Unexpected Rewards in my Life - 13th Sunday
(73) 13th Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhen have I been rewarded for doing the right thing, when I didn’t expect a reward? What is the rock and hard place that I’m in (or have been in?) In the Bible there are seven stories of barren women: three of the four matriarchs, Sarah (Genesis 11:30), Rebekah (25:21), and Rachel (29:31); Hannah, mother of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1-2); the anonymous wife of Manoah, mother of Samson (Judges 13); and the “great woman of Shunem,” also called the Shunammite, an acolyte of the prophet Elisha and Elizabeth. In the Bible, barrenness refers to the physical inability to conceive, but spiritually, it symbolizes a woman who experiences waiting, disgrace, and unrequited longing. To be a barren woman is to be forced to wait for a deliverance that only the Lord can provide. It is a powerful metaphor. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed - 12th Sunday
(72) 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time"What is something in my life that was concealed, then later revealed?""How have I been tested by God?""How have I been betrayed?"Spiritual bypassing is a term coined by John Welwood. “Although most of us were sincerely trying to work on ourselves, I noticed a widespread tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks." When we are spiritually bypassing, we often use the goal of awakening or liberation to rationalize what I call premature transcendence: trying to rise above the raw and messy side of our humanness before we have fully faced and made peace with it. And then we tend to use absolute truth to disparage or dismiss relative human needs, feelings, psychological problems, relational difficulties, and developmental deficits. I see this as an “occupational hazard” of the spiritual path...."This great graphic and more on this topic can be found at https://members.soulsandhearts.com/blog/spiritual-bypassing-catholic-style In Maya cosmology and healing tradition, the womb is not merely a reproductive organ but a sacred seat of life, power, and spiritual connection. It is central to the cycles of birth, fertility, and transformation, and is deeply intertwined with the Maya worldview.Sacred and Spiritual RoleThe Maya viewed the womb as the dwelling place of the soul and a conduit to the spiritual realm Ananda. It is linked to the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, often symbolizing a passage from one state to another—pregnancy, for example, was sometimes described in Nahuatl (related to Maya culture) with words rooted in death, signifying a transformation Yucatán Magazine. Imploding Exploding Images of God
(71) How have your experience and beliefs about God changed? We share the mic with Chelley Gardner-Smith. Thank you Chelly!Saint Simeon Stylites (circa 390–459 AD), the famous Syrian Christian ascetic who lived for 37 years atop a pillar. He pioneered a unique form of asceticism known as the stylites (from the Greek word stylos, meaning "pillar"). To escape the massive crowds of pilgrims and followers seeking his counsel, he retreated to a small platform on top of a giant column in the Syrian desert, living there until his death. God as Food - Corpus Christi - June 7
(70) What has feed me? Where has manna come from when i didn't expect it?The historical ritual or concept of "eating God"—known anthropologically and psychologically as theophagy—isa widespread cross-cultural archetype.Torah as Bread: In rabbinic literature, the Torah is explicitly called the true bread of life. The Aztec Sacrament of TeocualoOne of the most striking, highly documented non-Christian historical examples of theophagy comes fromthe Aztecs, who practiced a ritual literally called Teocualo, meaning god-eating.The Tzoalli Statues: Prior to major festivals honoring deities like Huitzilopochtli (the sun and war god) or Ometochtli (the pulque god), priests molded human-sized statues of the god using ground amaranth seeds, toasted maize, and honey or human sacrificial blood. The Ritual Execution: The statue was treated as a living entity. At the climax of the ceremony, priests performed a symbolic sacrifice, killing the dough statue by driving a wooden stake or flint knife through its heart.Distribution to the Public: The statue was then broken into small pieces and distributed to the entire community, starting with the rulers and warriors down to commoners. The Dance of God in my Life - Trinity Sunday - May 31, 2026
(69) Our Question: How do I experience the reality of "The Trinity" in my daily life? The Greek word translated believe is pisteuō (πιστεύω). And it carries a much richer meaning than simple mental agreement. It means to trust, rely upon, entrust oneself to, and align one’s life with someone. And from Marcus Borg - Thus in John, this verse is not about believing a set of statements about Jesus now for the sake of heaven later. It is about beloving Jesus and beloving God as known in Jesus, in the incarnation, and entering into "the life of the age to come" now. It is not about people going to hell because they don't believe. It is about the path into life with God now. Full article here. On Fire with God - Pentecost - May 24, 2026
