#367: Does Intermittent Fasting Actually Work for Diabetics?
It started with a simple question — does intermittent fasting live up to the hype?Ken and Graham both have opinions. And as usual, those opinions don't fully line up.Ken makes the case that the real benefits of intermittent fasting don't kick in until you hit that 16 to 18 hour window — and that for diabetics specifically, the morning hours are full of landmines that can derail a fast before it even gets started. Blood sugar drops during a morning workout, coffee, treating a low — any of these technically breaks the fast and changes the equation entirely.Graham takes a different angle. He's not opposed to intermittent fasting in theory, but his relationship with food goes far deeper than timing windows and eating schedules. And that's where the conversation takes a turn nobody saw coming. What starts as a nutrition debate evolves into one of the most honest conversations Ken and Graham have had about food, culture, identity, and how the way you were raised shapes everything about how you eat — including how you manage your blood sugar. Graham introduces a phrase that might just end up on a t-shirt — TFD for life — and explains what it means to live with a diabetes philosophy that was forged not just by medical advice, but by culture, family, and lived experience. This one goes places. And it's better for it.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhat intermittent fasting actually is — and when the real benefits start kicking inWhy the 16 to 18 hour fasting window matters more than most people realizeThe specific challenges intermittent fasting creates for Type 1 diabeticsWhy morning exercise and blood sugar management can derail a fast before it startsHow food culture and upbringing shape diabetes management in ways medicine doesn't account forWhy what works for one diabetic may never work for another — and why that's okayKen's honest take on GLP-1 medications and where they fit in a diabetes management strategyWhy looking in the mirror and being honest with yourself is the foundation of everythingWhat works for one person with diabetes may never work for another — and that's not failure, that's individuality. The goal isn't to follow someone else's plan. It's to understand your own body and how diabetes is going to fit into your life so you can take control of your LIFE. #366: Unfiltered Debate - Pre-Bolusing, Hard Truths & Two T1D's Who See Everything Differently
It started as a straightforward question — what are three things you do consistently well as a diabetic, and three things you wish you did better?Ken leads with pre-bolusing — the timing of insulin before meals — and makes the case that it is arguably the single most important habit in Type 1 Diabetes management outside of taking the correct amount of insulin. What follows is over 50 minutes of two people who genuinely respect each other but see diabetes management, coaching philosophy, personal accountability, and what it means to THRIVE with this condition through completely different lenses. The conversation gets heated and their views clash like thunder across the diabetes community. They debate weight management and whether the number on the scale actually matters. They get into what real consistency looks like — and why it's far easier to talk about than to actually take action. They disagree on how hard truths should be delivered and whether compassion or directness is the more powerful tool.Ken and Graham's different personalities, values, and philosophies collide like never before — raw, real, and unlike anything they've recorded before.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy pre-bolusing is arguably the most important habit in Type 1 diabetes managementHow to pre-bolus strategically even when you don't know how much you're going to eatWhy consistency is easier said than done — and what it actually takes to build itThe debate over whether body weight is a meaningful metric for diabeticsHow Ken's coaching mindset shapes every aspect of how he manages diabetes and lifeWhy Graham's competitive instinct drives his diabetes control in ways most people can't replicateWhat sports taught both Ken and Graham about hard work, honesty, and resilienceWhy you already know if you're not doing the things you should be doingYou know if you're not pre-bolusing. You know if you're not sleeping enough. You know if you're not exercising. You know if you're eating crap. You always know. #365: Can Type 1 Diabetes Be Cured? — What It Means for the Diabetes Community
