I’ve never heard anyone say they thrive on conflict. Unfortunately, life greets us with this unwanted visitor all the time. It takes a well-conditioned courage muscle to face interpersonal conflict and handle it right. To psyche myself up and prepare to deal with a present conflict in my life, I decided to scour the Scriptures for help. Could I find one powerful example to follow? Join me today in my search. Change is hard. We get comfortable with the familiar and become fearful when change shows up. We can learn from Peter, who went through a change that rocked him to the core of his being. The Apostle Paul points out, “I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned” (Galatians 2:11 NIV). Sounds serious. Reflecting on all the changes in my life, I’ve never stood condemned in them. Have you? Peter struggled with moving from a life based on the Law to a new life based on faith alone. How do you start your day? Eyes open slowly. You reach for your phone to see if you’ve missed anything. Scroll through your Facebook feed to get your perspective on the day. Once that’s settled, you climb out of bed, shower, get dressed and head into the kitchen to see out your day-starting meal. We live on the other side of the resurrection, so the Holy Spirit is ours as soon as we believe in Jesus. In our passage from John 7 today, we learn two distinct purposes of the Holy Spirit. We have life within us. The Holy Spirit gives us the life of God himself. He lives in us. It’s an incomprehensible fact.  Life flows from us. The Holy Spirit wasn’t given to you for selfishness. He flows from you to the world. You have the hope of all hopes, salvation for the world. Reconciliation with God. There’s something extremely comforting to know that I have peace with God. I might struggle with a lot of things – relationships, tension at work, family differences, anxiety about finances, problem kids, lack of purpose – but one thing I do have is peace with God. That overarching truth comforts me. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1-2 NIV) Join me for today's audio devotional. “Stop giving! Keep your money in your pocket! The church doesn’t need it anymore! We’re shutting down the giving page on our website!” Can you imagine your pastor shouting that proclamation from the pulpit? It might sound absurd, but that’s exactly what Moses said to Israel in Exodus 36 (NIV). Let's look at that and other passages and see some powerful examples of extreme genrosity. KEY PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 8:1-7 (NIV) And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. Loneliness, worry, fear and disorientation show up in crisis. We’ve all been there. Even in the small trials, life seems out of control. Thankfully, we pray and God comforts. But we all need someone to come alongside us in times like this. The Apostle Paul had one of those friends, Onesimus, who ministered to him in his imprisonment. An escaped Philippian slave, Paul led this young man to Christ. Onesimus became such an important part of Paul’s life that he didn’t want to send him back to the Philippians. Let's explore that drama, and maybe yours, too, in our audio devotional today. American Dehydrated Onion & Garlic Association? It exists! So does the Dill Pickle Club. What if you pulled together a small group of believers who would make it a priority to be generous? Meet regularly. Tell stories. Not bragging about your generosity, but to inspire everyone in the group. What a great way to fulfill this verse: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV). It's the Generosity Club. God the Father and God the Son are patient with us. God doesn’t send lighting down to fry us or sweep us away with the Red Sea. He endures. He waits. Jesus prays for us. God is patient because he does not wish “that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9b ESV). Our love relationship with Christ should move us to be patient with every person around us, whether they’re our spouse or a stranger. Patience is merely evidence of our love for God and the people around us. Centering ourselves on the wonderful, intimate love of Jesus will inspire and empower us to be patient. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. What’s more important? The task or the person? When someone’s incompetence rears its head, think twice how you respond. Jesus shows us how to do patience over and over again in the gospels. People were more important to him than tasks and rituals. That’s why he healed on the Sabbath. If Jesus scorned us every time we demonstrated incompetence, we’d be a sorry soul. But Jesus does just the opposite. He’s patient. He loves us when we succeed and when we fail. He’s faithful to stick with us. Speed isn’t a big deal to him. He waits. When you have a choice between panic and patience, it's hard to choose patience. But remember that God is bigger than your crisis. He wants to use you and your situation to glorify himself, as well as build the golden habit of patience in you. It's a tough lesson, so let me lighten it up with my real-life, comical story. It all started when a strange number popped up on my phone on an early Sunday morning. For some reason, I answered it. Maybe I really wanted that free 5-night all-expenses-paid vacation in Las Vegas. “Jon, I think I left my phone in the Uber car on my way to the airport,” my wife said on a borrowed phone. And so began our Sabbath Day lesson in patience. Listen in for "the rest of the story." Peace of heart involves choices.  Will you let the world tell you what to do with every minute of your day, or will you respond to God?  No matter how busy your schedule is, you must find time to feed your soul.  