EP 68: Deb Katz on The Art of Coaching
For episode 68 on The School of Unlearning, I sit down with Conscious Leadership & Executive Coach, Deb Katz. Deb brings a wealth of experience, fire and devotion to this series on The Art of Coaching. Deb Katz shared her journey from political activism and anger-driven leadership to presence-based coaching, emphasizing the importance of challenging clients to see beyond their armor and strategies while staying with discomfort. The conversation explored how coaches can develop their "loving challenger" capacity by tracking their own signals and being willing to get it wrong in service of client breakthrough. This episode is for seekers, for coaches, therapists and humans devoted to waking up to their relational "racket". We explore: Deb's early shaping story, including the loss of her mother at age 6. How deb channeled her passion, fire and heartbreak through political activism for much of her early life. Deb shares having the "good fortune" of experiencing heartbreak, periods of unknown and even loss. Deb shares some of her key influential mentors, including Rainbow Hawk and Wind eagle in the late 90's and learned more about the wisdom of nature, consciousness and the intersection of spirit and form. Deb and Elisa explore the journey of individuation in consciousness and within relationships. "It is a revolutionary act to let that which one is be enough"—trusting one's natural design like a tree trusts being a tree. Deb encourages leaders to "eat their shadows" owning how their fear and projections will impact their presence in a room. Deb explores The Upper Limit to resistance and pleasure, how it's biological, and that we create a "cocktail" or stress and love hormones when happy hormones increase. How we use shame and sadness to block access to pleasure and maintain familiar patterns. Signals: Deb urges us to tune into our own signals within the body, and how to use the signal as a way to move with the moment both in coaching and in life. Coaching: Coaches often enter the field wanting to help from the "hero" position on the drama triangle. And, there is a widespread avoidance of discomfort in coaching culture and society at large. Deb shares her love for helping coaches hone their "signal" to detect the client's acrobatics to avoid vulnerability and transformation Loving challenger is explored, more a way to be in communication with the coach's own tracking system, honoring where attention is going and not being committed to being right about the challenge. Deb reminds us all about the mess of being human, the mess of growth, of birth and death and to wade in these waters. Deb and Elisa explore how we use relationships to fortify rackets: people train others how to relate to them in ways that keep their structure intact. (staying connected, staying apart, staying safe etc). "I can't live another day doing this relationship the way I've been doing it"—examining how you've shown up, not using the relationship as scapegoat Deb shares why "widening the aperture" as we explore our aversions/projections is essential to conscious change and conscious leadership in the world. Quotes: "The mind is not the source of suffering, but the uninquired mind" "My job isn't to get it right. My job is just to reflect what I see.” "Shame might be what comes in as your upper limit to pleasure and desire." "I might have to feel some things that make me uncomfortable. But being in devotion to that more than anything else, that's a life of integrity." "Staying with the thread where the activation is, because where the activation is is the way through." EP 63: Centering for Embodied Leadership
Hi friends, this is a special episode dedicated to sharing a powerful somatic tool and practice with you: centering. Centering was created by the founder of The Strozzi Institute, Richard Strozzi-Heckler Phd who brings together 5 decades of studies in eastern and western medicine and healing to his work. Centering is a somatic practice to be present, open, connected to what matters most - it begs us to awaken from the trance of life and access our embodied imagination and build capacity and welcome whatever arises. Timestamps: Introduction, attribution and lineage: 0:00:-5:52: Centering practice: 5:52-16:36 16:37: debriefing and application of this practice Length: our length, from toes to head and up the spine, represents our dignity. Our dignity is not something we have to earn or effort for, it's something we are born with. Width: our width from the edges of our bodies, from left food to right foot, represents our belonging. Centering in our width also invites us to consider our collective belonging. Depth: The third dimension we center in is our depth, or our safety. Our depth is found in the belly, the pelvic region and sacrum. Feel into and even visualize all the systems in place within your body that keep you safe. Back body: your back body, found in your shoulder blades, sacrum, heels represents your history, and all of those who have shaped, loved, informed your journey. Your back body also holds the former versions of yourself and you can presence everyone you love behind you. Front body: your front body represents your present and all that you long to move towards. Throughout this centering practice, notice the sensations, emotions, thoughts, images, memories or thoughts that arise through you. Leading from center opens a doorway to the realms of intuition, perception and expression. As you get experience being led through the center, ask yourself what is possible if you are able to return to your dignity line, belonging and safety throughout the day? How would your actions and experiences shift? Dr. Sarah Coxon on Relationship to Our Soma
