Loretta Breuning: The Science of Happiness

Loretta Breuning founded the Inner Mammal Institute with the aim of guiding people in naturally rewiring their brain chemistry. She has also penned a number of books that have brought her knowledge and expertise of the subject to the public consciousness, including the best-selling Habits of a Happy Brain.  She has been featured in numerous media outlets and online publications, such as Forbes, NPR, Fox, The Wall Street Journal, NBC, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, Inc, Men’s Health, Fast Company, and Dr. Oz.  Loretta joins me today to discuss her research and published work with regard to how brains work in animals and in human beings. She shares her insights on how society has shaped our idea of happiness, how animal behavior is reflected in human behaviour, and why it’s important to set short-term, middle-term, and long-term goals. She explains the functions and effects of neurotransmitters (dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin) on the human body, and how and why they affect our behaviour. She also shares some tips on how to control our impulses and achieve a state of happiness in our day-to-day activities.  “Many people are effectively motivated by big dreams, but the problem is often that the dream is too big, and then the person doesn’t see progress.” Loretta Breuning This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast:  What Loretta does for a living, working from her home office.  Why she decided to do extensive research and write books in the field.  The fallacy about happiness that we’re conditioned to believe.  How understanding animals can also help us understand why we make ourselves miserable.   How the animal brain reacts to stimuli in the environment, affecting the chemicals it releases into your body.  Understanding how neurotransmitters such as dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin affect our moods and bodies.  The hierarchical tendencies of animals and how that reflects in human society.  The field of ethology — the science of animal behavior.  The core thing that we need to focus on when studying human behaviour.  The endless self-criticism that is often marketed in the mindfulness world – and why Loretta isn’t a fan of it.  The capacity to anticipate consequences which sets us apart from animals.  Why it’s hard to build a new pathway in adulthood — and what it takes to successfully do that.  The need for a long-term goal, a short-term goal, and a middle-term goal.  How our unrealistic expectations lead to the dissolution of trust and the emergence of disappointment.  Taking small steps towards happiness and personal wellbeing.  Tips and ideas for people to rewire their brains and return to a happier state.  The concept of creating “self-soothers” that could cheer you up at a bad moment.  The sense of threat and how you can avoid it.  The idea of “victim olympics” and how society rewards anxiety instead of handling it the right way.  Why you should model the behaviour you want.  What Loretta does when she has a bad day, from a rational perspective.  What a day of “living more” looks like to her.  Connect with Loretta Breuning:  Inner Mammal Institute  Connect, Share, Inspire  Thank you for joining me for this week’s episode of the POWER to Live More Podcast! Linda Harris: Finding Room for Your Fulfillment

After graduating from university with a degree in business management, Linda Harris knew that she wanted to do work she felt passionate about. She had done a fair bit of travelling during her university years and ended up taking a job in travel. When COVID started, Linda found herself furloughed and eventually made redundant. Instead of seeing her unemployment as a setback, Linda took the opportunity to reevaluate her priorities, discover her strengths, and look to move into an industry that would challenge her and allow her to give back. After months of reading, reflection and fine-tuning her CV, Linda landed a job as the Head of Marketing and Communications for a children’s charity. This new opportunity has also granted her the ability to return to her home in Wales. Today Linda and I discuss her journey from travel expert to charity worker and YouTuber. She shares how the challenges of the pandemic helped guide her into a more balanced life. Linda offers some tips on creating room for the things that bring you joy while still being a productive employee or business owner. She also discusses her tendency to be an “achiever” and why being passionate about her work has helped to vitalise her personal interests. “It feels quite nice to have ticked off something that is just for me, that was not something that I had to do but something that I wanted to do.” Linda Harris This week on The Power to Live More Podcast: How Linda prioritises tasks and stays organisedWhy losing her job gave her a chance to discover her super-strengths and align them with her valuesThe importance of making space for the things that fulfill you and respecting your limitsThe joy Linda’s received from creating her YouTube channel, “Better you Books”How taking time to prepare and prioritise what she wanted led her to the right jobWhy Linda prioritised quality over quantity when it came to job huntingWhy you should pay attention to your energy and what you can actually achieve each dayLinda’s daily gratitude practice and how it has affected her perspective over the past yearHer approach to life as an “achiever” and someone always wanting to be challenged Resources Mentioned: Everything Is Figureoutable by Marie ForleoThe Pomodoro TechniqueThe Squiggly Career by Helen Tupper & Sarah EllisHelp Me! by Marianne Power Connect with Linda Harris: Better you Books on YouTubeBetter you Books on InstagramLinda Harris on LinkedIn Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Rob Catalano: Productivity, Networking, Planning, Development and Evernote

