giving up his first run of the season. They also look at the unusual circumstances that contributed to the Trojans having their program-record-tying 19-game win streak snapped. Shotgun and Kasey close out the show taking a look at where the Trojans' stand in the rankings -- making a big jump up to No. 13 in the D1Baseball top 25 -- and previewing another five-game week for Andy Stankiewicz's squad. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Combined losing streaks reach 11 as Trojan men head to B1G Tournament
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with Shotgun Spratling and Ahmad Akkaoui filling in to break down the latest news and recent struggles of USC men's and women's basketball. The Trojan men finished the regular season dropping their final seven games after suffering a pair of humbling losses to West Coast foes, falling by 19 points at Washington after holding a three-point lead at halftime and then getting blown out by 21 against UCLA with way too much baby blue cheering in the Galen Center. On the women's side, USC dropped its fourth straight game with a disappointing single-game showing in the Big Ten Tournament, falling to Washington by 12 points after the Women of Troy scored just 20 points in the first half. Shotgun and Ahmad break down all the latest action and look at what it will take for the Trojan men to go on a miraculous run in the Big Ten Tournament, starting with a rematch of the Washington team that just beat them soundly in Seattle. The podcasting duo also take a look at where the USC women stand as they've slid closer to the bubble in recent weeks. Dedeaux Download Podcast: Reliever Sax Matson talks stopper role, Trojans' 15-0 start
Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down another unblemished weekend for USC baseball as they improve to 15-0 on the season after opening the Big Ten season with a sweep of Illinois! They also talk with junior left-handed pitcher Sax Matson about the expansion of his role and the team's hot start to the season. Matson discusses the development of his arsenal during his time at USC, including the addition of a cutter this season to a fastball that's climbed five miles per hour since his freshman year and a breaking ball that has devastated hitters this year. He also chats about Sean Allen's coaching and the mentality he takes to the mound where he hopes to visit at least 40 times this season to tie the program appearances record. Matson again played a critical part in the Trojans' pitching efforts that were again electric as Mason Edwards and Grant Govel helped USC throw back-to-back 4-0 shutouts with the staff allowing only three runs over the weekend. USC fell behind early Sunday, but rallied back to take a 5-3 win to bookend the week with two-run victories after also rallying to defeat UC Irvine, 6-4, during a midweek matchup. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action and look forward to the upcoming double midweek matchups and the Trojans' first road trip out of Southern California this weekend when they travel to Nortwestern. Trojans depth on display as spring football kicks off
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and intern India Otto are back in studio breaking down the what they saw and heard from the first two days of USC spring football practice. On Tuesday morning head coach Lincoln Riley and company were back out on Howard Jones Field for their first spring workout of 2026, showing off some impressive depth with the addition of 32 incoming freshman that made up the No. 1 ranked high school recruiting class in the nation. Each position group had higher numbers that we typically see during spring workouts, giving this coaching staff a lot of opportunities to see what they have as they prepare for the 2026 college football season. The crew was at practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and they discuss what stood out to them, from the footwork and quick release of true freshman quarterback Jonas Williams, to the versatility of offensive lineman Tobias Raymond to the different feel at practice now that Gary Patterson is running the defense. They also share what Riley and the players that were made available to the media had to say, talking about these first days of spring with plenty of new faces wearing the cardinal and gold. They also talk about how the former Trojan football players performed at the NFL Combine, with Ja'Kobi Lane running an impressive 40-yard dash, Lake McRee putting on a show in the weight room and Makai Lemon showing his skills in the gauntlet. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Trojan seasons on the skids, Baker-Mazara no longer on team
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with Shotgun Spratling and new co-host India Otto breaking down the latest news and recent struggles of USC men's and women's basketball. The Women of Troy finished the regular season dropping their final three games after their worst loss of the season, giving up a career-high 40 points to Kiyomi McMiller and falling on the road at Penn State before losing at home against No. 2 UCLA after giving up 22 offensive rebounds. On the men's side, things have been even worse as the Trojans dropped their fourth and fifth consecutive games the last week, including losing by 19 points to UCLA and then giving up 51 second-half points to let No. 12 Nebraska rally from a halftime deficit and roll to an easy victory. But the bigger news came the day after the Huskers handed USC's men their fifth straight loss when the athletic department released a statement that active leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara was no longer a member of the program. The USC Triple-Double looks at all the latest in the Triple-Double segment before taking a look at where the USC men's and women's teams stand at this point in the season, seeing where they stack up in the standings and what is the latest bracketology involving the Trojans. Finally the podcasting duo moves into ta preview of the week ahead where both programs try to right the ship as the USC men try to turn around their fortunes and move back up the bubble pecking order while the Women of Troy head to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament. Both teams will face Washington first and then if USC's women win their opening conference tournament matchup, both teams will face off against UCLA. Helium Boys Podcast: Previewing USC's defense for 2026 spring camp