Today’s episode is the fourth in a five part series on relationships and we sit down with Somatic Coach and Practitioner, Sarah Coxon. Sarah connects the dots between her first love, archeology and the work she does now to help people reclaim their power through somatic practices. Our conversation traverses many spaces, and brings us all closer to understanding, and feeling empowered about the healing path. Unlike many practitioners, Sarah doesn’t hyperfocus on the trauma, instead, she uses practices and present moment awareness to address what is here now. Sarah offers us gem after gem and posits that perhaps moving toward joy and aliveness can be a powerful pathway to healing. How Sarah’s background in archeology has shaped her worldview, and how it influences her work in Somatic Coaching The link between nature and our own internal growth and healing Sarah connects the dots for us on how our leaps in technology have surpassed our own biological and psychological capacities to handle them Context in archeology is foundational, we are always looking at the context to understand a finding or a pattern in history and Sarah helps us see this through the lens of Somatic Coaching Sarah reveals how our lack of curiosity, largely influenced by our need to know and technology, has impacted our capacity to think, feel and stay connected. Sarah shares her insights on her evolution in coaching which started 8 years ago and how she thinks of her role now in holding space for whatever wants to be felt/seen/expressed now Sarah uses a beautiful metaphor of embracing the tidal rhythms of life through grief and other complex emotions How culture doesn’t teach self-trust, how early on we are told to trust authorities and this can lead to disembodiment and lack of inner knowing and trust How attunement is a muscle we must deepen for our relationships, and how it begins with our bodies and going slower than we think we need to Elisa and Sarah discuss that even leaders feel fear and disempowerment and the sooner we can develop empathy for their experience, the closer we get to a more connected workforce To learn more about sarah and her podcast, books and offerings, visit www.drsarahcoxon.com and follow her at www.instagram.com/drsarahcoxon Elisa Haggarty is a Conscious Leadership Coach who works with executives and teams to shift the way people relate and collaborate through radical responsibility, curiosity and emotional intelligence. Megan Liebmann-Gudat on Relationship to Rituals and Nature
In episode 55 on The School of Unlearning podcast, the theme of relationships is explored as it relates to rituals and physical spaces in nature. This conversation builds on a five part relationship focus and grounds us back in our bodies and in to the natural world around us as we find our center and slow our pace down, all in the effort to be more attuned to our needs and those around us. Our guest is Functional Medicine Practitioner and Clinical Herbalist Educator and Practitioner, Megan Liebmann-Gudat. Megan specializes in helping women in the peri-menopause and menopause stages of life and health through dietary, lifestyle and mindset approaches. In this podcast, we discuss: How to zoom out of the singular obsession of romantic relationships and move into a broader view of how to manifest love in life. Elisa and Megan discuss why the “eradicate” approach with chronic health conditions isn’t working or healing. Megan shares how our dialogue with our symptoms and ailments is foundational and the most powerful way to embark on a healing path. Megan asks us to invite a conversation with our symptoms to the table? How we can match our environment with our biology and what this does for our health. Relationship to space: Megan highlights how we can cultivate trust to a space, which she says is often one of our first relationships. Megan introduces a “sits spot” which is a space she brings her children to a few times a year to notice seasonal changes and shifts in the terrain. We cover what an “access point” is in healthcare and how knowing where to begin is maybe the most important thing. Pacing and our relationship to slowness help improve our ability to be present and notice what is arising. Top 10 Takeaways: When dealing with chronic health conditions, move beyond “eradication” and dip into curiosity and conversation with the condition and it’s symptoms. Being in relationship to the healing is more important than the protocol itself. Our first relationship to trust is often our relationship with a physical space, a home. A powerful way to be in relationship with physical spaces is to do what Megan calls a “sits spot” is an activity of mindfulness and noticing. Find one spot in nature and sit with it as the seasons change, draw and