Productivity, Networking, Planning, Development and Evernote with Rob Catalano, Co-Founder of Worktango Inc Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended: Business and Marketing – Learning – Books – Entrepreneurial There’s this really great book that takes about 20 minutes to read. It’s called ‘What Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast’. It’s something that I read five or six years ago and thought it was something I wanted to add into my routine. I’m reading a book called ‘The Organized Mind’ by Daniel Levitson. It’s all about the digital onslaught now with everything being 300 miles an hour and always on. What was really interesting was that he says that having unread email in your inbox can reduce your IQ by as much as 10 points. (comment from Jo) Productivity Planning the Day Before – I review my top five from the night before. What that means is that every day after work I write a top five things I’m going to focus on doing the next day to help me prioritise, especially when there are a lot of things going on. I do review that in the morning just to make sure it aligns with what I created after work the day before and nothing has changed from then. Email Time – I do like to catch up on my emails before around 10:00 am but I don’t touch my emails for the next two hours afterwards and really focus on one or two of those important things from my top five. Planning Travel – When I’m traveling, I’ll try to book flights at 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM so I can still get caught up at the airport on the day and just start the day right. Daily Goal Setting – It’s something we started doing daily when I was working at Achievers. The way we always looked at it was there was a top three but you didn’t want to limit it to top three so there was a stretch goal of something you found you wanted to get done, that was the fourth one. The fifth one was always something from a personal development standpoint. It had nothing to do with work but it was something you personally needed to do. It’s still top three productivity at work cloaked with a fourth stretch goal and a fifth personal one. Shut off Distractions – That is why literally between 10:00 and before lunch, I do try and shut off email, shut off the distractions. I don’t put the phone on airplane mode so to speak but if someone really needs to get hold of me they can call me but it’s focused from 10-12 to try to do that top one thing. Then when something urgent does come up, you can take care of it the rest of the day and feel a bit productive that you focused on the most important thing first. WorkTango – our tool is built to help managers have more accountability on what they are doing for their organisation and for their team. I actually use WorkTango as a tool to prioritise the things I need to get done for my team to make sure that they are successful. Personal Development Learning [spp-tweet tweet=”A big one is not just learning from books but just connecting with people.”] You meet new people and you learn about new approaches and ideas and thoughts and ways that they do things. It’s a great way to learn and respect what other people do. From a learning and improvement standpoint, the ability to chat with new people is just a good opportunity. I do it whenever I can. Goal Setting – I always try to think do I have a goal on the wealth side of things, the self side of things, and the health side of things. That’s how I structure what are my future goals personally. Personal Development – Motivation Living More [spp-tweet tweet=”Am I Living More? One thing that comes to mind is, did I do something that I’ve never done before.”] What I mean by that is, have I engaged in some level of new experience that I learned something or something I can have as a memory moving forward. Yesterday actually was a great example, it was the first time I was actually on a sailboat and drove it and didn’t know what I was doing but it was a cool experience. When I do something like that, I feel I’ve kind of lived more, right? Organisation – Evernote I have one list in a tool called Evernote which I’m sure people have heard about. I have work tasks, personal tasks but outside of the top five there’s always a running list of other things that I have going on. Some might be things I want to get accomplished next week or if I have an idea and I want to do it, I write it in something I want to do someday. I kind of keep a list of personal and work stuff outside of the top five so that I don’t forget things. Wellbeing – Meditation and Mindfulness Headspace – They actually have this little thing in there called SOS. Literally, it’s this quick, three-minute kind of ‘just stop’. There have been times where I have been super stressed and not sure how to move forward on something and I have used the head space SOS tool. Just again, three minutes of just stopping, coming up for air goes a long way in terms of trying to fix some things that don’t go right. Wellbeing – Stress I think health is not only the physical part of it but just kind of this state of mind. What I try and do is I really try and be in my days. It’s really easy to get bogged down in a lot of different things and tasks and to lose a day or a week. Sometimes I really try and just focus. Thursdays would most exclusively be about our product or Mondays are on marketing or Fridays are more about writing because I do a lot of columns and blogs. I think healthy isn’t just your physical state but also mentally as well. How do you keep yourself on track? To Contact Rob People can reach out to me anytime. Rob Catalano is the Twitter handle that I have. Obviously, that’s my name on LinkedIn. [email protected] is my email address and you can reach me there. If you went to the worktango.io website, you can email the company and it’ll get routed to me at some point. From my end, I love connecting with different people and learning how they do things and, if some other productivity hack has worked for you I’d love to hear about it. It’s just great to connect with people. Faye Watts: Habits, Goal Setting, Self Care, Weight Lifting, Singing and Mindfulness