The urgent isn’t always the best. Jesus found time, even in his busy schedule, for peace. He went away with God time after time. He needed the Father. He craved solitude. It refreshed him so he could face the crowds and the constant demands on his life. Today, we'll explore this further in our interactive devotional. You've been wronged, attacked, ridiculed, ignored, rejected, or slighted. It hurts. How can you recapture God’s soul peace when you have a wounded heart? There’s no step-by-step solution. It’s deeper than some textbook answer. You’re in pain and that requires healing. Can I point you to Jesus? “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3 ESV). Is there such thing as perfect peace?  Our hearts long for perfect peace, which we will only fully experience when we are in the presence of Jesus. We live in a fallen world, in which nothing is perfect. Even peace. Or so it seems. Let's go deeper in this today. “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10 NIV). That verse always gets me. It makes no sense – humanly speaking. And I’m a human. The statement before those nine words frustrate me even more. “I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.” Today, we're going to look deeply into Paul's life. KEY PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NIV) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. Surrender to the Lord can be a bit like my “harrowing” kayaking experience one summer. When I leaned to the right, lurched to the left and immediately realized I was totally out of control and headed for a splash, I gave in to the moment. I prepared to get wet. Why don’t we willingly give ourselves over to God as a way of life? Pride, self-will, selfishness. Burger King says we can have it our way, so we do. There’s something deeper. Paul starts Romans 12 with these words, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy…” Let's talk about surrender today. KEY PASSAGE: Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. When it comes to getting rest for our souls these days, has God left us to our own devices? Actually, I think he wants us to put them to rest so we can rest. Our devices . . . today’s biggest enemy to rest. We’ve heard the statistics. The average person spends over 75 minutes on social media each day, nearly a half hour texting, 25 minutes on email, 15 minutes playing games, and the rest of the time on calls and apps, for a total of over four hours a day. The biggest time waster used to be TV. Now it’s whatever we want it to be on our phone. Mom, you might be so exhausted that your hope for rest is gone. Your spouse or friends seem oblivious to your situation. Or, if they see your struggles, they don’t step in. You might have accepted that you’ll live like this for the next several years. But there is hope! God promises, “The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him” (Lamentations 3:25 NIV). Let's explore that principle today. KEY PASSAGE: Lamentations 3:22-26: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35 NIV). Jesus was fully God and fully man. And he often chose to rest. Reading through the Gospels, we see that this practice was a habit of Jesus. He commonly practiced rest and prayer together, in all hours of the day or night. Let’s take a look. KEY PASSAGE: Mark 1:32-29 (NIV) That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. Think of a time when you’ve been betrayed by someone you trusted. There are few things as painful as that. Emotions flood in. Anger. Grief. Anger. Frustration. Anger. I know about betrayal. It happened to me not too long ago. And I’m dealing with it. I may have suppressed some of the emotions, but I am sure they will emerge over the next few days. Come on the journey with me. Joy is deeper than an emotional high. The roots of joy run to our soul, just like a flourishing tree has roots running deep underground. Sometimes joy is expressed in peace, contentment, assurance, faith or a relaxed spirit. Joy has to be fed. Where do you turn to feed your joy? Today, we'll go to the best place to be fed. And learn a new exercise to better experience God's Word. KEY PASSAGE: Philippians 4:4-8 NIV Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17 ESV) Oh, how we toil, scratch and scrape our way through the day. We hurry. We rush. We beat the clock so we won’t be late for school, work, meetings, church, games . . . just about everything. We can hardly enjoy life at this pace.  Look what’s in the center of “enjoyment.” Take a good look. Joy!  We'll explore it further today as we start the week. How easy it is to praise Jesus when things are going right. In fact, we equate smooth sailing with God’s will. When things are good, we’re sure God has us in that great place. When things are bad, we question whether we’re in God’s will. Unfortunately, it’s the Western way of thinking. Not God’s way. We equate success with God’s blessing; hardship with his punishment. I know that’s a pretty harsh statement, but it’s true. Let's see if God changes our thinking in our time with him today. It’s often hard to comprehend that the Lord Jesus Christ is also your brother. How can it be? Jesus makes this statement, “He looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother’” (Mark 3:34-35 ESV). When you were adopted into God’s family through salvation, you immediately became a brother of Jesus. Although you’re considered a brother by adoption, Jesus doesn’t see it that way. He sees you as his full-fledged brother. This spiritual relationship is far more important to Jesus than the physical relationships of family. Be encouraged as we start the week together in today's audio devotional. What parent doesn’t know both the joy and pain of raising children? Our kids drive us to our knees. If you don’t have kids yet, I urge you to get a head start and begin praying for them now – even before they’re born. Whether it’s for their salvation, success or safety, our kids need our prayers. We need prayer, too, as parents. I believe that if we spend as much time praying for our kids as we spend trying to control their behavior, we’ll see a generation of God-loving, God-fearing young men and women. In this day and age, we isolate ourselves from our neighbors instead of engaging them. Living in Colorado for seven years, winters meant we could go months without even seeing