    Embodying Empathy

In this episode, Caya is joined by Naveena, queer storyteller, writer, and proud Tauiwi/tangata tiriti living in Aotearoa New Zealand. Together, we explore empathy as something deeply embodied: something we feel, practise, and return to through storytelling, poetry, vulnerability, community, and connection. Naveena reflects on how books and writing have shaped her understanding of others, how sharing poetry can create unexpected connections, and why discomfort is often necessary for growth.  This conversation moves gently through identity, migration, queerness, settler responsibility, spirituality, the digital world, and the need to stay connected in times that can feel overwhelming. It is an invitation to listen more closely, feel more honestly, and remember the small acts of care that keep us human.  Citation: Divakalala, C. & Naveena, N. (2026). Embodying Empathy. We Begin Again

The Hello Frequency returns for Season 3 with a new logo, music, and a reflective and intimate opening episode from me, your host Caya.   In this tender introduction, I honour the journey of the podcast so far - from the courage and curiosity of Season 1, to the grief, loss, and deep transformation that shaped Season 2. Season 3 begins on the 1st of May with a dedication to comradeship, solidarity, collective care, and the quiet ways we walk alongside one another through life. I reflect on grief, activism, embodiment, exhaustion, healing, and the costs of always showing up for others while sometimes abandoning the self. Drawing from memories of growing up in Northern Sri Lanka during war, community care, and nearly four decades of activism and responsibility, I ask: how do we keep caring without disappearing from ourselves? This season invites conversations on healing, embodiment, belonging, grief, pleasure, justice, spirituality, creativity, and what it means to stay human in complicated times.A gentle beginning. A return.A recommitment to empathy - not as performance, but as practice, responsibility, and embodying care. The Hello Frequency begins again.  Email: [email protected] Citation: Divakalala, C. Empathy, Healing, and the Journey Ahead

In this final episode of The Hello Frequency, Season 2, I reflect on a year shaped by empathy, losses, connections, healing, and profound transformations. Recorded from an empty home at the close of 2025 on the International Human Rights Day, this episode revisits the transformative conversations that defined this season, including from grief to belonging, care, solidarity, and the politics of empathy. With tenderness, honesty, trust, and hope, I share what this journey has meant, how it supported me through personal challenges, and what lies ahead for Season 3. A grounding, intimate closing to a season filled with courage, vulnerability, wisdom, and hope. My deepest gratitude to my guests, listeners, those who have shared insights, and promoted my podcast. Thank you for tuning in. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Consciously Tangata Tiriti: A Conversation on Empathy, History and ADHD

This week, I’m honoured to be joined by Shawn for a deeply honest, beautifully grounded conversation. We talk shared histories, being consciously tangata tiriti in Aotearoa, living with ADHD, the subtle art of creating radical empathy, and why kindness sometimes means setting firm boundaries. We hope you’ll join us, bring your own authentic take on empathy, and practise it in the realities you navigate. We hope you’ll join us, bring your own authentic take on empathy, and practise it in the realities you navigate. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Navigating Connections in a Complex World

Empathy is often seen as simple, just putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes. But in today’s world, shaped by rapid change, layered and intersectional identities and belongings, and deep-rooted inequalities, empathy has become much more nuanced and challenging. In this episode, my generous guest, Erin, and I unpack the complexities of empathy: what it truly means to care about those whose experiences differ from our own, how temporality and hierarchical systems shape our perspectives, and why it's crucial to approach life with intentional empathy, indeed, without compromising our own mental wellbeing. We explore the role of empathy in leadership, community building, and healing. There was a lot of “here is hoping”, and some have come true already. YAY! Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

    Empathy: Holding Space, Sharing Mana

In this powerfully grounded conversation, my guest, the insightful Ngahuia, and I explore the many layers of empathy. It is guided by asking ourselves, ‘What does it mean to truly see, feel, and stand with one another?’ From first introductions and the quiet comfort of a smile, to the deeper work of kindness, humility, and connection, empathy reminds us who we are and how we relate to the world around us. Mana is a Māori concept that speaks to a person’s inner power, dignity, and presence - a life force that comes from being true to oneself and maintaining respect for others, the land, and the wider community. It’s both personal and collective: we hold our own mana, and we also have a responsibility to protect and enhance the mana of others. When we act with empathy, humility, and authenticity, we strengthen mana all around us. Generous Guests of Season 1