Habits, Goal Setting, Self Care, Weight Lifting, Singing and Mindfulness with Faye Watts of FUSE Accountants LLP. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Salesforce, a CRM and Sales Platform – “In the office we use a thing called Salesforce, which is an on-line platform. All of our software is on-line based, web based, so that we can have access anywhere. That means that it gives me and the rest of the staff the opportunity to work from home or elsewhere at any time with instant access.” Rightmove – for inspiration “is my other favourite app because that gives me the inspiration. I love property and I love architecture and it just gives me the inspiration to want to achieve more and get a bigger house. It helps me focus … It’s almost like looking at my dream houses and that helps wire me and gets me working towards goals.” Books More Balls Than Most by Lara Morgan Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg Music Country Music – “For me, I’d rather turn the music up loud in my downtime. I like country music so I turn that up as loud as I can and just get into my zone.” Tips Really important to stick to a routine “Well, I have to stick to a routine because I’m rubbish otherwise. If I don’t, I don’t keep my day on track. I schedule everything I do. I have a routine in the mornings, I catch up on emails. Then, I always make sure before lunch I work on one job to get it out the door. That might be a client’s tax return, some accounting, some advice, whatever that might be.” Schedule telephone calls including with clients – “I tend to schedule phone calls with clients for half an hour, an hour, if I know that they want to discuss something in detail rather than get into the habit of allowing phone calls to interrupt the day and then you lose momentum.” Minimise distractions, especially when working at home – “I don’t like distractions in terms of when I’m at work. I think when you’re working it’s important not to use the time to put washing on in between or decide to do an hour of ironing. I think it’s key that when you’re working you’re working, no matter what environment you’re in, that you still have dedicated time slots.” Being clear about what’s work and what isn’t and how to switch between the two – “When I go home I go home. That’s it. Time out. I have a personal trainer that I train with twice a week and I do that within working hours. I have a 9am on a Friday morning and a 5pm on a Monday evening. The point of that is they’re in working hours because they really are a disciplined time of my day. They’re an appointment that I can’t reschedule so that my evening time is my evening time. I have a very clear line between what is work and what is life.” Planning and goal setting is essential – “I diarise everything wherever I can and I’ve got to-do lists in every part of my life. I’ve got to-do lists personally. I even have a list of all the restaurants I want to go to, and all the things I want to do, and the countries I want to go to, and the hotel I want to stay in. Also, from a daily point of view, I break my task list down into today’s to-do list and maybe this month’s or this year’s so I have clear goals. Though using the word ‘to-do list’ I think is a little bit harsh and it can be a bit draining. You think, “I’ve got to do that.” Whereas, perhaps having a year’s goal list or a goal plan or having today’s priorities, try and avoid the to-do list because I think that’s really onerous.” Self Care is key to business success – “ I looked at my health, my diet, my weight, managed to lose some weight, and really focused this year on mindfulness and stepping back from work and saying, ‘Okay, my health is just as important as my work because it effectively has a knock on effect on what I do and how I work.’ My job’s very taxing, for want of a better cliché.” Eating healthily is really important and it’s about working out what works for you – “Mentally, I used to suffer with a lot of brain fog and confusion if my diet was poor. I found that if I changed my way of eating, and my patterns of eating, my diet, and my whole exercise routine, that I managed to eliminate the negatives of that. I’m a bit of a low carb girl, a bit of a high protein and veg. I know what works for me. I know what doesn’t work for me and my weakness right now is coffee gelato. Then, I’m in real trouble. Work on improving your habits – “You lose habits really quickly if you have the right mindset. It’s just forming habits. I think you just have to be really conscious of habits that you’ve formed and the ones that make you feel positive and the ones that make you feel negative. It’s strange to me to have such discipline, but it’s discipline that forms a habit and then once you’ve got the habit it just becomes part of your life.” Comment from Jo “I was reading something the other day. I think it’s from the book, “The One Thing.” It was talking about how habits are formed through little pockets of self-discipline. People think that successful people are really disciplined 24/7 sort of thing. It was making the point that that isn’t necessarily the case. It’s just about having enough discipline to do that one thing and to do that one thing on a regular basis to the point it then becomes a habit. Then, you don’t need the self-discipline because you just do it. Then, you use that discipline for something else, which I thought was really interesting.” Doing meditative things for mindfulness Faye is improving her weight dead lifting “it’s also really amazing on your mind because you cannot think of anything else. You’re in the zone where you’re just pushing your body to its limit. Even though it’s not physically relaxing, it’s mentally relaxing because your brain can’t think about anything else and you just switch off”. And Faye also sings “There’s a lot of focus, and you’re thinking about the words, you’re thinking about the sounds, you’re thinking about the vowels, and everything when you’re singing. Again, there’s no place to think of anything else. Also, it’s so deeply relaxing and enjoyable if you make a nice sound.” I want to learn anything new. I like the idea of stretching my brain, not in terms of more education, but more knowledge and power and more … I think it helps you improve strength of character and your own emotional intelligence. That’s probably more important. Turning your phone off – “when I do get home the phone goes upside down on the hall room table. I mean, I check it occasionally because my work and my personal phone are the same. I couldn’t deal with two phones. I do just come and look at it, but I won’t look at my emails because my emails will only ever be work related, but I’ll check my texts or whatever.” Pets – “I’ve also got a kitten so I love to come home to my little kitten. He gives me a lot of pleasure.” “I have certain rules. I won’t put my mobile phone on charge in my bedroom and I don’t have a TV in my bedroom because I think the bedroom and sleeping is … It’s for two things, the bedroom. We’ll leave it at that. I like that to be a zen. It’s a very, very neutral zen.” Websites Pinterest – “I love Pinterest. It’s my obsession actually because I create a mood board and all the things that inspire me. Actually, I learn from that as well. Visually I’m learning things. I think everything you learn from if you just open your mind to it.” To Contact Faye Twitter @taxandtea FUSE Accountants FayeWatts.com LinkedIn The post Faye Watts: Habits, Goal Setting, Self Care, Weight Lifting, Singing and Mindfulness first appeared on POWER to Live More.

