Ephesians has been described as "the queen of epistles." Paul describes himself as an apostle by the will of God. We look at what that means and the application to all Christians. Paul tells the Ephesians that they are saints. This Greek word for saints is very significant and has powerful applications for believers. Isaiah 66:20-24Isaiah ends his book of prophecy with wonderful assurances about eternal blessings for His people. All humanity will bow before Him; believers from every "tribe, tongue, and nation" revealing to us that the church will accomplish its great purpose of worldwide evangelism. God's people will join Him in the new heavens and new earth forever. Isaiah 66:17-20Isaiah briefly addresses the absolute end of false prophets, but then he turns to the glory of the Lord. In this setting, it is the glory of Jesus in His return to earth. In His omniscience He knows and will know the thoughts of every human. Survivors from all the earth will see Him and proclaim HIs glory everywhere, likely in a Millennial setting. Isaiah 66:14-16Isaiah tells us in verse fourteen of four results of His actions in the previous verses which will greatly benefit His people. But he also tells us of four aspects of God's wrathful fiery judgment. These are poured out on all the wicked and seem to point ultimately to the wrath of God on all nations at Armageddon. Isaiah 66:7-13Isaiah gives one of the most astounding prophecies in all of the Bible. That is, that Israel will return to their land and be restored as a nation in a single day under the sovereignty and providence of God. We look at the specific and amazing fulfillment of that prophecy. Isaiah 66:4-6The Lord brings to our attention four sins that the Jews have committed for which He will bring punishment. These sins are especially involved with a specific rejection of God's calling. We are reminded that whatever a man sows, that also will he reap. God warns His own people that we may be hated and rejected because of our devotion to Him. Isaiah 66:1-3God is eminent, exalted, and heaven is His throne. He cannot be contained in the universe or in the temple built for Him. We see that God made all things and made them with an immediacy, not over billions of years. We see also that in spite of the immensity and unfathomableness of God and our future glory with Him, what He desires to see in us now is humbleness, a contrite spirit, and respect that includes obedience to Him. Isaiah 61:8-11The Lord loves justice and will faithfully give the appropriate recompense for those who do justice and for those who do not. HIs covenant with HIs people is eternal. This covenant includes gentile believers and all God's people will be known among the nations, a possible reference to believers having perfect glorified bodies in the millennium! Isaiah 61:3- 7God will comfort His people. Some comfort is certainly given in this life, but it will be fully given in the future when Christ reigns on the earth. The Lord will eliminate mourning, sin, fear, and fainting. His people will be strong, "Oaks of righteousness." God will be glorified in us and through us. Isaiah 61:1-2Isaiah chapter sixty-one begins with Jesus' own words about the redemptive ministry He will have when He comes the first time in particular. The chapter begins with a clear reference to the trinity. We note five aspects to Messiah's ministry: bringing good news to the afflicted, binding up the broken-hearted, proclaiming liberty to captives, freedom for prisoners, and to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord. Isaiah 55:11-13God's word will absolutely accomplish what He sends it out to do. That purpose is very much tied up with the gospel which is what Isaiah 55 is all about. Part of the promise of the gospel includes eternal joy and peace. In fact, this passage pictures nature as celebrating the saving of God's people. Isaiah 55:6-11The Lord declares that people need to repent and seek Him immediately. The door of salvation will not be forever open. God gives us the offer of repentance resulting in abundant pardon. The Lord also assures us that His ways are not like our ways, they are infinitely higher. This is the offer of perspective. No one can perceive God's thoughts or ways or processes. Isaiah 55:1-5Most of chapter 55 is spoken by the pre-incarnate Messiah, Jesus. The invitation is to come and drink, without cost, of the waters of redemption and to not waste time on things that don't matter. This is the offer of mercy through which the Lord promises that through His mercy He will establish an everlasting covenant. The offer of Messiah, in verses 3-5, is given freely to all people. Isaiah 49:17-26The Lord promises He will never forget His people. His blessings and kindness and generosity will be beyond comprehension. Enemies will eventually disappear and the people will return to their land in excessive numbers. Hints at the presence of the church can be seen in this passage as well, present with Israel in the Millenium. Isaiah 49:9-16Chapter 49 continues to relate the great and undeserved blessing God will pour out on His people; spiritual and physical blessings on believing Jews and Christians. This is entirely because of Messiah's sacrifice in the cross, validated through the resurrections. The passage includes strong implications about the millennial reign of Christ on earth. Isaiah 55:8God’s work is always accomplished in the fullness of His time. This is a hugely important principle in the life of a believer. Isaiah 55:6-7Through the Messiah, the Father wants to save more than just the Jews; He wants all the gentiles to come to salvation as well. We see that the atonement is unlimited in scope. We note that although the text says Messiah will be rejected, even despised and abhorred, that one day He will rule over heaven and earth, both in the Millenium and into eternity. Isaiah 49:3-5Jesus Messiah is seen as the idealized Israel in the passage. Whatever Israel failed to do or to be as God’s representatives in their humanness, Jesus did perfectly. He was a light to all nations, glorified God, and served His Father perfectly in all things, and He was the actual means of atonement for sin. Nonetheless, we see that Jesus went through frustrations, sorrow, discouragement, and anger at human sin. Yet, we see that a right perspective on who God is can make all the difference in this life. Isaiah 49:1-2Jesus, Messiah, Son of God speaks in these verses, telling us about His conversation with God the Father. Numerous prophetic ideas are presented here which we see fulfilled in the New Testament in Christ. He will be born from the womb of a woman, He will speak unmitigated truth and even bring judgment someday. The Lord God will protect His Son until the exact right time for His redemptive death. Isaiah 45:22-25The Lord unequivocally calls all humans to salvation while reminding us that there is no other God and no other salvation. We do note that whether humans are ultimately saved or not, every knee shall bow and every tongue acknowledge that He alone is God. Paul actually quotes this verse in Philippians chapter two. We see that by three truths in verse twenty-three that God's words are unconditionally true: He has sworn by Himself, He speaks in righteousness, and His word will not turn back. Isaiah 45:19-21God's creation is planned and purposeful, designed and structured solely according to His will and desire. He says that His purposes are not a secret! In this passage the Lord challenges the idolaters to make their case for their idols, to prove they exist! Isaiah 45:13-18The Lord speaks again about Cyrus and how He will use Medo-Persia to deliver God's people. The seventy years captivity in Babylon will end precisely as it was prophesied to end even down to the exact year. We see prophetic hints of Messiah's ministry through God's use of Cyrus, but also the putting to shame of nations who reject the Lord and His Messiah. Isaiah 45:8-12God speaks to two absolutely essential matters that have never changed on His priority list: righteousness and salvation. He says that His righteousness is unchanging and His desire is for salvation to be known everywhere on the earth. Again God points to His position as creator of all things as evidence that He should be obeyed, not doubtfully questioned. He takes certain Jews to task over the matter of questioning His methods. The Lord tells us why He will raise up Cyrus, in a prophecy given more than one-hundred-fifty years in advance of its fulfillment! Isaiah 40:4-7In this passage we see prophetic aspects of Christ's second coming. Phrases in verse four and five are parallel to New Testament passages about the Lord's return.