In today's episode, the conversation leads into something Ken feels deeply — the frustration of hearing people claim that Type 1 diabetes can be cured. As an autoimmune condition, Type 1 operates differently than Type 2, and the constant lumping together of both conditions by researchers, politicians, and the media creates real harm for people navigating the daily reality of living insulin dependent. Ken makes the case for why the principles of good health apply to everyone — but the mechanisms, and especially the medication piece, are not the same. Then the episode shifts into one of the most practical conversations Ken and Graham have had — the real tradeoffs between wearing a CGM and going without one. Graham has chosen to step away from CGM and rely on finger sticks and MDI, and Ken respects that. But he also gets honest about what that choice means when it comes to getting meaningful support from your endocrinologist. Without continuous data, your doctor is working with a handful of snapshots. With it, they can see the full picture — and that changes everything about the quality of care you can receive.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhat happened at the ADA conference and why researchers were removedWhy the claim that Type 1 diabetes can be cured is so triggering for the communityHow the five pillars of health apply to everyone — diabetic or notThe key difference between Type 1 and Type 2 that gets overlooked constantlyWhy CGM data changes what your doctor can actually do for you in a 15-minute appointmentThe real tradeoffs of going CGM-free — and when it makes senseHow to advocate for yourself at a doctor's appointment without continuous dataWhy Ken is launching a new series called Diabetes ConfessionsYour doctor can only support you with the information you give them. The more data you bring to the table — whether from a CGM or careful self-monitoring — the better equipped they are to actually help you. Your care is only as good as your data.Additional ResourcesWatch our LIVE episodes Mondays & Wednesdays @2pm EST — Tune in Here🎯 5 Lessons You Can't Learn From Your Doctor — Free 5-Day Experience🌐 Website: SimplifyingDiabetes.com📚 The Diabetes Nutrition Master Course: Start Learning💪 Work with me: More Than A1C — 1on1 Coaching📞 Simplify Your Diabetes — Free Call: Book Now🎙 Donate to the Podcast: Contribute HereIf you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe and leave a 5-star review — it helps more people living with diabetes discover the podcast.Share this episode with someone who needs to hear an honest conversation about diabetes advocacy and what real support actually looks like.Podcast Disclaimer: Nothing that you hear on The Healthy Diabetic Podcast should be considered medical advice or otherwise; please always consult your medical TEAM before making any changes to your Diabetes management.Hey Diabuddy thank you for listening to show, send me some positive vibes with your favorite part of this episode.Support the show

#364: No Finish Line — How to Find Peace Living with Type 1 Diabetes
Every person with Type 1 diabetes has a date that changed their life forever. Ken and Graham get into whether we should celebrate it, fear it, or somewhere in between — and what your answer says about your relationship with this condition. It started with a simple question — do you know your diaversary? For Ken it's sometime in late June. For Graham it's around February 15th, the same month his family company was founded and named after him. But beyond the dates themselves, the question opened up one of the most honest conversations Ken and Graham have had about what it actually means to live with Type 1 diabetes for decades.Should we celebrate our diaversaries? Is it healthy to mark the day your life changed forever — or does it keep us tethered to a moment that's better left behind? Ken and Graham explore both sides of that coin and land somewhere that will resonate with anyone who has spent years navigating the emotional complexity of this condition. From there the conversation moves into one of the biggest questions in the Type 1 community — will there ever be a cure? Ken shares his honest perspective on what focusing on a cure does to your mental state, why he chooses to live in the present rather than wait for a finish line that may or may not come, and why that mindset shift is one of the most powerful things a person with diabetes can make. This one is equal parts honest, emotional, and grounding. It's exactly what the diabetes community needs to hear.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhat a diaversary is and why so many people in the diabetes community mark itWhy your relationship with your diagnosis date says a lot about your mindsetHow to approach the diaversary with positivity rather than grief or negativityWhy focusing on a diabetes cure can quietly fuel burnout and stall your lifeThe difference between advocating for a cure and waiting for oneWhy celebrating small wins in diabetes management matters more than most people thinkHow positive reinforcement — from your endo, your community, or yourself — changes everythingWhy giving yourself grace is one of the most underrated tools in diabetes managementYou can advocate for a cure and still choose to live fully right now. Waiting for a finish line that isn't guaranteed is a fast road to burnout — but celebrating the small wins, your