Darren Bandoo: Blinkist, My Fitness Pal, Trello, Pocket, reading, productivity and learning

Blinkist, My Fitness Pal, Trello, Pocket, reading, productivity and learning with Darren Bandoo, Personal Performance Coach, Photographer, blogger, volunteer board member for the International Special Events Society and Business Development Executive for PRG XL Video. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps MotionX – “I actually use this app called MotionX. It’s a bit of a sleep app. It’s got this wind down where you will put it on and it will sort of play ocean sounds and you can just lie there. It’s a bit like a head space, mindfulness strategy just to stop or to slow down, and that sort of drifts me off. Blinkist –  précises of books to read and listen to. “You’re familiar with the app Blinkist as well. I know we’ve talked about that in the past, and sometimes listening to a book where your eyes aren’t active. It’s just you can just close your eyes and just listen to something and let the information settle in, and that sometimes drifts me off as well.” MyFitnessPal – “That’s something I use more. It gave me a good understanding of what I was eating because you can scan barcodes. I’m quite a healthy guy. I’m not overweight or anything, but I had no idea how or what concept a calorie was. Never counted them ever, and I thought, “Okay. Well, I’m trying to put weight on.” I’m in a body building phase. I’m not going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I had to get a grip of good calories, bad calories, and that’s what led me onto the whole nutrition path as well. It gives you a better idea and fact about what is actually happening here.” Lightroom – “I use Lightroom now for my photography Final Cut – “for any editing” Logic Pro – “for audio” Trello – “is my to-do list. I’m very visual, so I find I like moving things from left to right once they get done. It’s great for that. It’s great for just sliding things across without too much effort. Trello I use as a task board, but also the ideas board. I’ve got boards for Aroha in terms of client management and things we’ve done which I share with my business partner. Then I have one for Drgnfly360.” Evernote – “I’m a big fan of Evernote. It’s sort of my brain outside of my head as I’ve heard it referred to once and I refer to it myself. I do all my thinking and capture all my ideas and notes that relate to anything that I’m dealing with in any of my projects. I love the search facility within Evernote and the [filing 00:20:48], so we use that a lot for any content. We draft up contracts, agreements, ideas up, our processes sometimes are even labelled out there. That then gives us a resource because I can share that folder. I’m a premium user so I’ve got a lot more capabilities. Then I share that folder again with my business partner. I even share a folder with my wife which we call our home folder, so all the shopping lists get created in there, and we take snapshots of our bills. It’s a nice one stop shop where you can go search things out and go from there. My top two would be that first one, compartmentalising by having a notebook, then breaking your life into categories that you want to work on, contexts as they’re called. The second is studying. Every time I’m learning something I’ll start a notebook, and for every chapter topic within there I have a note, and the great thing I lucky about Evernote is you can then turn all of those notes into a table of contents at the top. You go into there and it creates these hyperlinks, so you just read through, boom, and then go straight to that notebook. It’s got a lot, a lot of features that I love and use daily. Jo said “When I am in a meeting I love the fact that I can take notes straight into Evernote which means I never have to write them up again, and I can find them again, and I can even create checklists and to-do lists from them without having to use anything else, and just thinking back a long time since I’ve not used it, but to writing handwritten meeting notes and then looking at them day in, day out in my in-tray while I kept telling myself I needed to type them up but never got round to it. I don’t need to anymore.” Pocket – “It’s my favourite reader, and the one thing I love about it is that the articles are available offline, so if you send anything to it say from Feedly, you can actually have a good read offline, underground. We’re always underground on a train or anything like that. It’s all there and you can then forward it to any of the other apps that you want for storage like Evernote. That’s one of my favourites that I’m using at the moment.” Other Resources MacProVideo – “I have access to a website called macProVideo, and that basically gives you tutorials on every bit of software that’s out there in the world. It’s like Lynda.com. You might have heard of that.” Music “I’m a very big fan of Motown, soul, anything all the way up to the high BPMs of the electronic dance music today like jungle and drum and bass, but what I really like is it’s definitely got to be the Motown. I’ve got a record collection. I don’t know. People don’t use those anymore, but I’ve got a vast, a vast record collection sitting right behind me, and I like to pull them out and just dust off anything from Earth, Wind, and Fire. Don’t laugh. Films “I love a good movie. I like my horrors. I like edgy things like some of Guy Ritchie’s films or Quentin Tarantino. I like the edgy. [inaudible 00:30:11] with people that take the intros very seriously with the artwork and that really … That’s my creative edge.” Tips “I’m a big fan of lemon tea in the mornings to sort of kick start my digestive system before I eat.” “Getting up that early sort of gives me that time to look at my day, see what I’ve got to do, and then get mentally prepared for it” “I like to just stick with one topic so that I will make a lot of progress in one evening, whether I’m writing articles for the blog or touching photos up and doing the albums. I like to do a bulk load of work and then I’m happy with where that project is, and I find that I move a lot faster that way rather than spending an hour then shifting topics.” “As you can imagine task management is crucial here, and I like to organise my days so the middle of the week, so Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday I call project nights, so Monday and Friday is just relax, get into the week and spend some time with my wife in the evenings. Tuesday through to Thursday are project nights, so I pick a day to focus on each of those projects just so that I know I’ve got that time to do that. It keeps me on top of everything.” “One of my early revelations was I just want to be happy, and it’s not a destination, it’s the journey, so one day I just started thinking about, “Okay. Well … ” I was in a bad place and a bit of a turbulent childhood. I thought, “This is it. I’m just going to be happy.” The next morning, woke up. Made myself the best cup of tea. It just starts from the simple things. You know?” “Healthy mind, healthy body, and if you’re not making time for health, you’re making time for sickness. Isn’t that right?” “On the whole sort of nutrition tip I steer away from white rice, white pasta, white breads. I’ve learned a bit more about gluten free and I’m trying to incorporate that in terms of prevention of later degenerative effects.” “It’s about like having a 360 look at your world, your situation, and quantifying how satisfied you are with various areas, whether it’s health, work, your hobbies, your relationships, et cetera. I actually have a quantified system where it gives you a number at the end of it and then you can work on your lowest satisfaction rating. I urge your readers have a look at it. It’s on my website and any questions I can always answer them. I’m more than happy to do that.” “To relax. The reading does take me down. I like to surf around on the net a lot in terms of travel. My wife and I we just recently qualified as scuba divers, so I’m constantly on the net trying to find good locations to dive. I’m definitely a warm water fan though. I can’t stand the cold water.” “Because of obviously the progresses that I’ve made now from my early days of being a milk runner. It was my first ever job was running milk to people’s doors and collecting the tokens. When things don’t go right for me I always just think of the progress that I’ve made, and progress. I remind people if they’re in the same position about the progresses they’ve made, and things could always be worse, Jo. They can always be worse.” “The trick is how you take it on board, what you learn from it, and how then are you going to turn this into a success. Again, everything is always a work in progress, but without your failures you don’t learn the greatest lessons, and winning isn’t as good if you don’t fail.” To Contact Darren “First step if you haven’t, check out my website, Drgnfly360. That’s dragon without the vowels, so just D-R-G-N-F-L-Y 360.com, and interact with me through there. We’ve got a comments page. My email is also [email protected]. Roy Carter: Page to View Diary, ValueAddon, Living your Dream and a Whiteboard!

