129/365: Derbáil Kinsella at Malahide Castle, Co. Dublin

Like many people her age, Derbáil felt the pull of far away lands. She emigrated to the states when she was in her twenties, followed by a stint in Australia and then Canada. She’s recently returned home, with an Australian husband in tow, and feels like she’s back at square one. She’s finding her way in this almost new country which is far different from the one she left in her twenties. Working as an improv performer, storyteller, artist and educator, she acknowledges that financial sacrifices have to be made when choosing a creative career, and like far too many people, she and her husband are back living in her family home. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 128/365: Tom Connolly in Dingle

“Sauna Tom” as he's known around Dingle is a blow in whom the town loves. He moved down from Dublin a few years back and had the notion of setting up a sauna (he'd gotten the taste of sauna life and all its mental health benefits in Dublin and missed it dearly out West). He credits his business venture for introducing him to so many of the locals but for also incentivising him to learn Irish, sure it is in a gaeltacht after all.His life wasn't always so idyllic. He battled his depression demons and almost lost. Sitting in the back of Curran's bar today he opens up and tells me what it was like to be pushed right to the edge and come back again. This episode contains a story which might be distressing to some listeners, so please take care when listening.RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 127/365: Emily Savage in Dublin.

The little charmer who sits on Emily’s knee for our whole chat is Cara. She’s Emily’s baby and is the cutest wee dote of all time. Emily loves taking her for walks as she finds people are friendlier and chattier with her when she has a dog. Emily has faced all types of human interactions from strangers on the street and let’s just say, people can be very cruel. At the age of 7, Emily was badly burned in a house fire in France. Unfortunately, that’s not the shocking story here. The level of aftercare she received while recovering in hospital is what really shocked me. Emily felt that she was never given proper counselling. She didn’t know how to process what was happening to her. She bottled everything up and never spoke about the fire with friends or strangers until she was well into her adult life. Emily is just like most single 40 year old women you’ll meet, deleting and then re-downloading the dating apps, horrified at some of the replies that men offer up. But what makes Emily different from most, is her resilience. She’s very pragmatic. She sees what happened to her as something that could have happened to anyone. She doesn’t dwell on it or wonder “why me?”. She’s enjoying the life she has, with Cara, the little legend. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 126/365: George Kane, Aungier Street, Dublin.

George is a director of films and TV. I’ve never been 100% sure what a director does, even though I’ve worked as a stills photographer on his productions. George kindly fills me in on all he does as well as what propelled him along his journey into comedy, including the almost mandatory move to London that a lot of Irish creatives make. 125/365: Ged Walsh, Rathgar, Dublin.

Ged loves history, reading and Dexter (his dog). He’s an avid collector of signed books, and spends his time in his reading nook (akin to a garden shed) out his back garden. He’s a man who is full of quick wit and excellent banter and regale you with fantastic stories from around the area. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 124/365: Amelhyne O'Regan-Farineau in Grangegorman, Dublin

Ah the joys of being 22 and just handing in your last college assignment. Amelhyne reflects on her 4 years of college where she solidified her passion as an audiophile. She now has some beautiful decisions to make, whether to go straight into a coveted role in radio or podcast producing, or continue her education with a masters. Either way, she’s utterly convinced that the medium of radio is well and truly thriving with Gen Z. 123/365: Catherine Galway in Co. Kerry

We pulled our campervan up outside Catherine’s home in Kerry that she shares with her husband, Maurice. It’s the home where she raised her 4, now grown, children. She welcomes us with delicious vegan treats and a completely calming atmosphere. It’s the kind of home that you could sink into storytelling for hours, not watching the time tick by. Catherine prides herself on being a host and making her guests feel at ease, both in her home and at work where she runs “welcome home retreats”. She creates space for people to find their true selves through meditation, yoga, connecting to the environment around and blissful, luxurious comfort. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 122/365: Maurice Galway in Co. Kerry

Maurice is a natural born story teller. We sat at his kitchen table and he brought me on an incredible journey through his life. From his work as an artist and festival producer, to travelling around the world with three small kids, right up to being visited by a fox while eating a 9ct gold ball alone in the woods.I honestly won’t even attempt to paraphrase him, you’ll just have to listen!RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 121/365: Frances Fogarty in Dingle