In this special episode of The Hello Frequency, I’ve gathered a collection of memorable moments from our 2024 guests: the stories, insights, and sparks of wisdom that stayed with me long after the conversations ended. These short snippets capture the pulse of the year, including moments of clarity, laughter, and genuine connection. Tune in for a reflective and uplifting listen. For me, this episode is a reminder of how powerful our shared frequencies can be. I hope you find it soothing and healing. I do. It also motivates me to keep sprinkling more of what I call critical empathy: the kind that helps us nurture and sustain mutually respectful and rewarding connections. There will be a part two of this episode with many other voices. Thank you for tuning in. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

The Politics of Empathy: Beyond Feel-Good Morality

In this thought-provoking episode, Ee Ling  (the author of Fire Dragon Feminism; https://www.bloomsbury.com/au/fire-dragon-feminism-9781350447820/) and I deepen our critical takes on empathy. We want it to be questioned and celebrated. Together, we unpack how empathy is framed in dominant social and political discourses, asking what is truly being promoted when we talk about “being empathetic.” Is it a genuine connection, or a distraction from deeper structural injustices? To move towards real change, we argue that collective struggle, solidarity, and a critical awareness of historical continuities are essential. Empathy alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by justice, accountability, and the dismantling of oppressive systems. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Everyday Empathy: Small Acts, Big Meaning

In this heartfelt episode of The Hello Frequency, Archita and I take a thoughtful deep dive into what it truly means to live with empathy, not only towards others, but also towards oneself. We often talk about kindness as something we give away, yet forget that genuine compassion starts from within. With this episode, we’re back in real time, sharing conversations as they unfold, honest and rooted in the present moment. If you’ve ever wondered how kindness and self-awareness intertwine, or how to bring more empathy into your daily rhythm, this episode is for you. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Rethinking Empathy in a Divided World

What does empathy really mean beyond the buzzword? In this episode (recorded in May 2025), Kiran and I delve into how empathy helps us understand others’ lived experiences, nurture equity, and move past “us versus them” thinking. A reflective listen on learning, openness, and the courage to connect. Empathy isn’t just about feeling sorry for someone. It’s about taking the time to truly understand their world. Kiran and I talk about how empathy is built, how it’s lost, and how we can reclaim it to bridge divides and celebrate difference. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

    The Roots of Empathy

🌱 In this heartfelt and thought-provoking episode (recorded in April 2025), Coral and I delve into the essence of empathy as a living, reciprocal connection, not only between people, but with all forms of life and the natural world around us. We explore what it truly means to listen deeply, to give others the space to express themselves without fear of judgement, and to honour the quiet interdependence that binds humanity to nature. This episode invites you to pause, breathe, and remember: we are not apart from nature. We are nature. Every living and non-living thing around us is part of this shared existence. May we move through our days with awareness, care, and humility 🌿 Gracias, Coral, for reminding us that empathy begins with care! Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Beyond Sympathy: Understanding Empathy and Compassion

In this candid conversation, recorded in April 2025, Komal, host of It’s a Nomaste From Me, and I explore the challenges of practising empathy and compassion in a world shaped by unequal systems of power and persistent injustices. At times, anger feels like the only natural response, but living in that state comes at a cost, particularly to our mental and emotional wellbeing. Compassion ≠ taking on everyone’s pain. Let’s talk burnout, boundaries & why empathy is a tool, not a burden! Find Komal's podcast - It’s a Nomaste From Me - on Spotify and Youtube. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

    When Empathy Isn’t Enough

In this episode (recorded in April 2025), Swakshadip and I unravel why compassion alone cannot bring systemic change and how true empathy lies in solidarity, critical reflection, and collective action. We explore what it means to step beyond comfort zones, unlearn ingrained assumptions, and actively fight for justice even when the struggle is not our own. This is empathy that transforms. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Living Empathy: Stories of Care, and Connection

Recorded in April 2025, this heartfelt conversation with Aatir explores the many layers of empathy, including how it shapes our work, our care for others, and even how we receive it ourselves. A health and disability sector worker, passionate human being, spiritual soul, and lover of horror films, music, and theatre, Aatir reflects on the stories and lived experiences that have shaped his relationship with empathy. Together, we delve into mana-enhancing approaches to support work, the complexities of self-care, and the importance of normalising accessibility and mental health needs. This episode invites you to sit with the power of empathy, not just as an idea, but as something that “lives in the body,” – in Aatir’s words - and transforms how we connect with one another. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

    The Grounding Power of Empathy

Recorded in March 2025, in this conversation, my guest Sripriya, dives deep into the many dimensions of empathy, beyond the clichés of softness and sentimentality. Together, we explore how empathy is about making space not only for our own realities but also for those of others, without being consumed by negative emotions that can erode our own wellbeing. Sripriya invites us to explore empathy as discomfort that, if we stay with it long enough, can create a shift; as aroha and compassion that help us get organised in the world; and as an unapologetic stance that enables accountability alongside care. Please note: in some moments the audio quality could have been better, and we apologise for that. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Looking Inward to Reach Out: A Journey into Empathy with Dulani

