Pod 366: A Weird Movies Podcast
by 366 Weird Movies
Pod 366: A Weird Movies Podcast is, as the title suggests, a podcast devoted to weird movies--from surrealist and cult film to the stranger side of exploitation--from the team at 366 Weird Movies (366weirdmovies.com). Each week we cover weird movie news and new releases, whether theatrical, streaming, or out on physical media. We also have a wide array of guests: past interviewees include Christiane Cegavaske, Damon Packard, Cory McAbee, Everything is Terrible's Commodore Gilgamesh and Ghoul Skool, Andrew Rakich, Rock! Shock! Pop!'s Ian Jane, and many more. Join us for the weekly weirdness!

Pod 366, Ep. 176: Does "Everything Must Go" Mean Physical Media? (Video)
We begin this episode reacting to Sony's decision to stop making physical copies of PlayStation games, the move's possible effect on movies, and the future of physical media in general. Then it's on to happier topics: Greg reports on the "Everything Must Go!" extended edition of "Backrooms," followed by notices about Harmony Korine-backed experimental Colombian picture "Barrio Triste," high-flying sci-fi feature "Black Box," and a rerelease of Tsai Ming-liang's minimalist musical "The Hole," plus a notice that "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror" has shown up on the dying physical media format.

Pod 366, Ep. 175: Stay Weird for Another 250 Years, America! (Video)
In our most patriotic episode ever, we bookend the pod with two American picks: Avalon Fast's witchy "Camp" (now in theaters) and Alex Winter's cancelled MTV comedy "The Idiot Box." In between, we celebrate Great Britain's "Children of the Wicker Man" documentary, France's nearly-complete "The Worlds of Lucile Hadžihalilović," Australia's macho drinking nightmare "Wake in Fright," and Italy's non-Biblical "Adam and Eve." It's a global melting pot of weirdness!

Pod 366, Ep. 174: Linus O'Brien on Rocky Horror's Strange Journey, and a LOT of new releases (Video)
With a record number of new releases (14!) to cover this week, this is one of our longest episodes. It's capped by a chat with Linus O'Brien, son of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" creator Richard O'Brien, about his new documentary "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror." The new releases are: Guy Maddin's "Careful" restoration and re-release; art-house experiment "Mare's Nest" in limited release; Criterion Collection releases of John Waters' "Desperate Living" and "Hairspray"; "Malpertuis" on Blu-ray for the first time; Crispin Glover in "Mr. K"; Julia Ducournau's "Alpha"; Blu-ray collections from outsider artists Kati Kelli and David "The Rock" Nelson; the surreal "Dogra Magra"; Jean Rollin's "The Nude Vampire"; a Roman Porno reboot box set featuring Sion Sono's "Antiporno"; and new discs of catalog titles "Weirdsville" and "What Dreams May Come." Then, with Linus O'Brien, we discuss growing up with a musician father, Rocky fans, neurodivergence, and dimly-lit restaurants in Los Angeles.ERRATA/OMISSIONS*The Hungarian all-child adaptation of "The Tragedy of Man" was "The Annunciation," not "Ascension."*The Rollin movie with clowns Greg meant to mention was "Requiem for a Vampire," not "Lust for a Vampire"

Pod 366, Ep. 173: Perfect Blue Audition
Kicking off with a description of the wrong product, 366-kateers Giles and Pete correct the course with fine-style rambling about Satoshi Kon's classic "Perfect Blue" (1997), now out in luscious 4K-Steelbook format. Sliding seamlessly two years into the future, Takashi Miike's breakout hit "Audition" (1999) gets the Trbodwards treatment as 366 reiterates why this is a Must See. (Plus, a bonus recommendation for "Tokyo Gore Police.")