After an epiphany on holidays, Frances packed in her manic life in hospitality and started a slow life, in the form of The Slow Concept. It’s a clothes shop in Dingle that sells Irish made and sustainable designs. With her own design work, she has managed to save 12 tonnes of towels and sheets from landfill, turning them into beautiful hand painted swim ponchos. Her workshop is tucked away out the back of her store, meaning the clothing only has a few feet to travel before it meets it’s new owners. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 120/365: Kevin Flannery at the Dingle Aquarium. Dingle

Kevin greeted us at the door of the Dingle aquarium and gave us a sneaky behind the scenes tour of the place (including the top of the shark tank). It's much bigger than you'd ever assume from the outside, full of incredible experiences (they even grow jellyfish out the back). Kevin is passionate about conservation. From indigenous toads, his beloved turtle Molly, to even the conservation of people. He chooses to memorialize local trailblazers in the marine biology field in his exhibitions so they're never forgotten. He's a character and you can tell he completely adores his work. He buzzes around the building, providing interesting tidbits of information to all the visitors around us.The story of why he started the aquarium is truly fascinating and best heard in his own words!RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 119/365: John Murphy, Pearse Street Train Station, Dublin.

You know those beautiful pianos you see in various train stations around? They’re the brain child of John Murphy (and his wife). He petitioned Irish Rail to invite a bit of musical goodness into people’s commutes. As a professional piano tuner, it gives him no greater joy than hearing people play a (tuned) piano in the wild, especially watching young kids getting the opportunity to practice before and after school. John has a bit of an engineer’s mind. He opens the piano and shows me the complexity of the mechanisms. Every little vibration needs to be carefully modified to make it sound as beautiful as it does. A true art. 118/365: Mark Ó’Géaráin at Massy’s Woods, Co. Dublin.

Mark is a storyteller. He held a position in the Dublin Leprechaun for 13 years, telling all sorts of folk tales, one of which he shares with us today. He’s a lover of sticks and unusual trees and is also sometimes a part time Santa (is there such a thing as a full time Santa?).Mark has a lovely cadence to his voice, as well as a sensitive kind of wit, which in turn makes him a great storyteller, especially one who represented the mischief of the leprechauns for so long. 117/365: Sorcha Durham in Dingle, Co. Kerry.

Sorcha is a musician, a mother and a Kerry native (even though sometimes she feels like a bit of a blow in). She grew up being part of quite a different family than what was the norm in West Kerry in the 90s, but it’s something that she prides herself in these days. With both parents being uilleann pipers, her childhood was soundtracked by what she describes as intense and sometimes melancholic music, but also extremely Irish. With ten years under her belt as part of the band Walking on Cars, she now makes her own music, and lives a settled life, in her lovely home with an incredible view. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 116/365: Zia Bergin-Holly, The Project Arts Centre, Dublin

The stage is Zia’s life, not necessarily being on it, but lighting it up and designing the sets. She has a very cool job, touring around to different theaters, dreaming up lighting cues and figuring out how to tell a story within a small dark space. Zia wasn’t always Zia. She was once Aislinn, but as a very creative and strong-willed 3 year old, she decided to change it, making all her family and friends go along with it until she could finally change it officially. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 114/365: Wayne Marshall, Phibsborough, Dublin

Wayne chose to meet in Phibsborough because he's a very polite man and thought he would make it easier for me to be closer to town. What we both discover mid interview is that we live about 20 feet from each other. His back garden looks into mine, our dogs clocked each other months ago, but yet we were oblivious. We could have done this interview in our garden! I was interested in meeting Wayne because he describes himself as just an “ordinary” man. He loves Bohs and the community he’s found there. He’s also recently taken up photography just “trying to find a hobby outside of going to the pub.” There’s a refreshing honesty and self-awareness to this statement, which to me feels a little extra-ordinary. 113/365: Christian Hoey in Castleknock, Dublin

Who knew hitting up a random swing dancing lesson could change your life? Christian fell in love, head over brogues, as soon as he laid eyes on the burlesque star, Sorcha. He swung her off her feet in the workmans, now, as a family, they cut a fine figure. They embrace a rockabilly/vintage kinda look that makes them truly unique at the school gates. Christian has lived a life and a half, from delivery driving, to becoming a master barber and now a master spray painter (of airplanes no less). He’s a storyteller at heart, bringing me on a journey with his tales, but what his story really comes down to is a lesson we all need to learn. When to slow down, reset, rest and mind your mental health. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 112/365: Loretta O’Sullivan, Ratoath, Co. Meath