Page to View Diary, ValueAddon, Living your Dream and a Whiteboard with Roy Carter of IM Income Builders Club. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Page a Day Diary – “I’ve been in corporate life and all the rest of it, in the long, distance past now, but I’ve never really found a better way of organising myself than the good old-fashioned page-a-day diary that I use. What I’ll usually do is I’ll have like three main, what I call PFA tasks, so I call them prime focus activity tasks, that I want to get done as a priority each day. They’re prime focus activities because they bring money in, so they get done first. As long as I get those, usually three main PFA tasks done in a day, I’m happy. Whiteboard – “I’ve got a whiteboard in front of me as I speak now, I’m looking at that on the wall. I know at any given time what the income is for the month, the number of members this month compared to last month of my main IM Income Builders Club. I have other membership programmes as well. It’s all in front of me at a glance.“ AWeber and GetResponse “I use them to send out emails, and broadcast emails, and sequential emails that go out with lessons for my membership programmes, things like that. I rely heavily on that, and that’s magic. I just think they’re a major part of my business, the autoresponders.” ValueAddOn – “The membership tool that I’ve just starting using, which I run my main membership programme IM Income Builders Club from. It’s all run from this one tool, which is an online. It’s so simple and easy to use. Intuitive to use right from the get go, which is good for me because I’m a complete technophobe. It does everything I want it do. I have video lessons in there for my members, because most of my training’s done by videos, step-by-step videos. All the videos are hosted in there by them too, so I don’t have worry about hosting. It’s a brilliant tool if you want to run your own membership programme. It’s really way too inexpensive for what it does. I think it’s about $37 a month or something ridiculous like that. It’s quite incredible. I mean, it does everything I need it to do, and it’s making me an awful lot of money in terms of my membership programme.” Dropbox – “Then I’d have to say probably Dropbox where I can save everything, you know, all my work and files. I access that anywhere I happen to be in the world.” Books “Well, obviously everyone obviously has to read a book called, ‘Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life?’ Yeah, that’s a great book, it’s called, ‘Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life?’ It’s a really good book. It’s available on Amazon. It’s by a really clever and a very hugely handsome guy called Roy Carter!!” “I tend to like books by entrepreneurs who kind of think outside the square a bit. One of the very first books that I remember reading when I was younger, of that type, of somebody who really thinks outside the square, was a book called, ‘The Lazy Man’s Way To Riches’. It’s by a guy called, Joe Karbo. Obviously the title is ‘The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches’ or whatever, but it’s much more than that. He tells how, during the Great Depression in America, he made a lot of money in a lot of quite ingenious ways. Even during that Great Depression time, when everyone was suffering.” “As for probably the best book I’ve ever read, fairly recently actually, probably only a few months ago, it was recommended to me by my mentor, and the book is called, ‘Straightline Leadership’. and it’s by a guy called Dusan Djukich and it honestly is superb. I read it in one sitting, I couldn’t actually put it down. It was an absolute epiphany to me. I actually now recommend every consulting client that comes on with me, I recommend that they read that book, because it’s such an eye opener. Yeah, without a doubt, it’s the best book I’ve ever read. It’s not just about leadership. If you think about leadership, it’s also about leading yourself rather than leading others, or as well as leading others. It simplifies things down when you really look at it, because it gets yourself to ask yourself questions about your own business. For example, you know, it’s so simple, like he does a 4 step thing where he says, “Okay looking at your business, so what you’re really looking at is what’s working. What’s not working. What’s missing and what’s next.” You know, that’s just a simple example of how he breaks things down in one respect. Then he’ll say things like, “Okay a decision about this particular activity – do you do it, do you drop it or do you delegate it?” When you look at the book, I’m going to read it again and again, because it was just a bit of an epiphany for me. I’m big on simplifying things for other people, and trying to make things easy for my consulting clients and members, and everything else like that. I like to keep things simple. This book, when you read it, Straightline Leadership, it just opened my eyes, to think about things in a different way. I would recommend anyone who runs their own business or feels that they’re an entrepreneur in any way, get that book and read it, because I think you’ll be glad you did.” Music “I’ve got a really varied taste in music. I like people like Jason Mraz, pretty much anything by Jason Mraz. He’s great. “Diana Krall, I don’t know if you’re familiar with Diana Krall? She’s amazing. I just love her stuff. It’s so smoky and jazzy and relaxed. She’s really great.” Films “The Shawshank Redemption would probably be one of my favourites. You know, that’s ages old now, but a classic I think.” “I’m a bit of a romantic so, Clint Eastwood did one called, ‘The Bridges of Madison County’, which is a real great, sort of weepy thing, you know, showing my romantic side.”  Tips Planning the Day Before – “Before I stop work, or in the afternoon or whenever it is, I’ll actually note down in the diary the things that I want to get done the following day. It’s classic time management stuff really. You don’t wake up in the morning and think, “Okay well what am I going to do today?” and waste the first hour wondering what you’re going to do, it’s already there and laid out for you.” Three Monthly Planning – “I don’t look much more than about three months ahead because I think a lot can happen in three months and things can change a lot, you know. I’ll say, “Okay, this is where I want to be in three months’ time. This is where I want to be in a month’s time.” Generally, what I tend to do is I’m working month to month, so I know what I want to achieve this month Fishing to Relax – “I find that when I’m fishing I can just empty my head of anything really. Everything else just goes and I’m completely sort of in the moment and at peace when I’m fishing.” Learning and Personal Development – “I spend a lot of money on different programmes just to keep abreast of what people are doing in the marketing online industry. I spend a lot of money on that just keep myself up with most things, but really, I’ll usually be working with a mentor. Very expensive in one sense, I mean, I’ve worked with a couple of mentors, two or three mentors, and they’re extremely good and at the top of their profession at what they do. It’s not cheap, it’s very expensive in one sense to be with them and learn from them, but unbelievably inexpensive really, when you look at what you learn and how you that can contribute vastly to your bottom line and your profits. From my mentors alone, I know that I’ve learnt a lot from my mentors. I’ve very nearly been about to make a major maybe and they’ve said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t do that. Do it this way”. Just that one like thirty-minute conversation has changed the entire bottom line for me over the next God knows how many months.” When Things Go Wrong – “I think the older you get, you put things in perspective a little bit better. For me, now when things don’t go right, and that happens you know, the fact is, I always think, well tomorrow’s another day. Life is always full of highs and lows really, as we know, as everyone knows. Sometimes, if it isn’t going right, I’ll usually step completely away from it, and I’ll just go for a walk or I’ll take myself off fishing, take the day off. Sometimes I’ll just say to Lin, “Do you know what? Blow this, let’s go get some lunch somewhere and forget the day.” That’s what we’ll do. Then what I’ll then is, I’ll come back to the problem with a completely fresh mind. That’s the way I handle it.” Dealing with Problems – One piece of advice I have given to my mentoring clients and consulting clients is, when you’ve got a problem, it doesn’t matter whether it’s health or financial worries or someone you love or care for, whatever it is, the one thing I will say is, that you will always, always start to feel better about things the minute that you start to take action, some form of action and doing something about the problem. The moment you start doing something to actually take action and resolve the problem, however little that action might be, you’re doing something.” Living your Dreams – “A client said to me recently, “Oh I’d love to live on an island.” I said, “Look, it’s not as difficult to live on a tropical island as you think it is. What you have to do is, just decide that that’s what you’re going to do and go ahead and make it happen”. It’s not as difficult as people think. Helping Clients – “I call it, shining the light on their pathway to success, kind of thing. What you are, is you’re really just a cog in the wheel that shows them the right way really.” To Contact Roy “I write a monthly newsletter, which is a subscription newsletter. The newsletter is called, ‘Letters from A Small Island’. It’s a monthly newsletter that gets delivered to your inbox in pdf format. If you go to https://www.lettersfromasmallisland.com. Mary Hyatt is a life and business mindset coach who is passionate about helping high achieving female entrepreneurs move from living a life of burnout back to their enoughness, wholeness, and femininity. She coaches successful women who feel they are missing something in their life. She also runs group and one to one coaching programmes as well as shares her knowledge and experience on the Living Fully Alive podcast, where she helps her listeners learn to embody a life fully lived. As a trained Hypnotherapist and Kundalini Yoga Instructor in Nashville, Tennessee, Mary is committed to bringing a level of consciousness and soul focused inner work to everything she does. Mary joins me today to discuss her belief in the power of mindset, why she spent so much time delving into the research around women in the workplace, and how it helped her to understand her own misgivings and be more open to using her feminine soft skills professionally. She shares how she found her path in life after being coached in her own business and why she pivoted to become a life and business mindset coach. Mary also discusses how being in quarantine due to COVID-19 has given many people space to reflect on how their life looks and think about making changes when they see a better way of doing things. “When we are operating solely out of our masculine energy as women, we can’t sustain it.” Mary Hyatt This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: How to get out of the hustle and get into your flowWhy you should be approaching your business from a feminine perspectiveWhat prompted Mary to embark on her voyage of self-discoveryHow she works with her clients and creates her programmesWhy she focuses on guiding women in ‘how to be enough’How she finds time to fit everything inThe value of repurposing contentWhy she batches her daysWhy you don’t have to be like a man to be successfulWhat a woman in her power looks like to MaryHow to find feminine alignment and connect with your purposeWhy it is critical to create boundaries and find time for self-careWhat Mary does when it all goes wrongThe tools and apps Mary uses in her coaching business Resources Mentioned: CalendlyEvernoteCanvaWavveBulletproof Mind Connect with Mary Hyatt: Mary Hyatt WebsiteMary Hyatt InstagramLiving Fully Alive Podcast Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Paul & Emily: Helping Parents Help Teens Prepare for Exams

