This year has been especially challenging as my chronic illness, the stressful sociopolitical environment, and my aging organs are all Venn diagramming. This episode is a voice memo to a friend about what it feels like to experience joy while walking through what often feels like a truly desolate wasteland. I'll add that within my small recovery community, I personally know 16 people who are experiencing—or have experienced—serious health issues. I don't think that's a coincidence, and there's plenty to learn about the connection. For now, I simply want to thank my recovery community for always providing me a safe place to land, and for the meetings that create floating docks in the ocean of life. p.s. This is part two of Wes' journey and her daughter's first year on Earth. I'm so grateful to Wes for her courage and generosity in sharing her story. She and I both hope that raising awareness regarding autism in babies will help another mother feel less confused and alone in the world. If you missed the first episode, here's the link. The slings and arrows never cease nor does hope. I was reminded of Krista Tippett's The Soul in Depression interview with Parker Palmer and the light they both brought to my dark place. Normalizing depression is so important. I hope you check out her podcast.

My recovery taught me that anger is often just grief in disguise. Once I stopped running from the grief, I had to learn how to move through it — and ultimately, into forgiveness. This workshop was a turning point for me, and I'm sharing it in hopes it becomes one for you, too.

In this 1995 talk, Fr Jim talks about his experience of being sober in AA and living with chronic physical pain. He ties how his relationship to pain is similar to his relationship to alcohol. 

I really enjoyed this conversation with Matt, who has decades of sobriety in AA and less than 5 months in OA. During my purifying-flames-of-hell years, every night I would fall asleep listening to this pitch by Bob Olson from Denver, Colorado. Bob is like the men in my family—stoic, old-school, very John Wayne. When I was with my dad, I felt safe from everyone but him. Listening to Bob would not only calm my nervous system but also give me hope for the healing power of 12 Step.

I’m honored to introduce Selah to my recovery community. Selah carried light through the darkest period of my adult life, and I’m not sure I would have made it through without her. So when the topic of “victim identity” arose, I knew she was the shaman to ask. As always, I hope this conversation with her, Stevi and myself carry light into any dark places that need it.

We then talked about being overly invested in our victim identity and how to shift out of that. I am a former devotee of the Queen of Control and step one is admitting I have no control. So, if I've fallen head first into a loaf of bread, my disease brain's reflexive move is to come up with a PLAN--a plan to regain control. Not good. I need an immediate antidote and since 2009, I found one. Chani from the Los Angeles OA website really understands the shape of my disease. We finished! It only took us 3 years and 8 months, but we did it! She was part of the first generation of Al-Anon members and, in her words, "we were the blind leading the blind". I loved this conversation with Sabrina and I’m very happy to share it. It’s definitely part of my Deep Dive series, where the conversation dives into deeper, darker waters because that’s our story.  We need to share our “causes and conditions” and “Capital T trauma” stories. If we don’t, we can feel like we’re more fucked up than our fellows and recovery won’t happen for us because we’re irreparably damaged. Ours is a disease of isolation that operates like a perpetrator and the first thing a perpetrator needs to do is get you alone. My hope is this series will let you know you are most definitely not alone.