decisions, and the progress you've already made is a path to confidence.Additional ResourcesWatch our LIVE episodes Mondays & Wednesdays @2pm EST — Tune in Here🎯 5 Lessons You Can't Learn From Your Doctor — Free 5-Day Experience🌐 Website: SimplifyingDiabetes.com📚 The Diabetes Nutrition Master Course: Start Learning💪 Work with me: More Than A1C — 1on1 Coaching📞 Simplify Your Diabetes — Free Call: Book Now🎙 Keep the Podcast going - Donate Today: Contribute HereIf you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe and leave a 5-star review — it helps more people living with diabetes discover the podcast.Share this episode with someone who needs a reminder that they're doing better than they think.Podcast Disclaimer: Nothing that you hear on The Healthy Diabetic Podcast should be considered medical advice or otherwise; please always consult your medical TEAM before making any changes to your Diabetes management.Hey Diabuddy thank you for listening to show, send me some positive vibes with your favorite part of this episode.Support the show

Diabetes technology is evolving faster than most people realize — and Ken and Graham break down exactly what that means for your day-to-day management. Plus, Ken closes with something every person living with diabetes needs to hear right now.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy Type 2 diabetics have historically not been prescribed CGMs — and how that's changingWhat the Dexcom Stelo and Abbott's new sensor mean for the broader diabetes populationWhy the explosion of diabetes technology companies is a sign of a major industry shiftWhat a true closed loop system actually is — and why what we've been calling one isn'tWhat Omnipod, Tandem, and Medtronic are working on that will change Type 1 managementKey findings from the 2026 ADA Conference and why it was one of the biggest yetWhy giving yourself grace is one of the most important parts of diabetes managementHow to reach out when diabetes feels isolating and overwhelmingThis condition is hard enough without constantly being in your own head. #362: Why Everything You've Been Told About GLP-1 Might Be Wrong - (LIVE-028)
Graham walked out of his endocrinologist appointment with two things nobody saw coming — a brand new insulin delivery patch and an Ozempic prescription. Ken had questions. A lot of them.First up is the CEQUR Simplicity insulin patch — a band-aid sized device that holds up to 200 units of insulin and delivers two units per click. No app, no screen, no tubing. Just insulin on your body, ready when you need it. Ken and Graham break down who this actually makes sense for and how it fits into a real insulin management strategy. Then comes the Ozempic conversation. Ken digs into what GLP-1 medications actually do biologically in Type 1 diabetes, why the way they're being marketed to the public is dangerously oversimplified, and why the reason you're taking it matters just as much as the medication itself. And somewhere in between — BMI. Why Ken thinks it's one of the most misleading metrics in medicine, and what should actually be happening at the point of a diabetes diagnosis. Two Type 1 diabetics. Nearly 50 years of lived experience. Zero sugarcoating.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhat the CEQUR Simplicity insulin patch is and how it actually worksWho benefits most from a two-unit click-delivery insulin systemWhy Graham's endocrinologist recommended Ozempic — and what that means for T1DWhat GLP-1 medications actually do biologically versus how they're marketedWhy the dose and the reason behind taking Ozempic matters enormouslyWhy Ken believes BMI is one of the least useful metrics in medicineThe difference between a pre-diabetes diagnosis and a single elevated readingWhy every diabetes diagnosis should include a 7-14 day follow-up and a glucose monitorHow to think about new diabetes technology as the CEO of your own healthAdditional Resources:Watch our LIVE episodes Mondays & Wednesdays @2pm EST - Tune in Here🎯 The 5-Lessons You Can't Learn From Your Doctor" - A 5-day all-encompassing educational experience - ITS-FREE🌐 Website: SimplifyingDiabetes.com📚 The Diabetes Nutrition Master Course: Start Learning💪 Work with me: More Than A1C - 1on1 Coaching 📞 Simplify Your Diabetes - Free Call: Book Now🎙 Donate to the Podcast: Contribute HereIf you enjoyed today’s episode, please subscribe and leave a 5-star review—it helps more people living with diabetes discover the podcast. #361: Why Managing Diabetes Feels Like a Full-Time Job - (LIVE-027)