In this episode, Dulani and I explore how empathy begins with us: through self-reflection, understanding our own behaviours, and learning to respond with compassion rather than criticism. We talk about the importance of making an effort to see where others are coming from, even when we’re not on the same page, and how reflection, forgiveness, and discernment can transform our relationships. Together, we unpack the difference between observation and interpretation, the role of judgement, and the power of choosing when to intervene. As feminist brown aunties ourselves, we remind each other that empathy is not just kindness. It is strength, perspective, and resilience. #EmpathyInAction #SelfReflection #InnerWork #CompassionFirst #TransformativeEmpathy #PersonalGrowth #Connections #UnderstandingOthers #ConsciousLiving #FeministVoices #BrownAuntieWisdom #CollectiveStrength #ResilientVoices  Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

    Jenny Janif: Sprinkling Empathy

In this conversation (recorded in April 2025) , Jenny and I reflect on humility, human rights, and migration while reckoning with colonial pasts and the complexities of our present realities. We explore how race, ethnicity, gender, and dominant narratives shape experiences for people of colour, and why telling our own stories and knowing our histories matters. Together, we consider the difference between sympathy and empathy, what it means to enter someone else’s world, and how connecting physically, emotionally, and spiritually can foster respectful spaces for dialogue. Guided by the belief in Nelson Mandela’s words that Jenny brought to this conversation, “Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future”, this episode invites listeners to imagine new possibilities for sprinkling representation, empathy, solidarity, and peace. For a sneak peek into Jenny’s inspiring journey, read about her prestigious award and mahi with E Tū Whānau: Prestigious award for E Tū Whānau kaimahi Jenny Janif Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

The Pause Is Over: The Hello Frequency Season Continues

The Hello Frequency is back :) YAY In this episode, I return to The Hello Frequency after a much-needed pause. Following the passing of my mum in June 2025, I’ve been slowly finding my way back to the conversations I recorded earlier in the year. This season feels like a turning point. A reminder that even in the midst of grief, there is space for growth, healing, and unexpected silver linings. I briefly speak about how loss has been both a burden and a teacher, showing me how to approach myself with more love as well as reflection. Through these stories and voices, I hope to nurture a shared consciousness rooted in empathy, love, compassion, and peace. This episode is my way of honouring both the pain and the light that coexist within us, and of reminding us all that we can still hold onto hope for a kinder, more compassionate world. Remember, in a world where discord echoes loudly, let empathy be our pluriversal language!

Welcome to The Hello Frequency, My Dear Listeners. I am your host, Caya. Post Recording Note on 28/11/2024I am dedicating this last episode of 2024 to the Late Mr. M. H. Cegu Isadeen. To me, he was Haz'a papa. I still remember the day I met him, either in 2017 or 2018. He welcomed me with his spirituality. Everything about him was different-the rocky area he lived in, an open-air theatre or gathering place made of rock formation, a pond, humble belongings, the list goes on. Thank you for all you have done during your time on Earth, Mr. Isadeen. You will be missed. Citation: Divakalala, C. (2024). This episode delves into the journey of developing empathy for oneself, questioning how empathy differs from people-pleasing, and the importance of recognising empathy as something grounded within rather than seeking validation externally. Together, we examine patience, self-compassion, and the clarity that silence can bring as we reconstruct the gendered and racialised nuances often embedded in empathy. We also engage in critical reflections on the foundations of tikanga (values and principles) and discuss how empathy, rooted in pauses and silence, allows us to connect deeply with ourselves and others. Topics include managing the time we dedicate to community while ensuring self-care, rebuilding authentic principles, and understanding the courage required to embrace empathy with awareness. We touch on how anxiety can be a persistent presence, and how self-preservation can manifest in silence, guiding us to listen more closely to ourselves and act from a place of inner clarity.Ultimately, this conversation invites you to approach empathy with intentionality and courage, balancing aroha for others with aroha for yourself.#HowDoIDevelopEmpathyForMyOwnSelf #TheDifferenceBetweenEmpathyAndPeoplePleasingBehaviours #EmpathyIsNotAboutSeekingValidationFromOthers #HavingPatienceForMyself #SelfCompassion #TheClarityInSilence #QuestioningDeconstructingAndReconstructingGenderedAspectsOfEmpathy #CriticalThinkingIsRequiredToUnpackEmpathy #CriticalReflectionsOnWhatGroundsUsAndWhyWeDoThingsLikeEmpathising #BringMeaningsThatMakeSenseToYouAuthentically #DrivenByAuthenticPurposesThatMakesSenseToMe #RebuildingPrinciplesThatAreAuthenticToYourself #HowDoIManageTimeForMyCommunityWhileNotNeglectingTimeNeededForSelfcare #Aroha #TheFoundationsOfTikanga #EmpathyinThePowerOfPauses #ThePowerOfWhatWeCanHearInSilence #EnhanceTheAbilityToListenToMyself #AnxietyIsTheStubbornLoverThatNeverLeaves #SelfPreservationInSilence #EmpathyWithAwarenessIsACourageousAct Citation© Divakalala, C & Rio, A. Empathy Over Competitiveness: A New Approach to Solidarity