Redundancy can be a blow to many. Some choose to spend their money on holidays, home improvements, fancy handbags even. Loretta spent it on herself, in the most life affirming and positive way possible. She invested in her dream career, she built herself a workshop out the back of her house (sacrificing what little garden they had). She went back to college, learned some new business skills and “returned to the bench”. The bench in question is a goldsmith's bench and it’s where she feels most creative and free. From her workshop she creates unique pieces of jewellery that tell beautiful stories. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 111/365: Lesley Bond, Monastervin, Co. Kildare

I am absolutely fascinated by Lesley Bond’s story. We met in Woodstack Café, which is nestled away in the woods in Kildare and feels like you’ve been transported back in time, and after hearing Lesley’s story it makes total sense. Lesley once held one of the most coveted (and viral) jobs in Ireland. We’re all seen it, we’ve all dreamed of it. Herself and her (now) husband, got hired as the caretakers of the Great Blasket island in 2019. They lived for six months, without electricity, wifi, or even a fridge. They spent their evenings in the tiny cottage, reading books by candlelight. In the daytime they’d welcome visitors to the island, serving them cups of tea (heated by their wee gas stoves), having the chats and providing some rudimentary accommodation as well. Lesley’s new book explains it all (and is so beautifully written too). 110/365: Una Healy, Howth

Do you remember the “guaranteed Irish” sign that you used to see on all the products, the little symbol that when you saw it, you knew the product was fairly sound and very Irish. A little mark you could trust. Well, Una Healy has developed a new mark, one that also helps consumers trust a product, service or brand. It’s the one that lets you know that a human has created the piece and that it hasn’t been AI generated. This little mark could be a game changer for artists (like myself) whose work sometimes drowns in a sea of AI slop. AI is everywhere and a lot of times it’s being used for the wrong purposes i.e. deception. Una saw a need for an indicator that when used by an artist or company, would ensure the consumer that what they were investing in came from a real human. It's a celebration of human ingenuity. I was very proud to sign up to Una’s ever growing global community of human celebration. As you’re probably aware, Sin Scéal Eile is very human focused. We tell real stories, in real voices, face to face, every day. It’s the most anti-AI generated project possible! RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 109/365: Emma Ferrari Ní Chearúil at Raidió Rí-Rá Studios, Fumbally Exchange.

Dare I be so cringe as to say that meeting Emma was like a breath of fresh Éire? She’s a Kildare native who attended gaelscoil but never felt truly fluent until she arrived in college. The love of the Irish language hit her like a tsunami, suddenly she was attending Irish social clubs, ordering pints as Gaeilge, and even changing her entire course to study Irish more. She now runs Raidió Rí-Rá where she encourages all presenters to use their cúpla focal to deliver pop music to the masses. She also champions new bands to write and sing in Irish, putting on events around Ireland, including her own stage at Electric Picnic.Emma is an Irish speaking force to be reckoned with. She’s passionate about two things, the Irish language and new Irish music and after a chat with her today I’m also buzzing about both. On a personal note, I’ve always regretted not being the type of student who grasped Irish in school. I grew up without it completely. However,  I try to make a conscious effort in my day to day to use the language more in the hopes that maybe it sticks, but I’m still seriously lacking the skills. This project (and all of my previous personal projects) have always been titled in Irish and English (with the Irish being first), I may not have the language, but I can certainly do my bit to promote and respect it. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 108/365: Gerard Kennedy, Kinsealy, Co. Dublin.

Gerry has had a wonderfully varied life, and it’s still going strong. He started young, just 16 years old when he began his 30 year career in Aer Lingus. From there, he went on to work for many different companies, even finding himself in the Oireachtas at one stage. It was after a brief stint in Papua New Guinea that he decided to change direction completely and in his 50s, began studying to become a barrister. In the other room is his partner Caroline, who hilariously likes to provide context and clarifications to Gerry’s stories, including how he managed to (somewhat accidentally) catfish her online! I have a feeling that I could have chatted to Gerry for hours more and still not got his whole story, as we were leaving he mentions that we didn’t even cover his love of physics or Depeche Mode!RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 107/365: Hazel Chu, Dublin City Hall