In this episode, Ken and Graham have an honest conversation about one of the biggest challenges of living with Type 1 diabetes:The mental load of making thousands of decisions every single day.Diabetes isn’t just insulin, food, and numbers. It’s constant troubleshooting, analyzing patterns, adjusting plans, and trying to figure out why something happened when diabetes doesn’t always follow the rules.Graham shares the frustration of feeling like diabetes becomes an endless series of “projects”—testing different foods, analyzing patterns, and trying to understand why things work one day but not the next. That conversation leads into a deeper discussion about diabetes burnout and the exhaustion that comes from always trying to solve the next problem.Ken explains his approach to reducing that mental burden through diabetes checklists—a framework he uses to help people stop reacting emotionally and start working through problems systematically.Whether it’s a CGM that isn’t working correctly, an insulin pump issue, or unexpected blood sugar changes, the goal isn’t to eliminate every problem. The goal is to have a process that helps you make better decisions when those problems happen. This episode is a reminder that confidence with diabetes doesn’t come from having perfect numbers—it comes from knowing how to respond when things don’t go according to plan.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy diabetes burnout often comes from decision fatigueHow constant troubleshooting impacts mental healthWhy people with diabetes create “projects” to understand their bodiesHow to build a checklist for common diabetes challengesWhy having a process can reduce stress and overwhelmHow to troubleshoot CGM and insulin pump problems more effectivelyThe difference between reacting to diabetes and managing diabetesWhy confidence comes from experience, systems, and self-trustYou cannot control every blood sugar outcome—but you can control how you respond. #360: GLP-1 and their role in Type 1 diabetes - Kelly Schmidt
In this episode, Coach Ken sits down with Kelly Schmidt, diabetic dietitian and longtime Type 1 diabetes advocate, to have a deep conversation about one of the biggest topics in diabetes right now:With medications like Ozempic and other GLP-1-based therapies becoming more common, there are a lot of questions:1. Are these just weight-loss medications?2. Can people with Type 1 diabetes benefit from them?3. How do you use them safely?4. What happens with food, muscle, digestion, and long-term health?Kelly shares her personal experience using GLP-1 medications since 2017 and explains why these medications are about much more than weight loss. The conversation explores how GLP-1s impact appetite, digestion, hormones, inflammation, and blood sugar management.Ken and Kelly also discuss the difference between single agonists and dual agonists, why the “strongest” medication is not always the best medication, and why having conversations with your healthcare team is critical when deciding what works for your individual needs. The episode also dives into some of the biggest concerns people with Type 1 diabetes have:Can GLP-1 medications worsen gastroparesis?Do they cause bone loss? How do you protect muscle while using these medications? What role do protein and strength training play?Kelly shares practical guardrails around using these medications, including the importance of adequate nutrition, resistance training, and building systems that support your health—not just chasing a number on the scale. This episode is an honest conversation about a rapidly evolving area of diabetes care and how people with Type 1 diabetes can ask better questions, understand their options, and make informed decisions with their healthcare team.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy GLP-1 medications are about more than weight lossHow GLP-1 and dual agonist medications work differentlyThe importance of individualized medication decisionsWhy insurance access has become such a major challengeHow food quality impacts results while using GLP-1 medicationsWhy protein and strength training are essentialHow gastroparesis fits into the conversationWhy medication should support your health—not replace healthy habitsHow to have better conversations with your healthcare teamKelly's Other Episodes:Testosterone, Cortisol & Hormones in T1D - #334Diabetes Vulnerabilities - #135Debunking Diabetes Detox Myths - Episode #130Manipulating Your Blood Sugars During The Female Cycle - Episode #123The 5-Pillars to Healthy Blood Sugars - Episode #119Gut Health w/T1D Dietitian - Episode #117Food Sensitivities - Episode #72The Expert Dietitian Series - Part 3 - Episode #44The Expert Dietitian Series - Part 2 - Episode #40The Expert Dietitian Series - Part 1 - Episode #35Why Is Nutrition Important in Diabetes? - Episode #9Additional Resources:Watch our LIVE episodes Mondays & Wednesdays @2pm EST - Tune in Here🎯 The 5-Lessons You Can't Learn From Your Doctor" - A 5-day all-encompassing educational experience - ITS-FREE🌐 Website: SimplifyingDiabetes.com📚 The Diabetes Nutrition Master Course: Start Learning💪 Work with me: More Than A1C - 1on1 Coaching 📞 Simplify Your Diabetes - Free Call: Book Now🎙 Donate to the Podcast: Contribute HereIf you enjoyed today’s episode, please subscribe and leave a 5-star review—it helps more people living with diabetes discover the podcast. #341: The Truth About “Perfect” Blood Sugars, Travel, and Why Diabetes Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All - (LIVE - 011)