document what changes. One way to mitigate the feeling of loneliness is to integrate other ways of bringing spiritual practices in, starting with nature or outdoor spaces. Realizing that we are not in fact alone. Megan reminds us that we can’t speed up nature, so making a practice of keeping seasonal journal for your surrounding environment is a powerful way to bring presence into your life. This practice slows us down. Take what you think you can do and divide it in two and take what you think you need and times it by 3. Megan on embracing slowness: a major theme from all of the relationship podcasts so far has been pacing. And, Megan doubles down on how our pacing impacts our ability to connection. Attunement matters when we consider how to shift our relationship to health, and this begins with a slowing down. Access point is everything for practitioners of health and change. And, the access point is figuring out where the person is willing to shift, and that begins the great conversation and practice of healing. Kristen Lisanti on Our Relationship To Change
Today’s episode is the second in a five part series on relationships. Our guest and thought partner in this conversation is Kristen Lisanti who coaches and trains transformational leaders. After 20 years of cultivating healthy, high-performing cultures in organizations around the world, she now builds the capabilities of her clients to do the same. Kristen hosts Radiant Leader, a community of practice for transformational leaders, and immersive leadership development retreats and programs, including her mindful leadership cohort, Momentum. She lives outside New York City. This is one of my favorite conversations on the podcast yet - and it’s an exploration of the human experience and the beauty of how our work can be fuel for our growth - and that in seeing work and career evolution as a pathway towards personal ascension and radical acceptance, we are never not in learning mode. Kristen walks us through her new framework for the 3 traps that keep leaders stuck in transitional leadership and how we use attunement and self-awareness to avoid these traps and step into the dynamic conversation of transformational leadership. Top 10 Take aways: We exist in relationship to one another - we are always interbeing and interbecoming. We do not change other people. The only thing we can do is work on and within ourselves. The 3 traps of transactional leadership are 1. The Compliant Trap. 2. The Controlling Trap and 3. The Knowing Trap. Transformational leadership has nothing to do with your role or seniority and everything to do with relating to a purposeful vision and creating conditions for the team to achieve that vision. Attuning ourselves and the people around us is essential for transformational leadership. Change is not a sprint. Change is not a marathon. Change is infinite. The case for efficiency and effectiveness is slowing down. “Perfectionism is not perfection. Perfect is not a thing. Completeness is not a thing. Everything is always iterating and evolving forever.” STOP, a classic mindfulness practice helps us move away from reactivity and creates space - in turn, opening us up the option of choice. Check in with yourself - are you in a story that you didn’t write? Jordan Dann On Rupture & Repair in Relationships
This is the first episode in a five part series on relationships and we begin with an in depth look at relational rupture & repair with Somatic Therapist and Relational Psychotherapist, Jordan Dann. "The best thing we get to do on this planet is be in relationship. And it’s the only thing we aren’t taught how to do.” Jordan Dann Covering a wide array of topics and tools within rupture & repair, Jordan Dann provides insight into attainment, slowing down, the role of a therapist and client - and how we can begin to reimagine conflict as not a barrier, but as a bridge to connection. Here are the top 10 take aways from this beautifully insightful conversation: Attunement begins with being present. Most people’s idea of slow is still really fast. Going slower, at quarter speed at any activity, opens up the landscape of choice. A bid is a reach for connection. When we miss bids of attention, this is when ruptures occur. The Gottmans say that couples who are masterful at rupture and repair cycles, have 80% satisfaction and wellbeing in their relationships. "You have to allow the repair to be a singular event, and not another log on the bonfire of resentment. Your reception and “thank you” and being able to fully let it go and move forward is as important as saying, 'I’m sorry.'" Jordan Dann Our attachment system is really forgiving. Ed Tronick cites in his research that we only need to be in attunement 20-30% of the time. Our attachment system is really forgiving in that respect. All conflict is in essence, an objection over difference. "Until you understand what's running the show, you aren’t running the show, your unconscious is. Explore the enmeshment of your origin family and how a lack of differentiation is impacting your ruptures." Jordan Dann BRING play and laughter more into the rupture and repair cycle: couples lay down on the ground while arguing, it helps de escalate the issue. When repairs go well, we can celebrate with each other. This is how you create a story about how you fight, if you celebrate and review the success of it. We need models of health relationships, of ones who have ruptures and repair. We spend far too much time commiserating vs seeking out and being with others who repair well. Specific appreciation is essential. And in order to be specific, we must be present and attuned. Back In The Game & A Preview of What's To Come