Paul and Emily Hughes have both made the leap from public sector teaching into entrepreneurship and now run the Parent Guide to GCSE, a website where they support parents whose children are in Year 11 and are preparing to take their first set of important exams. They met in 2003 as trainee teachers assigned to the same school after completing their Master’s studies in Information Management and Computing, and Maths and Education, respectively. They enjoy working from separate rooms at home and relish the freedom that their business has given them. Emily also runs a Pop Choir in her spare time and loves the opportunity that it gives her to connect with other like-minded people. Paul and Emily join me today to discuss their membership website for parents who want to help their children prepare successfully for their GCSE exams and how they were inspired by a parent chat on WhatsApp to start their business. Emily discusses her love of reading and researching and how she used this ‘superpower’ to plan the website that shares their professional knowledge with parents who are struggling to understand how to help their children get exam-ready in a way that also supports their mental health. Paul and Emily also dive into how they manage their days now that they are working on their own business and no longer have the day timetabled by the school bell, and why they make time for prioritising their family with regular ‘Fri-dates.’ “A lot of the stress of exams is caused by not feeling in control.” Emily Hughes This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: Why Paul and Emily began to feel that teaching was no longer a long-term option for themOther business ventures that paved the way for The Parent Guide to GCSE websiteThe similarities and differences between education and entrepreneurshipHow Paul and Emily plan and organise their tasks to work together successfullyHow they brainstorm the future of their business and the areas in which they plan to expand their conceptHints and tips on how to talk about exams and revision with your teenage childrenWhy it’s vital to support mental health and promote wellness strategiesThe importance of prioritisingWhy they outsource some of their business tasks to a VAHow they deal with situations that don’t go their way and challenging daysWhat their day looks like when they’re ‘living more,’ and how they prioritise family-time Resources Mentioned: Oversubscribed: How to Get People Lining Up to Do Business with You by Daniel PriestleyCopywriting for Creatives CourseFree to Focus by Michael HyattThe 1% Club with John LamertonBig Ideas for Small Businesses by John LamertonMy World Domination Plans by John Lamerton Connect with Paul and Emily Hughes: The Parent Guide to GCSEsThe Parent’s Guide to GCSEs on FacebookThe Parent’s Guide to GCSEs on TwitterEmily Hughes on LinkedIn Paul Hughes on LinkedInNEW BOOK GCSE Survival Guide for Parents Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Dr Allen Lycka: Choosing Joy After Trauma

Dr. Allen Lycka was a leading cosmetic doctor for over 40 years, pioneering many modern cosmetic procedures that have become so routine today. His passion for his practice was apparent in the holistic approach he took to his patients and the many accolades he received throughout his career. In 2003, everything changed when he began experiencing drop foot. After numerous doctors and tests, he was diagnosed with ALS and told to get his affairs in order. Dr. Lycka, however, was not convinced. With his health declining, he continued to run his practice while trying to find answers for his mysterious ailment. He finally found a doctor who was able to confirm his suspicion – that he had been misdiagnosed. He is currently being treated for long-term Lyme disease and has turned his experience into a way to give back. He has written several books and now spends his time as a transformational speaker and coach. Today, Dr. Lycka shares his experience of going through the five stages of grief after his ALS misdiagnosis. We discuss the transformative power of choosing happiness and how living enthusiastically can impact your place in the world. He shares his experience as a top cosmetic surgeon and why he felt that his role went beyond changing his patients’ aesthetics. He offers some advice for allowing our grief to become gratitude and why it can be a powerful blessing. He also shares some of the “Golden Pearls” that he writes about in his book, The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life. “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens.” Dr. Allen Lycka This week on The Power to Live More Podcast: How his illness changed his perspective and inspired him to give backThe “Golden Pearls” that help us survive personal traumas and setbacksWhy 2020 can be seen as a blessing if we choose to prioritise our non-negotiablesWhy moving from his role as a top cosmetic surgeon to an inspirational speaker and author felt like a natural transitionThe importance of consciously creating gratitude for the things and people who are important to youHow being a cosmetic doctor was about more than changing physical appearancesThe power of choosing happiness and paying it forward every dayHow he transformed his grief into joy and thankfulness Resources Mentioned: On Grief and Grieving by Elisabeth Kübler-RossPsycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz   Connect with Dr. Allen Lycka: Dr. Allen Lycka Website Book: The Secrets to Living a Fantastic LifeDr. Allen Lycka on LinkedIn Dr. Allen Lycka on Instagram Dr. Allen Lycka on Facebook Dr. Allen Lycka on Twitter Dr. Allen Lycka on YouTube  Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Managing Your Emails to Avoid Overwhelm