(68) Pentecost – Our question: When have I had a "fiery" experience of God? Marci is in a singing mood. Laura offers a quote from Marcus Borg: Before Christianity became the civil religion of Rome in 337 CE, to name Jesus as Lord was to challenge the empire. It was a revolutionary statement. The “proclamation of Jesus as Son of God, Lord, and Savior directly countered Roman Imperial theology…. Jesus was Lord and the emperor was not! “Jesus is Lord” was high treason!… (The )message challenged the normalcy of civilization, then and now, with an alternative vision of how life on earth can and should be. “Jesus is Lord” offers fundamental opposition… Who is our Lord: Jesus or an empire? Jesus Christ as Lord led to resistance to the imperial vision, and advocacy of a different vision of the way the world can be”. (Marcus Borg- The First Paul) We both share some of our interpersonal challenges and explore the idea of “being one Body” and what that means in daily life and how does that relate to having healthy boundaries. The Angels Say, "Stop Looking Up." (Look Within)
(67) Ascension Sunday. Our Question: How do I experience God?Join us today for our lengthy discussion of the story of the Ascension. What do you make of it?We struggle with the second reading and the Gospel. After our recording Laura found this great quote from Richard Rohr re: the "Great Commision" at the end of Matthew's gospel. In our discussion Marci got us there anyway but it would have been nice to have had this then! " If I wanted to create a great people, what I’ve got to do is get them outside of their country, their religion, their nationality, by saying: “Go give the message to everybody else,” and then you will find yourself converted by the people you thought you were supposed to convert. Inner and Outer Journeys - Miracles, Suffering, Charisms
(66) The 6th Sunday of Easter. Our question: What has been a miracle in my life? Laura shares some insights from her recent trip to Turkey - the "second Holy Land." We talk about charismatic leaders and our openness to religious ecstacy. We offer several quotes by Rumi and St. Julian of Norwich, and explore the tradition of the mystics -- intimacy with the divine. Marci Madary offered this quote from MLK Jr. "All I'm saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated, that somehow we're caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality."From excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr’s speech at Western Michigan University, 18 December 1963https://libguides.wmich.edu/mlkatwmu/speechRumi quote - “Take the famous utterance, "I am God." Some people think this is a great pretension, but "I am God" is in fact a great humility. Those who say, instead, "I am a servant of God" believe that two exist, themselves and God. But those who say, "I am God" have become nothing and have cast themselves to the winds. They say, "I am God" meaning, "I am not, God is all. There is no existence but God. I have lost all separation. I am nothing." In this the humility is greater. The Sunday ReadingsThank you for listening! Poems, Proposals, Process – The Church Moves Forward
5th Sunday easter - We begin with a poem by Lynn Unger. Our question: What is a memory I have of visiting a spiritual dwelling? Do I have a memoryof visiting one from another spiritual tradition? We read of complaints to early church leaders and imagineour “complaints” today. We talk about the paradox of stones, and note that it is one of the archetypes of the Self. If we were going to create a new lectionary, what other readings might we add? Marci names poets: Joy Hardjoe, Maya Angelou, Mary Oliver, or Tracy K Smith. Quoted in this episode - from Alfred North Whitehead's Religion in the Making."A system of dogmas may be the ark within which the Church floats safely down the flood tide of history. But the Church will perish unless it opens its window and lets out the dove to search for an olive branch". Marci talks about the Enneagram. My Doubts and Separateness - 2nd Sunday of Easter
This week we go back to the basics with our question: What am I being saved from?We mention the Corporal acts of mercy We talk about the powerful beginnings of the early church and reflect on the Quaker tradition. "Quaker” was originally an insulting nickname given toFriends in the 1650s, based on a widespread belief in England, where Quakerism began, that in their worship, when under the influence of the Holy Spirit (or perhaps evil spirits, depending on one‘s point of view), Friends would shakeand quake. We explore separateness and losing our separation from each other and recall Robert Frost's opinion that, "good fences make good neighbors." We wonder - is salvation “being saved from our seperateness?"We wonder if Thomas' doubts are actually a very active form of seeking God. The Sunday ReadingsThank you for listening! Our question: When or how have I come back from "death?"We talk about the power of imagination as a necessary part of change. We recall what Fr. Richard Rohr said about Paul's use of the word "flesh" and "spirit.""Paul made a most unfortunate choice of the word sarx, translated “flesh,” as the very enemy of pneuma, Spirit (for example, Galatians 5:16-24). Now we would probably translate sarx as “ego” or “small self,” which would be much closer to Paul’s actual meaning. Remember that Christianity is the religion that believes “the Word became flesh” (John 1:13), and Jesus even returned to the “flesh” after the Resurrection (Luke 24:40)—so flesh cannot be bad. If our spirituality is in any way anti-body.Join the community: Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/laughingmystics/Daily Poetry: Visit Marci’s Blog and subscribe to Laura’s Substack for your daily dose of verse.Share the mic: Send a voice memo to [email protected]Rate/review easily: RateThisPodcast.com/thelaughingmysticsFollow + listen: https://pod.link/1799776273New episodes drop Thursday mornings.More from Marci Madary: https://www.insideoutspirituality.com/More from Laura Lewis-Barr: https://psychescinema.com/Merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/laughing_mystics/products(If your platform hides links, visit the episode webpage or Spotify.) The Blind See - 4th Sunday of Lent
