Tuesday, September 11, 2001… 8:46 am EST – Flight 11 hits the North Tower between floors 93 and 99, killing everyone on board. Many inside die immediately or are trapped above the crash zone 9:03 am EST – Flight 175 hits the South Tower between floors 77 and 85. 9:59 am EST – The South Tower collapses. 10:28 am EST – The North Tower collapses.   On the morning of this event, I woke up to news reports of one of the Twin Towers being hit by an airplane, initially thinking it was some movie preview. As I drove to work, the other Tower was hit, with the realization that the United States was being attacked after receiving reports of the Pentagon being hit. By the time I parked my car, the South Tower fell. The North Tower fell after I arrived at my desk. More reports came of a fourth airplane that crashed in Pennsylvania that was believed to be on its way to Washington D.C. The mood was somber, with some employees crying at their desk. The drive home was quiet as I listened to music. At home, I watched the news report and comment on the day’s events and later the President’s address. For this week’s episode, I will be paying tribute to 9/11, talking about some of the video games affected by it: A mission for Foxhound about a new Metal Gear mecha, a superhero about to fight a boss at the top of the world, and cybernetic agent in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. Several people passed away last week: Dolly Parton, Peter Cullen, and Tim Curry. Dolly Parton was the Queen of Country and an American Sweetheart that saw the good in everything and everyone. Peter Cullen was the voice of leadership and strength through Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots from “The Transformers”, an 80s cartoon. Tim Curry is an actor and singer who’s talent span all forms of entertainment: from movies like Annie and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, to cartoons figures such as Captain James T Hook from “Peter Pan and the Pirates” and Konk from “The Pirates of Dark Water.” Today’s episode will pay tribute to Tim Curry by playing tracks from those video games he has lent his voice: A New Orleans detective haunted by nightmares, a mysterious guy who kidnaps most of the Mystery Gang except its dog, and an Arl who tries to stop the Grey Wardens to obtain power. Today we are celebrating the birthday of Daisuke Ishiwatari, a man that wears many hats as a composer, video game developer, illustrator, musician, and voice actor. He is known popularly known for the Guilty Gear series, for its character design, storyline, and music, along with voicing Sol Badguy (until 2007). He has collaborated with several musicians, including AISHA, Lapis Lazuli, and Naoki Hashimoto. He also helped compose the music for the Blazblue series, including Blazblue: Calamity Trigger, the first fighting game developed by Arc System Works. He cites several musical favorites, such as Whitesnake, The Beatles, Slayer, and Ringo Sheena. His characters, the locations, and key objects are named after rock and heavy metal musicians. Today on August 7th is National Sea Serpent Day, also known as Sea Dragon Day. It commemorates those mythological creatures that appear in many cultural and urban folklore. One of the more famous sea serpents is the Loch Ness Monster, nicknamed “Nessie”, supposedly photographed in Scotland. While the photograph has been debunked, Nessie definitely left a big mark of wonder and awe in society. Also, monsters thought to be mythical then have been confirmed to be real animals now, such as the giant oarfish, perceived by the Japanese as messengers of the sea god’s palace and thought to be omens of earthquakes and tsumani. Today, we’re celebrating National Day of Motoring, on July 24th, a day launched by MINI USA, the manufacturer of the Cooper, for the pure joy of driving for fun. At first, MINI encouraged their owners to take part in a nationwide rally to complete tasks and check in at certain stops along their route. Then it grew beyond the brand to include classic and modern cars. This day is meant for drivers and their passengers to explore new roads and destinations and share in the experience. Sometimes going the wrong way is a good thing… Just ask Douglas Groce Corrigan, a pilot who decide to fly in the ‘wrong direction’, and we’re celebrating National Wrong Way Corrigan Day on July 17th. It was on this day, back in 1938, that Corrigan didn’t follow his submitted flight plan, from New York to California. With a dream in his heart and the thought of Charles Lindbergh’s flight to Paris in his head, Corrigan left heading east after encountering heavy clouds and managed to make it to Dublin, Ireland on July 18th. While his license was suspended, Corrigan received a hero’s welcome, complete with ticker tape parades and movie contract to play as himself about his transatlantic flight (“The Flying Irishman”). He still states that “… I got mixed up in the clouds, and I must have flown in the wrong way.” On this week’s episode, we’re discussing video games in which things went the wrong way: a pet in a creepy mansion, a wayward Paladin charging into a rookery, and a livestream gameplay that went incredibly south. Today we’re celebrating the 26th anniversary of Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, back in July 10, 2001, exclusively for Sony’s PlayStation 2. It was the third installment and is the series’ first game within the sixth generation of consoles. While there is multiplayer mode via Arcade Mode, the core Gran Turismo experience lies in Simulation Mode. Earning licenses allows the player to access certain race courses and challenges, while winning these races gives credits, so that they can buy certain or their favorite cars to tune and race in more difficult races. The significant leap in technology (graphics, physics, sound design, car modelling, etc) added to the experience. Gran Turismo 3 is considered the best-selling in the series and the 2nd best-selling PlayStation 2 game.
