Conversation with Neil - The Tools of Underearners Anonymous

Our first episode on the symptoms of underearning sparked a lot of interest. In this follow-up, we take a closer look at the solution offered by Underearners Anonymous (UA), including the Twelve Step program and the practical Tools members use in recovery.  Underearners Anonymous Recovery Tools folder for Debtors Anonymous and Underearners Anonymous

Anorexics & Bulimics Anonymous Book Study Session 3

Excited to share this episode on chapter 3 "About Eating Disorders". This recording is longer than usual, so I did my best to edit out long pauses. Hopefully, it doesn't ruin the flow. I'm extremely grateful to Lynda and Max for their invaluable contributions.  Here is some more information on disassociation and eating disorders and intermittent disassociating. Comedy Break 2 - Sing-Along with Maria Bamford

Maria Bamford is our RuPaul. Here she is singing her classic sing-along, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" from her classic 2014 YouTube series. Fun fact: this YouTube series lead to her Plan B Standup Special and Netflix Lady Dynamite series.  https://mariabamford.com/

Droplets of Joy in a Wasteland

This year has been especially challenging as my chronic illness, the stressful sociopolitical environment, and my aging organs are all Venn diagramming. This episode is a voice memo to a friend about what it feels like to experience joy while walking through what often feels like a truly desolate wasteland. I'll add that within my small recovery community, I personally know 16 people who are experiencing—or have experienced—serious health issues. I don't think that's a coincidence, and there's plenty to learn about the connection. For now, I simply want to thank my recovery community for always providing me a safe place to land, and for the meetings that create floating docks in the ocean of life. p.s. I found the Grace Coddington clip I reference (incorrectly) and added it to the end.

Light Into Dark Places - Lorna K's "Freedom to Choose" AA Pitch

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Lorna Kelly was an incredible champion for recovery and I love listening to all her talks. She passed away in 2016 but her spirit continues to inspire.

Conversation with Wes - Part Two, Meeting Aurora

This is part two of Wes' journey and her daughter's first year on Earth. I'm so grateful to Wes for her courage and generosity in sharing her story. She and I both hope that raising awareness regarding autism in babies will help another mother feel less confused and alone in the world. If you missed the first episode, here's the link. Also, the sound quality is not great. I sound like I'm shouting into the mic and Wes sounds like she's on a walkman in 1985. We're working on finding a solution. In the meanwhile, here are links to the information we discuss at the end: Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 3: https://www.autismspeaks.org/levels-of-autism Global Development Delay Autosomal Dominant SRRM2:  https://www.alliancegenome.org/disease/DOID:0061045 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10445754/ Expressive Receptive Language Delay: https://www.research.chop.edu/car-autism-roadmap/language-disorders-in-children-on-the-autism-spectrum

Conversation with Neil - Underearners Anonymous

I'm very grateful to Neil for sharing his experience, strength, and hope with underearning. We then go through the symptoms of underearning as found on the official UA website.

Comedy Break 1 - OA, the Musical

'Stuck in a Sports Bra’ by mossyrockk is comic genius. Every time I hear it, I feel like I’m at opening night of the smash-hit musical My Life in OA. Here's a link to the YouTube video.

Conversation with Wes - Loving and Raising Her Autistic Daughter

I interviewed my friend Wes because she’s the firebreather, tech head, card-carrying straight wife, mom to an autistic child, homeschool advocate, snowflake-loving, blue state voting, seed librarian and council member we all need in our lives. You're welcome. 🐦‍🔥💚

Help During Dark Times - Parker Palmer

The slings and arrows never cease nor does hope. I was reminded of Krista Tippett's The Soul in Depression interview with Parker Palmer and the light they both brought to my dark place. Normalizing depression is so important. I hope you check out her podcast.

  12. 134

OA Workshop - Love & Forgiveness

My recovery taught me that anger is often just grief in disguise. Once I stopped running from the grief, I had to learn how to move through it — and ultimately, into forgiveness. This workshop was a turning point for me, and I'm sharing it in hopes it becomes one for you, too.

I can only hope this is the beginning of a new series! My friends Tom and Neil are back! We had a great discussion on 12 Step Recovery and spirituality behind self care. I hope you enjoy it! Light Into Dark Places - Earl H on Sober Relationships 2005

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, which is fine. I don't need them today like I did 13 years ago. In gratitude, I want to share their stories with you.

  17. 129

Winter Solstice Reflection - Love is a Verb

Or, "How disassociation promotes my self-centered way of being in the world." Seems appropriate. It's Winter Solstice, so why not? Truthfully, this topic has been up for me all year, and today I finally recorded my thoughts...AND, it just happens to be Winter Solstice. Are the two connected? You decide. p.s. Here's a link to the personal values test

  18. 128

Light Into Dark Places - Colleen T 2015

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Some still resonate and some don't. Either way, I am deeply grateful and want to share their stories with you.

    My Financial Sobriety Story

Bonnie asked me to send her a voice memo about my financial sobriety. Hopefully, it will be of service to someone else, too.  Link to Debtors Anonymous Newcomer Pamphlet Link to Debtors Anonymous Website Link to Consumer Credit Counseling Services. Light Into Dark Places - Fr Jim Living with Chronic Pain

In this 1995 talk, Fr Jim talks about his experience of being sober in AA and living with chronic physical pain. He ties how his relationship to pain is similar to his relationship to alcohol.