A deep dive into some familiar readings. And many questions. Our first question (based on the readings) : What ritual(s) in my life have brought me sight or a pouring out of the "Spirit of the Lord."We talk about the innocent "youngest one," here as David and also within ourselves as our "inferior function."We ask: where am I asleep in my life? What darkness in myself might I be asleep to? Do I believe when I hear the voice of the Divine? Where am I in this story right now?Join the community: Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/laughingmystics/Poetry: Visit Marci’s Blog and subscribe to Laura’s Substack for your periodic poems.Share the mic: Send a voice memo to [email protected]Rate/review easily: RateThisPodcast.com/thelaughingmysticsFollow + listen: https://pod.link/1799776273New episodes drop Thursday mornings.More from Marci Madary: https://www.insideoutspirituality.com/More from Laura Lewis-Barr: https://psychescinema.com/Merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/laughing_mystics/products(If your platform hides links, visit the episode webpage or Spotify.) The Living Water - 3rd Sunday of Lent
Hold on to your hats as we dip into familiar "waters" and discover big surprises. We start with the questions: What is the Living Water? What is it in my life?Laura mentions the fairy tale, The Water of Life. We also talk about how fairy tales provide a "folk" commentary on Christianity, kind of like a midrash. Others are exploring this idea too. We talk about atonement theory and find helpful quotes from Joseph Campbell and Fr. Rohr. We use the shorter Gospel reading with some added from the longer version. https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/030826.cfmThe Sunday ReadingsJoin the community: Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/laughingmystics/Daily Poetry: Visit Marci’s Blog and subscribe to Laura’s Substack for your daily dose of verse.Share the mic: Send a voice memo to [email protected]/review easily: RateThisPodcast.com/thelaughingmysticsFollow + listen: https://pod.link/1799776273New episodes drop Thursday mornings.More from Marci Madary: https://www.insideoutspirituality.com/More from Laura Lewis-Barr: https://psychescinema.com/Merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/laughing_mystics/products(If your platform hides links, visit the episode webpage or Spotify.) Choosing the Good - February 15, 2026
6th Sunday in extra-ordinary time. Our question: What is an inner stumbling block that gets in the way of making the life-giving choice.?Since we won't be making another Ash Wednesday episode, we invite you to listen to last years episode (scroll down to episode 3)Laura again recommends Michael Meades, The Living Myth, podcast, especially this episode on creative practices. We talk about the mysteries of our life and the mystery genre as a way to explore this. Laura recommends the movie "KnivesOut, Wake up Dead Man."We talk about metaphor and Joseph Campbell. "Metaphors carry us from one place to another, they enable us to cross boundaries that would otherwise be closed to us. Spiritual truths that transcend time and space can only be borne in metaphorical vessels whose meaning is found in their connotations—that is, in the cloud of witnesses to the many sides of truth that they spontaneously evoke—not in their denotations, the hard, factual, uni-dimensional casings of their historical reference."Eugene Kennedy, Ph.D.Campbell, Joseph. Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor[A]s Jung put it in terms that chill me always, “What is denied inwardly will come to us in the outer world, and we call it fate.”~ James Hollis, Living Between Worlds: Finding Personal Resilience in Changing Times.A very challenging gospel reading! The Sunday ReadingsJoin the community: Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/laughingmystics/Daily Poetry: Visit Marci’s Blog and subscribe to Laura’s Substack for your daily dose of verse.Share the mic: Send a voice memo to [email protected]Rate/review easily: RateThisPodcast.com/thelaughingmysticsFollow + listen: https://pod.link/1799776273New episodes drop Thursday mornings.More from Marci Madary: https://www.insideoutspirituality.com/More from Laura Lewis-Barr: https://psychescinema.com/Merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/laughing_mystics/products(If your platform hides links, visit the episode webpage or Spotify.) Wholeness, Holiness, and Family - December 28, 2025
The Feast of the Holy Family. We gear up for some challenging readings. We start with asking for a memory of honoring family. (We also acknowledge that sometimes honoring family is best from a distance. )We explore the biblical instructions to "obey" or to "be submissive" and the revolutionary message that was implicit in these readings - based on the world at the time. We mention the elderly "nuns on the run," recently in the news, who challenged such orders. We discuss symbolic meanings of Egypt and our own inner Herods. Virgin Mind and Heart - 4th Sunday of Advent - December 21, 2025