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you open your email inbox? Whether it’s your personal email or business account, it can be easy to begin feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of email you receive every single day! Email has helped businesses grow much faster today than in the pre-internet days. It has helped keep people connected – for work and play – in a much easier way. It has even helped improve productivity for businesses, but if you’re not managing your email properly, it can quickly begin to feel more like a ‘time-suck’ than a productivity and communications tool. Today, I want to share with you some of the tips, strategies, and tools that I use every day to help me manage my email and get more done so I can live more. “I have always worked on the ‘inbox zero’ philosophy.” Inbox Zero Strategy to Help You Live More: Consolidate all your emails into one. Use rules, filters, folders, and labels. Read and respond to emails that require your immediate response. Sort the rest. Check email at specific times of the day. Be free with the delete key and forward reference materials to an external programme (like Evernote!) Create templates for frequently asked questions – or create a FAQs page on your website. Keep your responses short and sweet. Ronan Leonard: Staying Grounded and Centred with your Why

Originally from the United Kingdom, Ronan Leonard is the founder of Eccountability, a mastermind platform where entrepreneurs can get the support they need as they navigate the ups and downs of the business. Since he loves watching and helping people succeed, he connects business owners to their “tribe” so they can learn from others while also having the necessary accountability they need to thrive. Being part of this community is especially helpful for those who don’t have a co-founder, mentor, or business coach. Ronan joins me today to share how to stay grounded and centred as you define and remember your “why.” He emphasises the significance of knowing and understanding your purpose as well as how this knowledge allows you to keep going. He also shares how he prevents decision fatigue, how habits and rituals help you achieve your goals, and how a gratitude list gives him the power to live more each day. “When you go back to your “why “ and really have a strong motivation to do something, all those excuses tend to fade away.” – Ronan Leonard This Week on the POWER to Live More Podcast: What most professionals strive for these days regarding their place of work How he discovered his “why” Why he made the change to be location independent How he gave his brain some breathing space What you imply when you say “I don’t have time” How visual reminders help him manage his time and tasks Tools and apps he uses to get things done Why he’s planning on hiring a virtual assistant (VA) A great way to get processes done How he makes sure he’s healthy enough to do the things he needs to do Why he does the hard and most important things first Resources Mentioned: Audio books Tim Ferriss Books The Five Minute Journal Boomerang Gmail RescueTime Unique Ability Book by Catherine Nomura Power Nap Psycho-Cybernetics Book by Maxwell Maltz The Dot System Connect with Ronan Leonard: Eccountability Website Eccountability on Facebook Eccountability on Twitter Ronan Leonard on LinkedIn Connect, Share, Inspire Thank you for joining me for this week’s episode of the POWER to Live More Podcast! Alexis Kingsbury: Miracle Morning, Time Blocking and Think and Grow Rich

Miracle Morning, Time Blocking and Think and Grow Rich with Alexis Kingsbury, serial entrepreneur and business consultant. Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended: Tools & Apps iThoughts app – a mind mapping application. “It’s probably the best app and most powerful app that I use, and it’s the one I’m asked about most often when I’m at conferences because I take all my notes into iThoughts.” My Fitness Pal app – fitness and food app for tracking data like meals, calories and exercise. WordPress app – for blogging straight into a blog from a phone or tablet. Intercom – a customer communication platform. “I have an application called ‘Intercom’, which is used by my software business for one of our support tech teams, so I can keep an eye on what conversations people are having.” Buffer – for scheduling tweets. Other Resources People that Alexis admires – Richard Branson, Robert Kiyosaki from Rich Dad, Poor Dad Books Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod – essentially sets out six activities for you to do every morning. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Live It by Jairek Robbins – Alexis says “in the book it says to identify your perfect day, because the more you bring that to life in your head, the closer you’ll get to actually achieving it in your life”. How Will You Measure Your Life? – Clayton M. Christensen – one of the things he highlights is that he went to a very reputable university, and as he went to the reunions he saw that initially people were extremely successful. After about the fourth decade of reunions or whatever, suddenly some of them are on their own and lost their relationships, some are in prison, and some have lost it all, some have committed suicide, and so on. He just reflects on the fact that intelligence doesn’t prevent that. The problem is that we tend to get the goals wrong and we tend to prioritise a particular thing, so at the end of the rainbow, then the dreams will come true. I think actually you have to start living the dream now. Tips Eat that Frog – Brian Tracy ie doing the worst thing you need to get done on a day in the morning so that it’s out of the way. “I’ve got it as part of my visioning in the morning that I make sure that I have gone to bed before eleven.” From Think and Grow Rich – “invent a council of people who you would almost like as coaches, alive or dead, that you know enough, perhaps by reading their autobiographies or knowing them through basically whatever, that you can almost give yourself advice through their lens.” “What could I meaningfully do today/this week/this month to achieve that?” Using this question on a short and long term basis to ensure that work is meaningful and taking you to wherever you plan to be, rather than just ‘being busy’. Relative prioritisation is really important; what is most important at any given time. Time blocking on your calendar to achieve tasks and reach goals Planning and ensuring that the right stuff gets done so that there is no ‘guilt’ of not achieving what needs to be done. Exercise “baking it into my life. It’s not trying to have it as this crazy add on and decide, “Oh, I’m going to run in the mornings even though I don’t want to. I’m going to go to the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but then feel fed up that I’m not seeing my family. Instead, it’s built into my life that it’s just part of it now.” “If I realise I’ve had a really inefficient day, I’ve not eaten that frog, I’ve not done the exercise or whatever, if I catch it I will talk to myself out loud. I think it’s like a pattern break, which I believe comes from the world of NLP, and Derren Brown, and so on. ‘Alexis, you haven’t done anything productive this morning…’.” To Contact Alexis Alexis’ Twitter Making Greatness Blog Email: [email protected] The post Alexis Kingsbury: Miracle Morning, Time Blocking and Think and Grow Rich first appeared on POWER to Live More.