A solo episode with Elisa who shares her insights and own unlearning about running a podcast. You'll hear a review of top quotes from guests and also a preview of what is to come with a new series on Relationships coming soon. “I am unlearning that I always know in the moment what is good or bad. The present is always changing our stories about the past. We have the ability to change the past because we have a different relationship with it, based on our present day." Connor Carrick, Episode 1 “Unlearning is the ultimate act of humility for me. It is the surrender to the fact that everything and everyone is a teacher, and everyone and everything is a student.” Claude Silver, Episode 15 "What I feel when I hear the word unlearning, I feel a relief, a softening, a permission. And, what I think about it is that if we have some intact culture and some experience at all with elder-hood, and what it may be to be near someone who are true elders, or many people or who are true elders, there wouldn’t be so much we have to unlearn, we could trust the learning that we did." Kimberly Ann Johnson, Episode 22 "Unlearning in degrees matters." Kate Fagan And, Elisa previews an upcoming episode with Jordan Dann which will be released on June 13th. EP 36: Living on Purpose with Amy Wong
This episode is for anyone who is feeling a sense of unrest or dissatisfaction with their life and who wants to find more joy and meaning. Amy helps us break down why we desire what we desire, what actually drives us to pursue our goals and what key questions we can ask along the way to make sure we are living on purpose. A favorite part about our today was the nuance that Amy’s work brings to self help and self development. That our greatest learnings and times of growth come when we contract and rumble with hard things - and how we can use that data to better direct our next steps. Amy helps us understand why “should” is a word that potentially carries a lot of heavy energy, riddled with guilt and tension. This episode is HIGH energy, riddled with insights and really really human. In this episode, you will learn: Amy's early influences that inspired her into the realm of consciousness and spirituality How Amy defines "living on purpose" The pivotal moments that helped Amy move towards being a spiritual being having a human experience How the constant need to control our conditions leads to "efforting" which can be draining and lead to burnout How to reframe goals, that milestones can be helpful but the feeling of what we believe we want is always most important Amy encourages us to "think as far as it feels good" and then come back to the moment. What it means to embrace Amy's mantra of "feel it out, don't figure it out!" Amy recommends us to "map our desired feeling state" Amy encourages to strengthen our body/mind awareness - even the states of constriction as it provides great data for what we want and don't want. "Accept it all" The more we can learn into contraction, the more we can sit with it and also use this state to learn and grow. What Amy feels is one of the worst/most dramatic words is! Inner critic? EP 34: Linda Babcock On Empowering Women To Embrace The Power of No In The Workplace
Today I sit down with behavioral economist, professor and author, Linda Babcock to discuss the power of saying no for women at work. This podcast interview is for any woman in the workplace who feels stretched thin, frustrated by a lack of advancement in their career and afraid to say no. If you are an organizational leader, this podcast will help you understand how to strategically use your greatest resource by shifting how you allocate and reward non-promotical tasks. We discuss what an NPT or non-promotable task is, and why women are 50% more likely to volunteer for work that doesn’t advance their career. Linda and her co-authors propose tactical and strategic ways we can empower women in all positions to advocate for their needs by doing an inventory of how they spend their time, understanding the currency their company thrives on and embracing strategies to make sure they spend their time doing work that aligns with their skills and also helps advance their role in the workplace. Linda’s work is focused on understanding barriers to women’s advancement in the workplace and developing evidence-based interventions to promote a level playing field. She is the founder and director of the Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society (PROGRESS), which pursues positive social change for women and girls through education, partnerships, and research. Linda is the James M. Walton Professor in Economics at Carnegie Mellon University and the author of Ask for It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want and Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide. “The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead