Whoever Receives You Receives Me | Matthew 10:40-42 with Dr. Chris Croghan
In this episode, we wrestle with one of Jesus’ shortest promises and one of our biggest temptations: turning the Gospel into a formula we can control. As Jesus says, “Whoever receives you receives me,” we explore how the kingdom of God comes not through our activity, but through Christ being received in the preaching of his Word—a passive gift that creates faith where and when it pleases God. Are Not Two Sparrows Sold for a Penny? | Matthew 10:24-39 with Lars Olson & Sarah Stenson
In this episode, Jesus prepares his disciples for a hard truth: the Gospel often provokes conflict, not comfort, and a sword, not worldly peace. Yet woven through these warnings is a repeated promise—“Do not be afraid”—because the kingdom of God does not depend on your strength, your courage, or your ability to hold on to Christ. The same Lord who knows every sparrow and every hair on your head sends his people into a hostile world with one message worth proclaiming from the rooftops: sinners are forgiven, and Christ's mercy refuses to stay behind closed doors.GOSPEL Matthew 10:24-3924 “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. Preaching vs Teaching | Matthew 9:35-10:8 with Sarah Stenson
In Matthew 9 and 10, Jesus looks out at a world of harassed and helpless sheep and responds not with more demands, but with compassion and the proclamation of the kingdom. In this episode we explore the difference between teaching and preaching, why miracles point beyond themselves, and how Christ sends his disciples with his own authority to deliver what they themselves first received. Following the emphasis of Gerhard Forde, the heart of the mission is not moral improvement or religious achievement, but announcing to lost sheep that the kingdom of heaven has come near in Jesus Christ.GOSPEL Matthew 9:35-10:835 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, "The kingdom of heaven has come near.' 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Mercy, Not Sacrifice| Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26 with Dr. Chris Croghan
In Matthew 9, Jesus walks straight past the people who think they have it together and calls a tax collector, dines with sinners, heals the unclean, and raises the dead—revealing what God actually desires: mercy, not sacrifice. In this episode we explore how every character in the story is defined not by their effort or worthiness, but by Christ’s action toward them, from Matthew leaving the tax booth to the woman who trusts Jesus can make her well. Following the insight of Martin Luther, this text turns religion upside down: the sick don’t heal themselves, the dead don’t raise themselves, and sinners don’t save themselves—Jesus does. GOSPEL Matthew 9:9-13, 18-269 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20 Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. 23 When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26 And the report of this spread throughout that district. On Holy Trinity Sunday, we step into Matthew 28 where the risen Jesus gathers doubting disciples on a mountain in Galilee and gives them the Church’s mission. In this episode we wrestle with the the Trinity—not as a human invention to explain God away, but as the Church’s confession that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united in delivering Christ’s promise to sinners through preaching and baptism. Clear Proclamation, In All Languages | Acts 2:1-21 with Lars Olson & Dr. Chris Croghan
On Pentecost, the promise Jesus made becomes reality as heaven crashes into earth with violent wind, tongues of fire, and a Word so powerful it overwhelms every other voice. In this episode we explore how the Holy Spirit doesn’t arrive as a vague feeling or private experience, but as God’s own speaking—creating faith by putting Christ’s death and resurrection into human ears in every language. And in true Martin Luther fashion, the first Christian sermon isn’t advice or law, but pure Gospel: you crucified Christ, God raised him from the dead, and forgiveness is now proclaimed for all people without distinction. GOSPEL Acts 2:1-21 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs -- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" 13 But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' The Scriptures Tell You Who You Are | Luke 24:44-53 with Dr. Chris Croghan
In Luke 24, after the resurrection and before the ascension, Jesus once again tells the disciples that everything in Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms was always about him—and then he does what they could never do for themselves: he opens their minds to understand the Scriptures. In this episode we wrestle with the deeply Lutheran claim that understanding Scripture isn’t mastering information, but standing under the Word as it exposes your sin and delivers Christ’s forgiveness. Are We In Control of Our Hearts? | John 14:15-21 with Sarah Stenson
