The Chronicles of Persephone
by Carissa
In this podcast, I retell the last 7 years of Shadow Work through the lens of the Ancient Greek Myth of Persephone and her descent into the Underworld. Her myth gives us the framework to access and understand a Modern Journey of Ancient Wisdom. *This is an audio version of my youtube series of the same name.*When Persephone was young, she was a maiden named Kore. She was innocent, sweet and naive. She represents the part of us that gives to others freely and who dutifully plays the role that others need her to. One day, Kore is frolicking in a field and she see a Narcissus flower (planted by Hades - God of the Underworld). She's curious about the flower and desires it. She plucks it. This represents the part of us that gets curious about our own thoughts and feelings. When Kore picks the flower, this allows Hades to take her down into the Underworld. This is known as Kore's descent

The Point of No Return
So many of us have had an experience in life where we struggle with something for so long and finally, we just hit a wall. Whether it's in a job, in a relationship, in our faith, or in our life's plan. We had this idea of what life would be, or what we wanted it to be. But despite our best efforts to maintain the relationship or the work or the dream: something always seems to go wrong, or is out of our control, or it seems to always fall apart. It seems no matter how much effort, energy and time we put into it, we never get to that place where it fulfills us or is sustainable. And for those of us who are really stubborn, we'll dig our heels in and do absolutely everything in our strength and will to make it happen. But at some point, despite our every effort - it goes awry. It falls apart. Often, this becomes the turning point - where if we just let go of what's not working, it will make space for us to let in something new. And something potentially so much more fulfilling.

The Kore Years
I've always been a little embarassed by how naive I was for most of my life. Not embarassed of the version that is naive. I like her quirks and silliness and exuberance for life. But moreso embarassed that she didn't know how to act appropriately around others. It became really important for survival to tune into how others were perceiving her. And that led to her building a MASSIVE Protective Armor in the form of Self Shame and Self Repression If she just morphed into what others liked about her and needed her to be, then she would be safe. If she just dealt with all the harships and difficulties by herself and didn't let others know she was struggling and suffering, she would be safe. Then she wouldn't keep being perceived as "difficult", "overly-sensitive" or "just too much to be around". This is what I was like BEFORE I became aware of all that.

Using the Myth of Persephone to Understand our Own Healing Journey
Myth is extremely powerful. It can help us understand the ebb and flow of universal energy currents within our own lives. It can give us a framework to make sense of our journey. The Myth that I explore on my channel is the one about Persephone and her descent into the Underworld. If you're going through or have gone through a Dark Night of the Soul, or deep Shadow Work or "The Void" state -- you may recognize Persephone's Journey within your own.