This project is somewhat reserved for people who don’t usually have a platform. It’s for sharing real stories, from real people, so I was a little bit trepidatious to interview a politician who would normally have their own audience and agenda. However, our podcast producer, Dee Reddy, assured me that her friend Hazel would give me her truly honest opinion and stories, and I was intrigued to meet an honest politician. Hazel charmed me from the get-go. Firstly, she suggested meeting in Dublin City Hall, one of my favourite venues and a place that I feel we should all have a bit more access to. Secondly, she turned up wearing a REPEAL jumper. Woman after my own heart. She’s not like politicians I’ve met before, the ones that crawl to my door and run away when I mention all the things they don’t want me to mention (housing crisis!).We talk openly, which is refreshing. She’s funny, chatty, relaxed and genuine. She seems to have gone into politics for the right reasons, not just to be a politician like so many who occupy seats at the moment. She’s a young mother, a woman of colour, and very clued in on all the issues that I feel so affected by right now. She works her charm some more and leaves me feeling that maybe I too should get involved in local politics. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 106/365: Lisa Keogh, Dublin Mountains

Sometimes you meet people who just have it made. They don’t ask for much from the world and in turn, they’re happy with their lot. Lisa brought her 3 kids, husband and 2 dogs to live at the foot of the Dublin mountains not too long ago. She now cherishes the peace and stillness she has. The dark skies at night allow her to watch the stars and during the day, in true Disney Princess style, she’s visited by a herd of deer.It seems idyllic but not without sacrifice either, like being snowed in and left without water when the power goes, but the pros far out weigh the cons.RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 105/365: Cara Byrne, Tiknock, Co Dublin

It’s not often that I hike anymore, I’m usually in the car, travelling around Ireland meeting folk for this project. When Cara suggested a walk & talk style of interview I was intrigued. That’s what she does professionally, she’s a psychotherapist who hikes with her clients. It’s a novel and unique idea. She finds that walking with her clients is a perfect distraction for those who might not be able to sit still and concentrate in an office setting (like the neurodivergent amongst us). It’s also a great way to introduce people to therapy who might be a bit sceptical about it. Not only do you feel better for chatting, but you also get your steps in and give your lungs some much needed fresh air (if you listen to the end you’ll hear me struggling to survive, proving that I really need to hike more!).RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 104/365: Amy Cahill, Dublin

At just 23 years of age, Amy is already living the dream. She’s young and but beautifully enthused about life and work and everything that’s coming her way. She always wanted to be a school teacher, and it’s her first year in the job. We stroll around the Botanic Gardens, just a stones throw from St Patrick’s college where just last year she graduated. She teaches a large group of second class students and by all accounts it sounds like she’s the “fun” teacher. She’s truly passionate about her job and you can even hear it in her stories that she really loves working with the children. 103/365: Ryan Roe, Lombard Street, Dublin.

Ryan is 27 but has a life tougher than most will ever know. His parents were only children themselves when they had him, just 15 & 17. They brought Ryan up in a house where he was surrounded by drug use and other harmful situations. But Ryan made a decision early on not to let his challenges define him. He worked hard, attended school and got his leaving cert. However, after years of battling just to live a normal life, he got himself caught up in a world he always tried to avoid. He sits here with me today and speaks so proudly and passionately but with lots of humility too, he knows that without the help of his grandparents and extended family, and even his school teachers, his life could have taken a very dark path. He’s an incredibly brave young man who has been clean and sober since September. Each day he tries to be a good role model for his younger siblings, so that they know how much they can accomplish in life. 102/365: Shantanu Starick, Harold’s Cross, Dublin

I met Shantanu at a festival a few years ago and straight away we buzzed off each other. He’s one of those priceless festival friends who when you spot across the crowd, you know that your night is going to go from zero to ninety instantly. When Ray O’Neill (97/365) told me that Shantanu had an epic origin story to tell, I was all ears. In 2015 Shantanu landed in Ireland, after completing an absolutely mind boggling and utterly ambitious photo project. I thought my wee 365 project was intense, but his was next level. “Between the 25th June 2012 and the 25th November 2015 I successfully traveled to all seven continents of the globe trading my services as a photographer for life’s basic necessities. No currency, no contracts, only my camera and the curiosity of a cat. In exchange for my skills as a professional photographer, my subjects provided a roof to sleep under, food to keep the stomach happy and a ticket or ride to the next trade. Shelter, food and transport traded for whatever photography work was needed.’RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. Declan and his mates have formed an “Old Dads Club”. He was 48 when he had his first child, and his second one soon after. We took around the Docklands where Declan has worked for the past 27 years, and he tells me about the joys of fatherhood, and the need to keep fit to keep up with his little ones. He starts his day at 5am, so that he can be home in good time to play with the kids, help with the housework and do storytime at bed.                Sin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 100/365: Miriam Lanigan, Shankhill, Dublin.