In this episode we drop into Jesus’ farewell discourse in John 14, right after betrayal and denial are on the table, and hear a line that’s often twisted into a condition: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” We unpack how, in context, Jesus isn’t laying down a test but describing what happens when faith is given—love and obedience flow from a heart changed by his promise, not produced by human effort. In John 10, right on the heels of exposing the Pharisees’ blindness, Jesus shifts the image and declares that there is only one way into the sheepfold—and it’s not through climbing, striving, or proving yourself. In this episode we unpack how his sheep don’t follow better arguments or louder voices, but recognize the Shepherd who calls them by name and gives them life through his Word. The Road to Emmaus | Luke 24:13-35 with Dr. Chris Croghan
On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walk away from the empty tomb confused and disappointed, even after hearing the resurrection preached to them. In this episode we see how Jesus meets them in their blindness, draws out their unbelief, and then does what they cannot—interpreting all of Scripture and finally giving himself in the breaking of the bread. You Killed Jesus | John 18:1-19:42 with Dr. Chris Croghan & Lars Olson [Replay]

Because we’re grappling with the question, “Why did Jesus have to die?” in this conversation. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” 9 But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 40 They shouted in reply, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit. 10 Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? What Does Maundy Mean? | John 13:1-17,31b-35 with Lars Olson & Sarah Stenson [Replay]
In the first of two Holy Week bonus episodes, Lars Olson and Sarah Stenson break down what Jesus meant by giving us a new commandment to love one another in this Maundy Thursday text. Jesus demonstrates true humility by washing His disciples’ feet. He also commands us to love one another. Many will read this as a command in the Law, as an expectation of what they’re supposed to do. But what Jesus is depicting is what makes someone a disciple. A disciple is someone who betrays Christ. He’s not demanding more love from you. He’s giving you the thing that allows you to freely pour yourself out for your neighbor: faith in His mercy. GOSPEL John 13:1-17,31b-35 1 Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. He is Not Here | Matthew 28:1-10 with Lars Olson
On Easter morning in Matthew 28, we arrive with Mary Magdalene expecting death, but instead the earth shakes and a new creation breaks in where the crucified Jesus is no longer in the tomb. In this episode we resist the urge to soften the shock and simply preach what the text declares: “He is not here, he has risen, as he said”—a promise that turns fear into joy because it is spoken for you. Jesus Doesn’t Keep You From Dying | John 11:1-45 with Dr. Chris Croghan
In this episode we walk into the tomb at Bethany and confront a story people often soften into empathy, when it’s really a preview of why Jesus came—to conquer death itself. As Martha and Mary hope Jesus might have prevented death, he instead declares, “I am the resurrection and the life,” revealing that his mission isn’t to keep us from dying but to bring new life through it. We see that Christ’s Word does what no human effort can: it calls the dead out of the grave and authors a new identity where sin and death no longer get the final word.GOSPEL John 11:1-451 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him." 23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. He said, "I do not know."13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. Ask him; he is of age. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." 17 The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. Idols | Luke 21:5-19 with Lars Olson

Jesus tells his disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. We ask Sarah Stenson: Is it possible to pray without ceasing? Can you decide not to lose heart? What is the point of prayer? Jesus delivers one of the greatest promises in this passage. He says, “And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them.” God not only promises to hear our prayers, but he promises not to delay in responding to them. The roles are reversed in death with Lazarus on one side of the chasm with Abraham and the rich man calling out for mercy on the other side. The Sickness and the Sinner | Luke 13:10-17 with Sarah Stenson
Jesus heals a woman on the sabbath who had been suffering for 18 years.The leader of the synagogue ignores her praising God and rebukes Jesus for breaking the law by healing on the sabbath. Sarah Stenson teaches us how Jesus holds up the mirror to reveal what is in your heart. It comes down to whether or not you believe God judges you based on how good or bad you are at following the law, at being a good person. Jesus is the one who sets the woman free with his words of forgiveness. He gave her faith. Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" 17 When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
