In the early to mid-1990s, several different groups of people began to think about and plan for Catholic radio in Omaha. A group of couples who had attended a Christians Encounter Christ (CEC) weekend took the task to heart. After nearly five years of negotiations, prayer and the generosity of a few local Catholic families, Catholic Radio–KVSS–hit the airwaves. In 1999, VSS Catholic Communications, Inc. purchased a 500-watt signal from an existing local radio station and immediately began broadcasting a mix of contemporary Christian music and Catholic programming from the EWTN Radio Network on the 88.9-FM frequency. Additional programming followed from St. Joseph Communications, Catholic Answers, Ave Maria and Starboard Communications. After broadcasting for ten years on a small signal, VSS partnered with Kolbe Media, a group of people committed to Catholic radio in the Lincoln, Nebraska community and on Jan. 29, 2009, Spirit Catholic Radio purchased a new signal on 102.7-FM, and expan

Discover the inspiring story of Blessed Stanley Rother, an Oklahoma farm boy who answered God's call to the priesthood and became a missionary to the people of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. Father Rother devoted himself completely to his parishioners, learning their language, serving their spiritual and physical needs, and remaining with them even as violence and persecution swept through the region. When his life was threatened, Father Rother returned to Oklahoma briefly—but ultimately chose to go back to his people, declaring, “The shepherd cannot run.” On July 28, 1981, he was murdered in his rectory, giving his life in service to Christ and the people he loved. Produced by the Oklahoma Catholic Radio Network, American Martyr explores the life, faith, ministry, courage, and lasting legacy of Blessed Stanley Rother—the first U.S.-born priest recognized by the Catholic Church as a martyr and the first U.S.-born priest to be beatified.

The Installation Mass of Archbishop Michael G. McGovern as the sixth Archbishop and eleventh Bishop of the Archdiocese of Omaha. This broadcast comes to you from the Spirit Catholic Radio Network and we're grateful you're with us for this historic moment in the life of the Church in Nebraska. Archbishop McGovern was born in 1964 in Evergreen Park, Illinois. A Chicago native, he was ordained a priest in 1994 and served in both parish and administrative roles in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He became Bishop of Belleville, Illinois in 2020, and was appointed Archbishop of Omaha by Pope Francis on March 31, 2025.