Miriam didn’t always have narcolepsy, she developed it when she was in her 40s. It sounds like an incredibly debilitating disorder to have. It affects her ability to drive, to work and to just partake in the simplest of life’s tasks. She is battling with tiredness the whole time she’s awakeShe also suffers with cataplexy, which she describes as almost being drunk, your legs just go from under you, you lose control of your muscles, and you cannot speak to let those around you know that you’ll be fine in a few moments. With all of this going on, it’s hard for Miriam to travel, to visit her son and his family in Canada. She’s fearful of airports and high stress situations that can bring on the cataplexy. However, she’s still positive. She feels that out of all the neurological disorders she could have gotten, this one was the best.RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. For this daily portrait and podcast project, I’ve invited people to tell me their stories. These can be any stories at all that people wish to share and be remembered for, anything that’s on their mind or that they feel defines them. I could not have anticipated the sheer volume of people who have been in touch who have been diagnosed with some form of cancer. It seems to be the illness that we’re suffering from the most and it’s wholly heartbreaking to see. We’ve chatted to people who have terminal cancer and who are getting treatment while trying to maximise their last few months and years. We’ve also chatted to people who have lost loved ones because of cancer and they’re trying to pick up the pieces of their lives. Cancer is a horrendous scourge that seemingly every single person has been in some way affected by. Peter Cooney has Stage Two Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but you won’t find him wallowing in despair, in fact, he’s happier now than he has ever been. The cancer that Peter has is thankfully very treatable with a high success rate. His team are confident that he will soon be cancer free, but what the cancer has done for him is truly remarkable.“I'm a naturally grumpy person, but I actually feel far more positive since getting the diagnosis. In the office it would have been well known that I was surly and the lads would always try to wind me up, make me crack. After the diagnosis, I whinge less. Nothing is really worth getting worked up about.” Peter has tried to not let his day to day life change too much, while still taking the treatment seriously, however he has noticed that the people around him have changed. “Everyone's come out of woodwork to show their support, even people I’ve not talked to in years.”“I think when you get diagnosed you really start to see the love around you, and the support that you have and it’s been incredible. I just get overly emotional now about the kindness and the love that people show. It’s turned me into a much more positive person than I’ve ever been.”Peter initially thought that the cancer diagnosis may have helped him write some dark and depressing music for his metal band, but he jokes “I thought, great, here’s a chance to play on the misery and use it in the band, but it just never came, I’ve got absolutely nothing and will have to switch to writing in major keys.”Peter is constantly seeing the funny side of his whole experience. He shaved his head when his hair fell out, but jokes that the only bad thing is now he looks more like his brother. He tells me stories about being in the hospital wards with some elderly men and how he found their constant chatter to be hilarious, as opposed to annoying, and how he was sent the worlds biggest pizza while on the ward and the embarrassment of having to carry it through the hospital.“My mates did a whip around and sent me sixteen hundred quid on Revolut. And I was like, you know, cancer treatment’s free?. He plans to have a massive party at the end of the year, put some cash behind the bar, and celebrate with his mates who have seen him through.“Like don't get me wrong, it is shit at times. But it's a minor inconvenience for six months. Whereas I get to then just continue with my life with a whole new perspective, new personality,  and I’m grateful for that, other people aren't that lucky.”Ruth’s Sin Scéal Eile – That’s Another Story conversations are available as a podcast and at sinscealeile.comRxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 98/365: Fatima Ahmed, The Coombe, Dublin City Centre.

Fatima is a strong, charismatic, funny and incredibly intellectual young Mother. She has chosen to share the story of her baby girl, Poppy, who was born still in April 2021 and is very much missed. Fatima feels that women today need to share their experiences of stillbirth, miscarriages and traumatic births more frequently and openly. She received a flood of messages from friends and acquaintances after losing Poppy, not realising the extent of people who shared similar experiences. There are far too many of my own friends who suffer in silence, when there’s really no need. Let’s start being real about childbirth, telling people the news, whether it’s happy or sad, so they can support you in your journey. Sin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 97/365: Ray O’Neill in Cabra, Dublin.