Our question: What is being conceived in me, my inner self, right now? Re: the first reading - Ahaz was the twelfth king of Judah, reigning in Jerusalem from approximately 732 to 716 BC. He is often remembered for his idolatrous practices and political alliances that led Judah away from the worship of YahwehAlso, in Hebrew, 'almah (עַלְמָה) primarily means a young woman, maiden, or girl of marriageable age, implying she is youthful and potentially unmarried, but not exclusively a virgin. We explore the metaphor of a "virgin mindset" and what gets in the way of being open to the divine? How is God being birthed in me? Laura mentions the apocryphal story of the birth of Melchizedek.Quotes from Fr. Richard Rohr here and here. Sunday ReadingsThank you for listening! Eyes see, ears hear! 3rd Sunday of Advent -December 14, 2025
We start with a gorgeous poem from Marci. Our question is: what is a memory of seeing the splendor, the glory of God? Laura talks about the term Jung used for this – the “numinous” which comes from numinosum – Rudolf Otto’s term (in his Idea of the Holy) for the inexpressible, mysterious, terrifying, directly experienced and pertaining only to the divinity.Marci mentions experiments of putting monitors on plants and recording their “song.” We explore how dreamwork can help bring sight to my own psychological/spiritual blindness. Laura mentions the Jungian Marie Louise Von Franz and the I Ching, a symbolic tool for understanding the flow of life. Stay Awake! First Sunday of Advent - November 30, 2025
Season Two! First Sunday of Advent. Our question: What helps me stay awake or what puts me to sleep spiritually/psychologically? Marci recommends the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor, and quotes Anthony De Mello.A quote from Parker Palmer, via Fr. Rohr."Thomas Merton claimed that “There is in all visible things … a hidden wholeness.” But back in the human world—where we are less self-revealing than jack pines—Merton’s words can, at times, sound like wishful thinking. Afraid that our inner light will be extinguished or our inner darkness exposed, we hide our true identities from each other [and] become separated from our own souls. We end up living divided lives, so far removed from the truth we hold within that we cannot know the “integrity that comes from being what you are.”https://cac.org/daily-meditations/wholeness-includes-imperfection/The Sunday ReadingsThank you for listening! Laura also mentions another podcast, including The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill. We explore the power of changing the genders in the second reading. Ep 39 - Feast of All Souls - November 2, 2025
Our question today is: What happens after we die? We talk about heaven and hell, The Day of the Dead and skull faces. We visit Ilia Delio's website for several juicy quotes. Here and here. And also this quote to chew on: " "A person is a center of consciousness expressed in a particular matrix of matter, as if the entire universe (if indeed consciousness is the stuff of the universe) is compacted into this particular material form. In this respect, every person is the universe aware of itself (as Teilhard noted). To put this another way, there is no universe apart from the active centers of personal consciousness; each person is the universe come to self-consciousness." Marci reads Mary Oliver's poem "When Death Comes."Laura reads Teilhard de Chardin's poem, "Aging/Dying Prayer" There are two different reading options for the second reading and the gospel. Ep 31 - Temptation - 23rd Sunday - September 7, 2025
23rd Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now time. Lots of laughter as we tackle some very tough readings. We ask ourselves (and you) this question: "What tempts me in my daily life? What is hard for me to renounce or let go of?" "If it is true that the ability to be puzzled is the beginningof wisdom, then this truth is a sad commentary on the wisdom of modern man. Whatever the merits of our high degree of literary and universal education, wehave lost the gift for being puzzled." ----Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm We mention this quote from Thomas Merton: “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”Laura was searching for this this part of Rumi's poem, The Great Wagon."Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there." Laura quotes Erich Neumann on a provocative message in the Psyche and Eros mythMarci tells the story of St. Francis, his father, and the Bishop. EP 30 - Humility - 22nd Sunday - August 31, 2025
22nd Sunday in The Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time. We explore the Hebrew word for humility.Excerpts quoted from this site. “How am I using the Divine gifts that have been given to me? Am I reaching my own potential for greatness?”This sentiment is powerfully encapsulated in the Hebrew word for humility, anavah. While the English word humility originates from the Latin, humilis, meaning meekness or lowliness, anavah stems from the word anu, meaning “to respond.”Also found this lovely quote related to this concept. “Every person should have two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘I am but dust and ashes.’ When one is feeling too proud, reach into this pocket and take out this paper and read it. In the other pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘For my sake was the world created.’ When one is feeling disheartened and lowly, reach into this pocket and take this paper out and read it. We are each the joining of two worlds. We are fashioned from clay, but our spirit is the breath of Adonai.”(Tales of The Hasidim Later Masters, Martin Buber, p.249-50)Marci uses the word theophonies -a visible manifestation to humankind of God or a god."the great theophany of Sinai"The Sunday ReadingsThank you for listening!