Pod 366, Ep. 172: Matador Bolero's Jonathan Rosado (and a little smoking) (VIDEO)
On this week's show, we talk to musician-turned-filmmaker Jonathan Rosado (The Suede Hello) about his now-in-theaters Super-8 experiment "Matador Bolero." But first, we cover the week's news and new releases: an upcoming new score for "The Holy Mountain" by rock band Zen Mother; psychedelic thriller "Wetiko" reaches VOD; Danish animation "The Trouble with Terkel" shows 6th graders behaving badly (including by rapping); 1970s Soviet sci-fi mystery "Dead Mountaineer's Hotel" spoiled; Tarsem Singh's surreal serial killer procedural "The Cell" in 4K. Then, Jonathan Rosado talks "Bolero," burlesque, and bagels.Surgeon General's Warning: Smoking isn't cool and will kill you. Pod 366, Ep 171: A Moment of Silence for Yoshihiro Nishimura, the Chief of "Tokyo Gore Police" (Video)
As the episode title suggests, we start off this show by remembering recently departed Yoshihiro Nishimura, the director of "Tokyo Gore Police" and other absurdist spectacles. Then we discuss the week's happier weird movie news: you can catch "The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act" in theaters this week, "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror" and "Iron Lung" on VOD, or "Bubba Ho-Tep" and "Wizard of Oz" in 4K UHD. ERRATA*"The Amazing Digital Circus" pilot and second episode are still legally available on YouTube.

Pod 366, Ep. 170: So Many Movies We Still Can't Cover Cannes (video)
We've been meaning to cover the films coming out of Cannes, but haven't had time due to very busy weeks of new releases. This week is no exception, but we will drop three names of films we'll be discussing in more detail down the line when they get their eventual official U.S. release. As for this week's movies, we start out with notice about a special 4K theatrical screening of anime classic "Tekkonkinkreet"; A24's anticipated "The Backrooms" finally hits theaters; hallucinogenic indie "Lucid" in limited release; Bleeding Skull rediscovers lost "Carnival of Souls" cousin "House of Dreams." And a good number of Blu-ray debuts: queer oddity "Holy Trinity"; Radu Jude's unashamedly A.I.-enhanced "Dracula"; Jan Svankmajer's "Faust"; the super-weird "She Loved Blossoms More"; and dated cult classic "7 Faces of Dr. Lao."LINKS:Check GKids' website for a "Tekkonkinreet" screening near you: https://gkids.com/films/tekkonkinkreet/ERRATA AND OMISSIONS:*Greg couldn't remember the big stars of Quentin Dupieux's upcoming "Full Phil": they are Woody Harrelson and Kristen Stewart.

Pod 366, Ep. 169: Loving Boosters, Obscure Underground Films, and Re-releases (Video)
"I Love Boosters!" has finally arrived in theaters, and we'll tell you what we think about it next week. Also in theaters (well, two theaters) is something called "Matador Bolero," and we'll tell you what we think of it if we ever get to see it (despite, or perhaps because of, its obscurity there's a good chance we will). Most of the show is devoted to the many physical media releases of note: absurd fake-sequel comedy "The Napa Boys"; finally, an "A Dark Backward" Blu-ray; the Criterion Collection digs into the 90s underground for "Fresh Kill"; and "The Bride!," "Arco," "Speed Racer," and Jean Rollin's "The Demoniacs" all reach 4K UHD.

Pod 366, Ep. 168: Rex Reed (R.I.P.) Would Have Called This the Worst Podcast Ever Made (Video)
There are some really cool weird movies out this week of mid-May, led off by Alberto Vaqsuez' long awaited existential mouse animation "Decorado." In the physical media world, with the rediscovery of the legendary bad film "Scarlet Warning 666" (AKA "Scarlet Love"), alongside the seldom-seen Czech atomic-age noir "Krakatit" and a new Blu-ray release of "Mystics in Bali" with an extended cut of the film including 40 more minutes of jungle fever dreams. Also, a pair of cult films--"Fight Club" and "Motel Hell"--are now out in 4K Steelbook format for collectors. We end on a Rex Reed---well, not exactly tribute, but acknowledgement, as we read some of Reed's negative reviews of movies we love.