I can’t believe I got to meet the winner of Cabra’s Lovely Gardens competition. Ray moved into his beautiful home not too long ago and found himself in love with ‘Fabra’. The neighbours, the location, but mostly, the joy of having a bit of space to start a garden. It’s quite the achievement these days to be able to have a dream home like Ray’s, and he shares some handy tips to how he managed to snag his wee oasis, like bidding in December when most other people have clocked off for Christmas. He also trusted his mate to design it (a mate who had never designed a house before!)When he’s not cooking up a storm in his café/catering business, Slice, he’s entertaining mates at his kitchen island, always making sure to send them home with goodies from the garden. We happily walked away with all sorts of greens to keep us going.RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 96/365: Ken Eivers, Dublin Castle, Dublin.

Ken is a tour guide with a very unique selling point. He’s different from any other tour guide you’ll find in Dublin City Centre and I’ll bet you that he knows these streets better than any other Dubliner. Ken once called the streets of Dublin home. He has lived a life alongside addiction and all that that brings with it, including sleeping rough, frequenting homeless shelters and methadone clinics. He takes me on a tour around Dublin Castle, Christchurch, and up to Stephen’s Green, pointing out various buildings that I’ve never noticed before, explaining the different types of homeless hostels and rating the good vs the bad ones. He shares his own story of addiction and recovery, the people and organisations who helped him get clean and stay clean and how he now, as part of Secret Street Tours, takes tourists around his old haunts and gives them a truly unique insight into this city. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 95/365: Ann Byrne in Crumlin, Dublin

Ann’s story could have been one of sadness, anger, total depression. She had every right to take to the bed and wallow in her misfortune when her husband received his diagnosis of terminal cancer, but she couldn’t, she had a newborn baby to care for. Javier navigated the hospital wards and into surgery on his own. It was the height of lockdown, people were social distancing, hospitals were only allowing the patients in. The world was terrifying and isolating. When their little girl was just 15 months old, Javier passed away surrounded by his friends and family in Spain. Ann has gone on to do wonderful things with her grief (as mad as that may sound). She noticed a real lack of support groups in her community for grieving people, so she has since started one in Rialto. It’s a space where people can come and support each other, sharing stories and experiences. Ann also practices Reiki healing and finds enormous purpose and strength in helping others through their darkest days. 94/365: Karen Cowley, Killester, Dublin.

We committed to releasing one interview a day for every day this year, and today we very nearly dropped the ball. Between interviewees cancelling for lots of truly valid reasons as well as fuel strikes blocking the road and just general bad luck, we came extremely close to not having an episode. In steps the legendary Karen Cowley to save the day. In the last few years, Karen’s whole life has shifted. I’ve known her mainly as a musician in the band Wyvern Lingo but of late, she has stepped into motherhood and education (both as a student and a teacher) all while developing a passion for the harp (that someone randomly dropped on her doorstep). You can catch her performing under the moniker Krea in Little Whelans on May 7th. 93/365 : Gabriela Meade Diaz, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

I met Gabriela in her home in rural Mayo. Her two year old son clings to her and it's so wonderful to hear her speaking Spanish to him. Gabi is from Mexico City, a bustling urban environment with over 20 million people. These days, her world is smaller, in a tiny village of just a few hundred, but she's confident it's the best place to bring up a child, even though she misses a lot from home. 92/365: Ali Boylan in Wicklow