End Work” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and wherever books are sold. To learn more, visit https://www.thenoclub.com In this episode, you will learn: What impacts the bottom line is business is how we spend out time Why companies would benefit from developing their people and the core soft skills What a non-promotable task (NPT) is and how it drains a woman’s capacity to advance her career Helpful tactics to understand how to say no, or even say “yes, and…” The power of the pause before making decisions How not staying in our zone of genius or even competencies is an energy drain for the employee and the organization 70% of companies believe that DEI initiatives are critical to business success but only 24% of companies formally recognized DEI initiatives as promotable How female leaders can become more aware and strategic about how they handle personal decisions How leaders can begin to pay attention to what a “Yes” feels like and how that is the foundation for being more responsible with human resources and time. How understanding non-promotable tasks and doing an inventory of how we spend out time is very visible and further supports our capacity to direct career advancement. How real change happens when organizations shift how they allocate and reward work ________________ Elisa Haggarty is a Conscious Leadership Coach and host of The School of Unlearning Podcast. EP 25: Terri Trespicio on Unfollowing Your Passion
On episode 25 for The School of Unlearning podcast, we are joined by author and entrepreneur, Terri Trespicio. Terri's new book, "Unfollow Your Passion" is a provocative inquiry into some of life's common assumptions. This podcast is filled with moments of unlearning about relationships, how we blindly inherent narratives that don't serve us and Terri argues that our best growth comes within our comfort zone, not outside of it. On this podcast you will learn: Who has influenced Terri while she was growing up How comedy has shaped Terri's voice Why Terri maintains she is at her best when she allows for space in failure and growth Disappointing someone isn't the end of the world, seeking to always please is. Why our innate drive for connection leads us to accept things that don't serve us. Why its essential to decide who you will listen to and who you won't. Terri's relationship with saying, "no", and why saying "no" doesn't always needs to come with an explanation. How women have been influenced to always feel they need to be in a relationship, and why it's unfair to feel "less than" if you are single. What a "full body yes" feels like Why getting to a "yes" requires a lot of "no's". Why saying "yes" when you don't need it, it's a recipe for drama. Why drama is expensive in relationships and on teams. Why "discomfort isn't a guarantee for growth, its a condition." Real growth does not come outside of our comfort zone, despite what struggle/hustle culture tells us. Terri urges us to expand our comfort zone so that we can live and work inside it. Passion is an experience, not a state, it's not a talent and we need to stop seeking it all the time. Why our needy pursuit of passion is ironically draining us and largely, diverting us from the joy of living. Terri on unlearning: "When you unlearn, its not a forgetting, its purposeful, learning is the acquisition of knowledge and application in the world, unlearning is amending, its what editing is to writing. Unlearning is the next step of knowledge." Quotes from Terri: “As soon as you start to monetize something in order to legitimize it, you’ve lost it.” "Passion is when energy is moving through you, where can you allow that to happen? “The minute you get fixed and rigid about finding passion in one thing, you’ve killed your own vibe.” "Pay attention to where industry or the need to do a thing comes in. Beware of trying to sell or market every last ounce of passion you have. To learn more about Terri Trespicio, click here. 21: 5 Minute Fridays: On Boundaries
On today’s 5 Minute Friday podcast, I dive into the world of boundaries. What they are, why we struggle to create them and how to start embracing the power of no, for your sake and for those around you. On this podcast you will learn: What boundaries are Why babies and animals are expert at setting boundaries What Brene Brown thinks of people pleasers Why it’s helpful for you and others to create boundaries Why role generosity plays in setting and creating boundaries My top tips and insights on setting boundaries My favorite quote from Kelly Corrigan on the power of saying, “no” "Sexually, professionally, personally, saying no takes balls. Little noes prepare us for the big noes that define the major movements of our lives. The job we shouldn't take, the relationship we must leave, the deal that seems shady. No, finally, to another drink, no to abuse, no to getting back together again. No to extreme lifesaving measures. When we were children, no came easily to the lips. Wear a coat? Turning off the TV? Leaving your sister alone? No chance. But then we became civilized. We aged into self consciousness. Saying no started to feel rude or insubordinate, mean or lazy, withholding or dangerous.