  21. 125

Deep Dive with Matt - Sober and Hitting an OA Bottom

I really enjoyed this conversation with Matt, who has decades of sobriety in AA and less than 5 months in OA. I pitched doing the podcast while he was fresh in the experience (and disorientation) of the slogan "Those AA credits don't transfer". He was immediately on board, and our hope is to help anyone else who may be celebrating their AA sobriety while feeling so beat up by the food. You are not alone.   Seconds and Inches

Light Into Dark Places - Richard Rohr Growing Up Men 2019

This is the unedited episode of Krista Tippet's On Being podcast with Franciscan Friar, Richard Rohr. I pray she forgives posting this conversation. For those who don't know, Richard Rohr is the author of Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the 12 Steps. Here is a link to the produced version of this episode.

Light Into Dark Places -- Bob O 2004

During my purifying-flames-of-hell years, every night I would fall asleep listening to this pitch by Bob Olson from Denver, Colorado. Bob is like the men in my family—stoic, old-school, very John Wayne. When I was with my dad, I felt safe from everyone but him. Listening to Bob would not only calm my nervous system but also give me hope for the healing power of 12 Step.

  24. 122

Conversation with Selah & Stevi - What is "Victim Identity"?

I’m honored to introduce Selah to my recovery community. Selah carried light through the darkest period of my adult life, and I’m not sure I would have made it through without her. So when the topic of “victim identity” arose, I knew she was the shaman to ask. As always, I hope this conversation with her, Stevi and myself carry light into any dark places that need it.

  25. 121

Light Into Dark Places - Ken D 2003

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, which is fine. I don't need them today like I did 13 years ago. In gratitude, I want to share their stories with you.

Conversation with Anya - Reflections on Sponsorship

I am grateful to Anya for her willingness to record our talk about sponsorship and share it with our fellowship. I hope we can talk again to follow up on the many threads we started and didn't finish!

  27. 119

Light Into Dark Places - Dr Paul O 1983

My “Light Into Dark Places” series pays tribute to speakers who carried light into my very dark days. Dr Paul is the author of big book story "Acceptance is the Answer" and I still enjoy listening to any of his talks.

  28. 118

Light Into Dark Places - Jack G 2007

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, which is fine. I don't need them today like I did 13 years ago. In gratitude, I want to share their stories with you.

OA Workshop - Love and Forgiveness Part 2

Sheila J's Love & Forgiveness workshop was vital to healing resentments towards my perpetrators. I'm very grateful for her courage for putting on this workshop and for the Los Angeles intergroup for making it available on their website.  This is part 2 of 2.

Light Into Dark Places - Fr Terry 1985

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, but that is not the case here. I have quoted Father Terry to my sponsees so often that I jokingly refer to him as my long-lost husband. I have several workshops by him (and others) on My Recovery Tools google drive. here is the Recovery Tools link in plain text: https://tinyurl.com/MyRecoveryTools

  33. 113

Conversation with Sabrina - Disassociation & Victim Identity

I'm very proud of Sabrina and I for this exploratory conversation. We talked about what is disassociation, what isn't, and where she and I fall on that scale. We then talked about being overly invested in our victim identity and how to shift out of that. We really enjoyed unpacking this topic and I'm proud of us both for how far we have traveled along our recovery roads.  Sabrina, you are an angel and I'm grateful for all that you bring to these podcasts!

Light Into Dark Places - Earl H 2018

This 2018 talk by Earl H on the meaning of AA's 3-sided triangle of "Recovery, Service, and Unity" is a personal favorite. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Step One - Recalibrating My Brain with Chani K

I am a former devotee of the Queen of Control and step one is admitting I have no control. So, if I've fallen head first into a loaf of bread, my disease brain's reflexive move is to come up with a PLAN--a plan to regain control. Not good. I need an immediate antidote and since 2009, I found one. Chani from the Los Angeles OA website really understands the shape of my disease. I merged all three of her talks from 2009, 2016, and 2017 into one audio file. Enjoy! As a former devotee, I like this word:

Light Into Dark Places - Keith L 1992

Tradition Study - Tradition Twelve - OA Principle of Spirituality

We finished! It only took us 3 years and 8 months, but we did it! Tradition 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) states, "Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities." The original tradition study speaker workshop was no longer available, so we listened to Peggy M's talk on Tradition 12, which we all enjoyed. AA Tradition 12 AA Traditions Illustrated Pamphlet

Light Into Dark Places - Blanche M (1986)

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, but that is not the case here. I absolutely love Blanche. She was part of the first generation of Al-Anon members and, in her words, "we were the blind leading the blind". Blanche was not officially Fr Tom's Al-Anon sponsor in title, but she was in practice. If you're ever listening to a Fr Tom Al-Anon workshop, you're listening to her legacy.

Deep Dive w Sabrina - Finding Belonging

I loved this conversation with Sabrina and I’m very happy to share it. It’s definitely part of my Deep Dive series, where the conversation dives into deeper, darker waters because that’s our story.  We need to share our “causes and conditions” and “Capital T trauma” stories. If we don’t, we can feel like we’re more fucked up than our fellows and recovery won’t happen for us because we’re irreparably damaged. Ours is a disease of isolation that operates like a perpetrator and the first thing a perpetrator needs to do is get you alone. My hope is this series will let you know you are most definitely not alone.

  48. 98

Light Into Dark Places - Bob E 1979

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, which is fine. I don't need them today like I did 13 years ago. In gratitude, I want to share their stories with you.  This speaker pitch is an AA classic known as either Headtrips or Vulture on the Bedpost.

Off The Cuff - My Struggle with Step 3

This a voice memo I sent to a bestie. I’m sharing it in case it helps anyone else.

Light Into Dark Places - Annie L 1995

My “Light Into Dark Places” series is to pay tribute to the speakers who carried light into my very, very dark years. Many don't resonate with me today, which is fine.
