Homelessness, Mental Health, and Healing by Jess Echeverry

Jess Echeverry, is the Founder and Executive Director of SOFESA, a non-profit dedicated to helping homeless and low-income families in Southern California since 1999. She shared her story of years of homelessness and how she ultimately found healing thru personal relationships. She also addressed some myths surrounding homelessness and how Catholic Social Teaching is the solution. "What differentiates SOFESA from other nonprofits is our foundational principles and model of care. SOFESA’s foundational principle is one: humans are sacred. At the center of homelessness is a person, not a house and people deserve dignity and healing. They are not problems to be solved. Everything we do and say is found within this principle–the person first." Composition to Contemplation: Fully Conscious & Active Participation by Charles Coulombe

Charles Coulombe, is the nephew of the author and historian, Charles Coulombe. Charles (the Less, as he refers to himself) is a native of LA & who has been a Master of Ceremonies in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite for over 20 years. He spoke about the role of laity and active participation at Mass using the methods of St. Ignatius of Loyola, particularly the Composition of Place. Do we have to be uniform and identical in liturgical participation? Or are there different levels? Is one level of participation more “superior” than others? Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labor) by Pope Leo XIII (1891)

Here are some notable quotations from Pope Leo XIII's encyclical: "The contention, then, that the civil government should at its option intrude into and exercise intimate control over the family and the household is a great and pernicious error. True, if a family finds itself in exceeding distress, utterly deprived of the counsel of friends, and without any prospect of extricating itself, it is right that extreme necessity be met by public aid, since each family is a part of the commonwealth." (par. 14) "The first and most fundamental principle, therefore, if one would undertake to alleviate the condition of the masses, must be the inviolability of private property." (par. 15) "[F]or no practical solution of this question will be found apart from the intervention of religion and of the Church." (par. 16) "If any there are who pretend differently - who hold out to a hard-pressed people the boon of freedom from pain and trouble, an undisturbed repose, and constant enjoyment - they delude the people and impose upon them, and their lying promises will only one day bring forth evils worse than the present. Nothing is more useful than to look upon the world as it really is, and at the same time to seek elsewhere, as We have said, for the solace to its troubles." (par. 18) "[I]t is more easy to understand that the true worth and nobility of man lie in his moral qualities, that is, in virtue; that virtue is, moreover, the common inheritance of men, equally within the reach of high and low, rich and poor; and that virtue, and virtue alone, wherever found, will be followed by the rewards of everlasting happiness." (par. 24) "No matter what changes may occur in forms of government, there will ever be differences and inequalities of condition in the State. Society cannot exist or be conceived of without them. Some there must be who devote themselves to the work of the commonwealth, who make the laws or administer justice, or whose advice and authority govern the nation in times of peace, and defend it in war." (par.34) "[N]o man has in this matter power over himself. To consent to any treatment which is calculated to defeat the end and purpose of his being is beyond his right; he cannot give up his soul to servitude, for it is not man's own rights which are here in question, but the rights of God, the most sacred and inviolable of rights." (par. 40) "Women, again, are not suited for certain occupations; a woman is by nature fitted for home-work, and it is that which is best adapted at once to preserve her modesty and to promote the good bringing up of children and the well-being of the family." (par. 42) "We have seen that this great labor question cannot be solved save by assuming as a principle that private ownership must be held sacred and inviolable. The law, therefore, should favor ownership, and its policy should be to induce as many as possible of the people to become owners." (par.46) "But every precaution should be taken not to violate the rights of individuals and not to impose unreasonable regulations under pretense of public benefit. For laws only bind when they are in accordance with right reason, and, hence, with the eternal law of God." (par. 52) "To sum up, then, We may lay it down as a general and lasting law that working men's associations should be so organized and governed as to furnish the best and most suitable means for attaining what is aimed at, that is to say, for helping each individual member to better his condition to the utmost in body, soul, and property." (par. 57) "[A]nd since religion alone... can avail to destroy the evil at its root, all men should rest persuaded that main thing needful is to re-establish Christian morals, apart from which all the plans and devices of the wisest will prove of little avail." (par. 62)

Family Matters: Subsidiarity and the Economy by Dcn. Bernie Ocampo

Theology on Tap OC's first talk for 2023 featured Deacon Bernie Ocampo of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Irvine. He spoke on how the smallest unit of society, the family, plays a role not just in the economy, but also politically in terms of subsidiarity. The closing discussion and Q&A was led by the lead organizer, Louie Calma. Family is the original cell of social life (CCC 2207). However, with the American emphasis on the individual, freedom, and keeping up with the ever-rising cost of living, our duties and responsibilities towards the family becomes incidental. In what ways can we restore a vision that puts the family first in our culture? How does the Gospel manifest according to our state of life? This is where the famous quote of Bishop Sheen, "There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church... As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do." As a bonus for St. Valentine's Day, the following reading is from the Rite of Christian Marriage in the 1962 Rituale Romanum and it has two parts: The Instruction on the Day of Marriage and the Exhortation before Marriage. The Instruction is attributed to The Most Reverend William O. Brady who served as Archbishop of Saint Paul MN from 1956-1961. The Exhortation is a well-known homily and the original author is unknown.

The Martyrdom of St. Ignatius of Antioch (~108AD)

The Emperor Trajan asked Ignatius, "Do we not then seem to you to have the gods in our mind, whose assistance we enjoy in fighting against our enemies?" St. Ignatius rebukes the emperor saying, "You are in error when you call the demons of the nations gods. For there is but one God, who made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that are in them; and one Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, whose kingdom may I enjoy."

Epistle to the Smyrneans by St. Ignatius of Antioch (~110AD)

From Chapter 8 of St. Ignatius's Epistle, "See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid."

Divini Illius Magistri (On Christian Education) by Pope Pius XI (1929)

In paragraph 7, Pope Pius XI states: "It is therefore as important to make no mistake in education, as it is to make no mistake in the pursuit of the last end, with which the whole work of education is intimately and necessarily connected. In fact, since education consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do here below, in order to attain the sublime end for which he was created, it is clear that there can be no true education which is not wholly directed to man's last end, and that in the present order of Providence, since God has revealed Himself to us in the Person of His Only Begotten Son, who alone is "the way, the truth and the life," there can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian education."

  47. 8

Vix Pervenit (On Usury and Other Dishonest Profits) - Pope Benedict XIV (1745)

In paragraph 10, Pope Benedict XIV states, "...We exhort you not to listen to those who say that today the issue of usury is present in name only, since gain is almost always obtained from money given to another. How false is this opinion and how far removed from the truth! We can easily understand this if we consider that the nature of one contract differs from the nature of another. By the same token, the things which result from these contracts will differ in accordance with the varying nature of the contracts. Truly an obvious difference exists between gain which arises from money legally, and therefore can be upheld in the courts of both civil and canon law, and gain which is illicitly obtained, and must therefore be returned according to the judgments of both courts. Thus, it is clearly invalid to suggest, on the grounds that some gain is usually received from money lent out, that the issue of usury is irrelevant in our times."

Reverence Before the True Presence by Fr. Eugene Lee

Advent is a great opportunity to deeply ponder the central tenet of the Christian faith: that God showed up in the FLESH. The Gospels account many times in which reverence became the instinctive disposition whenever one authentically opened himself to the power of Jesus Christ. Reverence, the fear of the Lord, and awe are all underrated in our modern approach to worship. For December's Theology on Tap, Fr. Eugene Lee, spoke on how a person's willingness to offer deep reverence to Christ can be the key to transformative worship, especially worship before the Lord in the Eucharist.