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the microphones with a little twist to their typical format as they take on previews for USC's upcoming 2026 spring camp, which begins on Tuesday. Part 2 takes on the defense. The boys of Helium skip on the pleasantries and jump straight into the spring preview of the defensive side in the following order: specialists, defensive tackles, defensive ends, linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties. USC's defense is full of questions as Hall of Fame head coach Gary Patterson takes over the coordinator duties. Though he uses a similar 4-2-5 defense to what the Trojans frequently used under former defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, what personnel will Patterson prefer and utilize in each of those 11 defensive positions. That's one of the things that makes this spring so intriguing as we yearn to decipher exactly what Patterson and his defensive coaching staff may be looking for from each position. The spring defense also presents some interesting opportunities for some of the youngsters, including the freshman from the No. 1-ranked recruiting class, because of some injuries that will keep some expected starters from being full participants. Who will step up amongst the young players? And who will show the biggest improvements from the returners? Dedeaux Download Podcast: Junior leadoff hitter Abbrie Covarrubias talks about Trojans 11-0 start
Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down another unblemished weekend for USC baseball as they improve to 11-0 on the season after recording their first four-game series sweep since 1978! They also talk with junior second baseman and leadoff hitter Abbrie Covarrubias about his and the team's hot start to the season. The Trojans' starting pitching was again electric as Mason Edwards, Grant Govel and Andrew Johnson all three were spectacular and Chase Herrell joined the mix with five scoreless innings on Thursday. The Trojans nearly had their second no-hitter of the season as Edwards and Sax Matson combined to throw TEN hitless innings Friday, but the game remained scoreless until the top of the 11th inning when USC broke the game open with six runs. That left the only question being whether the Trojans could get the final three outs before Cal Poly could get its first hit. They fell one pitch shy. Freshman Diego Velazquez got the first out but a grounder up the middle bounced off second base and out of the grasp of a sliding Covarrubias for an infield single. On the next pitch, Velazquez got a ground ball for a 5-4-3 double play to end the game. After being bottled up Friday, USC's bats responded in a big way, pounding out 21 hits and scoring 16 runs -- both season highs -- while Govel again was outstanding on the mound despite giving up his first earned run of the season on a solo homer late in his seven-inning start. The Sunday matchup appeared to be going similarly to the dominant performances USC had shown the rest of the weekend until the ninth inning. After Johnson had been lights out, allowing one run on four hits in 6.2 innings, the Trojans held a 6-1 lead going into the ninth inning. That's when the Mustangs finally showed some life, scoring five runs with the help of a two-out error to tie the game and send it into extra innings for the second time in the series. The 10th inning remained scoreless, but USC burst through with a pair of runs in the 11th and freshman Gavin Lauridsen closed it out for the 8-6 win to complete the sweetp. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action and look forward to the upcoming matchups against UC Irvine and the start of Big Ten play against Illinois. Helium Boys Podcast: Previewing USC's offense for 2026 spring camp
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the microphones with a little twist to their typical format as they take on previews for USC's upcoming 2026 spring camp, which begins on Tuesday. Part 1 takes on the offense. That doesn't stop them doing their traditional opening the Two-Minute Drill. Chris uses his Two-Minute Drill to fire back at some of the NFL Twitter criticisms of USC wide receiver Makai Lemon during his media interviews. Shotgun uses his TMD to shine some light on No. 25 USC Baseball, which improved to 11-0 on the season with an 8-6 win over Cal Poly. The boys of Helium then jump into the spring preview in the following order: quarterbacks, running back, tight ends, wide receivers, offensive line and kickers. USC has potentially another high-powered offense coming back with starting QB Jayden Maiava, five returning starters on the offensive line and two of the best Big Ten running backs in King Miller and Waymond Jordan. The offense will be looking to replace its top two wide receivers and tight ends, including Biletnikoff Award winner Lemon. Dedeaux Download Podcast: Assistant Sergio Brown joins after 7-0 Trojans sweep Rice
Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down USC baseball's 7-0 start to the season following a 10-run rule midweek win over Loyola Marymount and a sweep of Rice. The Trojans' weekend starting pitching was again electric as Mason Edwards, Grant Govel and Andrew Johnson all three won their starts to help USC get off to its best start since 2015. The Trojans' weekend starters did collectively give up their first run of the season but only combined to give up one while striking out 28 over 17 innings. USC's bats didn't have the same proficiency as they tallied only 13 runs on 18 hits over the three-game series, but they did enough to put the Trojans in position to stay unbeaten this season. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action and look forward to the upcoming matchups after they talk with USC assistant coach Sergio Brown, who talks about moving back into an on-field instruction role after being the director of player development the last three years for the Trojans. Brown also discusses the success of USC's pitchers, the Trojans' freshman class that is already providing key contributions and the impact getting Kevin Takeuchi back in the lineup has had after he missed much of last season with injury.