Simon Jordan: Google Calendar, Timetrade, and Inspirational Tips

The late Simon Jordan was a coach, mentor, branding, and design consultant and founder of Simon Jordan Marketing. He worked with coaches and consultants internationally to help them to build profitable and powerful brands that make a difference in the world. We lost Simon just before Christmas 2021. It was a shock as he was always so lively and full of energy. About ten years ago Simon lived with us for a few weeks between houses. We were close and I miss him loads. It was lovely to hear his voice again though when I listened back. This is the first show I did with him; there was another closer to his death that you can listen to here. Google Calendar, Timetrade, Pinterest and Inspirational Tips from Simon Jordan of SimonJordan.com Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Simon uses his Get More Done Today system to stay organised and get stuff done. It’s a day planner, with the planning completed the night before, free to download. Google Calendar – for diary scheduling and planning Google Translate – as he lives in France and is learning the language! TimeTrade – to allow people to schedule calls and meetings automatically into his diary Simon uses his iPhone extensively to run his business – even from the side of the lake! Pinterest – to search for inspiration or motivation to find ideas and people to connect with Tips Charity – Silver Line – Simon regularly volunteers through this charity, speaking with lonely people Simon tries to exercise most mornings, outside. “Gets the blood pumping and it’s my time” He recommends no tech for the last hour before bed Simon eats a good quality clean diet and is vegan “I only work four days a week now, every Wednesday is family time because the kids’ school is closed on a Wednesday. April and I down tools and we spend the day. It’s good, because you’re still more productive. You’re just as productive on the other days, in fact you’re probably more productive because you know you’ve only got four days, so it’s good. When I started using this system, I think I got more done in three hours focused work than I did in two days. It’s phenomenal how much time you waste, especially on social media. When it’s all ‘going wrong’ “I have to think, in a day’s time, a week’s time, will it really matter? No, not really. What can you do? If you can’t fix it right now, don’t give it too much energy”. “Gratitude is the language of the truly rich. When you come from that place, energy flows.” “I only check my emails at 10 o’clock in the morning and at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.” Time blocking is key in managing Simon’s diary, scheduling blocks of time in for the week in advance, like for coaching or other projects “I love the line that Jim Rohn wrote, don’t wish it was easier, wish that you were better’. “I love the line, true success is knowing that someone else has breathed more easily because you’ve been there.”  To Contact Simon Jordan SimonJordan.com Simon’s Twitter Simon’s Facebook Simon’s Instagram One Planet One Place One Planet One Place on Facebook The post Simon Jordan: Google Calendar, Timetrade, and Inspirational Tips first appeared on POWER to Live More.

    Madeleine Black: Broken and Unbroken

In March 2018, Madeleine Black won the Amazing Strength award at the No. 1 Magazine Amazing Women Awards and, in October of the same year, was asked to be the Patron for Say Women, the Scottish organisation that supports survivors of sexual abuse. She is a TEDx speaker, a storyteller for The Forgiveness Project, and has recently become involved with their programme RESTORE, sharing her story in prisons. Madeleine recognises that she was a victim of a crime that left her silent for many years but has now found her voice and intends to use it, not just for her, but for so many who can’t find theirs yet. Madeleine joins me today to discuss why she eventually decided to share her story of sexual violence publicly and let go of what she saw as her shame. She explains how she uses her experience to help others and how her memoir, Unbroken, and her talks can help others realise that it isn’t healthy to hide or fight trauma. Dayne Shuda: The Spirit of Ghost Blogging

Dayne Shuda may have established Ghost Blog Writers, but there’s nothing spooky or paranormal about what he does. Since 2010, he has provided quality blogging services to businesses and entrepreneurs across all industries. Despite his hectic schedule, he still finds time for the things he cherishes: enriching his mind with books, exploring the great outdoors, his regular golf games, and most importantly, his lovely family.  Dayne joins me today to discuss how his foray into blogging went from being just a hobby to becoming a full-on professional agency. He shares the process that he and his team use to ensure efficient collaboration, despite their geographical distance. He shares how he got into writing in the first place and how pursuing blogging as a full-time career completely transformed his feelings and outlook regarding the craft. He also explains his approach to getting over the day-to-day challenges and obstacles in running his business and why it’s important to recognise the good and anticipate the bad as a business owner.  “If you have a job opening, just ask your current network, your current employees, if they recommend anyone. It doesn’t guarantee a good fit, but it does seem to take a lot of the work out of vetting someone.” Dayne Shuda This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast:  How Dayne’s initial foray into blogging as a hobby led to a full-time business. How his business grew from a small freelance engagement to a blogging agency with writers across the world. A breakdown of the process that they follow in writing blogs for their clients. The one search feature Dayne would like to see on Google in the future. How he has made working from home a viable working arrangement for him since 2012. What he definitely doesn’t miss about working in an office, especially during the winter. What drives him to continue operating his blogging business. How his perspective on writing changed because of blogging. A typical day in Dayne’s life. His priority list and how it guides both his day-to-day activities and his year-long plans. How the flexibility of his work has proven to be crucial in balancing his work life and family life. His experience in working with remote editors and writers. His new focus: podcasting. How he transitioned from operating on his own to working with a team. His preferred apps for productivity and collaboration. How reading and writing blogs increased his knowledge about a diverse range of topics. His daily morning routine and how he incorporates podcast listening into it.His outlook on solving problems and why it’s part and parcel of being a business owner. The importance of giving positive feedback to your team. Why you need to acknowledge the good in everything that comes your way.  Resources Mentioned:  G Suite FreshBooks PayPal Quetext Pocket  Connect with Dayne Shuda:  Ghost Blog Writers website Twitter LinkedIn    Top Tool to Consider Here I recommend a tool that I use. Don’t be a slave to tools / bright shiny objects though, you don’t have to use them all! As readers of my newsletter know, I’ve been doing some travelling this week and it reminded me of an app that’s really useful in those cases.  On iOS it’s the Apple Wallet and on Android it’s called Passbook Wallet  When I fly I check in online and then save the resulting boarding pass to my Wallet so all I have to do is scan my phone when going through departures. It’s really convenient especially when flying with hand luggage only.   I use the wallet on my iPhone when I book tickets with Cineworld too.