Motherhood and pregnancy is something that a lot of people wish to talk to me about in this daily podcast project so of course I oblige. It’s a topic that doesn’t affect me personally (apart from being born myself) as I don’t have any children, nor do I plan on having any. Possibly one of the factors that turned me off having children was the way that the birthing process is handled in Ireland. I don’t like hospitals, and I naively thought that was the only choice in childbirth. Until this week, when I met Ali Boylan, a registered HSE midwife, who cleared up some very common myths that besiege her profession. Ali is a home birth midwife and believes greatly in empowering women and their partners to have their babies from the comfort of their own homes. She is a very ‘hands off’ midwife. “I say to couples, you guys are having a baby and I'm going to come and keep you clinically safe and I'm going to be with you. But it's you having the baby, you're having the baby and you're okay.”Ali says that “the free HSE homebirth service is the best kept secret of the HSE.Most of the consultants in Irish hospitals, especially in the Dublin ones that I've worked in, they've never seen quiet, calm, sacred spaces. They’ve usually never seen a physiological birth.” She notes that a lot of GPs will rarely promote the service, so it really is kept secret.  Ali is adamant that birthing at home is safe, even for first time Mums. She has a backup midwife in attendance at all times as well as an ambulance service on standby, just in case it’s needed. “I work with the mum and the family and we build up a relationship so that when I come into the birth, I know what her blood pressure usually is. I know what her baby's heart rate usually is. I know how she responds in different situations. I know her partner well enough that I can ask if she's looking okay to you. She feels safe with me because she knows me. She’s not stressed, so we're not adding in any cortisol or any adrenaline to the situation. The physiological hormones can work and the mother can birth her baby knowing that she's being held. And it doesn't make birth more romantic or more orgasmic, it’s just the comfort in safety and being at home.” The aftercare she provides seems absolutely extraordinary and I know for a fact that a lot of my friends would have been thrilled with receiving so much help.“About an hour or two after birthing, I help them shower, dress them, and take them back to bed with the baby. I make sure the baby is feeding and settled and then I go home. I come back to visit for 7 to 10 days after that to make sure everyone is fed, sleeping and that mother has transitioned well into motherhood.”I'm delighted to share an insight into Ali's profession today and hopefully spread the message of what she does to whomever might be considering having a baby and is looking for an alternative birthing experience. . “When you get a woman through a physiological birth, she feels empowered. Imagine if all the women, all your friends that had babies were feeling on top of the world and they felt like they did something that can change the world, rather than coming home a bit broken, a bit shook, scared and traumatised. That's going to change how you show up in the world, isn't it?”Sin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. 91/365: George Fitzgerald in Finglas, Dublin

George is my nextdoor neighbour. We live in a little estate in the middle of Finglas and it’s the kind of place where everyone knows each other and you’ll also keep an eye out for each other. Shamefully I knew little of George’s life before this conversation so it was a total treat to be invited into his home and hear all his stories. He spent 30 odd years working for An Post, had 4 sons and married his late wife Marie back when he was 19 (they met when he was 15). He’s hilarious and kind. Born in the tenements in Ballyfermot and has lived a full life ever since. I could probably talk to George every day for the rest of the year and still not run out of stories. Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. 90/365: Sarah Elaine McHugh, County Library Tallaght.

I’m just going to preface this by saying I LOVE a library. The admin of this daily project is huge, I don’t have an office or a studio, we live in a tiny apartment, so I take myself off to my old college library and bask in the quiet. It’s been years since I’ve been to a public library and Sarah tells me just how much they’ve changed. No joining fees, no late fees, playstation games to borrow and even sewing machines! Not to mention that when you borrow a book from one library, you can bring it back to any other library in Ireland. That’s a game changer for campervan life! Sarah has a huge grá for libraries, which started from childhood when visiting her librarian Aunty at work. She sees the impact that a space like this can have on a community. Welcoming vulnerable people on a cold day, providing quiet and calm in a noisy world and just generally being sound and allowing people to occupy space without the need to spend money. I was only delighted to sign up for my brand new public library card today.Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. Jess has recently discovered a whole new strand to her family. She bought a DNA test for her Mum’s birthday and now has a new uncle and a whole heap of cousins. It’s amazing to think back to just a few generations ago, when people often made heartbreaking decisions to give up much loved children and the need to take those secrets to the grave. Together they’ve been discovering so much about their own history and unique connection with Ireland, tracing their Nigerian side as far back as 1930 in Dublin.Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. Dimitrios is Greek by birth, but Irish by heart. He arrived here in 1989 and was met with nothing but good old Irish hospitality (a cup of tea and a scone). He speaks so fondly of Ireland that I find myself beaming with pride as he reads a short piece he wrote about his experience of being an immigrant in our country. Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. 87/365: Alan LaCasse, Co. Laois.