our friends next door. We’d pull up to our house, open the garage door, drive in, close the door and go inside. The next morning we’d go through the same ritual in reverse. Our neighbors would do it, too. If one of our neighbors died, we wouldn’t even know it until spring! This has to change if we are to live out what Jesus tells us, “You are the salt of the earth. I am drawn into four crises where Jesus intervened in Luke 8. Four very different situations in one day where Jesus became the central figure to show his Lordship over all. I came away with a sense of peace and strength through a renewed faith in our Lord. I’d like you to experience the same as we go to the sea, the shore, and street. The feeding of the 5,000 is one of the most famous miracles in the New Testament. If you were there to witness it, wouldn’t your faith be solid and thriving for the rest of your life? The disciples were there with front row seats, yet their faith waned in the future. But that’s another story. Today, let’s look at this miraculous event as if you were there yourself. Among other things, Jesus used this to teach his disciples about faith . . . in him. “Just have faith,” she said. “It will all work out.” You’ve probably heard those words many times. But what are they based on? Positive thinking?   What is faith anyway? Can you describe it? I know I had a hard time defining this basic word. So, I decided to go on the hunt for official definitions. Come with me today and see what I found. Sometimes life stinks. People we trust let us down. It hurts when we’re the one left in pieces. Thankfully, God is faithful. We can always count on him. Even in the toughest of times and the sharpest of wounds, God remains faithful. Oh, how comforting that is. No matter who comes against you, deceives you or tries to destroy you, you can rest in God’s faithful character. Are you looking for God’s faithfulness in this season when someone has let you down? Just showing up can make a person’s day. This doesn’t work for everyone, but it works for many. People need people. Whether they have a serious disease or they’re lonely and discouraged, stopping by can change your friend’s life. Occasional visitors helped carry my wife through her tough season. We all want to know someone cares. One of my favorite Bible verses is this: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV). Let's explore this today. Join me for the Apostle Paul’s harrowing near-death experience on the seas as told in Acts 27 and 28. Paul begins by saying to the soldiers, “’Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.’” (Acts 27:10 NIV) A few verses later we learn, “Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.” (Acts 27:14-15 NIV) It only got worse, as Luke describes in vivid detail. How can you have the courage of the apostles? Not only to represent Jesus, but to simply keep going when life has a strangle-hold on you? When discouragement hits? Is your heart heavy, not believing that God could forgive a certain sin in your life? It might be something from long ago that keeps chewing on your soul. Or it might be something you did just yesterday that’s crushing you. Or a sin you repeat over and over, with no hope of escape. We need vision. You and I must have something that inspires us. An inspiring purpose that gets our head and eyes off the plow so we peer into the future. The farmer who plows sees the towering corn stalks, even though reality is six months away. He’s got huge motivation to get the plowing done – in his air-conditioned John Deere cab. He sees the end, the reward for his present labor. This vision fuels his plowing. Going row by row isn’t an end in itself. KEY PASSAGE: Ephesians 2:4-10 (ESV) But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. In our giving to God, we sometimes expect God to honor our generosity by giving back to us. Our eyes are drawn to Luke 6:38 as justification. “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (NIV). Pure generosity expects nothing in return. If we can develop that kind of heart, we are more in line with the heart of God. Let's be challenged today in our time together. KEY PASSAGE: Exodus 36:2-7 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work. They received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary. And the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. So all the skilled workers who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left what they were doing and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done.” Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work (NIV). Ideally, every gift we make to God should be a conscious act. These days, with automatic recurring giving to our church, missionaries, and ministries, we’ve put our giving on autopilot and never get a chance to land the plane. We miss one of the most exciting parts about flying. I’m not suggesting we go back to the old way of writing checks or putting cash in the offering plate. (However, if you do, hats off to you!) The point is that we want to make our giving a joyful experience. We want to feel something! Giving to God should never be boring. But many of us have made it that way. We need to practice creative generosity as part of our worship and our relationship with God. Let's think outside the box in today's audio devotional. Are you attracting people to Jesus or repelling them away from the Savior? The simple act of patience speaks loudly. It says, “I care about you. You’re important. I respect you.” In our selfish world, it stands out. You’re reflecting Jesus to them, which draws them to our Lord. Today, we'll see how Jesus modeled patience in an urgent situation. KEY PASSAGE: Luke 8:42-55 As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. Imagine being one of the disciples, gathered around Jesus as he spoke those amazing words in an isolated place with just them in his presence. They didn’t know what was ahead, but Jesus did. When we think of soul peace, it’s not always the big things that attack us.
