Intimate Partner Violence Pt2 Featuring Nyarai Chidemo
As we close out the month of March, we continue a very important conversation.Last week, we opened the door to a powerful and necessary discussion on intimate partner violence IPV. We explored the silent nature of this issue, thedynamics of power and control, and the sobering statistics that remind us just how widespread it truly is. Intimate partner violence is complex. It goes deeper than what we see and far too often, it remains misunderstood and overlooked.IPV remains a pervasive global issue with high, and in some regions increasing, rates as of late 2025 and early 2026. Roughly 1 in 3 (30%) women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual IPV in their lifetime. So today, we take the conversation further. We’re honored to welcome back Nyarai Chidemo of the Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham, joining us once again to help unpack the deeper layers of this issue, bringing clarity, insight, and a voice to those who may still be suffering in silence.

Intimate Partner Violence -IPV
Coercive control is a pattern of behavior that focuses on power and control within an intimate relationship, often beginning with psychological and emotional tactics before escalating to physical violence. According to the sources, some of the key signs and red flags include:Social and Physical Isolation: The perpetrator may control who you see and spend time with. They might also discourage or stop you from working or going to school to keep you under their control.Constant Monitoring: This includes tracking your behavior both online and offline, such as questioning who you follow on social media or monitoring your phone to track your movements and travel distances.Gaslighting and Verbal Abuse: Control often involves gaslighting and the use of demeaning comments intended to make you feel "less" or "disgusting". This can also manifest as extreme jealousy, where the partner terrorizes you with accusations or verbal insults.Loss of Autonomy: You may feel as though you cannot say "no" to your partner. The perpetrator might set unrealistic expectations, try to change who you are, or constantly compare you to others to undermine your self-esteem.Economic Control: This can involve controlling your finances, such as taking your wages or preventing you from having any access to your own money.Sexual Coercion: A major sign is forcing sexual activity even when you say no or are not in the mood, which the sources identify as a violation of consent and a form of abuse.Threats and Intimidation: The perpetrator may threaten to leave you or harm you as a means of maintaining control.Weaponizing Children: In some cases, a partner may use children against you by making demeaning comments about you to them, such as telling them you "don't know how to cook" or "don't love them".These behaviors often create a situation where the survivor is living in constant fear and a "survival mode," unable to act freely due to the psychological pressure exerted by their partner.

Long before cassava became a trendy gluten-free flour, it was the lifelineof Indigenous peoples across South America and the Caribbean. Tribes like the Arawak, Carib, and Taino would carefully harvest, grate, and press the cassava root to remove its natural toxins — using a clever tool called the tipiti. What came out of that process became casabe, a round flatbread that could last for months — perfect for travel, trade, and survival. But cassava wasn’t just food — it was culture. It was shared at weddings, used in feasts, and even brewed into cachiri, a fermented drink for celebrations. Nothing went to waste: peels fed animals, starch was used as a natural glue, and leaves became medicine.Listen to the full episode

The immune system - A complex and intelligent network
The immune system is a complex andintelligent network that works around the clock to defend our bodies fromharmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, and toxins. It’s made up of specialized cells, tissues, and organs that all communicate with one another to identify threats and launch the right response, like a well-coordinated security team. What’s truly fascinating is theimmune system’s ability to 'remember' past infections, helping us build immunity over time. However, when it becomes overactive or misdirected, it can mistakenly attack the body’s cells, leading to chronic inflammation or autoimmune conditions.Helping us unravel some of the complexities of this intelligent network is Dr. Charles Waana of Green World Canada, a R&D company that combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with modern scientific technology. Dr. Charles Waana is also a Certified International Trainer in Health and Wellness. He has spent most of his adult life learning about herbalism and other holistic practices. Toxic additives in our foods
No level of exposure to cancer-causing chemicals is safe—less is always better. Cancer affects every community, though some are hit harder than others. It’s the federal government’s duty to protect us from toxic chemicals through proper regulation and bans. Yet, for decades, that oversight has fallen short. While we advocate for stronger protections, we must also take immediate steps to safeguard our health. Until comprehensive regulations are in place, we can protect ourselves by reading ingredient labels carefully and choosing cleaner, healthier options.Listen to a detailed explanation of why we should be cautious about consuming foods with these toxic additives and ingredients:Please send your comments to [email protected] and tell us what you think