The Hello Frequency Podcast acknowledges the Tainui people of the Waikato region, where it was recorded. Respects to elders past, present, and emerging. Welcome to The Hello Frequency, My Dear Listeners: I am your host, Caya. In this thought-provoking episode, Kyle and I explore the intricate weaving of Kotahitanga, where unity is forged through an appreciation of diverse backgrounds, the powerful narratives of queer people of colour, and celebrations of resilience and pride. We discuss the transformative potential of empathy over competitiveness in fostering genuine solidarity and the importance of understanding Tangata Whenua in the context of Aotearoa. Empathy is one of the foundational practices in building meaningful and horizontal solidarities, emphasising collaboration over competition, and supporting each other’s journeys beyond the apparent power relationships that exist in the intersections. We also discuss the need to bridge cultural gaps by seeking more information and breaking down barriers through effective cross-cultural communication, we aim to highlight the significance of building genuine, empathetic, and respectful relationships that transcend rigid practices and foster a deeper sense of togetherness.   #Kotahitanga #Unity #Togetherness #Solidarity #PeopleOfColour #QueerPeopleOfColour #FindingsWaysToEmpathiseBeyondTheLimitationsDueToRigidPractices #EmpathyOverCompetitiveness #UnderstandingTangataWhenua #TangataTiriti #BuildingGenuineRelationships #CrossCulturalCommunicationsAndUnderstandings #ListenNow #HappyListening🌟🎙️🌱🌍💖 Copyright and Citation© Divakalala, C. Connecting Through Spirituality: Insights from Filipino and Islamic Traditions