What does “good” diabetes management actually look like?In this episode, Coach Ken and Graham dive into a real, unfiltered conversation around insulin sensitivity, travel routines, nutrition strategies, and one of the biggest debates in diabetes: is there a “right” way to manage it?The episode kicks off with a relatable moment—overcorrecting low blood sugars—and quickly expands into a deeper discussion about how rapidly insulin sensitivity can change based on factors like movement, environment, and daily routine. From there, Ken introduces the concept of the “42 factors that affect blood sugar,” reinforcing the idea that diabetes management is far more complex than just carbs and insulin. The conversation then shifts into practical strategies for traveling with diabetes, including how to organize supplies, plan meals, and adjust expectations when routines change.Later in the episode, Ken and Graham explore a powerful and sometimes controversial topic:Should diabetes management be strict and rule-based?Or should it allow flexibility and real-life balance? They debate low-carb vs flexible nutrition, the role of mental health, and why sustainability—not perfection—is the key to long-term success. The episode closes with a deeper look at metrics like A1C, time in range, and average blood sugar, challenging the idea that these numbers alone define success.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy insulin sensitivity can change rapidly—even without obvious lifestyle changesThe impact of travel, routine, and environment on blood sugarsThe “42 factors” that influence diabetes managementHow to prepare for travel with diabetes (supplies, food, planning)Why having a personal target blood sugar matters more than broad rangesHow mental health impacts long-term diabetes successThere is no single “perfect” way to manage diabetes. The 42 Factors That Affect BS#285, #298, #304, #309, #311Additional Resources:🌐 Website: SimplifyingDiabetes.com📚 The Diabetes Nutrition Master Course: Start Learning💪 Work with me: More Than A1C - 1on1 Coaching 📞 Simplify Your Diabetes - Free Call: Book Now🎙 Donate to the Podcast: Contribute HereIf you enjoyed today’s episode, please subscribe and leave a 5-star review—it helps more people living with diabetes discover the podcast. In this episode, Coach Ken and Graham dive into a wide-ranging conversation about diabetes management, inhalable insulin, and the importance of taking ownership of your care.Ken shares his experience getting Afrezza (inhalable insulin) approved again through insurance and how it’s dramatically improving his blood sugar stability. The discussion explores how Afrezza works differently from traditional rapid-acting insulin and why some people living with diabetes use it as a powerful tool for correcting highs quickly. The conversation also moves into several old-school diabetes practices—from the 15-15 rule for treating lows to how people managed blood sugars before CGMs existed. Drawing from both her lived experience and her professional background as a social worker, Sara explains how access, education, mental health support, insurance navigation, and community all play critical roles in diabetes success. The conversation dives deep into why so many adults are misdiagnosed, why “compliance” is the wrong word in diabetes care, and how Blue Circle Health was created to close the massive gaps between what people with T1D need and what they can actually access. If you’ve ever felt unheard, unsupported, overwhelmed by insurance, or unsure where to turn for help with diabetes—this episode is for you.🔑 Key Takeaways from This EpisodeWhy adults are frequently misdiagnosed with Type 1 diabetesThe emotional and mental health toll of living with T1DWhy “compliance” is an outdated and harmful term in diabetes careHow access to education and support directly impacts outcomesThe role community plays in day-to-day diabetes managementWhy primary care alone often isn’t enough for T1DHow Blue Circle Health helps bridge gaps in diabetes careWhy empowerment and advocacy are essential skills for people with diabetes🌐 Learn more & check eligibility:https://www.bluecirclehealth.orgBlue Circle Health - InstagramI’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #325: Is AI the Missing Link in Diabetes Nutrition Management? - Aurelian Briner