Pod 366, Ep. 167: Paul Bunnell and Friends Offer "A Blind Bargain" (Video)
366 talks to director Paul Bunnell and actors Jed Rowen and Claudia McLeod about the Crispin Glover-led "A Blind Bargain," a reimagining of on a lost Lon Chaney film from 1922. But first, big news on the weird movie front: Ken Russell's "The Devils" has quietly gotten a 4K restoration--with formerly excised sex/blasphemy scenes apparently restored in full! Also discussed in this episode: Iranian/Tajikistan mystical meta-movie "Black Rabbit, White Rabbit" in theaters; "Buffet Infinity," "Exit 8," and "Touch Me" all debut on VOD; and we have physical releases for weird video game fantasy "OBEX," a 4K UHD upgrade for Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," and a restoration of the Bela Lugosi classic "White Zombie."LINKS"A Blind Bargain" official site (free tickets available!) https://www.ablindbargainmovie.com/

Giles is on disciplinary probation (for the crime of trying to have a private life), but Pete has nothing going on, so he's perfectly willing to sit and talk about a busy week in weird movie releases. Coming to theaters: existential video game adaptation "Exit 8"; mermaid anime "ChaO"; surreal spaghetti western "Heads or Tails?"; and non-anime mermaid indie "Mermaid." For at-home viewing, there's "The Bride!" on VOD, and in the Blu-ray world you can choose from the Quay Brothers' "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass"; Chilean magical-realist AIDS allegory "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo": the anthology "V/H/S Halloween"; the experimental queer Japanese film "Looking for an Angel"; or Pete's pick, "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"

Pod 366, Ep. 161: Spring Has Sprung and Weird Movies Are Pollinating
Spring is in the air, and so are weird movies, leaving Greg, Giles, and Pete with lots of soon-to-bloom weird movies to preview. First up, it's three on-the-horizon projects: a Kickstarter for a new Bill Plympton music video, a piscine project from India, and a animation/documentary hybrid from the Iranian diaspora. In theaters, you can easily check out the absurd action of "They Will Kill You" at your local cineplex, although you may have to search harder for the mystical "Revelations of Divine Love." If you're in NYC you can catch the new restoration of Bruno Bozzetto's classical music animation anthology "Allegro non troppo," and even see it paired with "Fantasia" (we hope this screening presages a national tour and upcoming physical media release for this underseen classic). Finally, we cover 3 new physical media releases: animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," strange slasher "Cat Sick Blues," and Radu Jude's "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn." Spring is here, and Giles, Greg and Penguin Pete are discussing the week's new weird releases for the week of March 20. First up, we preview a couple of SWSX debuts: Boots Riley's highly anticipated shoplifting satire "I Love Boosters" and the "psychedelic odyssey into the fabric of the universe" that goes by the name "Phenomena." Then we hit the horror-satire "Touch Me" (about a mysterious man with a literally addictive touch), inform you that the Juliette-Lewis-becomes-a-chair flick "By Design" is now on VOD, and cover two physical media releases: the disappointing "Return to Silent Hill" and the 2004 Corey Feldman-led cosmic black comedy "The Birthday." Plus, Penguin ball!

Pod 366, Ep. 154: With Emergency Fill-in Co-host and Personally-Proclaimed Perv Penguin Pete (Video)
With Greg knocked out of commission this week, "Penguin" Pete fills in to discuss the week's new releases with Giles. They cover the upcoming? Japanese horror? "Mag Mag"; surprise indie sci-fi hit "Iron Lung"; and "Obex" on VOD. Then it's bonus coverage of the New Beverly's February slate of "Europe and Hollywood's Finest Adult Films," an honorary mention of today's Canonically Weird movie, and a mention of some documentary called "Melania" that we recommend not seeing. Also, our longest Errata entry ever!ERRATA AND OMISSIONS:*The "exotic locale" Greg was at was bed, and the "good fight" he was carrying on was against the flu bug.*"Iron Lung" opened last week but should be still playing in most areas.*In case you misheard, the New Beverly will be showing "Flesh Gordon," not "Flash Gordon," on February 23. *And finally, legal disclaimer: Pete should have said that the director of "Melania," Brett Ratner, was "in the Epstein files," not "on the Epstein Island list." We are aware of no evidence that Ratner visited the infamous island and believe Ratner denies it. He is mentioned many times in the Epstein files and the files include multiple pictures of him. In 2017, Ratner was accused of rape, and of sexual harassment by an additional 6 women; he denied the allegations but Warner Brothers severed ties with him. Before "Melania," he had not directed a movie since 2014. 366 Weird Movies stresses that all allegations against Ratner remain unproven; the only crime he has confessed to is directing "Melania."