The Hello Frequency Podcast acknowledges the Tainui people of the Waikato region, where it was recorded. Respects to elders past, present, and emerging. In this heartfelt episode, I welcome back Rafiqah for the second time to delve deeper into the realms of spirituality and empathy. Drawing from her rich Filipino and Islamic heritage, Rafiqah shares profound insights on how understanding empathy through a spiritual lens can deepen our connections with others. We explore concepts like Pwera Usog, Tabi Tabi Po, Lamang Lupa, Diwata, Sadaqah, and Zakat, and how these traditions shape her worldviews and how she connects with others and nurtures relationships in and with solidarity. I also share my experiences and reflections, highlighting the similarities between these concepts and the non-organised, indigenous Hindu philosophies that resonate with me. This episode feels like a true collaboration, and I am deeply grateful to Rafiqah for sharing this platform with me. Her positive words about my podcast, a passion project that nourishes my life and, as the comments suggest, many others as well, mean the world to me. Join us as we listen to the hello frequency again and again ;), and embark on a journey of spiritual understanding and empathy. Rafiqah generously shared the following description to help us better understand the concepts discussed in this episode. Salamat po, Rafiqah! You are a wonderful soul💖 Pwera usog: is a belief to counter bad elements/spirits, essentially a shield against bad intentions through hexes. Babies are often the targets of bad elements so it has become a norm to say that to infants. Tabi tabi po: meaning “excuse me” or “may I please pass?". You say this in the forest or natural area, incase that you accidentally step on a duwende (dwarf), engkanto (elemental) or any one of the many beings inhabiting the forest. It's the ultimate sign of respect for the natural and spiritual world. Lamang lupa: beings that inhabit the earth. Diwata: Nature spirits or faeries. Coming from the Sanskrit phrase "Devata" meaning “goddess.”  Beng are a Mende ethnic group from the Ivory Coast, also known as Côte d'Ivoire. Jinn: According to Islam are any of a class of spirits lower than the angels. Capable of appearing in human and animal forms and influencing humankind for either good or evil. Lihi: While is a condition of pregnancy food craving. Lihí also encompasses a folk belief that whatever a woman craves during pregnancy will imprint characteristics on the child. This concept reminds us about protecting and caring for pregnant women and people. Sadaqah: In Islam, these are voluntary acts of charity that showcase generosity, love and compassion guided by faith. Whether giving a hug, a compliment food, or donations. Sadaqah can be either small or big. There is no compulsion. Zakat: An obligatory act of charity. Mandated as one of the five pillars of Islam. Focuses on compassion as well as giving to the needy. It's like almsgiving, often collected by the Muslim Ummah (community). Kulam: While associated with black magic, it's also a form of hexing rather than cursing (sumpa). Connects to the ideas of retribution and justice through a Filipino spiritual lens. In an unjust society, Kulam can be used as a defence mechanism. Mystical creatures ( kapre,  Tyanak,  Aswang/ Managgal) serve a purpose in Filipino society to remind people of the importance of sticking together and looking out for one another and the importance of respecting, protecting, and maintaining a positive relationship with the environment. Our shared advocacy work aims to uplift marginalised sections of Aotearoa society. Rafiqah brings profound insights based on the following concepts interconnected with empathy:Pakikiramay (sympathy/condolences)Makikipagkapwa-tao (shared humanity)Pakikisama (getting along with each other)Utang na loob (debt of gratitude)We also discuss empathy as a double-edged sword, where it can be taken for granted and used to patronise those who are less powerful. I am delighted to share this episode, which I believe will positively influence you. As we navigate one of the challenging times in Aotearoa’s history, especially for former refugees and people of colour migrant communities, I recognise that nurturing empathy, exploring connections, and spreading love and light through this platform may not be accessible to everyone. Respects to elders, past, present, and emerging. Welcome to The Hello Frequency, I am your host, Caya. This is Episode 5: Vinod Bal: Moving Forward with Empathy   Dear Listeners, I apologise if my voice sounds nasal. I have been feeling under the weather lately. It is with great honour that I present to you a conversation with Vinod Bal. Our paths crossed in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, in the breathtaking land of Aotearoa New Zealand. As a newcomer to this country, I found solace in Vinod’s friendship. His family embraced me wholeheartedly. He was my first person of colour and queer friend, and our friendship has been evolving since then. Our friendship defies generational gaps and other differences. We connect over shared queer politics, a passion for community-driven advocacy, and our love for hiking, long walks, and exploring delightful restaurants. Indian cuisine consistently tops our list – mirroring its dominance in the subcontinent. Ha ha ha. In our conversation today, Vinod sheds light on an important statistic. Despite this vibrant community, we continue to face challenges. Access to culturally sensitive services and equitable opportunities remain a work in progress.Together, within a year of our friendship, Vinod and I co-founded the Charitable Trust, Adhikaar Aotearoa. If you are curious about our work, there is a link to our website and social media handles in the description. Adhikaar Aotearoa continues to grow with more trustees, community members, allies, and meaningful work since its inception. I am thrilled to have yet another queer soul with whom I can engage in inspiring conversations about anything and everything. Our exchanges ripple through many lives, shaping them in ways we may not even realise. Here is an example: recording of our conversation.  Thank you for tuning into “The Hello Frequency”. The Power of Connecting Continents

Welcome to The Hello Frequency, Dear Listeners: I am your host, Caya and this is episode 4.  Please be advised that this podcast mentions about war, violence, and their impacts. If you find these subjects distressing, please exercise caution while listening. Take care. My deep gratitude to my listeners, followers, and subscribers. A special thanks to those of you who have shared my podcast with others and taken the time to rate it. Your generosity continues to strengthen my sense of hope and connection. I keep you all in my daily meditations and spiritual prayers. Intersectionality—a word that carries within it the weight of countless lives, non-living beings, histories, struggles, and places among many others. Before it was coined, before it adorned academic papers and activist manifestos, it was weaved into the very fabric of existence of all forms. It was the air we breathed, the ground we walked upon—a mosaic of identities, woven together in intricate patterns. Picture this: a girl, often dressed as a boy, seeking answers amidst the war-ravaged lands of Northern Lanka. She defied conventions and danced on the tightrope between expectations driven by rigid norms and desires. Others called her by boy pronouns, teasingly, but she revelled in it. It was a secret rebellion, a whispered defiance against a world that sought to confine her. I was that girl, observing the intricate dance between privilege and scarcity, often existing on the margins. Again, I am sure many of you can relate to this. My goal is to spread empathy, solidarity, love, compassion, light, peace, harmony, and positive energy in all forms, shapes, colours, and sizes. It comes from a place of having experienced and benefited from the power of connecting continents. Copyright and Citation  © Divakalala, C. (2024). The Power of Connecting Continents.