In this today's episode, I sit down with Aurelian, CEO and co-founder of SNAQ, a mobile app designed to make meals less guesswork for people living with Type 1 diabetes.SNAQ was born out of lived experience. Aurelian’s wife was diagnosed with T1D over a decade ago, and like many people with diabetes, she constantly faced the same daily questions:How many carbs are in this meal? How heavy is this portion? How will this food affect my blood sugar later? From that frustration came the idea behind SNAQ — an app that allows users to take a photo of their food, estimate carbs and macronutrients, and connect meals directly to CGM, insulin, and activity data to uncover real-world patterns.🔑 Key TakeawaysCarb counting and portion estimation are major pain points for people with T1D.Taking photos of food can provide a practical starting point — not perfection.AI works best when paired with human awareness and lived experience.Logging some meals can still provide valuable insights — it doesn’t have to be every meal.Connecting meals with CGM and insulin data reveals patterns that numbers alone miss.Technology should reduce overwhelm, not create it.Expectation management is essential with any AI-based health tool. The future of diabetes care likely blends AI support with human connection.📌 Resources:SNAQ's websiteI’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #324: Diagnosed at 7, and Told She Should Never Have Kids - Jillian Khounchanh
In this powerful and deeply human episode, I sit down with Jillian, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 7 years old in 1991 — growing up in what many now call the dark ages of diabetes care.Jillian’s story is layered, emotional, and incredibly insightful. Raised by a mother who also lived with Type 1 diabetes, she navigated childhood, adolescence, eating disorders, evolving technology, and eventually three healthy pregnancies— all while learning what actually works for her body through Dr Richard K. Bernstein's teachings.🔑 Key TakeawaysGrowing up with T1D shapes your relationship with food, control, and self-trust.“Eat whatever you want and dose for it” is incomplete advice for many people.Protein and fat do impact blood sugars — often hours later.Low-carb works well for some people, but restriction is a fast path to burnout.Diabetes management must feel livable, not punishing.Pregnancy with Type 1 diabetes is absolutely possible — even multiple times.Hormones (puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum) dramatically affect insulin needs.Algorithms and automation can help — but they’re tools, not solutions.📌 Resources & Topics Mentioned in This EpisodeLow-carb & high-protein nutrition strategiesProtein and fat delayed glucose spikesExtended boluses & pump featuresCGM accuracy & algorithm limitationsDr. Richard K. #323: Why 'Doing Everything Right’ Still Feels So Hard - Coach Ken
In this solo episode I dive into one of the most important — and most misunderstood — concepts in diabetes management: SUSTAINABILITY.After reflecting on my own recent challenges with blood sugar fluctuations, stress, sleep, nutrition, and routine, I break down why even people who “know what they’re doing” can fall out of alignment — and why that’s not failure, it’s reality. This episode challenges the obsession with A1C and Time in Range as the main metrics of success and instead how reframing the conversation around blood sugar stability, mental health, flexibility, leads to longer diabetes stability. 🔑 Key TakeawaysSustainability matters more than perfection in diabetes management.A “good” A1C or Time in Range doesn’t automatically mean your diabetes is going well.Blood sugar stability is a better long-term goal than chasing numbers. You need a specific target blood sugar, not just a target range. Most blood sugar issues start with basal insulin, not food.Restrictive eating and over-exercising may work short-term but often fail long-term.Mental health, nutrition quality, sleep, movement, and dosing strategy all work together.Burnout often comes from rigidity, fear, and unrealistic expectations. The Five Pillars provide a simple framework to troubleshoot any diabetes issue. You’re allowed to experiment, adjust, and change your approach over time.🧩 The Five Pillars of Diabetes Success (Referenced Throughout)Mental HealthStrategic DosingConsistency & RoutineNutrition QualityPhysical Well-Being (Sleep, Hydration, Movement)Every diabetes challenge fits into one (or more) of these pillars.About the HostI’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #322: Misdiagnosed, Dismissed, and Still Thriving - Ashley Sparks
In today's episode, I sit down with Ashley Sparks, who was diagnosed with T1D at just 14 years old—during the first days of her freshman year of high school. What should have been a straightforward diagnosis quickly turned into a traumatic experience when doctors dismissed her symptoms and wrongly accused her of being pregnant instead of running basic diagnostic tests.Ashley shares her powerful journey from misdiagnosis and dismissal to becoming a confident self-advocate in her diabetes care. She opens up about navigating high school as the only student with T1D, being denied basic accommodations, and learning—often the hard way—how to speak up for herself in medical settings.🔑 Key TakeawaysMisdiagnosis and dismissal—especially for young women with diabetes—still happen far too often. You are allowed to question doctors, change providers, and advocate for yourself.Living with diabetes every day gives you insight no textbook can teach.Insurance barriers can directly impact health outcomes and emotional well-being.Movement, routine, and mental health support can dramatically improve diabetes stability. There is no “perfect diabetic”—and chasing perfection often leads to burnout.Eat the cookie. Bolus for it. Live your life.Community connection can be one of the most powerful tools for mental health with T1D.Ashley's Instagram:I’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #321: From the Dark Ages to Present Day: Carrie’s 45-Year Journey With T1D