Life feels truly unfair sometimes. All Alan has wanted in life is a family of his own. After being abandoned at a train station in the UK by his mother when he was a child, he finally made his way back to Ireland and started his own family. He has 5 wonderful children, a wife and a 10 week old puppy called Elvis. When Alan first reached out to me, he wanted to tell me his adoption story, that was November 2025. By the time I made it to Laois, Alan had received some devastating news. In December 2025 he started to get some worrying symptoms. He twinged his back while carrying his 5 year old autistic son and he also had blood in his stool. At the hospital he was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. The cancer has spread to his liver and bones. His back is fractured due to weakened bones, leaving him fairly bedridden. His life has been turned upside down and even with chemo he’s not sure how long he has left. All he wants now is to do everything as big and extravagantly as possible so as to leave his kids with the most amazing memories of him. He’s secured concert tickets for the older ones, hoping maybe they’ll get to meet their musical heroes and remember the night forever. He is also trying to figure out something perfectly ‘Mickey Mouse’ related for the youngest. In an ideal world he’d take them all to Disneyland. In an ideal world, his cancer wouldn’t exist. Chatting to me today was exhausting for Alan, but he did it so that other people would take their symptoms seriously. More and more people under 50 are presenting with colon cancer. If bowel cancer is found early, it’s easier to treat and there’s a better chance of recovery.Today is the start of Bowel Cancer Awareness month. Today’s episode was earmarked for my pal, Glenn Keating. We were to record his own story of bowel cancer on March 18th, but cancer took him sooner than we all thought. Meeting Alan, hearing his story (so similar to Glenn’s), and publishing it on this day, was all purely coincidental.I’m so grateful to Alan for sharing his story today. Please see @bowelcancerireland for more information, get yourself screened regularly, and take all symptoms seriously. RxSin Scéal Eile - That's Another Story was hosted and created by Ruth Medjber, with sound by Ronan Lally. She exploded her life not too long ago and luckily landed her dream job as a result. She works in children’s books for a publisher that she’s long admired. We have a fascinating chat about the psychology of reading and how she feels responsible for minding little minds. Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. 84/365: Lisa Walsh at the Liffey, Dublin City Centre

It was Lisa Walsh’s choice that we meet on the banks of the Liffey for our podcast chat today. She’s a true Northside Dubliner from Ballymun. She’s only lived at 3 addresses in her lifetime, a home bird by all accounts. Lisa, who trained as a social worker in child protection, loves the feeling of being rooted and acknowledges the sacredness of a home for her children, “It’s their home. They might never be able to afford a house of their own, so they need to see my home as theirs. I’ll leave it to them. But I don’t want to give them too much, I want them to earn for themselves, not to take privileges for granted so that their achievements are all the more sweeter”.Lisa is now an accomplished playwright who writes what she knows, community, people and Dublin. She describes the Liffey to me and suddenly it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time in years. “It holds the chaos of the city very calmly. When I’m near the Liffey I think of all the people who have crossed it, from South to North, like my parents did way back when they moved for a better life. I think of all the couples who had their photos taken on O’Connell bridge on nights out. The Liffey holds their hopes and dreams, and it’s happy being the rhythm of whole city. No matter what happens, the river holds it all, calmly.” I don’t think I’ve ever considered the Liffey to be a character in a story the way that Lisa describes it, playing a part in all of our lives. She is the first of her family to go to college. She crossed the Ha’penny bridge each day to attend Trinity, in her Doc Marten boots and tights, not knowing what was in store for her on the Southside, she almost used the Liffey as a source of courage. “I had no frame of reference for college, I hadn’t got a clue, I was terrified. When I got to the bridge, I remember it so clearly, it was like a magnet, holding on to me, rooting me. I took strength from that. I started to think I could do anything. With every step I got taller, louder, braver. I could take on anything that was in store for me in Trinity”Lisa and I continue writing a joint love letter to Dublin. My sound engineer who is recording the podcast quips that he’s never met anyone who loves Dublin more than me, until now. We talk about all the issues that affect people, especially young women, growing up in “working class” areas of Dublin. We talk about the social structures that can limit you. The “poverty trap” that informs Lisa’s work. She writes from a working class perspective the way that only those with a lived experience can. She grew up in a tight knit community and was always encouraged to advocate for herself.  Knowing when to fight for what you need, and knowing when to adapt and fly under the radar. Even in our short conversation I feel empowered and proud to be a Northside woman, our Dublin accents getting beautifully thicker with each sentence shared between us. I could have sat in Oli's beautiful wee cottage for hours and hours, drinking tea and listening to the story of his life. His home is as warm and inviting as he is. It's packed with art of various forms, including a gorgeous Mary statue passed down from his grandmother (which has been disco-fied to match the space). In his lovely home in Ballycastle, we sit on his handmade furniture. His beautiful pieces that would sell for hundreds, if not thousands, in a gallery, modestly decorate his living room. After her last wee dog crossed the rainbow bridge, she was obviously devastated. Alone in the house, she felt the loss even more, but decided to be both proactive and utterly selfless by taking on the challenge of raising a puppy for Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland. Along came Cupid and with him so much joy, boundless energy and a link to a whole new community of friends for Gillian. Come back tomorrow for another podcast/story/portrait. We’re interviewing and photographing people from all over Ireland, collecting their stories and sharing them daily.