In this episode, I sat down with Carrie Neher, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes since 1981 — long before CGMs, pumps, carb ratios, or even finger-stick meters were available. Diagnosed at 14 and hospitalized for two weeks, Carrie learned to manage diabetes in what she calls “the dark ages.”She shares what it was really like growing up using urine testing tablets, one daily shot of mixed insulin, and zero real-time glucose feedback — and the emotional weight that came with high A1Cs despite doing everything “right.🔑 Key TakeawaysDiabetes management before CGMs and meters required intuition, resilience, and guesswork.Shame and confusion were common because the tools simply didn’t exist to understand blood sugar.Exercise dramatically improves circulation, insulin sensitivity, and long-term health.Fear of lows is often rooted in one traumatic low event — and can be reframed with a plan.Gradually lowering your comfort range (ex: 150 → 130 → 110) is a powerful way to rebuild trust.Modern T1Ds often underestimate how life-changing today’s tools truly are.Community, encouragement, and support matter just as much as insulin and devices.“Bloom where you are planted.” Your circumstances don’t define your potential.Carrie's Instagram:I’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #320: From Pig Insulin to Inhaled Insulin - Adriana’s 35-Year Journey with T1D
In this powerful episode, I sit down with Adriana Wright, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just four years old and has now lived with T1D for nearly 35 years. Her story begins in the early 1990s — the “dark ages” of diabetes care — when blood sugar testing required giant blood drops, no CGMs existed, and kids with T1D often felt isolated, limited, or misunderstood.Adriana shares what it was like to grow up with diabetes before modern tools existed, how her family adapted overnight, and how resilience became the thread that carried her through childhood, adolescence, motherhood, and adulthood.🔑 Key TakeawaysDiabetes management has evolved dramatically — but the emotional challenges remain real.Kids diagnosed young often internalize “limitations” they never chose.Asking for help is difficult for many people with T1D — even when support is readily available.Resilience is built through decades of adapting, learning, self-advocating, and experimenting.High blood sugars are often harder to treat than lows — influencing personal fear patterns.Afrezza works differently for everyone, and real-world lived experience matters just as much as clinical instruction.Doctors are tools — not the sole source of wisdom. Real diabetes learning happens through lived experience and community. You are allowed to redefine your care team, your tools, and your approach.Connect With Adriana - InstagramAbout the Host - Coach KenI’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. #319: Pump or Pen: Which One Actually Gives You More Freedom
In today's episode, I break down one of the biggest debates in Type 1 diabetes: Insulin Pump vs. MDI. But instead of comparing the features, tech, and tools — I flip the discussion completely. Because it’s not really about which method is better — it's about which one supports your personality, your lifestyle, your mental bandwidth, your confidence, and your understanding of insulin.I explore why some people thrive on a pump and others feel more confident with injections, why technology can sometimes increase mental load instead of reducing it, and most importantly: why no device can fix diabetes without strategy, awareness, and ownership. This episode is an empowering, reflective coaching-style breakdown that will help you make a decision based not just on tech — but on who you are.🔑 Key TakeawaysWhy choosing between MDI and pump has more to do with self-awareness than features.Technology does not reduce decision-making — it only changes it.Pumps don’t give you control — you create control with understanding, not devices. Why starting on MDI often builds stronger decision-making skills. When pump switching is motivated by FOMO, burnout, or false expectations. Why doctors talk about technology, but don’t teach you mindset, ownership, or insulin strategy. The most important question to ask:👉 Does this tool support my confidence — or steal it?You can make either method work — if you understand your insulin, mindset, habits, and needs.About the HostI’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast.
